COMMUNITY BUILDERS WARNER BROS. STUDIO FACILITIES
A Letter From... LISA RAWLINS HELLO, BURBANK! It’s the beginning of a new school year, and I want to call attention to Burbank’s public schools and how they provide a strong foundation for the community our studio calls home. Warner Bros. is proud to partner with local schools and has seen the benefits that come from community support. Arts programs across the district are stronger because of community funding and the Arts for All Program. Booster clubs on local campuses are flourishing because of new leadership provided through the Burbank Schools Boosters Association. Muir Middle School recently formed the Muir Booster Association, the first school-wide support organization on a middle school campus, and they recognize the importance of pulling in the whole community – parents, neighbors, and local businesses – all of whom benefit from school improvements, like the current auditorium renovation project. Our studio challenged them to raise $10,000 in 60 days and we would match it. And they did it! Other schools, like Roosevelt Elementary, are also successful in securing the support of the broader community in meeting their school’s goals. Burbank has a rich, deep generational connection to their schools and their students. It’s everyone’s responsibility to support Burbank schools – so even if you don’t have a school-aged child, I encourage you to go to a play or concert at your local school, attend a ball game, or find a way to volunteer. Supporting the efforts of boosters, PTAs, and other fundraisers is crucial to keeping our schools strong! As always, we look forward to continuing to engage with you, our Burbank neighbors, and welcome any feedback on how we can continue to grow our relationship with you. Entertainment WARNER BROS. STUDIO FACILITIES COMMUNITY BUILDERS Continuing its history of helping local nonprofit and community-based organizations in the Burbank area, Warner Bros. Studio Facilities (WBSF) announced the Community Builders program in early 2014. The program was designed to utilize the capabilities of WBSF’s craftspeople - such as renovation, build-out, redesign, and gardening - to benefit local schools and nonprofits by rehabilitating a space that is in need of help. WBSF announced that it would select two organizations and would work with them to renovate a space. The group released a call for proposals and received numerous submissions from both local schools and nonprofits. The two organizations selected were John Burroughs High School and the Kids’ Community Dental Clinic. “While our presence continues to grow around the world, the tight-knit Burbank community is our home, and giving back to our neighbors is a priority for us at Warner Bros.,” said Norm Barnett, SVP, Production Services, Warner Bros. Studio Facilities, and alumnus of John Burroughs High School. “The Studio Facilities group has had incredible experiences with our local partnerships in recent years, and we’re excited to have our Community Builders contribute to two more fantastic Burbank organizations.” At John Burroughs High School, the Community Builders will renovate a classroom in order to maximize instruction and learning opportunities for the school’s performing arts programs. Over at the Kids’ Community Dental Clinic, the WBSF Community Builders will transform a side yard with kid-friendly landscaping, making it more inviting to the clinic’s young patients. Stay tuned for photos of the completed projects. WARNER BROS. STUDIOS BURBANK COMMUNITY NEWSLETTER FALL 2014 IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD ON THE LOT THE RANCH BATMAN EXHIBITS Located just a half-mile up Hollywood Way from the main lot, Warner Bros.’ Ranch facility houses some of the most recognizable exterior sets in entertainment – everything from “Lethal Weapon” and “National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation” to “The Waltons” and “Friends” have utilized its suburban landscape and five soundstages. While the facility continues to serve the robust film and TV industry – ABC’s comedy “The Middle” is currently shooting its sixth season there – the Ranch is exploring newer terrain as well. With the recent addition of Warner Bros. Post Production’s new Virtual Production Stage to the Ranch, the studio entered into a new realm of storytelling and became the only full-service virtual production studio in the world. Along with partner Giant Studios, the Ranch’s new space offers the full-service virtual production package – including motion capture and performance capture – and post production services, giving Warner Bros. a competitive edge in the emerging video game field. To celebrate the 75th anniversary of DC Comics’ iconic super hero Batman, the Warner Bros. Studio VIP Tour is featuring two special Batman exhibits with unprecedented displays of collections from all seven films. For a limited time this year, tour guests may look deep into the Batcave to see the most popular costumes, gadgetry, and vehicles. Six Batsuits will be on display in the Warner Bros. Museum including the original version worn by Michael Keaton in “Batman” and Christian Bale’s final costume from “The Dark Knight Rises,” as well as a wide range of authentic costumes from characters such as Poison Ivy, The Riddler, Mr. Freeze, and Catwoman. And over at the Warner Bros. Picture Car Vault, a selection of the Dark Knight’s favorite vehicles will be showcased – with the Bathammer, BatPod, and Tumbler taking center stage. A limited number of specially themed Batman carts will be available throughout the day, ready to escort film fans around the studio lot. SUSTAINABILITY ENCORE! DONATION DAY Warner Bros.’ material reuse program, Encore!, has provided valuable materials to local communities where we live and work since 1995. Each year, the studio partners with local schools and nonprofits to donate materials left over from film and TV productions, ranging from furniture and electronics to clothing, lumber, and food. In late February, the Warner Bros. Office Services team held the studio’s first onsite donation event, inviting Burbank community partners to bring their trucks and load up as many items as needed from the office services warehouse. The day began with 275 items available for donation. By 1:00 p.m., Warner Bros.’ local community partners were able to take 188 pieces of furniture back to their facilities to help outfit classrooms, lobbies, offices and reading rooms.
