President’s Message
Dear Fellow Members
It seems as though only a few months have passed since I first addressed
you as your new President, a year ago. They say time flies when you are
having fun and indeed, it has been an absolute pleasure to serve you, and
I sincerely thank you for the honour.
We Hear You
Throughout the year, as a General Committee (GC) Member, we have set
about communicating with you more frequently across more subjects, to
ensure you are kept well abreast of Club news and progress. Along with
increased communication modes, we also ensured that we enhanced our
feedback channels, to better enable us to hear from you. We are listening,
and we have been guided by the collective ‘Voice of Member’ on matters,
large and small. Owing to the thousands of comments that Membership
has shared with us, we’ve been given better insight to serve you.
Annual General Meeting
We urge you to play a part in our future by attending and voting at our
upcoming Annual General Meeting (AGM), 30 May. And as we prepare
ourselves for the AGM with resolutions we believe will better serve the Club,
we not only reflect upon the solid year that just transpired, but equally so
upon the changing economic climate in Singapore, and beyond. The
cautious financial environment can already be felt within the walls of our
Clubhouse. This is a defining time. Please have your say, and participate
with your questions and your vote.
Headwinds
Though we’ve just closed our fiscal year, a year with unprecedented
Member engagement, a stellar calendar of 150th celebrations, and the
long-awaited opening of Tang Yun, usage and financial metrics on our
dashboard for March and April bring home the important role of the GC.
Collectively, we give very serious consideration to effectively plan for
continued fiscal health and strong Member satisfaction. We appreciate
and respect that our role requires us to protect that we remain the premier
Club in Singapore for the next 150 years and beyond.
Productivity
Tanglin cannot continue to crawl on account of our outdated, inefficient
and un-integrated IT systems. Highly manual, unproductive processes,
contribute toward a hefty payroll. These ever-escalating payroll costs will
cripple us in the intermediate term if they are not contained through the
prudent deployment of technology.
Labour Crisis
Further contributing toward escalating payroll costs is the industry-wide
labour crisis. The service industry competes hard for very limited resources,
which not only drives the cost of labour up, but also means that we cannot
recruit sufficient personnel, thus leaving us short-handed across most
aspects of the Club. Those we do hire, often leave prematurely for greener
pastures. Our records show that our turnover grew in 2015, particularly
amongst relatively new (1-2 years), unionised, positions. As a result, our core
Team has to work even harder, which as you can appreciate, can create
morale and service challenges.
Investing in IT
More than ever, we heed the need to invest in robust Enterprise Resource
Planning (ERP) business-management software. My esteemed GC
colleague, and Information Technology Sub-Committee (ITSC) Convenor,
Glenn Bryce, will be reporting via NewsBites and our digital screens on the
efforts, led by IBM, to prepare for a major overhaul of our IT systems. Please
make the time to apprise yourself of our progress and come prepared to
the AGM to vote on this important and necessary investment. I also take
this opportunity to thank Glenn, and the Committee Members of ITSC, for
their tireless efforts this year.
More Guest Rooms
This brings me to another important AGM
proposal – the increase in guest rooms from 16 to
27. Year-long, we have been reporting to you on
this necessary project. I say necessary because
our accommodation is an outstanding way to
augment our financial position. Rooms, as you
know, have very few associated operating
costs, which means their revenue contributes
significantly toward funding Club overheads.
Fiscal Prudence
As reported last month, we have now begun the
conversion to LED lights within the indoor tennis
courts. And shortly, we will go to tender, to further
bring down the rate with which we purchase
our electricity. Both initiatives will drive down our
cost of utilities. As reported in prior issues, Tangles
will shift to a more casual, healthier, self-service
concept. This will help us control payroll and
contribute toward alleviating our labour crunch.
Subscription Increase
Despite efforts noted above, early indicators
suggest a balanced budget will not be possible
without an increase in subscriptions, as reported
in the April issue. Do apprise yourself and join us
at the AGM.
A Word of Gratitude
As is the tradition each May, we gather together
our volunteers for an appreciation cocktail
to say thank you. I would also like to take this
opportunity to say that we are blessed to have so
many committed and talented Sub-Committee
and Section Members, who give countless hours
of their time to make Tanglin even better. I
salute each and every one of these very special
Members!
And on a final note, my dear fellow Members,
I’d like to thank YOU for what has been a
memorable and special year for me as your
President. I am forever grateful for this unique
opportunity.
Respectfully
Robert Wiener

Editor’s Message
"Your voice and vote
matter, as they determine
the future of our Club."
Dear Fellow Members
As mentioned in last month’s issue, as a trial, we are combining the magazine issues for the months of May and
June this year into a single May-June combined issue, which you now have in your hands. During this period, the
Club’s electronic communications channels (NewsBites, the Club website, and the digital screens) will continue to
serve you any new updates or events that are not in the May-June combined issue. If you still haven’t signed up for
NewsBites, and would like to, please drop an email to [email protected].
I was recently looking through the comments of the most recent Club-wide survey (the Marcom team is still poring
through and analysing the feedback comments), and one of the comments, out of several hundred, stood out to
me. The comment was only four words long, but it spoke loudly to me about what I think the heart of this Club is all
about. The comment read, “I love this club!” That’s it. Just four words. But when I read it, something in me resonated
with it. And I can think of many other Members who would very much agree with that comment as well. I then
began to wonder how many other clubs in Singapore would have Members who would say that about their clubs.
And honestly, I really can’t think of any. Most people I know who join a social club only have an entirely functional
relationship with that club: They join the club just to use the facilities of their interest (such as the gym, or the swimming
pool, or the tennis court), and to have a meal. And then they go home. But for a club to have members who don’t
just use the club facilities and F&B outlets, but enjoy spending time hanging out there, and interacting with the other
members, speaks of a club that has more than just a functional relationship with its members. And I think this is what
makes The Tanglin Club special.
There are many Members who truly love this Club. They enjoy participating in the Club’s various activities and events,
and interacting with other Members. And perhaps, it’s this rich culture of interaction that explains the cordiality and
friendliness amongst the Members and staff that is hard to find in other social clubs. Perhaps, it is for this reason that
explains why this Club has a higher proportion of Members who volunteer their time in the various Committees and
Sub-Committees, simply because they do care for the Club, and want it to become better. I am aware that the
culture that I’ve described above does sound little unique for a social club, but I think maybe this is what makes The
Tanglin Club stand out.
On a final note, the Club’s Annual General Meeting is approaching (Monday, 30 May). Do come and make your
voice heard on the various proposals and resolutions lined up for the meeting. Your voice and vote matter, as they
determine the future of our Club. I quote a fellow General Committee (GC) Member (yet again), “One thing I’ve
learned in my GC tenures is that our membership is wise and can be trusted to do the right thing.” And I’m sure he’s
right about that. After all, the Club has been around much longer than any of us.
That’s all I have. I wish you the pleasant, well-engaged, and meaningful life.
Enjoy our magazine.

General Manager’s Message
Dear Members
Viva Mexico
This month, our global culinary ‘travels’
take us to Mexico. In the spirit of México,
H.E. Rogelio Granguillhome Morfin,
Ambassador of Mexico in Singapore,
will grace our special dinner in the
Churchill Room on the 6th. He joins us in
welcoming Guest Chef Jorge Antonio
Rosas Leon, who will be creating some
Mexican favourites that evening. Chef
Jorge is also our featured Chef every
Sunday Lunch at the Churchill Room in
May and on the 28th, Poolside, for our
Mexican Fiesta. We do hope you’ll join us.
Mum’s the Word
Mothers take centre stage at the Club
on 8 May, as we deservingly honour and
pamper them. Both the Wheelhouse
and the Churchill Room are featuring
Mother’s Day Buffets, whilst the Tea
Room is relaxing bye-laws to allow the
little ones to come all dressed up to
treat Mums to our ‘High Tea’.
Ode to Alpha Males
June is “Gents” month. Think: cigars,
beer, beef, and you’ve got the picture.
We’ve lined up a series of great whisky
tasting master classes, the return of
the Tomahawk in the Churchill Room,
the Gentlemen’s Cut on promo in the
Tavern, a superhero-themed High Tea,
Father’s Day Brunch, and heaps more.
Turning Tides
Each year, the General Committee
(GC) adopts an operating budget to
guide the Club financially. This fiscal
year, an even more aggressive budget
was set. The reasoning for this bullish
outlook, approved in the last quarter
of 2015, was based on the fact that for
two years, the Club had seen steady
growth in Member patronage, and
further, it was deemed reasonable
that the newly opened Tang Yun and
the freshly renovated function rooms
would bear plenty of fruit. Moreover,
with dues set at 2008 levels, and prices
pushed downward, a significant hike in
the cost of labour/operating costs since
2008 requires a high revenue target
to land the Club’s required balanced
operating budget. And whilst January
and February posted healthy results, the
past two months have been notably
quieter at the Club. This trend has been
felt island-wide, throughout various
industries, including hospitality.
Value-Engineering
With the current market sentiment, we
have set about to find novel ways to
bring Members added-value. Over
the past few months, we have been
highlighting dozens of “Every Day
Good Value” efforts, which are now
proving quite timely. When you factor
in that Club prices are GST inclusive,
do not attract service or parking
charges, nor require a profit margin,
the Club offers a decidedly better
value proposition than most options in
town. We certainly hope that Members
will continue to show support for the
Club, with steady patronage.
New Products & Services
Additionally, we have begun trying
unique approaches to find products
and services that you might find of
some use. One such experiment was
the Treasury Wine Estate Tasting and
Sale. By offering prices, far below
market, in just six hours, Members
purchased 1,400 bottles of wine. This
suggests that we struck the right cord.
Another experiment involves the
current Mother’s Day Pearl Promotion,
featuring exclusive Tanglin Club
Member pricing, far below market.
The promotion, which started midApril, has similarly seen a very positive
uptake. And starting 1 May, we are
also retailing whiskies and spirits in the
Tea Room, at below market prices.
You may have also noticed that there
is a laundry depot in the car park that
we are currently trialling. If you have
suggestions, I would be delighted to
discuss them with you. You can contact
me at [email protected].
Controlling Overheads
With new revenues sources, we are
better able to cover Club overheads.
However,
given
the
escalating
headwinds, this may prove more
difficult and insufficient to meet the
Club’s high budget expectations.
Therefore, management has been
tasked to seek new ways to enhance
productivity and control overheads.
We have set out to reduce food waste
by removing three buffets: weekday
Wheelhouse breakfast, Express Lunch
at Tangles, and the Executive Lunch
Buffet at the Churchill Room. Buffets,
unless high in volume, are classic
high waste areas. So whilst we have
removed three unproductive buffets,
we are adding more value to the
Tavern and Wheelhouse Salad Bars. As
reported in the President’s Message,
our energy efficiency efforts continue
with the conversion of the indoor tennis
lighting to LED. This, combined with
going to tender for the purchase of
our electricity supply, will mean lower
utility expense. We have also taken to
increase digital communications to trim
printing costs.
Inventory Management
Our Executive Chef, Eric, as reported last
month, is a certified risk management
auditor, and level three supervisory
Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point
(HACCP) Officer. This well-equips him to
tighten the flow of purchases, reduce
wastage, and overall, enhance inventory
management. Since he oversees
approximately $6 Million in ‘groceries’,
processed
across
approximately
600,000 meals each year, this new
expertise that we have added at the
helm of the Culinary Team, will bode
well for Tanglin.
Efficiency Engineering
On the staffing front, by merging the
Front and Sports Desks, under the
guardianship of Mr Kumar, we were
able to create efficiency and reduce
headcount by one. Similarly, through
a redistribution of work in Sports &
Recreation, we were able to trim
another headcount there. Since both of
these positions were vacant, we simply
ceased recruitment efforts for these
two roles. These efficiency efforts will
continue so that we ensure continued
enhancements and a higher bar, whilst
maintaining our financial health.
On behalf of the Tanglin Team, I would
like to extend a sincere thank you to
the 2015/2016 GC for their tireless efforts
and skilful leadership. Collectively, they
have brought The Tanglin Club to even
greater heights. We cherish memories
from a year full of terrific highlights and
the Team looks forward to continued
progress with the incoming GC come
end-May.
Upwards and onwards

FAREWELL TO FELLOW MEMBERS
DR GEORGE CALDWELL
“Doctor George”, a long-time Member of The Tanglin Club, passed away here
recently. Born in the County of Durham in 1924, the son of a local doctor, he did
well in school. As decided by his father, he was enrolled as a medical student at the
age of 16 despite his own strong preference to study architecture. He submitted
reluctantly and, as he wrote later, found “it is not easy to learn things you are not
interested in”. These studies were interrupted when during the Second World War,
he volunteered to serve in the Royal Navy and was later mentioned in despatches.
His father had died but left instructions that he must continue to study medicine and
qualify. He became a reluctant doctor and later “just somewhere found it was a
very satisfying occupation”. After a few years in north east England, he made one
voyage to the Far East as a ship’s doctor on board a Glen Line cargo/passenger
liner and then, turning down job offers in North America, he came to Singapore in
1958 and joined Bain & Partners as a general practitioner.
The ‘Emergency’, a Communist demand for complete independence, was still on
in many parts of Malaya. George’s duties included covering a number of rubber
estates in Johore every Thursday and though by then, the area was considered relatively safe, there was still a risk
particularly if the visits were made on a different day of the week.
His other duties included inter alia the main clinic in the Medical Hall, in visiting ships, and attending industrial clinics
in various factories, such as Singapore Glassworks and Singapore Traction Company. This was a time of industrial and
political unrest but “black draught”, a strong purgative, “soon taught malingerers not to complain of what they hadn’t
got”.
Dr George loved classical music, particularly Mahler, Bruckner and Shostakovich and supported music and concerts
even in the early days when these were few and far between. He had many friends in many communities even though
in the early days, the races did not mix much socially. George was an exception. Art and history fascinated him and he
also spent many happy times water-skiing.
Dr George had become a partner in Bain & Co and in around 1979, a member of the Gleneagles Hospital Advisory
Committee. He played a leading and decisive role in expanding this into the leading position it holds today. In 1983,
he left the partnership and, clad in his trademark safari suit, set up his practice at Gleneagles Medical Centre where he
continued for many years. A man with a wealth of practical experience, he published books under the pseudonym of Dr
Igor Mortis and pursued his convictions that palm oil was to be avoided at all costs, that injections of Vitamin B12 could
cure many ills and that medicine appeared to have developed into a money making business, being no longer a calling
to help humanity. In his “retirement”, he carried on extensive email correspondence world-wide and with the LTA, PUB,
HSBC, BBC and other organisations too numerous to mention.
We are all the poorer for his passing.
Richard Hale
MR COLIN TAYLOR
Mr Colin Taylor, beloved husband of Mrs Peggy Taylor, passed away peacefully on
1 March 2016, aged 89, in Leeton, New South Wales, Australia.
Colin first moved to Singapore from Malaysia in 1960 where he had set up his own
trading and shipping company. He was an early Member of The Tanglin Club and
was the Vice-President during the Club’s financial year 1999-2000. Colin worked
and travelled throughout Southeast Asia but always looked forward to spending
his free time with friends at the Club, especially during his Balut team competitions.
After a brief period of 2 years working in Hong Kong, he returned to Singapore
where he continued to work until finally deciding to retire in Australia in 2002.
He is dearly missed by Peggy, nieces Monique and Michelle, nephews Keith and
Barry, and all his friends here in Singapore and around the world.

WHITE
ASPARAGUS
SPECIALS
Month of May
Lunch & Dinner
Every spring, white asparagus makes
a brief appearance in markets. You
might be wondering, why is white
asparagus so elusive and hard to
find? It’s because there’s a demand
for it, especially from restaurants,
as Chefs consider it a rare spring
delicacy and appreciate it for its
mellow flavour. What really makes
white asparagus unusual is the fact
that it’s grown in complete sun
deprivation, making it the vampire
of the vegetable world! Join us at
the Tavern this May for a taste of
this delicacy.

2005 was a hot and dry year, producing some of the most tannic
and concentrated wines, with high alcohol and moderate acid
levels, pushing prices up again, past the 2000 Bordeaux. We will
be tasting some mid-range wines 10 years on, where the tannin
should be softer now, to see how they are faring.
The wines we will be tasting are:
Chateau La Dominique 2005
Chateau Lafon Rochet 2005
Chateau Sociando Mallet 2005
Chateau Cantermerle 2005
Chateau Gloria 2005

‘A Helping Hand: Delicious Recipes in English & Tagalog’
is the only dual language English/Filipino cookbook in
Singapore. Helpful for the entire household, this beautifully
illustrated book contains over 80 mouth-watering, yet
practical, Western and local recipes. The English sections
are hugely readable, filled with anecdotes and personality;
the Tagalog parts contain clear, step-by-step instructions
and tips as well as a detailed explanation of ingredients.
‘A Helping Hand’ is full of failsafe recipes for every occasion,
from breakfast to dinner parties and is perfect for people
who like to entertain effortlessly. Violet Oon, Singapore’s
Food Ambassador comments “The Tagalog translations
are an inspired idea. Its glossy pages hold the promise of
everyone’s favourites, from chicken pie to mee goreng.”
Sylvia Tan, cookbook author and newspaper columnist is
also a fan: "This is an engaging and delightful collection
of family recipes which any family would use. And since it
is also written in Tagalog, your household help would also
appreciate it. I loved the personal asides found in each
recipe and yes, the gorgeous pictures!”
Get your copy of ‘A Helping Hand: Delicious Recipes
in English & Tagalog’ at the Book Launch and meet the
author, Frog Michaels. Signed copies of the cookbook,
which has an RRP of $39.99, will be sold at the exclusive
launch price of just $30. We look forward to seeing you
there!
Author Frog Michaels, aside from being a Club Member,

magazine, SilverKris. Frog has lived in Singapore for many
years with her husband, whose family is from Singapore,
and two children. Her blog, changmoh.com, which charts

Fitness: Member Feature
In our occasional series of Member profiles,
we chatted with Ms Jacq Tan who grew up at
The Tanglin Club and joined as a full-fledged
Member post-graduation. Instead of practising
law after being called to the Bar, she chose the
road less travelled and followed her passion for
cycling by starting her cycling tours company.
Over coffee at the Tea Room and via email
correspondence, Jacq shares with us her
interests and exciting adventures around the
world.
I understand you have been a Member since
you were a child. Do you have any fond
memories of the Club?
That’s right, I pretty much grew up at The Tanglin
Club. My parents have been Members as far
as I can remember and my brothers and I grew
up with swim squad, tennis lessons, art class. I
recall attending children’s Christmas parties,
meeting Santa and scoffing mince pies at the
tree-lighting ceremony at the Club Lobby.
Growing up, what were your interests and
hobbies?
Despite my mother’s attempt to ‘feminise’ me
with piano and ballet lessons, I was very much
into sport with competitive swimming, track
and field, cross-country and eventually triathlon
and cycling.
During my bar year, I picked up the lindy hop,
a classic swing dance involving acrobatic high
octane action, and went on to form the Lindy
Hop Ensemble – a dance group that performed
at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, New York’s
Lincoln Centre for the Arts, at local venues like
the Esplanade, Victoria Theatre, Zouk and even
at The Tanglin Club for my brother’s wedding
dinner, no less!
PAGE 31 THE TANGLIN CLUB
Wow – that’s quite a variety! Clearly you’re the sporty type. Was there anything
else on your plate then?
During my University days, I was an avid diver, although sadly I never had the
opportunity to join a Club dive excursion. Upon completing my studies at High
Wycombe, Sheffield and London, I returned to Singapore after being called to
the Bar, never practised law as it’s not my calling, and worked at a non-profit
organisation. During this time, I became a full-fledged Club Member. Three
years ago, I founded my own cycling tours company Jacqtours and have
never looked back since!
Cycling must really be your passion then. Did your love for cycling begin since
childhood?
Ironically I’d always had a phobia of cycling from a childhood cycling
accident. But I swam and ran, did biathlons, then had to take up cycling 10
years ago in order to progress to triathlons. From being my weakest link it has
become my most enjoyed sporting discipline – it was just a matter of doing
it! I’ve since done four ironman triathlons in Langkawi, Malaysia, Busselton,
Western Australia and most recently at Roth, Germany last summer.
Having started cycling in our pancake-flat local terrain, I had a rude shock
when I first rode in Taiwan, an island with more than 200 peaks above 3,000m.
All that non-stop climbing and terrifying descending was enough to put me
in a terrible strop – I got into a really bad mood! With practice, a good bike
fit, useful practical tips from friends and more practice, I am now a climbs
convert! My mission is to share the joy of climbing and descending on bike
with everyone who comes on board my tours. Truly it takes the enjoyment
of cycling to a new level. And the mountains are where the sights are most
spectacular, and ever changing.
Where have you travelled for cycling? Do you have a favourite cycling
destination?
My cycling adventures have taken me to Taiwan, Japan, Philippines,
Indonesia, Croatia, France, England and Australia. This summer, I will be riding
Tahoe and San Francisco’s wine country, all in the name of serious cycling
tours research of course. I’ve recently returned from a reconnaissance ride in
the south of Kyushu, Japan where the riding is absolutely stunning with views
of “old Japan” where we rode past houses of Samurai, active volcanoes and
cherry blossoms. What is my favourite destination? My next! Each destination is
unique and can’t be compared to each other, much like apples and oranges.
But a truly unique and exotic destination that I’m looking forward to is Croatia.
I’m curious – why is Croatia a top cycling destination in your
opinion?
Its fantastic roads and superlative sights, food and
accommodation make Croatia a world-class cycling
destination. My upcoming Croatia tour features 572km
and almost 8,000m of climbing on the bike. The route starts
from Zagreb in the north to Dubrovnik in the south, via quiet
back roads through dramatic mountains and by the famous
Croatian coast.
Even better, non-cycling spouses are welcome too, with plenty
to experience off the bike, such as exploring the medieval
cobblestone streets of United Nations Educational, Scientific
and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) listed cities, shopping for
keepsakes, enjoying tasty Mediterranean cuisine and wine,
relaxing by the beautiful beaches, and more. That said, I really
hope to get more Members interested in cycling!
One last question – given that you have invested several years
studying for your degree, would you ever consider practising
law in the future?
I’ve often been asked this question and I can understand
why it might seem a “waste” not to carry on practising after
the investment in time and resources. I credit my parents for
accepting my decision and to my dad especially for the early
exposure to sports. It has taken me quite a while to discover
that sports is where my life passion lies and I am grateful
every day for the opportunity to finally pursue what I love.
Furthermore, my legal training in critical thinking, logic and
meticulous attention to detail comes in handy every day in
my development of Jacqtours!
Where is Croatia?
Formerly part of Yugoslavia, Croatia joined the European Union in
mid-2013. It sits at the crossroads of Central Europe, Southeast Europe,
and the Mediterranean. It borders Hungary, Serbia, Bosnia and
Herzegovina, Montenegro, the Adriatic Sea and Slovenia. Its capital is
Zagreb in the north and its main coastal city is Dubrovnik (of the Game
of Thrones fame) in the south.
Riding Croatia
Croatia boasts some remarkable roads well-suited for road cycling.
After the last Yugoslavia war, the government channelled international
post-war funding to re-building its road system. Jacqtours’ riding
landscape will alternate between extraordinary karst mountains
inland and the famous island-speckled Croatian coast, avoiding busy
trunkroads as much as possible. The preference for quiet backroads
takes you also to outlying islands, via ferry, where we ride southwards
parallel to the mainland.

March decided that it would be hot. Ice cubes were known to
shrink into the deepest recess of freezers to escape detection.
Yes, dereliction of duty from usually keeping cool. However, the
excuse "It is March" was enough to win the argument.
The 3rd gathering of the Balut Section drew in 21 players from
the heat into the cool environs of our usual playpen. We bid a
fond farewell to Nikki Hardy and will miss her enthusiastic play
and support of the Section. Applause rang the room, and the
assembled thundered off in search of winners. Grace Goh, cool
under pressure and the heat from the herd, distanced herself to
chalk up a total score of 662 points. The runner-up was 40 points
behind so this gives you an idea of how well she was playing that
night. Grace also snared the highest game score (155
points), and in line with the rules, this prize went instead to
Anand Menon with his 143 score.
We will be featuring the contenders for the Balut Max
trophy from next month and that will make the sessions
even more interesting. We begin the Inter-Club round of
games in May and that is always good for some hefty
table thumping!

Firstly, on behalf of the Bridge Sub-Committee, I would like to thank Lily
Lim for all the years she has kindly contributed to the monthly articles
for The Tanglin Club magazine. We certainly appreciate her wit and
natural gift of writing which I lack.
Thank you to all our Bridge Section Members for their support of our first
Bridge and Cocktail Evening. It was a truly jolly evening as we left the
Bridge tables behind and headed for the Churchill Room. Awaiting
us were the barmen with jugs of margaritas and a buffet of delicious
food. Everyone had a lovely time intermingling with one other. We had
a good turn up of 26 ladies – and even Captain Ho attended. To our
surprise, the band started their evening practice session, and Jansie,
Lily and I just couldn't resist getting up to cha cha cha!
For those of you who couldn't make it this time, we are planning more
of these social evenings and hope you can join us next time. Please
see below for our upcoming events at the Cards Room.
Last but not least, we would like to thank Aziz and the staff for helping
to make this event so enjoyable.

TANGLIN CHOIR’S SPRING PERFORMANCE
The Choir had its first Performance for this year on 13 March at the Tea Room, with a full audience of Members and their
families in tow. In spite of the rather gloomy weather with continuous rain, the mood inside was all bright and cheerful! The
Choir Members were in shades of pink heralding the Onset of Spring.
The Choir Master, Albert Tay, a well-known director, composer, choral conductor and vocal coach, brings a depth of
knowledge and experience to our sessions. His unique and fun style of training is noticeable during the Choir’s practices
and performances. Albert clearly sets the tone for every session and performance, and inspires the singers to express their
feelings through the music.
The Choir sings a variety of music genres – Musicals, Evergreens, Contemporary Christian, 70’s, 80’s Music, Chinese and
other languages. Performances happen on a regular basis and the Choir is open to anyone who wishes to take part,
whether experienced or novice.
Many of us have always wanted to sing, but cannot ever bring ourselves to take lessons or join a group because of the
“shyness” to sing in front of others, or just for the fact that we think that we would not be good enough. If you are one of
those, we’d love to hear from you and let us show you how easy it is to sing in a group. Take the first step and join in one of
our complimentary classes on the last Wednesday each month – the next is always advertised in NewsBites. For enquiries,
please call Anqi at 6622 0438 or email [email protected].
Look out for our next performance on Mother’s Day, 8 May, in the Churchill Room at 12.45pm.

DARTS AND HEALTH BENEFITS
The game of darts is actually a professional competitive sport. It’s a challenging game that requires a high level of skill, accuracy
and a steady hand. In fact, there are health benefits when playing a game of darts.
Here are some health benefits of darts:
• Relieves stress: As a leisure activity, darts is a positive diversion that allows you to take a break from work.
• Builds teamwork and social skills: Throwing darts can teach you to interact with others and grow together as a team. Playing
darts is a great way to develop team-building skills both socially and personally.
• Improves hand-eye coordination: Darts can improve your hand-eye coordination due to the high amount of accuracy and
precision involved.
• Improves concentration and strategic thinking: Focus is the key when it’s your turn to aim for the bullseye or the doubles.
Concentration skills are greatly improved when darts become a hobby. It also involves a lot of strategic planning because
each throw is a tactical move.
• Builds confidence: Winning, in darts is no easy task, and with more practice and increased success, it can boost your confidence
and build greater self-esteem.
• Promotes relaxation: As a stress reducer, darts can help you relax in the middle of a busy day. A quick game against a friend
or a solo practice session during a break can do wonders for your mental clarity.
• Instills a sense of self-control: Learning to control your movements can also help with disciplining yourself and gaining a control
over your body when balance and coordination are required.

GOURMET
On 17 March, 9 Members of the Gourmet Section met for
their monthly dinner to savour some fine European cuisine.
It was a 6-course meal, but wide choices to choose from
each section. It was a hard choice as every item seemed
good – the Appetisers, Soups, Entrées and Desserts.
For the Entrées, one could select Steak Tartare, Sea Bass,
Roasted Lamb or Wagyu Beef Short Ribs, to mention a few.
What was really unique was the presentation of sliced, raw
Wagyu Beef Short Ribs on a leaf, resting on a hot stone slab
that is mounted on a small wooden board – like a ping pong bat!
It came sizzling to the table with Himalayan pink salt and then
their homemade sauce on the side. You could cook your
beef the way you like it – rare, medium or well done. Even
chopsticks were provided for the convenience of turning the
meat. This dinner was a really fine experience.

MARCH IN-HOUSE GAME
GOLF SECTION TOUR TO VIETNAM
16 March 2016
The Golf Section’s March Game was held at the
Warren Golf and Country Club with 27 Members
taking part. The weather though hot was dry and
the course was in good condition with the greens
proving tricky as usual. Following the game, our
usual friendly ‘makan kecil’ and a few drinks were
enjoyed.
As a change from the usual Stableford, the
format this time was a ‘Two Person Scramble’, in
which the best shot of the pair was taken every
time. As expected, the scoring was quite good
and everyone enjoyed the different playing
method. The contest was close with the pair Dr
Yung Shing Wai and Alex Eow just pipping Hugh
Hoyes Cock and Jurgen Martiens on count back.
Chris Steffens and Lawrence Ang came third also
on count back. Nearest the Pin winners were
Paul de Souza, Dora Chong, Lawrence Ang and
Raymond Tan.

Enjoying Dinner
In early April, Members of the Golf Section went on tour to Southern Vietnam.
The trip took part in two games close to Ho Chi Minh City. The first at Jeong
San Golf Club involved an interesting boat ride on the Saigon River to get
there, while the second on our last day was at Tan Son Nhat, a relatively
new course close to the airport. Only a few decided to play in our fourth
game, while the remainder of the group relaxed or went sightseeing in Ho
Chi Minh.
Undoubtedly, the highlight of the trip was playing the new championship
course at the Bluffs at Ho Tram Strip. This is a Greg Norman designed course
which is ranked number 74 in the world. It recently hosted an Asian Tour
tournament won by Sergio Garcia, and next year, this will be upgraded
to a full European Tour event. The course is set among magnificent sand
dunes and play is much affected by strong winds, similar to links courses in
Scotland. Our group were so impressed by the course that we persuaded
our agents, Luxury Golf Vietnam, to change our itinerary so we could
tackle it again a second day! If you missed this trip, we would thoroughly
recommend a visit to the Bluffs.
As usual, to make life interesting, we had mini competitions on each of the
first three days. Winners among the Men were Alex Eow, Tan Swee Siong
and David White, while the Ladies Winners were Pauline Tan and Jean
Murdoch. Nearest the Pin Winners on days 1 and 2 were Tan Yew Boon and
David White, with the Most Improved Golfer on day 3 going to Pierre Baer.
Overall, the Men’s and Ladies’ Champions were David White and Jean
Murdoch with Frank Yung having the best overall gross score.
It was a very enjoyable trip with lots of delicious Vietnamese food in Ho
Chi Minh and our usual Golf Section camaraderie and good company
added to the pleasure. Many thanks to Alex Eow for organising the trip and
handling the arrangements with the agents.

NATIONAL LEAGUE AND THE TRENGGANU STATE TEAM FRIENDLY
February and March were again busy months for the Section Bowlers. Many participated in the National League, both for
the Individual and Doubles events, at the Kallang Bowls Green and at The Tanglin Club (TC) Bowls. The Doubles games are
still on. In the Individuals, our Bowlers reached the semi-final stage.
The TC Bowls hosted the State Team from Trengganu over
the weekend of 6 March. The Trengganu bowlers were
mostly from the junior members below age 25. It was a big
surprise for us, as these young bowlers, some 20 of them,
are very active in the game in Trengganu, with many now
representing their state in the Malaysian league. One of
them, in fact, became the International Junior Champion.
We played four bowls on teams of 3s over 18 ends. The
game started at 9.30am and lasted about 2 hours under
very fine, sunny conditions. It was a very hard fought friendly
tournament, and ended with a 3-all draw. Our visitors
were gracious in their games, and declared that they thoroughly
enjoyed the game and our hospitality. The bowlers were then
treated to a delicious buffet lunch at the bowling venue, where
the usual camaraderie spirit prevailed.
For us at the TC Bowls, this friendly game was an eye opener;
we had never encountered so many young bowlers in a friendly
before. This certainly speaks volumes about how Lawn Bowling
can be a popular sport both in Singapore and our own Club!

ANNUAL SINGAPORE
CLOSED JUMBO
SQUASH DOUBLES
TOURNAMENT
Over the weekend of 18 & 19 March,
The Tanglin Club hosted the Annual
Singapore Closed Jumbo Squash
Doubles Tournament, sponsored by
Lexian Electronics. Once again, the
tournament confirmed that Jumbo
Doubles continues to gain popularity in
Singapore.
The Squash Section organised their
Quarterly Birthday Bash for all Members’
birthdays falling in this year’s first quarter.
Recently, the birthday bash event has
taken on a little more significance as
where possible, we organise a friendly
doubles
competition
commencing
around 12.30pm. The competition
organised by Sam Alexander has proved
very popular. All entrants are graded in
terms of their doubles ability and Sam
somehow manages to get a fair lineup of doubles partners who are all very
competitive with each other. By the time
the games are over, everyone is very
hungry and thirsty. The overall winners for
this competition were Garry Matthews
and Al Aspen. Well done guys! Even
better, Gary was one of the birthday
celebrants.
Special thanks to the birthday boys and
contributing Members:

The whole day was a great success and
many thanks to our Sports & Recreation
(S&R) staff who made it such a wonderful
day and to Sam Alexander who pulled
the whole thing together.
PAGE 41 THE TANGLIN CLUB
The tournament was comprised of
three Draws: the Open, the Veterans
and the Juniors. This year’s Junior Draw
was as strong as ever, with a handful
of teams all good enough to win. More
importantly, all of the Juniors showed
exceptional sportsmanship and it is clear
that the sport is in good hands with this
crop of Juniors.
Further testament to the strength of the
level of Junior Squash in Singapore, is
the fact that last year’s winner in both
the Junior and Open Draws returned this
year to win his second consecutive Open
title. Pang Ka Hoe repeated with fellow
national team player Samuel Kang,
winning a close match over Tanglin Club
Member Al Aspen and local squash
professional Vivian Rhamanan.
In the Veterans Draw, the very same Al
Aspen found himself in the finals with
fellow Tanglin Club luminary, David
“Panda Bear” Palmer, only to fall in three
close games. In a surprising twist, Al lost to
both father (Veterans) and son (Open),
which was a Lexian first. Well done to the
Pangs! (Al was not permitted entry into
the Junior Draw.)
All in all, it was a great weekend of
Squash, with great thanks to the Tanglin
Club S&R staff, and of course, this could
not have been possible without the
Event Sponsor Lexian Electronics and
Tanglin Club Member Graham Dare.
Next up, the Royal Bangkok Sporting
Club Tournament will be played during
the 29 April weekend.

FRIENDLY WITH SINGAPORE
ISLAND COUNTRY CLUB (SICC)
Our first friendly of the year was against the Singapore Island
Country Club (SICC) in late February. And it was indeed
friendly – ending 8-8!
There were several competitive matches on show, and both
Men's and Women's teams put on a good show. It was great
seeing some new faces representing the Club, and we hope
more will step forward for our competitive teams.
Thanks to Steven and his team from SICC for being such
gracious hosts. We look forward to the next one!
Note: Our Club is currently playing in the Men's B and C Divisions
of the STA Inter-Club Event and the WITS Spring Season. Please
do email Cielito at [email protected] for
the schedule and come down to support our teams.
‘The Tanglin Smash Hits’ are delighted to emerge top in the

coming in from our somewhat dismal performance in the
previous season.
If you're keen on joining any team or feel you can contribute
to our competitive squads in any way, please email Cielito
and she'll put you in touch with our captains Soo Kui Jien
(Men's) and Lilian Lum (Women's).
We would like to thank the Club for sponsoring us throughout
this whole time and special thanks go to coaches Eric and

our home matches.
Congratulations and thanks to every team member who
worked hard booking courts, arranging games, improving
their own game and strengthening their partnerships, when
we were not eating or drinking!
We are also sad to lose our teammates, Anthea Then and

BOWLING AT SICC
29 February 2016 was an auspicious day, falling on the Leap Year. The purpose of bowling at the Singapore Island Country
Club (SICC) is to offer Bowling Section Members top quality bowling facilities, reduce cost, and grow the membership and
Members’ participation.
MC Cheong kindly offered his carpool services from The Tanglin Club for which we are grateful! Members who attended had
a pleasant and enjoyable evening. The Island Bowl was spacious and comfortable.
As expected, MC scored the highest score for the three games, followed by Pamela Daswani, despite having to learn the
lie of the lanes. Initially, it took a while before the team could figure out the way the bowling ball was rolling on the well-oiled
lanes, but it was well in the end.
All in all, it was a lovely time and we hope that more Section Members will join us for future games.

ANNUAL STAFF DINNER & DANCE
14 March 2016
This year, the Club had our annual Staff Dinner & Dance at One Farrer Hotel & Spa. It was a great night of team bonding with
exciting games and lucky draw prizes. We were also honoured to have the General Committee grace the event. A big thank you
goes to all Members for enabling this very special team celebration. Here are some photos to provide you a snapshot of the night.
THANK YOU TO ALL
OUR SPONSORS FOR
THEIR GENEROSITY

Liu Anqi (Events)
“I am honoured and surprised to win this
prize. I first joined the Club in August 2014 as
a part-timer in the Playroom, and officially
as a full-timer in the Events department in
October that year. My journey in the Club
has been heart-warming and inspiring,
especially with great colleagues around
who help each other unconditionally.
I’m also extremely grateful that the team
is led by a magnanimous leader who creates an unimpeded learning
environment for everyone. The greatest motivation from the job is the sense
of satisfaction one gets when Members and Staff have a great time during
our Club events. Thank you all for your support.”

"I was taken by surprise when I heard my name
being announced during the Dinner & Dance. I
first started working at the Club in October 1993,
so it has been more than two decades now.
It's been such a great journey and I’ve made
many wonderful friends here. I'm truly grateful
for all the support and encouragement from
my fellow colleagues and friends."
