Returns from Treating Smutgrass • The study assumes: • • • • • • 100% efficacy of Velpar 3 acres per animal unit Cattle would not graze smutgrass 70% wean percentage 550lb weaning weight Calf prices and cost of Velpar treatment were updated to current prices Returns from Treating Smutgrass Smutgrass Density None Low Medium High Calf Value $ 332.50 $ 266.00 $ 222.43 $ 194.91 Cost of Smutgrass $ $ 66.50 $ 110.07 $ 137.59 Cost of Control $ 45.32 $ 45.32 $ 45.32 $ 45.32 Net Return $ (45.32) $ 21.18 $ 64.75 $ 92.27 • Calf Value: The value per acre of the calf production based on stocking rate. Lower density smutgrass means more forage, so higher stocking rate and more calves produced. • Cost of Smutgrass: The difference between the calf value with the different levels of smutgrass and the calf value without smutgrass. Returns from Treating Smutgrass • Findings: Smutgrass Density None Low Medium High Calf Value $ 332.50 $ 266.00 $ 222.43 $ 194.91 Cost of Smutgrass $ $ 66.50 $ 110.07 $ 137.59 Cost of Control $ 45.32 $ 45.32 $ 45.32 $ 45.32 Net Return $ (45.32) $ 21.18 $ 64.75 $ 92.27 • According to this, treating smutgrass at all densities will provide a positive return. • However, the study does not account for the effectiveness of the herbicide treatment. Return from Treating Smutgrass • If the treatment is not 100% effective and only reduces the presence of smutgrass, the returns are not as favorable. Smutgrass Density Medium to Low High to Medium High to Low Calf Value $ 266.00 $ 222.43 $ 266.00 Cost of Smutgrass Cost of Control $ 43.57 45.32 $ 27.52 45.32 $ 71.09 45.32 • Medium to Low : 33% infestation to less than 20% • High to Medium: 40% to 33% • High to Low: 40% to less than 20% Net Return $ (1.75) $ (17.80) $ 25.77 Return from Treating Smutgrass • To see positive returns, the area with smutgrass should be at least 40% infested, and the treatment should eliminate half of the smutgrass in the area. • However, this does not take into account preventing smutgrass to spread. So a 10 acre pasture with 5 inches of grazable bahia contains: • 285𝑙𝑏𝑠 × 5 𝑖𝑛𝑐ℎ𝑒𝑠 = 1425𝑙𝑏𝑠 𝑜𝑓 𝐷𝑀 • 1425𝑙𝑏𝑠 × 10 𝑎𝑐𝑟𝑒𝑠 = 14,250𝑙𝑏𝑠 𝑜𝑓 𝐷𝑀 • If the density is less than 100% • 80% density: • 14,250𝑙𝑏𝑠 × 0.8 = 11,400𝑙𝑏𝑠 𝑜𝑓 𝐷𝑀 Pricing Forage • A simple way to price forage is to use hay prices • Bahia hay usually contains about 90% DM • So a 1000lb round bale would have about 900lbs of DM • For example, lets say a 1000 round bale of bahia cost $40 • $40 ÷ 900𝑙𝑏𝑠 = $0.045 𝑝𝑒𝑟 𝑝𝑜𝑢𝑛𝑑 𝑜𝑓𝐷𝑀 Valuing your herbicide treatment • Once you know how much DM you have and how much DM is per pound, you can start to evaluate your weed control program. • If we go back to the 10 acre pasture: • • • • Dogfennel 20% of pasture is dogfennel We treat early with 2,4-D 100% effective Valuing your herbicide treatment • Before the treatment we had 11,400lbs of DM in the pasture • After, we had 14,250lbs. So we increased our forage production by 2,850lbs. • Using our price per DM, we estimate that increase is worth $128.25, and our spraying cost were $112.40. • So the 2,4-D paid for itself, and we came out ahead $15.85 Questions
