MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL
We very much appreciate your support throughout this first
half of 2012. ‘Teamwork makes the Dream Work’ and this
is evidenced on so many occasions as we strive to work
together for the benefit of our children. Thank you! Mrs
Vague (5 Gold) and Mrs Johnston (2 Red) will be away on
Long Service Leave for the first four weeks of term three.
We wish them a refreshing and enjoyable break and
welcome Ms Caitlin Deeth to 2 Red and Mrs Kristin
Fitzgerald to 5 Gold. We also have Mrs Craig commencing
maternity leave at the end of the first week of term three.
Mrs Duncan has been appointed to the Teacher Librarian
position.
The Parents and Friends association have organised an
Olympic themed school family BBQ and dance for Friday
13 July. Please mark this in your social calendar.
Regards
Peter

At St Francis Xavier we are experiencing a consistent problem with lice. In
an effort to eradicate or at least control this problem we are appealing to
parents to make a concerted and vigilant effort to ensure the children are
lice free.
As headlice are highly contagious, their elimination requires a community
-based effort. I am asking all parents to check hair over the holidays.
Eggs are not difficult to see; use a strong light and look on the hair shafts.
Newly laid eggs are usually within 1.5cm of the scalp while older eggs are
higher up the hair shafts. If you are not sure whether an object you find is
a head louse egg, try sliding it up the hair shaft using your fingers. Eggs
are usually quite difficult to move, whereas hair muffs and other items
slide easily.
However, finding live lice can be difficult since the climbers move away
quickly from disturbances in the hair, and they are very difficult to see.
An easy way to find the climbers is to use the conditioner and comb
technique:
1. Apply “WHITE NO FRILLS” conditioner to dry hair aiming to cover each hair from root to tip with a layer of conditioner.
2. Detangle the hair using an ordinary comb.
3. Immediately comb the hair with a fine tooth comb. The best comb
for this is the Lice Meister comb. However, plastic nit combs
with conditioner are also very effective for detecting climbers.
4. Wipe the conditioner off the fine tooth comb onto a paper tissue
and look for lice and eggs.
5. Repeat the combing for every part of the head at least 5 times.
6. Also examine the comb for lice and eggs.
RUN AROUND AUSTRALIA
St Francis Xavier is still leading this challenge. Please
continue to collect dockets for the rest of this week. Thanks
so much for all the wonderful support you have shown during
the competition. I will let you know the outcome first week
back next term.
Conditioner stuns lice for 20 minutes. So once the hair is properly
covered with a layer of conditioner, do not delay in combing those
little suckers out!
Please be consistent and vigilant to help eradicate this problem.
TREAT YOUR CHILD OVER THE HOLIDAYS
HAPPY HOLIDAYS!
Where has the term gone????? So much has happened, so
much has been achieved! Everyone has earned a good rest.
Have a wonderful break. Keep safe if you are traveling. Enjoy
your children’s company and return to us safe and sound for
the commencement of the new term on Monday 9 July.
THANKS
I sincerely thank our families for your support over this very busy term. I
thank our professional and dedicated staff for their tireless energy into
making learning fun for your children. I would also like to thank Father
Barry, Sister Rita and Audrey in the Parish office for keeping open the links
between school and parish. May this break rejuvenate the children for a
fun filled Term 3 in anticipation of an enjoyable Beachathon and Family
BBQ.
Cheers Jackie Cameron
Have a good week!
Ronnie Wilson.

YEAR OF GRACE
This week’s reflection comes
from Bishop Michael Putney
(Diocese of Townsville) who
talks about how the meaning
and purpose of the Year of
Grace came about:
Bishop Michael Putney :
“We’ve been struggling to define
what to do and how to do it. Then we realised at the Bishops
Conference, we were starting with ourselves and the situation we
were dealing with, instead of God. And we decided that we needed to
stop and invite the whole church to a year, if you like, of retreat. A
year of allowing the grace of God to stir within us, because we know
God’s grace comes to us here in Australia in abundance.
We’ve decided to ask God to give us a year of grace. And
what we’ll try to do as a country, as a church, is to start afresh
from Jesus. To turn to him, who is the centre of everything, to
look at him, to learn from him, so that we might find at the end
of the year a new energy and a new insight into how we can
‘Duk in Altum’ (Put out into the deep). But we are not going to
try to do
that until we’ve asked God to lavish his grace upon us.
The invitation is for every Catholic to be a part of it. And there
is no program, it’ll just be a thousand opportunities to start
afresh from Christ and to discover the power of the Grace of
God in one’s life.”

SCHOOL FEES
We are now in the final few days of term and despite reminders
there are still families who have either fees or camp fees
outstanding. During the holidays we will be reviewing what
action we need to take to recover these fees. If you are one of
those with school fees or camp fees outstanding please ensure
that these are cleared by the end of the week.
During the holidays we will be sending out Term 3 statements.
When you receive them please take a couple of minutes to
ensure that all the information is correct. You should be
checking that all credits have been received, any items returned
have been covered and that your Direct Debit, if you use this
method, is sufficient to clear your fees by the end of the year. It
is easier for you to take action now than to be faced with a large
outstanding amount at the end of the year.

Under 10’s Rugby League at the Titan’s!
On Sunday, 12 of the boys from Year 4 and 5 represented St
Francis Xavier playing during half time of the Titans match to
highlight the 50th anniversary of Primary School Rugby League on
the Gold Coast. The boys played well sharing the ball around,
passing well and making strong tackles. Congratulations to
Cameron Coleman who scored a try!
After playing, the boys got to make a guard of honour with 3 other
Gold Coast schools and cheer on the Titans as they made their
way back onto the field for the second half.
A big thank you to all the parents and friends who came along to
support us. It was a great experience for the boys to be out there
on the same field as some of the famous NRL superstars.
