Richard Avedon:
Photographer
of Influence
MAY 21, 2011 THROUGH
SEPTEMBER 4, 2011
American photographer Richard
Avedon worked in New York from the
1950s through to the 21st century. He
is highly regarded for revolutionizing
the genre of portraiture and is known
for his depictions of politicians, artists,
models, and Hollywood stars, among
them Audrey Hepburn, Bob Dylan,
Marilyn Monroe, Ronald Reagan, and
Andy Warhol. Avedon created some of
the most iconic works of the 20th
century. His influence in the world of
fashion photography created the
transition to the emotionally
compelling images we see today.

Avedon’s Models: The Other Side of the Lens
Joseph Pescatore / Sunday, June 26 at 3 p.m.
Richard Avedon revolutionized fashion photography with his
imaginative portrayals of beautiful women wearing extraordinary
clothes in irresistible settings. His models—among them Suzy
Parker, Dovima, and China Michado—all became superstars of
the era, well before Andy Warhol coined the term. Joseph
Pescatore, a professor of apparel design at Nassau Community
College and adjunct instructor in fashion design at Parsons The New School for
Design, discusses some of the glamorous women who collaborated with Avedon
and, in the process, forever changed the world of fashion.

SECOND FLOOR GALLERIES
Museum members and special guests braved a snowstorm and record low
temperatures to be the first to see Milton Avery & THE END OF MODERNISM,
organized for the museum by Karl E. Willers, Ph.D. who has been closely associated
with Avery’s work throughout his career. The Second Floor Galleries were enlivened
with early 20th-century political art: Posters of the Russian Revolution 1917-1921. In
the Contemporary Gallery, the museum was showing Donald Baechler, an exhibition
that was organized by Elaine Berger for the museum’s Contemporary Collectors Circle.

Elaine Berger, co-chair of the Contemporary
Collectors Circle, organized the exhibition of
Donald Baechler’s work. She is shown with
Happy Painting.
Formulation: Articulation includes 127
silk-screened prints based on geometric
designs and complex relationships of
color. In these prints, Josef Albers
(1888-1976) explores different effects of
perception, such as the illusion of
movement and the interaction of
adjacent colors. His color research
extended into such series as Treble Clef,
Variants on a Theme, and Homage to
the Square all represented in this
portfolio. An overview of Albers’ life work,
this series of prints was published in
1972 by Harry N. Abrams, New York.
The images were selected and arranged
in specific order by Albers himself.

What’s Going on...
NCMA and its grounds are filled with
extraordinary things to do and see.
Visitors wander through the Sculpture
Park, visit the Art Space for Children,
explore the hiking trails, relax in the
gardens, tour the exhibitions in the main
building, and attend classes in the Art
School. So please don’t be daunted by a
full parking lot. It doesn’t necessarily
mean crowded galleries. But it does let
us know that lots of people are enjoying
all that NCMA offers — indoors and out!

Get Messy!
Sol Aramendi, artist/photographer
Sunday, June 12, 12-3 p.m.
Children and their parents and grandparents had a glorious afternoon at the
museum, getting messy with a wide variety of hands-on art activities that included
creating prints using a real fish as a stamp. The art activities were led by Iandry
Randriamandroso, a community arts specialist who frequently works with groups at
the museum. He put together a team of art educators to assist and guide at each of
the work stations where children painted, drew, constructed masks, and worked
with yarns and other fibers. Laura Lynch, the museum’s director of education,
outlined plans for the proposed expansion and renovation of the Art Space for
Children and explained that new building would greatly enhance the museum’s
ability to offer many more great family events like Get Messy. To find out how to

Beat the Winter Blahs was a
lovely brunch in which
museum’s docents, along with
museum staffers, each
brought a standout culinary
treat to share. Everyone who
attended enjoyed a morning of
meeting, greeting and eating.
Working with school groups at
the museum is an important
part of training for art
education students at C.W.
Post. Under the direction of
museum educators and
Professor Donna Tuman,
Post’s director of art
education, the students
develop and hone their art
teaching skills by working with
children of all ages.

For the first time, the Art Space for
Children hosted two hour-long Saturday
afternoon art programs for children and
their families. Saturday Family Day at the
Art Space featured Ronald Searle’s
whimsical illustrations for Let’s Have a
Bite! as museum docents read the
amusing poems that Robert Forbes
created for this book. With these
springboards for the imagination, the
children then illustrated their own poetry.
Saturday, August 6, 11 a.m.-2 p.m.
Weather permitting. Space is limited.
Advance registration is suggested but
tickets will also be available day of the
event on a space-available basis.
Admission is $10 (nonmembers, $20),

the museum. Weekends only there is a

One hundred fifth and sixth
graders participated in four
days of gallery discussions,
art making and writing
activities that linked visual
and written literacy. These
visits were part of the ELA
Enrichment Program, a
language and art program in
which we partner with the
Central Islip school district.
Plans are already in the
works to make this an
annual collaboration with the
Central Islip district.
