The sunshine vitamin
It’s pretty rare to see the sun in winter, and this leads a lot of people to
become deficient in vitamin D, the ‘sunshine vitamin.’ When sunshine
hits our bare skin, the human body generates vitamin D, which in turn
helps to create strong bones and teeth and a healthy immune system.
You may not notice a direct difference between sunlight and your
health, but German studies published in the American Journal of
Clinical Nutrition have repeatedly shown that low levels of vitamin D
may lead to a higher incidence of cancer, osteoporosis, depression,
and arthritis.
Unfortunately, lying on the beach and hoping for a sunny day probably
isn’t on the cards right now. But don’t worry, there are other natural
ways to get a boost of vitamin D.
Did you know that, along with humans, mushrooms and algae also
generate vitamin D when they’re exposed to sunlight? Mushrooms
and algae are both often high in vitamin D (depending on how they’re
grown). So the next time you’re at the supermarket, pick up a big bag
of Portobello mushrooms. They’re perfect for anyone on a vegetarian
diet, and fit in well with a lot of winter recipes.

It happens to all of us at some stage: there’s a word that’s on the tip of our tongues, but we just cannot remember
what it is. It’s a very frustrating feeling.
The next time you forget a word, try making a fist with your dominant hand. Studies have shown that the simple
movement of clenching your fist may boost your ability to recall memories. It may seem unlikely, but the scientific
evidence behind it suggests that when you clench your fist, the activity in the brain hemisphere on the opposite
side increases. So when you clench your right fist, activity in the left brain hemisphere increases.
The left side of the brain encodes information for right handed people, and vice versa for left handed people.
Research has suggested that participants who clenched their fists were able to improve their memories 15% more
than those in control groups.*

Nuts

Flaky, dry, rough skin is a common problem that often
flares up in the winter weather. It can be really embarrassing
when people notice it, so it’s important to start a routine now
that will keep your skin in great condition over the cold season.
Try applying good quality body oil all over your skin after you step
out of the shower. If you build a routine to do it then, you’re less
likely to forget but oil is also absorbed on damp skin better than dry
skin, so you get the best possible results.
Unsure which body oil to buy? Give coconut oil a shot. There has
been a massive surge in popularity for coconut oil recently and little
wonder, given that you can scoop it onto your skin or spoon it onto
your food! Either way, coconut oil has great health benefits.
Cold pressed virgin coconut oil is antimicrobial, antiviral, and
antifungal. The smell is mild and delicate, so it’s safe to apply
to sensitive areas of the skin. It’s even effective for people
with more serious skin problems. Some clinical trials
have shown that coconut oil may be able to help
those with atopic dermatitis, a type
of reoccurring eczema that
manifests as an itchy
skin rash.

Three reasons to eat leeks
Leeks are often overlooked in the vegetable aisle of the supermarket. They’re
not as well known for their health benefits as other glamorous greens. Leeks are
part of the allium vegetable family, making them a relative of onion and garlic.
They are, however, more mild in flavour than either of those, and are useful for
subtly enhancing the flavours in a meal.
1.
Leeks are full of essential vitamins that the body needs, like manganese,
vitamin B6, vitamin C and folate.
2. It is believed that leeks help to promote cholesterol levels, while at the same
time preventing atherosclerosis and high blood pressure.
3. Leeks may also help to stabilise blood sugar levels.
When selecting leeks at the grocer, go for leeks that are smaller and darkish
green, as these tend to be less fibrous than their bigger counterparts.
You can add them into lots of popular
winter meals, like shepherd’s pie,
vegetable soup, casseroles, and
chicken and mushroom pies for a bit of
easy nutrition.
Not only does the community and
charity benefit from you choosing to
go healthy but every purchase gives you

Stay Healthy this Winter
Of course it’s always better to
prevent ills and chills before
they get a chance to rear their
ugly head. But sometimes life
just seems to work against
you. It’s not always possible to
avoid the sickly coworker, that
person coughing constantly on
the bus, or maybe even sniffly
kids. If you or your family are
being besieged by immune
threats this winter, Hardy’s
can help.
How much are you drinking?
It’s fairly easy to remember to drink
lots of water in summer. The sun is
shining, you feel parched, and so you
want a drink of water. But by the time
winter comes around, people’s minds
are on hot chocolate, tea and coffee.
In short, we don’t feel as hot, and
we’re more prone to drinking caffeine,
which is dehydrating.
Unfortunately, this means that we
end up drinking far less water in
winter than we do in summer. Did
you know that even being fractionally
dehydrated can drastically reduce
metabolic efficiency? Your body
needs water, especially when it is
trying to fight something off.
If you’re feeling blocked up with
mucous, then drinking more water
might help. When the body produces
6
mucous, it absorbs a lot of the body’s
moisture. That’s right, not only is your
body now producing lots of horrid
mucous, it’s also slowly dehydrating
you. Drinking extra water can help
break up congestion by thinning out
all that nasty sticky stuff.
absorb the most sunlight, so if you
have darker skin then you may need
to spend a bit more time in the sun.
Those who work mostly indoors and
get little time in the sun are also at a
much higher risk of being vitamin D
deficient.
Go to bed
If the weather gods just won’t allow
you to get a decent amount of sun,
then consider taking a supplement
like Lifestream Vitamin D Spray.
Lifestream Spray is a non synthetic,
vegan friendly option that gives you
the optimal level of vitamin D3 in
every dose. It comes in coconut and
pineapple flavour, and is suitable for
the whole family.
Do you ever feel guilty about staying
at home in bed and not doing much
except resting? Lots of people feel
bad about taking time out to sleep,
even when they have come down
with a bug. There’s no reason to feel
guilty though! Sometimes it can be
your body’s way of telling you that
you need to slow down, take it easy,
and get a bit of rest. Sleep is a critical
part of repair as it boosts the immune
system and if you don’t get enough
sleep, then your immune system can
be compromised.
You’ve probably noticed the effects
of sleep when you feel sick. Often
when people go to sleep feeling sick,
they’ll wake up feeling a bit healthier.
The body has a wonderful ability
to heal itself, but it needs to have a
fighting chance.
Get some sun
Vitamin D also helps to boost the
efficiency of the immune system,
which in turn can help you fight off
bugs. Our bodies have the natural
ability to produce vitamin D when
we’re exposed to direct sunlight.
People with lighter skin tend to
An antioxidant angel
Andrographis is a tall, flowering plant
that has long been used in Chinese
medicine for its antioxidant immune
supporting properties. It is believed
that andrographis can support the
immune system and the body's
defences for respiratory health.
Andrographis can’t be found in your
local supermarket or any of the foods
that you eat. The only way to get it is
through supplements, like GO Healthy
Vir-Defence. Andrographis may be a
good option for anyone who needs to
strengthen their immune system, and
let the body heal.
Fight back with
vitamin C
Vitamin C is important for
maintaining bones, muscles,
and blood vessels, helping
the body absorb iron, and
strengthening the immune
system. Vitamin C has also
long been associated with
helping to support the
body’s defences, however
the latest research suggests
that vitamin C can at least
help support recovery from
ills and chills.
If this sounds like you, then try taking
one of these supplements to help:
•
Nutra-Life Ester C is a vitamin
C tablet that is easily absorbed
to provide immune support. It’s
gentle on the stomach because
it’s non acidic. Nutra-Life Ester C
may support the body’s defences
while also providing powerful
antioxidant activity.
•
GO Healthy Vir-Defence contains
elderberry, which is a type of wine
coloured berry that is packed
full of vitamin C. Elderberry is
worth trying when you’re sick
because not only does it contain
concentrated levels of vitamin C,
it also is an excellent source of
vitamins A and B.
•
Elderberry has been used in
medicine for centuries, from
Roman times to old colonial
America. It was strongly believed
that elderberry could help fight
ills and chills. There may be some
evidence to support this, since
elderberry can help to support
temperature balance.
Healing Herbals
The old olive leaf
Harker Herbals Ear Nose and Throat
Tonic is an elixir that contains ample
amounts of ozone, the atomic
quintessence of oxygen. This elixir
also contains other natural herbs,
like eucalyptus, peppermint, pine
and thyme.
Another powerful immune booster
is olive leaf extract. Olive leaf has
antioxidant and antiseptic properties,
the main one of these being the
phytochemical oleuropein. It has been
shown that olive leaf may support
the body’s defences against immune
threats. Not everyone lives on an olive
grove though, so it’s often best to
take a supplement.
This formulation is very popular with
both children and adults, as it can be
taken internally or externally, in order
to help support the immune system
and restore good health. Harker
Herbals Ear Nose and Throat Tonic
has antiseptic properties that may
provide respiratory support and assist
as a blood lymph purifier. Children
also love it because it helps to soothe
sore throats.
GO Vir-Defence, an exceptional winter
time companion, contains a high dose
of olive leaf extract.
Hardy’s Winter Support Pack

for getting well again have been combined into one helpful Hardy’s Winter

system and aid with quick recovery, thanks to ingredients like olive leaf,

WINTER
WELLNESS
FOR WEE ONES
Why is it that as soon as one kid at school is
sneezing, everyone seems to come down with a
horrid mystery illness, with raspy coughs, drippy
noses and sweaty foreheads? Suddenly your
mischievous little monkey isn’t running around
anymore; they’re tucked up in bed and in need of
looking after.
Having a sick child isn’t fun for anyone. Being sick,
and taking time off to look after your sick kids is
really not the best way to while away the winter
months. But don’t worry, your kids can avoid
getting grabbed by nasty bugs. If you want to
help your child avoid getting sick, then lay down
these simple rules:
Don’t touch your eyes or nose
This doesn’t sound too charming,
but at any given moment the human
hand is covered in thousands upon
thousands of germs. Imagine how
much dirtier they could get after a bit
of rough and tumble playtime!
It may be tempting for your kids to
rub their eyes and nose, but guess
where those germs will be going? Yes,
they’ll be going straight to the eyes
and nose (well, mucous membranes,
to be more precise). From there, the
germs are quickly absorbed into the
bloodstream, which will probably
mean you’ll end up with a sick child.
Do wash your hands
“Remember to wash your hands!”
is practically the catch cry of many
parents, and it’s good common sense,
especially during winter time. Teach
your children how to wash their hands
well, and often. It’s important that
they wash their hands well before and
after every meal, not just after using
the bathroom.
Of course, there will be times when
your kids are out in public, and won’t
be able to wash their hands properly.
This can be unfortunate since public
places can often be breeding grounds
for bad bacteria (think, for example, of
8
all of the nasty germs hanging around
on your shopping trolley). As a parent,
you might find it is worthwhile to
carry alcohol based wipes or gels for
sanitising little hands when out and
about.
Don’t go to school if you
feel sick
Not a lot of kids need encouragement
to stay home from school! It’s really
important, when your children are sick
that they take a bit of time out
to rest. Kids who are feeling sick need
to snuggle up warm and get a bit
of TLC from their mum and dad.
Remember big blankets, boxes
of tissues, heaps of hugs,
healthy food, and plenty of
sleep.
At
When they’re taking
time out at home, then
they probably won’t
need as much recovery
time as they would if
they struggled through
school. Plus, when they’re
at home they won’t be
passing their bugs onto
other kids.
Do drink lots
Getting sufficient fluids is important
for anyone fighting off an illness. If
your child tends to resist drinking
big glasses of water, then there are
other healthy ways for them to get
their fluids. A relaxing drink of ginger,
lemon and honey can work a treat.
Warm chicken soup is a much loved
soothing meal and will help to provide
lots of fluids too. You may also want
to try making homemade frozen
juice iceblocks, with bits of healthy
fruit inside.
VITAMIN
HELPERS
the end of the day
though, we all know that kids
will be…well, kids. There’s no
wrapping them up in cotton wool,
no matter how much you may
want to. So for some further
immune support for your kids
this winter, consider giving
them some vitamin
helpers.

Lifestream Vitamin D3 Spray
It may sound obvious, but if there’s one healthy thing your kids are
guaranteed not to get much of this winter, it’s sunshine. Yes, the
sun is sometimes feared because of the risks of overexposure, but a
healthy amount of sunlight is also necessary for the human body so
that it can produce important vitamin D.
Vitamin D is essential for competent immune system function,
healthy bones and teeth, blood sugar levels, and optimal function
of the nervous system. Try Lifestream Vitamin D3 Spray if you think
that your kids might need a little help getting some sun.

MEET THE EXPERTS
We talk to the Hardy's Experts about winter ills....
MAXINE SCOBLE
JULIE VAN VEEN
Manager

The Base,
Hamilton
What effect does a healthy diet
have on immune health? Can
you give us any tips on what
to include and avoid for better
immunity?
Diet can play a big role in your
immunity, especially if you are
eating foods you know you are
slightly intolerant to. Sugar feeds
bacteria, so lowering sugar in the
diet is a great start. Try to cut it out
completely when you feel illness
coming on.
Dairy is notorious for creating
mucous in the body, so avoid that
when you have an illness, or if you
experience asthma. They say eggs
and gluten
can be problematic as well.
For foods to boost immunity,
eat your colours! Dose up on
citrus, kiwifruit, carrots, spinach
and capsicum, which are all high
in vitamin C. Do not overlook
the humble homemade soup; a
warming, comforting brew with
concentrated nutrients.
Is there much difference in the
things children versus adults
need for optimum immune
health?
It’s the same remedies: probiotics,
olive leaf, vitamin C, however as
adults our stomachs can cope
with higher doses when we are
sick. Children often experience
symptoms worse, and they are
harder to get high doses of
treatment into, so it’s important to
focus on prevention for kids.
Adults tend to get less sunshine. A
lot of us are guilty of only seeing
the sun whilst walking from the
office to the car so, for adults, it’s
crucial to keep vitamin D levels up
during winter.

What lifestyle advice would
you suggest for people wanting
to improve their immunity?
What would be your top tips
for keeping kids healthy at
school at this time of the year?
Making a few changes to your
lifestyle can go a long way towards
improving immunity.
Probiotics are good and are
available in many forms; a
powder you can add to yoghurt,
or a delicious chewable tablet.
Probiotics are our first line of
defense, to protect us against
all sorts of bugs and are really
important to take after antibiotics
to help add the good stuff back
into your system. It can take a
month to reinstate the good bugs
after a course of antibiotics.
•
Reduce alcohol, as too much
depletes vitamins and weakens
your immunity
•
•
Exercise regularly
•
Enjoy 15 minutes of sunshine
everyday to get your daily dose
of vitamin D
•
Eat nutrient dense foods
such as wholegrains, fruit
and vegetables packed with
antioxidants and fibre
•
Avoid processed foods, as they
contain sugar, salt, hydrogenated
fats, chemicals and additives,
which have a negative effect on
immunity
•
Sleep well for 7 to 8 hours to
recharge your body and mind
Stay hydrated. Water
oxygenates the blood, ensuring
all your body’s systems get the
nutrients they need to function
properly
How does stress interact with
our immune system and how
can people best combat this?
Stress compromises our digestion
and weakens our body’s defences.
Ongoing stress can make us more
susceptible to getting a cold or flu
and slows recovery.
Ways to cope with life’s ups and
downs include exercise, yoga,
deep breathing and meditation.
There are also a range of
supplements to consider, including
probiotics, vitamin C, adaptogenic
herb astragalus, or a quality
multivitamin to combat stress and
support a strong, healthy immune
system. Also, try a smile to boost
your immune system naturally. It’s
free and highly contagious!
I use GO Vir-Defence for my
children, as I can open up a cap
and add 1/2 of the powder to juice
or yoghurt. Olive leaf is in those
capsules, which stimulates the
immune system, helping to fight
off bugs.
What are your ‘must have’
products in your own immune
boosting arsenal?
My must haves for boosting
the immune system would be
GO Vir-Defence, probiotics, a
good multivitamin with zinc and
chewable vitamin C tablets. Cell
salts are also very good to replace
the minerals that may be lacking in
children.
There’s a lot being said about
zinc. How does this help to
support our immune system?
Zinc is very important in the first
line of defence in our bodies.
Most of us get enough zinc from
our food, but if you are having
problems with the ability to smell,
your zinc may be low. My rule is
“if their feet stink, they can’t think,
they need zinc.” We can do a free
zinc taste test in store if you are
concerned.

YEAR ROUND HEALTH
with
Olive Leaves
Many people think that it’s the cold weather
that makes us more susceptible to ills and
chills, but that’s not actually the case. A
bigger issue is that during the colder weather
we’re more inclined to stay indoors, where it’s
warm and toasty.
Common sense strategies like practising good personal hygiene,
getting plenty of sleep, eating nutritious antioxidant-rich fruit
and vegetables, and making sure you exercise on a regular basis
are a great start.
Unfortunately, that means we’re in closer and more constant
proximity to other people. If someone around us gets sick, we’re
consequently more likely to catch their bugs.
These traditional practices appear to be supported by
laboratory studies in which the polyphenols found in olive leaves
have been shown to support the body’s immune defences to
fight invading organisms.
With their still-developing immune systems and tendency to
spend lots of time with others their own age, kids are more
susceptible than adults, and can average as many as ten bouts
of ills and chills a year. The adult immune system is more robust,
but nevertheless, adults can still average 2-4 bouts each year.
Our immune system works hard to identify constantly changing
immune threats and go to battle against them.
There are a number of measures you can take to support your
immune system and your body’s defences against winter bugs.

BEAT THE
Some people are able to embrace
winter for all its good bits…
the soups and scrummy hot
chocolates, long evenings by the
fire and the gumboot clad puddle
jumping excursions. For others
though winter can be, well, a
downer, leading to low energy,
low mood and low levels of
motivation. Whether you call it the
winter blues, or its more clinical
name, Seasonal Affective Disorder,
reality can feel a bit darker for
some over the cooler months.
Here we’ve compiled the Hardy’s
expert guide to beating the blues
during winter.
Stock up on sunshine
Otherwise known as the “sunshine
vitamin”, vitamin D levels can affect
people’s mood over winter. Because
our bodies get most of their vitamin D
from the sun, it’s easy to see that this
process might be compromised at this
time of the year, leading to lower levels
of vitamin D when daylight hours are
at their shortest.
Don’t forget fatty acids
A range of studies have found
that populations with higher fish
consumption report lower rates of
depression. More recently, a clinical
trial published in the Journal of
Nutrition Health and Ageing has found
further evidence for the effectiveness
of omega 3 supplementation in
alleviating depression symptoms.
In the body, essential fatty acids, like
omega 3, perform a wide range of
functions that are essential for good
health, including the production
of endocannabinoids, which affect
mood, behaviour and inflammation.
Because our body cannot synthesise
essential fatty acids, we must get
them from our food or in the form
of supplementation. The best source

All hail St John
St Johns Wort is a natural medicinal
herb that has been used by cultures
throughout the world for thousands
of years. Much more recently however,
a study published by the Centre for
Complementary Medicine in Munich
found St Johns Wort to be very
effective in treating depression.
Also known as Hypericum perforatum,
this clever little native European herb
with yellow flowers is thought to work
much like an SSRI, slowing the rate at
which the neurotransmitter, serotonin,
is removed from the brain. St Johns
Wort can be found in various herbal
teas and homeopathic remedies.
Get moving!
Exercise is another powerful way to
beat a case of the blues. Evidence
suggests that physical activity triggers
new cell growth in the brain, increases
mood enhancing neurotransmitters
and endorphins and reduces stress and
muscle tension. Whether a brisk walk
around the park, or something more
to stay active over the winter months.
We promise you, they are so much
fun that you won’t even think you’re
working out!

MANAGING
Menopause
Menopause. It’s a scary and
anxiety inducing word, even
though it’s part of a natural
process. The average age
for menopause is around 51,
but it occurs quite commonly
in women who are in their
early forties, right through
to women in their mid
to late fifties.
Most people are aware that during this
time a woman’s menstrual periods stop
permanently. What also happens though
is that the hormones that the ovaries
produce (oestrogen and progesterone)
begin to decline.
Periods can start and stop for a while,
so a woman is only considered to have
gone through menopause after she has
had one year without any periods.
The transitional time before a woman’s
last period is called perimenopause.
During perimenopause, the estrogen
and progesterone levels produced by
the ovaries will begin changing. It’s
these pesky hormone levels that cause
an array of irritating symptoms.
What are the symptoms
of menopause?
A lot of women fear going through
menopause because of the sort of body
changes that they have to deal with.
Typical features of menopause include
temperature imbalances, mood swings,
worry, irritability, sleep disruption, dry
skin, tissue weakness, cholesterol and
blood pressure fluctuations.
There are a number of factors that contribute
to the discomforts of menopause. These
include not just lowered oestrogen levels,
but also sluggish liver function, intestinal
bacterial imbalance, deficient diet, lack of
exercise, weight management problems,
stress and overwork and increased
requirements for essential nutrients.
14
What can you do?
The good news (or bad news,
depending on your lifestyle!) is
that the type and intensity of your
menopausal discomfort can be
managed through health, diet, energy,
and stress levels. It’s possible to create
some balance and lessen symptoms
of menopause by focusing on these
areas. A healthy diet and lifestyle can
also help to make your hormones
balance out better. You’d be surprised
how much these really can help.
Luckily, the adrenal glands and
fat cells in the body are busy at
work still producing oestrogen and
testosterone, although in smaller
amounts. This means that it’s also
important to help the adrenal glands
during this time, so that they can
keep up.
Herbs Help
A study published in The Obstetrician
and Gynecologist, conducted by
researchers from Brown University,
recommended herbal medicines for
women going through menopause.
They found that doctors often
recommended hormone replacement
therapy (HRT), but that wasn’t always
helpful. The women who were studied
found that herbal medicines taken as
either complementary or alternative
medicine, supported their response
to the discomforts of menopause.
Here are some
handy tips that
can help:
• Chuck the caffeine & alcohol
Caffeine may give you a
kickstart in the morning,
but it’ll give you a nasty kick
during menopause. Caffeine
and alcohol both contribute to
hot flushes, so it is best to cut
down on these. When you’re
feeling thirsty, reach for a glass
of water or a soothing herbal
tea instead.
• Eat fruit and sleep faster
A neat trick to help you sleep
better is to eat cherries,
bananas, grapes, or pineapple
before going to bed. They
all contain a brain relaxing
hormone that will help to hurry
sleep along. Getting lots of
sleep during menopause will
help your body regulate the
changes it’s going through.

Vitamin
C
and your health
Everyone knows that vitamin C is important for good health. Vitamin C is an antioxidant that
can help prevent oxidative stress caused by free radicals. That's fancy scientific talk to mean
that vitamin C can rid the body of damaging molecules that we pick up from our environment.
But do we realise just how good vitamin C can really be for our health?
Vitamin C in medicine
Treating diseases with vitamin C is
hardly unprecedented. Vitamin C was
used to treat scurvy in the eighteenth
century, when sailors were dying from
it in overwhelming numbers. Scurvy
is a horrible disease, with symptoms
of extreme weakness, lethargy, easy
bruising and bleeding. Scurvy is
virtually unheard of now though,
thanks in large part to the findings of
a Scottish ship surgeon called James
Lind. Lind discovered that when he
gave oranges and lemons (which are
rich in vitamin C) to his patients, they
were quickly cured.
Vitamin C used alongside
cancer treatments
Just as oranges and lemons must
have seemed like a strange cure back
then, it seems fairly odd that vitamin
C may be able to help cancer. But
results from clinical trials show this is
likely to be true.
The modern day version of giving
vitamin C is a bit more high tech
than handing out fruit though. High
doses of vitamin C are given through
intravenous infusion (IV) instead. This
allows much higher levels to enter the
blood than when it is taken orally. It is
these higher levels of vitamin C that
are thought to help cause the demise
of cancer cells.
Several studies of breast cancer
patients appear to show that vitamin
C helped them recover. It is believed
that vitamin C, when used with
chemotherapy and radiation, can help
breast cancer patients to develop
fewer side effects, and have an overall
better quality of life.1
In another study, also performed
by the National Cancer Institute in
the US, terminally ill cancer patients
were given high doses of vitamin
C. Although their cancer could not
be cured, the results suggested
16
that vitamin C might have helped
to improve their quality of life. It is
thought to have helped symptoms like
fatigue, nausea, vomiting, pain, and
loss of appetite.
Vitamin C loves your heart
A recent Danish study, recorded by
PubMed, concluded that people who
were deficient in vitamin C were at
greater risk of contracting some form
of heart disease. Vitamin C appears to
tackle your heart (in the best possible
way), playing a role in preventing the
delicate, inner endothelial lining of the
heart’s arteries from deteriorating. By
strengthening this little bit of lining, it
is believed that vascular dysfunction is
more likely to be avoided.
5 signs you may need vitamin C
You often feel low in energy.
Perhaps coffee is the only thing
getting you through the day? Vitamin
C may be able to help you feel stronger
and happier.
1
2 You’ve got bleeding gums and
loose teeth. When you’re low in
vitamin C, the collagen needed for
building and maintaining the tissue
in your mouth starts deteriorating…
yuck! The stuff of nightmares!
3 You bruised yourself a lot last
week, and it’s still not healing.
Bruises that occur easily, and that
stick around can sometimes be a clue
that your body needs more vitamin C.
Low levels of vitamin C can also make
it harder for wounds to heal.
If you have a tendency to catch
4 every winter ill or chill that comes
around, then you may need more
vitamin C to boost your immune system.
Many things can cause chronic
5 limb and joint pain, but people
who are dangerously low in vitamin C
may find that bleeding has occurred
within the joints. Ouch
5 foods full of vitamin C
In the nineteenth century, British
sailors often had lime juice added
to their diet. It is thought that this
gave rise to the less than kind
nickname ‘limey’. You don’t have
to turn into a ‘limey’ to get lots of
vitamin C though!
Here are five top foods that
are very high in vitamin C.

Yellow capsicums

Guavas

Kale

Kiwifruit

Broccoli
The future
for vitamin C
Currently, many healthcare
practitioners in America
give high doses of vitamin C
to patients with infections,
fatigue, and some types
of cancers. The results of
giving high dose vitamin
C to cancer patients have
been positive so far, so it will
remain to be seen in what
other ways this wonder
vitamin can help patients in
the future.

daily lives, so it’s frustrating when your eye health
begins to deteriorate.
You might not notice it straight away, but gradually
things become more blurry and harder to read.
Deteriorating eyesight is one of the most frequent complaints
of ageing, but there are some natural ways to support eye health.
Fight ultraviolet radiation
Brilliant bilberries
Go to ginkgo
Astaxanthin is a nutrient that’s thought
to be excellent for eye protection.
It’s believed to help reduce the harm
that’s caused by ultraviolet radiation.
Interestingly, astaxanthin may also
work as a kind of internal nutritional
sunscreen, insofar as that it could help
to boost your skin’s overall tolerance
to ultraviolet radiation.
In World War II, pilots who ate bilberry
jam discovered that their night vision
significantly improved. That’s because
bilberries have antioxidant properties
that are believed to help support
capillary health. These brilliant little
berries also contain flavonoids
called anthocyanosides, which in
turn regenerate rhodopsin, a purple
pigment in the eye that is responsible
for night vision. When combined with
vitamin E, some studies have shown
that bilberry extracts provide support
for healthy eyesight.
Ginkgo biloba comes from what
is thought to be one of the oldest
species of trees on earth, and has
been used for its medicinal properties
for thousands of years. Herbalists
will often use ginkgo to support
healthy blood circulation and blood
flow to the eyes, as well as to other
limbs. Gingko is also thought to help
protect nerve cells, both in the eyes
and throughout the body and its
powerful antioxidant properties can
defend cells against the damage of
oxidative stress.
Astaxanthin is not regularly found in
the eyes, so it’s important to take a
supplement, which are fairly new to the
market. Until recently you would have
had to have eaten schools of salmon to
meet your body’s astaxanthin needs!
Omega 3 fatty acids
Several studies have shown that
omega 3 fatty acids support healthy
vision and the warding off of dry eye
(which, exactly as the name suggests,
is a feeling of dryness or gritty
irritation in the eyes).
One such study by the National Eye
Institute in the States, which surveyed
a staggering 32,000 women, found
that women who ate at least two
servings of tuna every week had less
risk of developing dry eyes.
An essential duo: lutein
and zeaxanthin
Lutein and zeaxanthin are both
essential for good eye health,
playing important roles in vision
and eye pigmentation. A 15 year
study, conducted for the Nutrition
and Vision Project suggest that
consumption of lutein and zeaxanthin
may support visual performance,
reduce light sensitivity, and support
eye health.
So, how do you get more of these into your diet? It probably won’t surprise you
to learn that lutein can be found in carrots, following the old wives’ tale that
carrots will make your eyesight better. Spinach, kale, turnip greens, romaine
lettuce, zucchini, and peas are all great sources of lutein too. Zeaxanthin is
commonly found in goji berries, spirulina, saffron and paprika.
But beware! A considerable amount of lutein and zeaxanthin is lost during the
cooking process. If you think that you’re not getting enough nutrients out of
your diet, try Solgar Vision Guard, a nutritional supplement that is specifically
designed to support optimal eye health.

CONSTANTLY
COLD?
A LOOK AT HOW
TO KILL THE CHILL
There’s no doubt that it’s cold
outside and these are typically
the months where many of us can
feel a chill. However, for some, the
feeling of being cold is virtually
constant, even when we’re in warm
surroundings and when others
around us are warm.
If the cold constantly troubles you,
and you find it difficult to ever
truly warm up, read on… There are
a number of things that could be
contributing to you feeling cold,
and practical things that you can
do (beyond just another pair of
socks!) to help keep the chills away.
Ice block extremities
Cold hands and feet, despite the rest
of the body being warm, is common
and often a sign of poor circulation.
The blood circulation system is the
prime method of getting much
needed nutrients to the cells of the
body, however an unhealthy diet,
lack of exercise, high blood pressure,
high cholesterol and, for some, cold
conditions can constrict the blood
vessels and inhibit blood flow to
the areas of the body furthest from
the heart.
Healthy dietary changes, including
more fibre and increased water
intake can bring vast improvements
for the circulatory system, as can
exercise. Several herbs have also
been found to have a positive effect
on the circulation, including cayenne,
garlic, gingko biloba and ginger. The
amino acids and minerals in ginger
are thought to help make the blood
more fluid, naturally lowering blood
cholesterol levels and helping to
prevent clotting.
That pesky thyroid
For some people an underactive
thyroid, also called hypothyroidism,
attributes to constant feelings of
coldness. A common endocrine
disorder, hypothyroidism occurs when
the thyroid gland doesn’t produce
enough thyroid hormones.
Hypothyroidism can be a result of
not enough iodine in the diet, which
is important for normal thyroid
metabolism. It can also occur as
part of other autoimmune diseases,
for example type 1 diabetes, coeliac
disease or rheumatoid arthritis.
Cravings for bread, alcohol and sugar
can be an indicator of candidiasis, as
can recurring fungal infections or a
weakened immune system. To combat
it, and start eliminating its bacteria
overgrowth in the body, avoid sugary
foods and drinks and strip the diet
back to include lots of vegetables,
plenty of healthy fats (like fish oil and
coconut oil) and lots of water and
herbal teas. Barley grass has been
found to be beneficial, as have potent
antifungals like garlic, oil of oregano
and olive leaf extract.
A simple way to up your iodine levels
safely is with the addition of Celtic
salt into your diet. You may have seen

ALUMINIUM,
BEST AVOIDED
WHEREVER
POSSIBLE...
Everyone will have heard of aluminium. You may have come
across it in your old high school textbook when you had to memorise the
periodic table (it comes between magnesium and silicon, if you’re trying to remember!)
Aluminium is a common, silver coloured chemical element that is used in lots of everyday
products and manufacturers value it for its light, non magnetic and non sparkling properties.
What you might not realise is that
even though it is found pretty
commonly in everyday substances,
it is still best to avoid aluminium
where possible. That’s because, so
far, research has found a possible link
between aluminium and breast cancer.
A study published in the Journal of
Inorganic Biochemistry in July 2013
found that patients who had contracted
breast cancer had significantly higher
levels of aluminium in their nipple
aspirate fluids, when compared to a
control group. These results support
the findings of an earlier 2011 study that
was published in the Journal of Applied
Toxicology. The 2011 study similarly
found higher levels of aluminium in the
nipple aspirate fluids of breast cancer
patients. Further evidence suggests
that aluminium may also increase the
spread of breast cancer cells.
There has also been a little research
done into the link between aluminium
and Alzheimers. Initial research to
date suggests that people who have
high levels of aluminium in their
bodies may be more likely to develop
Alzheimers. More research still needs
to be done in this area though, and
it is unclear how aluminium might
contribute to causing Alzheimers.
How to
There are some
simple lifestyle
changes that you
can make for
yourself and
your family that
will decrease
the amount of
aluminium that you
come into contact
with. Even a small
change can make a
big difference.
Avoid using
aluminium pans
when you are
cooking. Food
that is cooked in
aluminium pans
could potentially
be harmful, so be mindful to go for an
aluminium free pan the next time you
buy kitchenware.
Don’t be sweaty,
be natural
Aluminium is, unfortunately,
easily absorbed through the
skin, which means that having
a regular deodorant made
with aluminium isn’t ideal. But
of course no woman wants to
be seen as sweaty. After all, as
they say, women don’t sweat;
they glow. Giving up deodorant
altogether doesn’t have to be
your only option if you want to
stay fresh and avoid aluminium.
Hardy’s stock a great range
of aluminum free deodorants.
They come in a range of natural
smelling fragrances, and it is
an easy first step to get rid of
some of the aluminium in your
life. There are deodorants for
the whole family too, not just
the ladies, so ask one of our
experts in store.

Motivating
winter workouts
Winter is here with its chill
factor, shorter days and
general temptation to stay
under the duvet. However, if
you want to escape the cooler
seasons without acquiring
an extra layer of winter coat,
you’ll know it’s important to
keep active.
Indoor sports
Skate the winter away
Whether you’re into soccer, netball,
basketball or cricket, indoor sports
are the ideal solution to keep you
active throughout the colder months
without having to brave the elements
outside. Being part of a team is, in
itself, motivating so head along to
your local YMCA or indoor sport
complex and see what’s on offer.
If you know that your
motivation wanes over the
cooler months, winter is
a good time to seek out a
personal trainer to keep you
focused. Gyms are decked
out with all the equipment
you need to stay on track,
while indoors, and a personal
trainer can help to tailor a
programme to your individual
goals.
Bikram yoga
For some exercise that is so fun you
won’t even know you’re working out,
head to your local ice skating rink. A
great workout for your legs, bum and
core, ice skating can be done with
friends, your family, or on your own
and only an hour on the ice is bound
to have you feeling the burn. Look for
classes, or a special discount night at
your local rink if you really want to get
into it.
However, if the gym is simply
not your thing, fret not! We’ve
compiled our favourite ideas
for staying hot when it’s cold
outside. You won’t want to
hibernate with these fun
winter activities to keep you
fit and feeling fabulous…
24
One way to combat the cold outside,
is to get really warm inside… And
bikram yoga enables you to do just
that. A type of yoga that is practiced
in a room heated to 40 degrees,
bikram yoga is nothing if not toasty!
It’s a hard workout that’s guaranteed
to make you sweat, but many swear
by it as part of their routine for
looking and feeling great.
If standard room temperature yoga
is more your thing, there are lots of
options of classes for this too. Or, find
a dvd and host your own yoga party
in the lounge. Leg warmers optional,
but recommended!
Hit the slopes
Rug up and get a blast of fresh air at
any one of our gorgeous country’s
skiing and snowboarding destinations.
You don’t need a season pass, or to
be an accomplished skier to have a
fabulous day on the slopes. It’s winter
fitness (and fun!) for the whole family.
Winter walks
It can be hard to get going, but
there’s not much more invigorating
than a brisk winter walk. Bush walks
are particularly magical at this time
of the year and you will find you are
sheltered from rain in some spots.
Otherwise don your gumboots, grab
the brolly and hit one of your local
parks to blow the cobwebs out.
Climbing or combat
Channel your inner child and take the
family to your local laser tag complex.
Nothing gets the heart pumping
like running around in the near
darkness with people shooting at you.
Alternatively, find your nearest indoor
rock climbing complex and harness
up! It may not feel like exercise, but
your arm muscles and heart rate will
definitely feel like they’ve been doing
something!

How about 10+ a day?
A 12 year University College London
study has found that eating more than
the recommended five servings of
fruit and vegetables a day can lead to
a longer and healthier life. The current
5+ a day campaign was launched in
New Zealand in 1994 by not for profit
organisation, United Fresh NZ, however
a study has claimed that only 30% of
people manage to eat that amount.
The research also found that
vegetables were four times healthier
than fruit and that fruit juice had no
significant benefit. This finding follows
the assertion in the New Zealand
Medical Journal that a 20% tax on
sugary drinks would prevent 67 deaths
from cardiovascular disease, diabetes
and diet related cancers a year.
So, how do we get more servings into
our daily diet?
• Invest in a juicer and make fresh, raw
vege juices. One favourite is carrot,
beetroot and a tiny bit of ginger
• Snack on carrot and celery sticks
with hummus. String beans and
cucumber slices are tasty for dipping
• Pack soups and casseroles with lots
of veges. Slow cook with the meat
to increase overall rich flavours
• Sneak veges into breakfast with
the addition of spinach, peppers or
mushrooms to your scrambled eggs
