Pine Bluff Students Receive Scholarships
During the August 8th Town Hall
meeting, 15 local students were
awarded one of two types of scholarships from the Pine Bluff City
Celebration Scholarship Committee
and the City of Pine Bluff. Applications for the awards were received
over the summer and evaluated by the
City Celebration Committee and
members of the Mayor’s office; including Mayor Debe Hollingsworth.
To receive a scholarship, applicants
must be a fulltime student attending
UAPB or SEARK College. Selections
were made based on many variables,
besides each individual GPA.
The awards were announced by Ms.
Winners: LaQushia Robinson, James Spinks, Travis
Peyton, Ebonie Toney, LaBrooke Turner, Kerry
Gibson, Jr., Ti’Ran Compton, Keith Boyd Kastasia

Hollingsworth. Assisting the committee from the Mayor’s office was
Special Projects Coordinator Kelley
Bohlmann.
The awards range from 12 full $1,000
scholarships to the local institution of
their choice and 3 - $500 book scholarships to assist in the rising cost of
course related study materials.

On Sunday July 31, 2016, 16
athletes from the Port City
SPEED Track and Field Club
traveled to Humble, TX to
participate in the 50Th Anniversary of the AAU Junior
Olympic Games. They were
joined by 15,000 other athletes
from across the United States
participating in over 20
sports. Approximately 10,500
of these athletes and coaches
participated in the Track and
Field competition of the
games. The event officially
began on August 1 with former
US Olympian Carl Lewis lighting the torch and sharing
words of encouragement to the
athletes. After 6 days of rigorous competition in sweltering
heat, a “Fantastic Four” squad
of 11-12 year old young men
returned to Pine Bluff with 7
National Medals!
Leading the pack was White
Hall resident, Damarion “Sho”
Dean who won the 100m Dash
with a blistering time of 12.68
seconds. Immediately after
being awarded a gold medal
for his feat, Dean was
approached by a team of
reporters from Sports Illustrated for his first interview. Seconds later, Dean was whisked
off to join, 11 year olds Torren
Jackson, Akyell Madison and
12 year old Brevin Malone all
of Pine Bluff, to compete in
the 4x100m relay. The team

The gridiron is on fire and football
season is in full swing. That being
said, I encourage the citizens of our
great city to support our local high
school and college sports events.
Pine Bluff is home to some of the
most gifted and talented young men
who go the extra mile during each
school’s football season. Participation from our community, as spectators, creates school spirit, and school
spirit creates participation. Our
community’s involvement is very
important to the raw excitement
generated on the football field and

pride in each of the schools they
represent. This edition of the Pulse
of Pine Bluff will list the various
school football schedules in and
around our city, so take an interest in
your local high school or college football team by attending this seasons
games and help foster the energy
needed to create teams spirit and
community spirit, now and throughout the rest of the year.

Trinity Village to Present A Style Show & Luncheon
Trinity Village Retirement Community,
located at 6400 Trinity Drive, Pine
Bluff, AR 71603, will be holding a Style
Show & Luncheon, hosted by Blue
Moose-Keo, AR. The event will be held
on September 22, 2016 at 12 noon in the
Great Room. Tickets will be $15 per
person. They are also currently accepting donations of door prizes to create
the most exciting event possible.
The Trinity Village Complex is a 501c3,
non-profit organization. Each month the
facility hosts various programs and
events to raise funding for projects to
assist the retirements center and its
residents.
Attendance and participation at this
event will assist those at Trinity Village
to increase quality of place and quality
of life.
This event and others like it serve to
bring enjoyment and motivation to
many who reside at Trinity Village
Retirement Community.
If you’ve
already purchased a ticket, you will
have a wonderful time. If you have not,
please contact Ms. Jo Chambliss to
purchase a ticket or for more information regarding the Style Show and
Luncheon. Remember, every dollar you
spend blesses the life of someone else.
Junior Athletes, Continued
came in 6th with the team’s season best
time of 51.00 seconds. The Mercury
Track and Field Club of Desoto, TX
won that event with a national record
time of 47.93 seconds. Damarion Dean
was not able to join his teammates on
the podium for that awards ceremony
as he was immediately escorted to the
heating tent one final time this season
to participate in the 200m Dash for his
age division. Dean achieved a 6th
place medal in that event also for a
26.74 second finish. On Friday Akyell
Madison jumped to a distance of 16’
2.5” to earn a bronze medal in the
Long Jump competition for 11 year
olds, bringing the total national medals
won in this competition to 7, a record
achievement for the 14 year old Port
City SPEED organization. The group
was accompanied by Coaches Martin
Richards, Robert Jackson and Brian
Malone and a host of family and
supporters. Recognition of the foursome by state and local leaders is
planned for later this month. Full

The Taste of Southeast Arkansas
The Pine Bluff Chamber of
Commerce presents, "The Taste
of Southeast Arkansas." This
event is less than a month away
and tickets are now available
for purchase at the Chamber.
Join them for an evening of
delicious samplings of signature
dishes prepared by celebrity
chefs from our region!
During the event, The Chamber will sell diamond signature
cocktails for $10 each. Each
drink will contain a cubic zirconia (sponsored by Sissy's Log
Cabin) that has been frozen in
an ice cube. Two of the drinks
will contain a CZ laserinscribed with the word
"winner." Purchasers must take
their CZs to the Pine Bluff Sissy's location (during regular
business hours) where a jeweler
will determine whether or not
they have a winning CZ. Two
winners will each receive a
real half-carat diamond!
