START a statewide organizing/lobbying chapter; FIND OUT how to make an existing chapter better; and NETWORK with fellow state chapters! SEMINAR Monday, 10:30 - 11:30 am I f your state has it’s own organizing/lobbying chapter; if it had a chapter that is no longer in operation; or if it’s never had formal organization, the “TEAM STATE” seminar at EXPO 2016 (August 8, 10:30-11:30 am) will provide tips and valuable information on what you can do right now to help protect your club and fellow club owners in your state. This “team” of speakers will offer their success stories in regard to defeating negative legislation in their states, as well as offer tips on how to set up and run an effective statewide organizing and lobbying chapter. “Meeting and networking with other club owners at Larry Kaplan Jill Chambers the 2015 EXPO helped our Atlanta club executives learn about issues that affect the industry,” says Jill Chambers, Executive Director, ACE of Georgia. “We plan to bring a strong delegation to New Orleans this summer!” Scheduled to appear on the “TEAM STATE” seminar are: Larry Kaplan, Executive Director of ACE of Michigan; Jill Chambers, Executive Director of the new ACE of Georgia chapter; Jeff Levy, Executive Director of three statewide chapters in New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania; Jim St. John, current ACE National President; and Luke Lirot, noted First Amendment attorney. Jeff Levy Jim St. John Luke Lirot Why you and your staff should attend the Sunday, 3:30 - 5:30 pm COAST Training Seminar A detailed, hands-on COAST (Club Operators Against Sex Trafficking) Training Seminar will be presented at the upcoming 2016 Gentlemen’s Club EXPO in New Orleans Aug. 7-10, and all EXPO attendees are invited. Mike Ocello The COAST Training Seminar is from 3:30-5:30 pm Aug. 7, and will be presented by ACE Board Member Micheal Ocello, President/ COO of the PT’s Showclubs chain; Kate Reilly, Special Agent with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Homeland Security Investigations; and Trooper Justin Berry from the Louisiana State Police. Club owners and their key staff are urged to attend because: — Receiving COAST training educates club staff on how to identify and report possible human trafficking incidents. — Receiving COAST training demonstrates to community groups and local authorities that your club is part of the solution and in some states can impact the renewal of your license. — Every seminar attendee receives an official COAST Training Certificate of Attendance. — Saving a person from the maltreatment of human trafficking is an important thing to do. Ocello reports that Indiana recently passed a law that states “in determining whether to revoke, suspend or refuse to renew the permit issued for a licensed premises” authorities will consider “whether the permit holder has provided training ... to employees ... to increase the awareness of human trafficking and assist victims of human trafficking” through a training program that has been approved by “a nationwide association made up of operators who run adult entertainment establishments.” For more information on COAST, visit Acenational.org/ COAST. “My experiences have taught me that if employees are better prepared for an emergency, even a terrorist attack, they have a much better chance of helping your guests and surviving that emergency.” From Tweets to Shooting Down Club Violence Monday, 11:30 am - 1 pm A special 90-minute seminar to help eliminate club violence with proper training & tactics! J ust go to Google News and enter “strip club” and a number of the stories that will pop up include incidents of physical violence either inside or outside of an adult club. So how do you, an adult club owner/ operator, properly handle Robert Smith a fight or worse — a potential terrorist incident — inside or outside of your club, or prevent such an incident from occurring in the first place? Nightclub Security Consultants’ Robert Smith will offer very specific instruction on how to better train your club’s staff and secure your club at the “Shooting Down Club Violence” seminar on Monday, August 8, from 11:30 am to 1 pm. “This may not be a fun topic to discuss, but I can’t stress enough how important it is to discuss it anyway,” says Smith. “Besides being a retired 20-year veteran police officer, I’ve been teaching security guards, security hosts, bouncers, managers and owners of bars, clubs and other alcohol licensed establishments for nearly 18 years. My experiences have taught me that if employees are better prepared for an emergency, even a terrorist attack, they have a much better chance of helping your guests and surviving that emergency.” Butts in the Seats Tuesday, Noon - 1 pm S ocial media, text messages and email blasts are all among the ways in which adult clubs can promote themselves, either for free or for a very low cost, and reach potential customers directly through their smart phones. Are they effective? Absolutely! But what are the strategies clubs must employ to ensure the success of their digital marketing? Is Facebook actually “dead”? Has Instagram replaced Twitter as the number-one social media platform for adult nightclub promotion? These questions and others will be answered by social media experts, who will offer specific tips on how to maximize your social media and digital presence, while turning those marketing efforts into butts in the seats. At EXPO 2016, speakers will include Kelly Shibari of the PRSM Group (Public Relations Social Media); Jenna Gross of Moving Targets; and Duffy Franclemont of J Dog Media. “Social media marketing is not something you can ignore,” says Shibari. “You can’t start a social media campaign, work on it for a month, then walk away from it, expecting those posts to somehow become viral, or even retain any sort of traction. Once you’ve started, you MUST work on maintaining momentum, so your customers know they are being heard. It’s not just about putting a few ads on a few social networks and then forgetting it.” “All too often, adult nightclubs struggle with a consistent look and message delivered through their social media channels,” adds Gross. “For these types of businesses, a consistent look needs to be conveyed in order to maintain higher clientele numbers. They must capture the environment that they want customers to come to in a limited frame. A club’s social media presence must remain focused; it’s as important as a club’s website.” Kelly Shibari Jenna Gross Duffy Franclemont For the first time ever at EXPO, a T.I.P.S. —Training for Intervention ProcedureS— Seminar to train and certify club owners, GMs, bartenders and servers! “tips” training sEMINAR! Monday, 1 - 2 pm, presented by Trevor Estelle, VP with TIPS S erving alcohol isn’t a problem ... until it’s a problem. When it comes to serving alcohol service, club owners should be aware of two trends that can affect their bottom line. First, there has been a significant increase in the number of legal actions being taken against clubs for serving alcohol to intoxicated customers. Many of these cases are being settled out of court for millions of dollars. Second, there is a growing prohibitionist movement that is making it more and more difficult to sell and consume alcohol. If you’re like most club owners, alcohol service accounts for a large portion of your revenue. You need to be aware and concerned! What can we do? It is imperative that you keep your customers safe, while protecting your employees, establishment, and franchise from lawsuits. By becoming certified in a responsible alcohol server training course, you are making a reasonable effort to prevent underage consumption, drunk driving, and intoxication. In addition, you will improve customer service, receive discounts on liquor liability insurance, and you demonstrate to the community that you and your establishment have zero-tolerance policy when it comes to selling alcohol to underage and/or intoxicated customers. Whether it be ignition interlocks in every vehicle, increased taxes on alcohol, and/or decreasing the legal BAC limit to operate a motor vehicle, it is getting to the point where customers are scared and confused when it comes to consuming alcohol in public. This apprehension will eventually eat into your bottom line. To combat this movement, we must arm ourselves with education and training. A reputable training program, such as the TIPS Program, will train and certify your staff on how to recognize signs of intoxication, effectively intervene to prevent problem situations, and handle refusal situations with greater confidence. This will, in turn, protect your assets and quell the prohibitionist movement. Trevor Estelle, Vice President at TIPS, will be offering a session during this year’s EXPO that you won’t want to miss. The session will cover everything from effective measures clubs can take to prevent underage sales, intoxication and drunk driving to developing a sound alcohol service policy to jurisdictional laws and regulations that govern the sale, service, and consumption of alcohol. Establishment and governments across the country are requiring TIPS training. To learn how you can get TIPS certified, please visit www.gettips.com or be sure to attend this year’s EXPO. “You will improve customer service, receive discounts on liquor liability insurance, and you demonstrate to the community that you and your establishment have zero-tolerance policy when it comes to selling alcohol to underage and/or intoxicated customers.” — Estelle on the “TIPS” seminar at EXPO Trevor Estelle Also for the first time ever at EXPO, the “Urban Club” panel ever will address the differences between traditional clubs and urban clubs, and what club owners need to consider if they’re contemplating an urban format. The “URBAN CLUB” SECRET Monday, 1 - 2 pm I n several cities across the country—Atlanta, Miami, New York, just to name a few—“urban” clubs are among the most popular adult club venues. But what exactly is making them so successful? What aspects of their format can a traditional adult nightclub adapt? And if a club owner is considering changing their format to that of an “urban club,” what are some of the critical components of club operation that need to be considered? Our panel of “urban club” owners and operators—D.C. Glenn, formerly a DJ at legendary urban club Magic City in Atlanta and former club executive for Strokers, also in Atlanta; Jack Pepper, an industry veteran who now owns Club Babe’s in Atlanta, a club which adopted an urban format in 2012; and Ryan Weaver of the Club Onyx clubs—will discuss the differences between their clubs and “traditional” adult nightclubs, why these clubs are so popular, what needs to be considered before any a club adapts a more “urban” format. “You have club owners that are good ole boys, and it shows with their clubs; and then you have some club owners that know what is popular now, like black clubs, but also know that they have to have someone, like a GM, to run it for them because they know the culture,” says Glenn, Glenn became well known as a member of the hip-hop duo Tag D.C. Glenn Jack Pepper Ryan Weaver Team which wrote and recorded the famous track, “Whoomp (There It Is).” “A white owner just can’t open a black club and expect it to work if they don’t know the culture. Perhaps a good example of this would be what (the Galardi South club chain) did with King of Diamonds down in Miami when it opened. Same goes if you have a Spanish club. If it’s a white club owner, they need to have the right people to run it and that starts with understanding the culture.” “One of the reasons I’ve had success in the ‘urban club’ market is because I took the more traditional operational club practices and brought them over to the urban club industry,” says Pepper, the former VP of Marketing for the Galardi South chain. “In my experience, it’s 50 times easier to market urban clubs than traditional clubs.” “Urban Club of the Year” Award added to 2016 ED Awards lineup! In addition to our first-ever EXPO seminar devoted to “urban clubs,” ED Publications has added its first-ever “Urban Club of the Year” Award. This category will recognize the eight top “urban clubs” in the country, and will be included as a new category on the pre-nominations ballot at the official ED Awards website, www.theEDawards.com. “We recognized that there was an entire niche of adult nightclubs—a very successful niche—that was not being properly recognized by our Annual ED Awards,” says ED Publications’ Associate Publisher, Dave Manack. “To this end, we have introduced the only ‘national’ award for the nation’s top urban adult clubs.” The “Urban Club of the Year” Award will be presented, along with several other ED Awards, at the EXPO’s Official Opening Night Showcase Party and Pre-ED Awards on Monday, August 8th, at Republic NOLA. Tuesday, Noon - 1 pm Tuesday, 11 am - Noon B ar food: It doesn’t seem too complicated and can definitely David add to Simmons your club’s bottom line. But what are the tips to doing it—and doing it right? Our food service expert— David Simmons, Director of Operations of the “Bombshells” breastaurant chain and an executive with the RCI Hospitality club chain—will help clubs with the information and insight they need to either add bar food to their club’s repertoire, or improve its profitability at their club if already offered. “People go to adult nightclubs for the entertainment, but food is an additional element that can not only help bring customers in, it can help keep them there,” says Simmons. “They think, ‘I’m here for the entertainment, but I would love a great burger.’ People will order food if there is good quality; it always has to be about quality. In clubs, food becomes something extra, but we find if we put out a good product, you aren’t selling just a few burgers a day—you’re selling 100 a day. “Incorporating food into your adult venue is going to take a lot of planning,” Simmons adds. “You see people say, ‘I want to do food’, and then just throw it together. That doesn’t work. Food is very different, and there are a lot of elements to food. Even with a burger you’re talking about the right bun, the right meat, the right cheese, the right sauces, the right tomato, lettuce, pickle, etc., and that’s just one product. A lot of planning needs to go into it. Don’t just throw together a menu and put it out there and end up with items that aren’t right. It’s extremely important to sit back, take your time and not rush to do it all.” N ew-school versus oldschool? The best ways to build clientele? The keys to finding the best entertainers? The best music format? Who’s really in charge—the owner or the general manager? What would it be like to be in the “war room” with a handful of Dean Reardon in-the-trenches club operators, debating the most critical operational topics in the industry today? Find out during the EXPO’s “The Great From the Trenches Debate” panel session, which will feature club executives— Dean Reardon, Frankie Fusco and Warren Colazzo of Thee Dollhouse in Tampa—who are “in Frankie Fusco the trenches” every day in their respective venues. “I’m not the kind of person who can micromanage clubs or ‘call the shots’ from 100 or 1,000 miles away; I need to be in the trenches with each individual club to know exactly what works in that market,” says Reardon, an industry veteran and Vice President with Warren Colazzo the Christie’s Cabaret chain of clubs. “Club owners should be listening to the guys and girls in the trenches every day, and managers should talk to customers to make sure they know the pulse of what’s really happening in the club and in that market.” “I’m in the trenches six days a week—I have to be,” adds Fusco, another industry veteran who is the General Manager for the Hustler Club in San Francisco. “Today, the biggest challenge in the day-to-day operations is keeping up with the daily social media requirements and staying relevant. The ‘old school’ promotions that clubs used to do simply don’t work anymore.” “If you could ask one of the industry’s most successful operators a question about the current state of the industry, and what the future holds for it, what would it be?” The State of Our “Union” is . . . Wednesday, 11 am - Noon O f all the reasons people attend the Annual EXPO, our polls consistently show that the number-one reason is to network with fellow industry pros. At EXPO 2016, the format of “state of our union” address is simple: “If you could ask one of the industry’s most successful operators a question about the current state of the industry, and what the future holds for it, what would it be?” This EXPO panel Ken DeGori will feature several top club owners/operators, representing national club chains from major cities as well as single clubs in smaller markets. And through the EXPO website (www. theEDexpo.com) and ED’s Eric Langan social media (Twitter and Facebook), we’ll allow EXPO attendees the chance to submit their own specific question to this select group of panelists. Scheduled to appear on the “State of Our Union” panel is: Ken DeGori, co-owner Scott Lizza and operator of the E11EVEN club in Miami; Eric Langan, President & CEO of the Rick’s Cabaret club chain; Scott Lizza, owner of Monroe’s of Palm Beach and Double Dee’s Ranch & Saloon; and Jason Mohney, President of the Deja Vu/Hustler Clubs chain. Jason Mohney Legal Panel & 2016 Election Special Wednesday, Noon - 1 pm A s yet another Presidential election year is upon us in 2016— one that promises to be one of the most controversial in the past 40 years—our panel will discuss and debate the potential impact this election can and will have upon the adult nightclub industry, from judicial nominations to national legislation. They’ll also discuss what power adult club owners, operators and staff wield via their ability to register voters and promote specific candidates or political agendas. Set to discuss the legal aspects of the upcoming election is esteemed First Amenedment attorney John Weston, who offered this prose on behalf of the seminar: “‘These are the times that try men’s souls,” wrote Thomas Paine on December, 23 1776, adding, ‘Tyranny, like hell, is not easily conquered….What we obtain too cheap, we esteem too lightly.’” “Two centuries later, Merle Haggard sang, John Weston ‘I wish a buck was still silver / It was back when the country was strong / Back before Elvis/ Before the Vietnam war came along / Before The Beatles and ‘Yesterday’/When a man could still work, still would / The best of the free life behind us now/ And are the good times really over for good?’” “The words of both men have an eerie poignancy for this election season, and, once again, we must try to make some sense out of Joe Redner the senseless,” Weston adds. “Please join my distinguished colleagues and me in our quest to characterize America, liberty, the omnipresence of tyranny and the price of our ceaseless vigilance. We will hold a mirror up to all and ask ‘are the good times really over for good?’” Joining Weston in a debate-style capacity will be two club owners: Joe Redner, the famed Mons Venus owner who also ran for Tampa City Jerry Westlund Council and has always been very politically active, who will be presenting the “Democrat” side; and Jerry Westlund, outspoken owner of the Fantasy Showclubs/Pony Clubs chain, who will be presenting the “Republican” side. “[Former President Bill] Clinton judicial nominations have left us all in the cold and simply fattened industry lawyers’ pockets,” says Westlund, boldly. “It’s time to try something new for this year’s election!” “There are only a few top positions in most markets, so how does a DJ become the ‘top dog’ in their market? And how will a club benefit from having the top DJ in that market?” How to be How to Be Electric on the Mic! the #1 DJ in your market Presented by PANDA (Professional Adult Nightclub DJ Association) Monday, Noon - 1 pm B uilding on the momentum of two years’ worth of packed panel rooms, the “DJ School” concept returns to EXPO 2016. Session moderator DJ Platypus, Jimmy Boucher& DJ Platypus corporate head DJ for the Rick’s Cabaret club chain, will once again offer hands-on tips and DJ-specific training that will not only educate and enable club DJs to be truly “electric” on the microphone, but will explain how these skills translate into an “electric” club environment. Joined by fellow DJ Jimmy Boucher of Monroe’s of Palm Beach, the pair will both entertain and inform the audience with live demonstrations designed to present a “live” club environment. DJ seminars sponsored by StripJointsMusic.com and Concrete Marketing! At EXPO 2016, PANDA will once again host their own pre-EXPO bash. The PANDA 2016 Awards Banquet and After Party is slated for Sunday evening, August 7th (venue and exact time TBA). For information and further details on the event, visit PandaMembers.org. Sponsored by A Entertainment, StripJointsMusic.com and The Ritz Houston. Wednesday, 11 am - Noon B eing the top DJ not only in your club, but in your entire market, is the aspiration for many adult club DJs/emcees. But what does it take to become known as the best of the best? As any successful club DJ knows, being the best extends beyond the booth. What type of relationship do you have with club management and entertainers? How do you conduct yourself both inside and outside of the booth? This seminar, presented by PANDA, will outline the critical components to becoming a top club DJ. “Being an adult nightclub DJ is a competitive business!” says Dane Hansen, President of PANDA and DJ with the Paper Moon clubs. “There are only a few top positions in most markets, so how does a DJ become the ‘top dog’ in their market? What separates the good DJs from the great DJs? How can a DJ improve or add to their skills? How can managers, staff and entertainers make the club’s DJ better? What trends are the top DJs following that other DJs should learn? How will a club benefit from having the top DJ in their market? These questions and more will be answered by our panel at EXPO.” Speakers will include Hansen, as well as Ilan Fong, PANDA Secretary & Board Member, also resident DJ at Kahoots, Columbus Ohio; and Danny Meyers, Chairman of the PANDA Broadcast Committee and also of The Harem in Dayton Ohio.
