PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
2014 was an enormously successful year for furthering the mission of the Mohawk
Hudson Land Conservancy. Our board, advisory council, staff, volunteers,
members and partners all provided generous support allowing us to grow rapidly.
We connected with more people, protected more land, increased our organizational
capabilities, and enhanced the health of our communities.
Thanks in large part to increased contributions and two matching dollar challenges
that we surpassed, we raised more money than ever before. A MHLC conservation
fund was established at the Community Foundation. Outreach connected us with
thousands of people with an interest in conservation and our six Conservation
Conversation gatherings in the homes of supporters introduced the Conservancy
and our work to new friends.
Easements and acquisitions increased protected land in strategic areas of the
Helderbergs - Rensselaerville, Altamont and Berne. These conservation efforts were
accomplished with the help of many partners and donors including the Open Space
Institute, The Land Trust Alliance, The Nature Conservancy, Albany County, and the
Town of Berne. We continue to build and cultivate relationships and partnerships to
ensure our preservation activities reflect community priorities and values.
Thanks to our successful fundraising efforts and a Land Trust Alliance grant, we were
able to add conservation and program staff allowing the current staff to enhance work
on fundraising, outreach and land protection while moving our mission forward.
Communities
I ask that you reflect on these words of Rachael Carson, “One way to open your eyes is
to ask yourself, what if I have never seen this before? What if I knew I would never see
it again?” Her thoughts capture the reason MHLC and its partners work to preserve
lands and connect communities with them. There is much work remaining and we
look forward to new challenges and successes.
Lisa Evans, President, MHLC Board of Directors
My son and I have a vision of a future in which
there could be a hiking and cross country skiing trail
going for a few miles along the base of the talus slope
of the escarpment among the trees and meadows
and beaver ponds. The beauty of the land should be
available to everyone, not just landowners. Working
with MHLC makes me feel like our dream
might come true someday! “

• Craven Easement | 87 acres | New Scotland
This conservation easement protects picturesque land located beneath the
Helderberg Escarpment and is an important step in protecting a vital
migratory corridor and habitat.

2014 was a very successful year for the Albany
County Helderberg Hudson Rail Trail. A new
section of the trail was opened in the Towns of
New Scotland and Bethlehem, Albany County
completed surface work on the rail trail starting
at Upper Font Grove Rd., and the County
planned construction and paving of the trail
from the South Pearl St. terminus in Albany to
across the Delaware Avenue bridge. By the fall
of 2015, this section of trail should be completed
and open to the public.
Community Mural
Construction on the trail and
adjacent sewer lines.
As part of our 2014 Summer Solstice Celebration,
Community Mural created
artist, MHLC Board member, and FORT
at the 2014 Summer Solstice
member Ellie Prakken painted a beautiful image Celebration
of the Albany County Helderberg Hudson Rail
Trail complete with walkers, bikers and furry
friends. The mural was conceived as a community
art project illustrating the community connections
created by the rail trail. At the Summer Solstice
Celebration leaves and markers were provided
and Solstice attendees of all ages were invited to
add their creative mark to the mural. Each leaf
was secured, making the mural a one-of-a-kind
community artwork. Following the celebration,
the mural began a year-long tour across the
Capital Region.
“
The environment, after all, is where we
all meet, where we all have a mutual
interest. It is the one thing that all of us
share. It is not only a mirror of ourselves,
but a focusing lens on what we can become.

Highlights
Guests enjoy a tour of the Becker
property at a press event.
MHLC preserves
recorded over 2,500 visits
in 2014!
As for our furry friends,
more than 117 visits were
made by dogs.
Steve and Ben Bratspis enjoying
nature near Wolf Hollow.
Thanks to our
incredible volunteers,
MHLC preserves received
regular maintenance,
received structural
improvements, hosted
two eagle scout projects
and saw new trails built!
New trail in the Bozen Kill Preserve
“The first MHLC newsletter of 2012 included
a call for new Preserve Stewards. Little did
I realize that attending the initial interest
meeting would have such a profound impact
on my life! Although I had always enjoyed
hiking and the outdoors, I didn’t anticipate
just how much pleasure and fulfillment
would come to me as a result of shaping
and maintaining beautiful places. It quickly
became a passion and has taken a major role
in the course of my life, to the extent that no
week is complete if I haven’t gotten out to hike
and/or work on a MHLC preserve.”

“My heart and efforts are focused on the Save the Bozen Kill
project. The recent acquiring of the Becker property is just one
piece of a bigger project. Now that we understand much better
how ecosystems work, we know that owning a single piece of land
within an ecosystem, no matter how beautiful in and of itself that
land is, it is not enough to safeguard the ecosystem. MHLC is
indeed advancing step-by-step but a long line of acquisitions are
still necessary if the entire Bozen Kill is to be preserved.
If you wish to invest energy or funds, MHLC is only a few steps
away to allowing you to make a difference for those living right
here and now in your own community, and equally for the generations to come. Let’s join forces with the dedicated people at MHLC
to do so.”
