Congratulations Bronte!
This morning we were given the exciting
news that Woonona High School, Year 11
student Bronte Petrolo has been chosen
to compere this year’s Southern Stars
production.
This is a fantastic honour for Bronte who
has performed in the show for the past 7
Years.
Well done Bronte and we look forward to
seeing this years production.
The Renovations Begin
Construction has begun on the refurbishment of the front office block and the surrounding areas.
The office staff have been relocated to the Staff Common Room, which is located above the Library. Access to the office is via
the stairs on the right hand side of the administration block. Please follow the signs that are clearly visible to get to the new
office area.
Construction is expected to take several months, so once again, can we ask that parents and students be patient with the
inconveniences which will undoubtedly occur with these renovations.
Farewell Giorgia
This week we say goodbye to our popular exchange student
from Italy Giorgia Madella. Georgia who is a Year 11 student,
has been with us for twelve months. She will return to
Mantova (Italy) on the 7 July. Georgia has thoroughly enjoyed
her time here and hopes to visit again soon. We wish you all
the best for your future.

Year 7 Rewards Excursion
Exhausted and a bit sore, had our
Year 7 cohort finish up their first
rewards excursion for the year. 100
students, accompanied by Mr
Rayner, Ms Burns, Ms Epton and Mrs
Steele, were very excited as they
boarded the bus first thing on
Monday morning. First stop,
HangDog and HangTime where in
groups of 50, they spent an hour
executing the activities on display.
From
rock-climbing
and
trampolining; to flipping and caving the
students
pushed
their
boundaries and encouraged one
another throughout the day. Mrs
Steele even went in the caves to see
what all the fun was about! Halfway
through the day, the students
swapped venues and continued the activities. Not only were the students very well behaved, they proved very agile and
confident to show off their skills at both venues. On return to school, the students finished the day with a mass game of
dodgeball. A fun-fuelled day which ended with lots of smiles and a few tired eyes. On behalf of the staff members and venues
we visited, we wish to thank the students for their positive behaviour and encouragement. They certainly left a great
impression throughout the day. We are looking forward to the next excursion with you all!

Student Reports
On Monday 27 June, Year 7 students who had obtained the level of a Bronze Merit Certificate got to go on a rewards excursion
to both Hang Time and Hang Dog. We all had an exciting and phenomenal time climbing the walls and crawling through
tunnels. A funny thing happened when Ms Steele got stuck in the tunnels and we all had to evacuate. Besides that we had an
awesome time. I’ll never forget my first ever Year 7 Woonona High School rewards excursion. I enjoyed every moment.

Year 7 went on a rewards excursion to Hang Time and Hang Dog for the day. It was both an exciting and phenomenal day. It
was a great way to get to know others and make new friends. Overall it was a great day and there wasn’t a moment I didn’t
enjoy.

Rewards Excursion
As with Year 7, students in Years 8, 9, 10 and 11 also had the opportunity to enjoy a rewards excursion. Students who had
reached the level of Bronze Merit Award were invited to enjoy a day of ten pin bowling at Northern Bowl and a movie at
Warrawong cinemas.
Accompanied by Mr Mucci, Mr De Main, Ms Mellor, Mr Rayner and Ms Sharpe the students had lots of fun ten pin bowling
before enjoying a movie. The students had the choice of watching Finding Dora, Independence Day or the latest Ice Age movie.
From all reports the great and the day was a great way to celebrate their efforts.

On Wednesday 29 June Indigenous students from our Community of Schools came to Woonona High School to enjoy a
morning of games and peer bonding. ATSIC students from Woonona High School ran the games and instructed the younger
students on how each was played.
Year 12 student Jack Taylor organised the games for the day as part of his HSC Design & Technology Major Project. The D&T
course involves the study of both designing and producing, through areas such as design theory and practice, design
processes, environmental and social issues, communication, research, technologies, and the manipulation of materials, tools
and techniques.
The games that were enjoyed on the day all had relevance and representation of life skills. The game of Kai involved students
in the middle of a circle protecting a ball. Protection of the ball was representative
of the protection of food and shelter. Another game that was played was called
“Goodie”. In this game a large ball was thrown into the centre of two lines of
students. The students had to try a hit the large ball with smaller balls, this being
representative of hunting.
Another game played was called “Bundungie” which is a mixture of AFL, soccer,
football and netball. This game being a test of team work and bonding.
The students very much enjoyed the games on the day.
“Unplugged 19”

A special surprise was in store for those who ventured out in the freezing cold for Unplugged 19 on Tuesday 28 th June. As the
name would suggest, our Unplugged concerts usually feature acoustic music but this time audiences were treated to a number
of ‘electric’ performances by our current Year 12 Music students, as the stage had been set for their Trial HSC performance
exams that day. Featuring songs by the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Yngwie Malmsteen, and an original composition using a loop
pedal, Year 12 were certainly very impressive. We also heard an original song by two of our ex-students, Shay Bagia and Izak
Lucas-Parr, who teach guitar and bass and accompany our Year 12 students. The rest of the evening featured a range of
acoustic songs from students of all years. It was great to see so many junior students, especially those in Year 7, getting up to
perform in front of an audience. We hope to see you all at Unplugged 20 next term – this concert will be a wonderful
celebration of our long tradition of live music concerts and we hope to feature some past performers as guest artists.
Unplugged 20 will be held next term on Tuesday 20th September from 7pm.

We Will Rock You

On Wednesday 15th June a large group of our performing arts students travelled to Sydney to see the musical production of
We Will Rock You. The show was written by Ben Elton and featured music by the famous rock group Queen. The story is based
on a time in the future when all music is controlled by a big global corporation, and school kids are only allowed to download
certain music. There are no live bands anymore and nobody creates their own music. The ‘Bohemians’ are a rebel group that
try to bring back the music. The production featured a live rock band, wonderful singers and lots of special effects. All staff and
students who attended were thoroughly entertained and enjoyed the production. Thank you to Mr Bretag for organising
another wonderful trip to the theatre for us.

Countermove
On Friday 17th June, Mrs Johnstone and myself had the
pleasure of escorting students to view the new works
performed by Sydney Dance Company, CounterMove. It was
an exhilarating double bill that provided an insight into the
world of contemporary dance. For some of the students, this
was the first professional production thy have witnessed and
they were blown away!
Between the performances, the audience were involved in a
question and answer session and Woonona High School
students were confident to prompt many questions ranging
from lighting choices to training regimes. Not only were the
audience impressed with every segment which was
performed; they were also taught a small rhythmic clapping
sequence which is used in the choreography.
The students were amazed by the strength, agility and
performance quality of these two pieces. A worthwhile
excursion to appreciate the amazing effort that goes into
producing professional productions.

Community of Schools Band Program

The Woonona Community of Schools Band Program has
been running successfully since 2012 and this year we have
20 students from Russell Vale and Woonona Primary
Schools participating. Each Wednesday afternoon during
sport time, these students come to Woonona High School
to learn an instrument and rehearse as a band. Our senior
Music students and outside instrumental tutors provide
small group instruction on flute, clarinet, saxophone,
trumpet, trombone, violin, cello, guitar, bass, keyboard and
drums. The primary students started attending on
Wednesday 22nd June and will continue learning their
instruments for the rest of the year, eventually performing together as a band.
We also run a Junior Band on Wednesday mornings from 8:00am – 9:30am for high school and advanced primary school
students. Many of our junior band students also attend the Primary Band rehearsals on Wednesdays to help our tutors.
Primary students from any local schools may attend these programs.
I would like to thank all of our Woonona High School students who assist with this program each week and to congratulate our
primary students for their progress so far. Both bands will be performing later in the year – details to come.
We also run a tuition program for instrumental and vocal lessons before and after school and we currently offer guitar, bass,
drums, keyboard, violin, cello, flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet and trombone. All lessons are conducted by experienced
Music teachers with current Working With Children Checks in the Music Rooms at Woonona High School. Private lessons cost
$20 per half hour and partner lessons cost $10 per half hour. Please see Miss Sharp in the Music Department to register your

Woonona IRT Performance
During sport time this week, 33 students from Year 7-9 walked to the Woonona IRT to perform during their afternoon tea. The
students had a tough challenge of performing in a new space which was quite limited, however they took this in their stride
and professionally performed 5 items they had worked on throughout Semester 1. These included hip hop, contemporary,
musical theatre, poi and the item performed recently for the South Coast Dance Festival. During their quick changes, I spoke
about the purpose of the items performed and provided a background of the new dance programs and introduction of CAPA at
Woonona High School. The audience were very impressed by the show and they were clapping along throughout the final act,
Revolting Children from the hit Broadway musical "Matilda". We would like to thank Ida Lewis and the staff at Woonona IRT
for inviting us to perform for them. It was a great experience for the students and we were very proud of the integrity and
professionalism the students displayed.

Marine Studies Excursion

On Friday 24 June students from Years 8, 9 and 10 were invited to attend a Marine Studies excursion to the IMAX theatre and
Sydney Aquarium. After surviving an early wake up (7:00am!) and downpour of rain, students explored the aquarium and
participated in a competition for best “selfie” with a marine creature.
The aquarium was fantastic with lots of interesting exhibits. Student favourites were the dugongs and nautilus. After the
aquarium students had a short lunch before watching “Finding Dory” at the IMAX theatre in 3D.
There was a close call in making the train home and it was a bit squishy on the inner-city line but all students agreed it was well
worth the slight discomfort.

iSTEM
This week our iSTEM class (Science, Technology, Engineering
and Mathematics) was taking advantage of the outdoor
sunshine to learn the physics of how a trebuchet works.
A trebuchet is a type of catapult which was frequently used in
the Middle Ages. It is sometimes called a counterweight
trebuchet or counterpoise trebuchet, to distinguish it from an
earlier weapon called the traction trebuchet, where men
pulling ropes provided the power.
A trebuchet is a compound machine—a combination of
simple machines. It makes use of the mechanical advantage
of a lever. Most trebuchets are powered exclusively by the
force of gravity. Potential energy is stored by means of an
extremely heavy weight box attached (by a hinged
connection) to the counterweight portion of the throwing
arm.
With help from Mr Zubovic (Head Teacher TAS) and Mr
Gilbert (Mathematics Teacher) the students were certainly
having fun learning how to fire the trebuchet.

This week at assembly we had a visit from Chloe Saxby and her mother Nyree. Chloe is suffering from Vanishing White Matter
Disease, an extremely rare, degenerative and terminal brain disease.
Chloe was a healthy and happy three year old then overnight, she lost the use of her legs. After eight months of testing Chloe
was diagnosed with Vanishing White Matter Disease, an extremely rare, degenerative and terminal brain disease. VWM is a
condition that destroys Myelin, the brain's white matter. In doing so it permanently affects transmission of brain signals to the
rest of the body.
Nyree explained to the assembly that Scientists researching VWM have had some encouraging breakthroughs recently but
funding was of the essence to continue the research for a cure.
Woonona High School will hold a "Crazy Hair Day" and cup cake stall this Thursday to raise funds.
Mr Brophy also congratulated the group of Year 7 students who fundraised recently at the Bulli Foragers Markets and raised
$4000 for this worthy cause.

Zone Athletics Carnival 2016
A strong contingent of competitors represented Woonona High School at the Zone Athletics Carnival which was held at Kerryn
McCann Stadium, Beaton Park on Tuesday 21st June.
Congratulations to Brianna Gurney who once again broke the record for her age group in the javelin event.
Twenty of our students managed to gain selection for individual events and the same number will
represent in the five relay teams which also qualified to compete at The South Coast Regional
Carnival at Bruce Athletics Stadium on Friday August 5th.
Woonona High School was placed 5th overall at the carnival. Our students were extremely
enthusiastic on the day and well done to all those who took up the challenge to compete in 2016.

This week the Year 9 / 10 Skateboard Construction class were busy decorating their skateboard designs. Students in this course
learn the skills involved in the design and construction of skateboard decks. During the course students construct a long board
and a short board, they learn graphic design skills and the use of technologies related to graphic design.
South Coast Cross Country
Congratulations to the following students who were successful in qualifying for the South Coast team to travel to Eastern Creek
next term:
Zara Sharman, Flynn Madden, Jade Van Duin. Good luck to these students at the State carnival. Martin Vasseur (our exchange
student who has just returned to Belgium) also qualified.
South Coast Gymnastics
Congratulations to Carla Baker and Sienna McClafferty on their
selection in the South Coast Gymnastics team. Good luck to
these 2 students who will attend the state carnival next term.

“Change for Change”
At assembly last week Mrs Jean Thompson (Corrimal Rotary representative) was presented with $265 which was collected at
the canteen by the “Change for Change” fundraising drive for the victims of the Nepal earthquakes last year.
The “Change for Change” fundraiser was instigated by Mrs Carmen Mete. Students and staff were asked to donate their spare
change from canteen purchases to go towards this worthy cause.
Mrs Thompson has travelled to Nepal several times and has witnessed the hardship that many Nepalese people are still
experiencing today. Many are still in make shift housing without proper food or warm clothing. Mrs Thompson will return to
Nepal at the end of October with donations of money and clothing that Rotary has collected. Rotary has been responsible for
raising funds to rebuild housing and schools as well as building an orphanage for young children.
Mrs Thompson explained to the assembly that every little bit of money helps and that it will make a difference in someone’s
life. She congratulated and thanked our school community and urged us all to keep up our fundraising efforts for this very
important cause.
Mrs Mete also thanked the Year 8 Food Technology class for their fundraising efforts this year.
Make Sure Your Bikes Are Locked!
Unfortunately , recently there was an incident of a push bike being stolen from the bike racks which are now located on the
southern side of the school Hall due to the school renovations currently being carried out.
A parent rang the school recently to say his sons bike had been stolen whilst he was at sport. Unfortunately the bike was not
locked and no one saw the incident occur . He asked that all students be reminded to be vigilant and make sure bikes are
securely locked at all times.

GiGi’s Restaurant Visit
Senior Food Technology students gathered for a 'foodie' experience last Friday at GIGIs in Wollongong to experience their
traditional home-made pasta, tiramisu and other Italian fare. Co-owners, brothers Giuseppe and Roberto Gigliotti have their
Aunty Gina come in everyday to make lasagna, gnocchi, ravioli, pappardelle & tagliatelle using time-tested traditional methods,
fresh and seasonal ingredients. The student's have been learning about the sensory and functional properties of food, factors
affecting food selection and food presentation techniques and I was very impressed with their remembered knowledge as we
discussed the food we were enjoying.
How did Lucy improve her marks in Maths?
Lucy Kirk is one of Woonona High School’s leading students and she uses her MathsOnline computer tutor regularly. She has
logged on over 100 times already this semester.
We asked her how she uses the program and she said:
“I watch the videos and then print off the worksheet and try answering the
questions. I then check my answers with the worked solutions they provide. If I am
away from school and miss a lesson I can catch up at home. If I can’t remember
something from junior school I can look up videos from the menu from earlier years,
like year 9 and 10 level for instance. My examination results in year 12 General maths
have improved from 53% up to 82%. My teachers are also very generous as they
often offer to come in early to help year 12 students before school starts and they
also stay after school to help in the school Homework Centre.”
Lucy is not the only student from Woonona High school to discover how helpful this
computer tutor program can be and how it can boost confidence. MathsOnline has
become even more popular in 2016 with 3 times as many students signing up for
their 12 month family subscription.
MathsOnline is always available if any new students wish to sign up. Simply pay $20
to the front office and take your receipt to the Maths staffroom.

Fundraising for Chloe
On Thursday 30 June Woonona High School SRC members and Ms Bolam (SRC Coordinator) held a crazy hair day and cupcake
stall to raise money for Chloe Saxby, the beautiful 7 year old who is suffering from a rare form of terminal brain cancer. Chloe
and her mum Nyree attended assembly this week and explained that researchers researching VWM have had some
encouraging breakthroughs recently but funding was of the essence to continue the research for a cure. Please see page 10 of
this issue for the full story.
The SRC committee headed by Taylah Carter sold colourful wrist bands, cupcakes and sprayed hair crazy colours, all for a gold
coin donation. A total of $427.00 was raised on the day. Well done!
eBooks are coming to the library!
From Term 3 students will be able to borrow eBooks from their school library.
The addition of ebooks will allow students to borrow books from home or anywhere there is an
internet connection.
Borrowing is easy. Students will simply go to their DET Portal site and go to the link “ My Library
Oliver “ under Search Sites . Here they will see a link to
WHEELERS eBooks.

Illawarra 200
Last week at assembly Councillor Michelle Blicavs from the
Wollongong City Council presented Woonona High School
with a commemorative medallion marking the Bicentenary of
European settlement in the Illawarrra.
The focus of the Bicentennial Illawarra 200 committee was to
acknowledge the 2015-2016 Bicentenary of Wollongong in a
manner which was inclusive and recognised the multiple
cultural stories that make up the unique heritage of our
region.
In 1815 some of the Illawarra’s traditional custodians led
some white settlers and their cattle down the escarpment.
The settlers began to farm the area . This settlement marked
a new chapter in our area.
The logo of the bicentenary committee (shown above)
depicts the trek down the escarpment by white settlers and
traditional custodians as represented by the white dots. The
colourful ribbons that form the lines of our escarpment
represent the ongoing settlement of the Illawarra by people
from across the globe. The logo also celebrates our local
flora, with Illawarra Flame Tree blossoms placed in the
pattern of the Southern Cross. The number of flowers
symbolises the first five land grants handed out in 1816 and
the iconic Five Islands off our coast.
Drama Masks
The Year 9/10 Drama class have finished their assessment task, researching and constructing masks from different theatre eras.
Students were required to learn how to perform using different masks and then research different masks used in different
theatres and dramatic styles. Students then had to make the masks and perform with them. It was a wonderful success with
students learning new dramatic skills and learning about a new form of Drama- their masks look fantastic too!

Supporting “Gonski”

Last week staff at Woonona High School along with local
Federal Member for Cunningham, Sharon Bird gathered to
show their support for the needs-based Gonski model of
funding. Since the implementation of the model, one third of
the money has trickled into schools in NSW and the students of
Woonona High have benefited significantly.
Woonona High School has allocated the Gonski money to
employ a senior student adviser to support and mentor Year 12
students throughout their HSC. The employment of additional
specialist teachers to expand the breath and depth of the senior
curriculum has also lead to increased engagement and post
school destinations for senior students. In 2015, 65% of HSC
students achieved early entry into the University of Wollongong
an increase from 47% in 2014 when Gonski funding began.
The employment of additional teachers to deliver a broader
curriculum in Years 9 and 10 has led to improved engagement,
increased attendance and improved student learning outcomes.
Furthermore, in 2016, Woonona High School has utilised
additional funding to implement an individualised reading
program for Year 8 students. Already there is a demonstrable
improvement in the reading ages of Year 8 students.
Woonona High School teachers are looking forward to the full implementation of the Gonski funding model as our experience
to date clearly demonstrates that the children in our care will benefit from the personalised teaching and learning programs it
will have the capacity to implement if the remaining two thirds of the Gonski model is committed to and fully funded.
The teachers of Woonona High School strongly endorse the Gonski needs-based model of education funding.

Boori Monty Pryor Visits
On Thursday 23 June, Year 7 students enjoyed a visit to the school by Boori Monty Pryor. Monty uses a lot of humour to project
his ideas and our students were totally engrossed in his stories. Boori's stories are about finding the strength within to deal
with challenges, and his skill is to create positive visions of the future for both Indigenous and all Australians.
Boori Monty Pryor is an Indigenous Australian writer best known as a storyteller and as the inaugural Australian Children's
Laureate. Monty was born in North Queensland. His father is from the Birrigubba of the Bowen region and his mother from
Yarrabah (near Cairns), a descendant of the Kungganji and Kukuimudji. Boori has worked in film, television, modeling, sport,
music and theatre-in-education. He has written several award-winning books with Meme McDonald including Maybe
Tomorrow, My Girragundji, The Binna Binna Man and Njunjul the Sun. His picture book collaboration with Jan Ormerod, Shake
a Leg, won the Prime Minister's Literary Award for Children's Fiction in 2011.
Wollongong Indigenous Career Kickstart Education Day
(WICKED)
On Wednesday 29 June, eight Aboriginal Woonona High School students attended the first WICKED event hosted by Warrigal
Employment at the Innovation Campus of the University of Wollongong where they gathered information regarding apprenticeships, traineeships, university, TAFE and a raft of other post school options.

Careers News
Ex Student Success!
Ex Woonona High School student Brennan Hatton recently revisited to speak to students about his amazing career in computer
game development.
After completing his HSC, Brennan left WHS in 2010 and studied at Wollongong University for two and a half years. He then
moved to America (and lived in Silicon Valley) where he worked as a games developer and developed virtual reality glasses.
He has now returned to Wollongong where he is a cofounder of a company called “Devika” which runs game development
classes in which students learn to design their own games. He is also returning to UOW to complete more study.

Career Inspiration
from UOW
On Thursday 23 June speakers from the
University of Wollongong visited WHS to
talk to Year 10 students about the career
pathways and study options that are
available to them.
Mr Chamberlain (Careers Adviser)
organised these talks and the visit from
Brennan Hatton (above) as he believes
that
students should have all the
knowledge they need to make informed
decisions about Career pathways.
The careers expo (for Years 10 and 12), work experience, and various speakers from a range of professions and study
institutions throughout the year all help our students with their career decisions.

Year 8 Stencil Art
Year 8 Visual Arts class have studied Stencil Art in term 2, looking at the
Wonder Walls festival held in Wollongong annually and the Stencil Art prize
competition. Students have learnt the skills of stencil cutting and spray
painting to create artwork that represent their identity.

Year 10 Early Childhood Studies
The Early Childhood Studies course aims to develop
understanding, skills and strategies to enable students
to
support and foster positive growth and development in the
young children with whom they interact through the
provision of safe, nurturing and challenging environments.
This week the Year 10 Exploring Early Childhood class was
excited by the visit of a real life baby . The visit was in
preparation for the students to take home a “doll” which is a
simulated baby. The doll will require feeding, changing and
nurturing 24 hours a day and will record the actions of their
carer. Parents have been warned there could be some
sleepless nights!

This week Ms Epton and her Year 9 Mathematics class celebrated the end of term in style with a special lunch of pizza and soft
drinks. Ms Epton said her class had been working hard and deserved a treat.
Ms Epton will be taking leave for the rest of this year and we would like to wish her well for her break and the many travels she
has planned.

Mr Rayner (Head Teacher Welfare), would like to alert
parents to a new website he has come across which he feels
will be of great benefit to parents. The site contains very
valuable information and extensive help for parents regarding
Social Networking and the risks involved.
There is information on popular sites such as face book,
instagram, snapchat and twitter and important information
for parents with direct links to help lines such as:





How to report abusive, inappropriate, offensive
material.
How to get cyber images removed
Help with cyber bullying
Privacy and safety tips for parents
How to put a lock on specific sites
The site is an Australian Government site posted by the Office
of the Children’s eSafety Commissioner.
