JOB OPENING - Covenant Presbyterian Church

JOB OPENING - Covenant Presbyterian Church
INTRODUCTION
Dear friends:
Thank you for the privilege
of taking a sabbatical this
summer. By the time you
read this, I hope I am well into
stage one of my time away
which will include some time
in solitude, praying, exercising,
and exploring God’s beauty in
exquisite landscapes. In fact,
I’ll be reading “The Solace of Fierce Landscapes” by
Belden C. Lane. I invite you to read it with me.
In addition to this time of solitude, I plan to engage in a
number of spiritual practices and invite you to join me.
Here they are:
1. Worship. I look forward to visiting other churches,
listening to sermons, singing hymns, and not worrying
one little bit about the lights, the sound-system, the
ushers, or the time. I plan to embrace the privilege of
entering sacred space and hope you can do the same.
2. Learning. I look forward to reading Robert Putnam’s
“Amazing Grace: How Religion Divides and Unites Us.”
It’s a serious work, but if you would enjoy digging in a
bit, I’d enjoy hearing what you think about it. I also look
forward to learning about early Christianity while in
Rome, the spirituality of simplicity while in Assisi, and
21st Century competencies while in Chatauqua.
3. Exercise. I’ve long believed in the spirituality of our
physicality, but the aging process requires adaptation
and old habits don’t always serve the present very
well. I hope to spend some time re-calibrating diet,
exercise, and a more reasonable way of approaching
this stage of life.
4. Family and friends. The press of two professional
lives can wreak havoc on the health of friendships
and pinch out any relaxed time with close family and
friends. Suzanne and I look forward to lingering a little
longer at the table with friends and others we love.
Perhaps you could do the same this summer.
I’m more grateful than you may know for this
opportunity, and I’m already looking forward to our
return in 10 weeks and sharing the next chapter of our
life together.
With prayers and gratitude,
Bob Henderson, senior minister

SUMMER INTERNS
Welcome Stapleton/Davidson Interns
People in Mission Scholars
Each summer, Covenant offers the “People in Mission
Scholars” Internship to Covenant College Students.
This summer opportunity gives college students the
chance to work in a Charlotte nonprofit for 35 hours a
week. Along with their fellow interns, they explore and
process issues of poverty, hunger and homelessness in
our own community with Covenant mission staff
members. Interns contribute the valuable resources of
time, talent and passion throughout the summer, and
find their own lives changed by the people they meet
and the work they do. This year we are proud to announce five outstanding interns and tell you where they
will be spending their summer:
L-R: Julia Burkley, Kate Meeks, Philip Bader. Katie Farrey, Ela Hefler
Celebrating its 26th year, and touching the lives of
over 110 Davidson College students, the Stapleton/
Davidson Urban Service Internship will bring five new
students into our community to partner with our local
nonprofits. Partnering with First Presbyterian, students
are graciously hosted by church families. These
students share with “their families” the remarkable
people they meet, the challenges of their faith, and
both the hard and beautiful realities they encounter
meeting people in our community that lead lives very
different from their own. They spend 3-4 hours each
week with church staff or the chaplain from Davidson,
reflecting on Luke and readings that challenge their
understanding of the poor.
Morgan Ferrone will be working at Urban Ministry
Center.
Alex Garcia will be working at Crisis Assistance Ministry
and Center for Community Transitions.
Abbey Rogers will be working at Crisis Assistance
Ministry.
Bishop Saunders will be working with the HousingWorks Scattered Site Programs
Genny Ward will be working with Friendship Trays and
The Salvation Army Center of Hope.
This year we welcome:
Julia Burkley, a rising sophomore from New York, who
is working at Dove’s Nest and living with Kevin and
Tricia Smith.
Katie Farray, a rising senior from Florida, working at
Moore Place and living with Ann and Blaine Sanders.
Philip Bader, a rising junior from Virginia, who is working at the Men’s Shelter of Charlotte and the Charlotte
Rescue Mission.
Kate Meeks, a rising junior from Virginia, who is working at The Urban Ministry Center.
Ela Hefler, a rising junior from Canada, who is working
at Urban with the Outreach and Engagement Team.

OUTREACH
THINK LOCAL
As Christians, we are called to meet the
world’s greatest needs with compassion,
justice and kindness. By stepping into a
leadership position with Local Outreach, we
can continue to grow and improve our service
to our neighbors. There are a variety of ways
to serve. One opportunity available is to be
a monthly coordinator for Room in the Inn;
your organizational skills could ensure that
over 50 people do not sleep outside in the
cold winter months. Another opportunity
is with the Local Outreach Committee; your
vision could contribute to ending
homelessness and hunger in Charlotte.
Another is helping lead portions of Freedom
School; your love of kids could change a
child’s life.
Covenant members of all ages went to Sharon Towers in May to
participate in Operation Sandwich.
SERVICE SPOTLIGHT
Hope Team Volunteer
By Judy Grubbs
I am amazed to realize that we have
been members of Covenant for 40
years! We moved to Charlotte and
found a home in this warm and
wonderful congregation. In so many
ways, we are blessed to be part of this
community of faith and action. One of
the biggest blessings was discovering
a service opportunity that transformed
my life – namely, I got asked to be on a
Charlotte Family Housing “Hope Team.”
Covenant partners with Charlotte
Family Housing (CFH) to provide
volunteer “Hope Teams” consisting
of 3-6 people interested in long-term
engagement with a family moving
from homelessness to housing. Each
team is matched with one family to
provide support and encouragement
to the family as they move from
homelessness by building relationships
with their family, with guidance from
CFH personnel. Mary Wood Stallings,
Kay Tawney, Brad Gritter, and I have
become extended family to a wonderful
mother and her two children. We have
shared meals together, cried together,
faced life challenges together and have
become more of who God created us
6
to be through this experience. I am so
glad that somebody asked me to be a
Hope Team member, and so now I ask
you. We are forming another Hope
Team to surround a mother and her
young child. Will you step into this
amazing opportunity?
IN CHRIST SUPPORTING
MINISTRIES
We hope that you might embrace
this opportunity. But, if this isn’t the
time for a long-term commitment,
there are opportunities for short-term
contributions of time and expertise. As
families transition from homelessness,
they need volunteers who have
specialized skills, such as an attorney
to write a will or review a contract; a
financial professional to advise about
budgeting; a real estate expert for
guidance related to housing; a career
counselor or HR professional to help
with resumes and interviewing skills; a
tutor to demystify fifth-grade math; or
a friend to keep a child on a snow day. A
list of “experts on call” would be such a
valuable asset to our Hope Teams.
Well Gatherings are monthly
meetings for caregivers,
family members, and church
leaders who provide care
and advocacy for individuals
navigating mental illness.

OUTREACH
FAITH & SERVICE
Reynosa, March 2015
By Jerry Jernigan
The model for the March trip included a month of education
and team building before the 15 group members left for
Mexico. We learned about border life and politics from a
UNCC professor; heard stories from three mothers of life
south of the Mexican border and about their lives here; and
read selected writings by Pico Iyer, Barbara Brown Taylor,
Anne Lamott, Sonia Nazario, Frederick Buechner, Gregory
Boyle.
Perhaps most powerful of all, we gathered for a half day
retreat out of town where we shared with one another
our faith stories. That candid sharing of our fragile natures
pulled us tightly together as a community and that, in turn,
drew us closer during our pre-trip meetings and deeply
enriched our experience in Reynosa. As one member said:
“Focusing on stories and really listening to each other
and to people with whom we served helped us relate
and experience the trip more richly than we might have
otherwise.”
A couple of years ago the Session, through the Planning
& Evaluation Board, established the Faith & Service Task
Force. Its purpose, as reported to Session on November 11,
2013, was to:
Create a sustainable, ongoing and accessible model
for integrating Christian education and mission that
strengthens people’s connections between faith and
service through intentional cycles of learning, serving,
reflecting and sharing.
Another way to state this purpose may be in the form
of a question. In performing Covenant’s service work -whatever the service may be -- how can we ensure not
only that the recipients of that work are benefited, but also
that those who perform the work are given opportunities
to strengthen their faith and deepen their relationship with
God?
The original task force members created a model to use
but they did not have an opportunity to try it out. Last
year, new members of the task force were appointed and
were asked to use the model in connection with both
Covenant’s Room in the Inn and in planning and carrying out
the mission trip to Reynosa. Both efforts were successful
and useful information was learned in each endeavor. This
report, though, will focus only on the Reynosa trip made in
March 2015.
As is customary on such trips, each member was assigned
to a team in charge of daily devotions. Topics were
surrender, silence, grace, love, hope and transformation.
Each member received a booklet which contained brief
writings from the Bible and various authors related to each
daily devotional topic.
Each group member was matched with a prayer partner.
Our partners joined us in some of our pre-trip gatherings,
prayed for us while we were away and shared with us
in a post trip supper when we gathered to reflect on
the experiences we had lived. We found that our prayer
partners kept us tethered to the Covenant community
which greatly enriched our experience.
All group members felt deeply grateful to have been part
of this outreach. The needs in Reynosa continue to be
great and immediate. The assistance Covenant provides,
through Faith Ministries, is greatly appreciated. It is hoped,
too, that our Mexican sisters and brothers felt what we felt
in working with them: that it is not “us helping them” but,
rather, God’s children working together.
The task force expects to make a report later in the year
with a recommended model that can become a tool
available for use by all in connection with any Covenant
service endeavor.it hopes, will become a tool available
for use by all in connection with any Covenant service
endeavor.

RECREATION & WELLNESS
FROM THE PARISH NURSE
Dear Ones,
I would like to thank each and every
person who gave blood or supported
the blood drive on May 3rd in any way.
We exceeded our goal by nine extra
pints! It was a very proud moment to
be able to report that to the Red Cross!
We helped save as many as 102 lives!
That’s just amazing. Our next drive will
be on Sunday, Aug. 16, so mark your
calendar and consider donating.
As we head into the slower pace of summer (at least we all
hope it’s slower), here are a few suggestions for what to do
with all that extra daylight.
1. Eat berries. Blueberries, strawberries, raspberries are all
very good for you as they are full of antioxidants and fiber.
2. Plant something. Whether a garden or just a flower in a
pot, getting your hands in the dirt reduces stress.
3. Go outside. Get some fresh air and exercise and bond with
others who are doing the same.
4. Wear sunglasses and sunscreen. You can help prevent
skin cancer, cataracts and wrinkles!
5. Vacation. Take advantage of the opportunity to disconnect
from the business and busy-ness of every day and slow
down for a while.
Be safe and healthy. Have a wonderful summer of 2015.
Take care,
Mary Mattiacci, RN
