Ragwort prevention
Common ragwort contains toxins which can have disastrous
consequences if eaten by horses or other grazing animals. Sheep have to
ingest 2-3 times their bodyweight to ingest a lethal dose but horses only
need to ingest 4-8% of their bodyweight for it to be fatal. Cattle are
more susceptible than sheep. If consumed (either growing or dried) the
animals liver cannot remove the ragwort alkaloids, resulting in damaged
liver cells which over time means the liver cannot function properly.
Rag fork Designed specifically to remove ragwort and other paddock
weeds quickly and easily. By removing the whole plant
including the roots this reduces the possibility of re-growth.

This can be sprayed directly onto ragwort and throughout
the year. It is recommended grazing animals are kept away
from treated areas for 2 weeks or until the ragwort is

Key facts to be aware of with Sweet Itch:
▲ S
weet Itch can also be referred to as Summer Seasonal Recurrent Dermatitis.
▲ It’s a hypersensitive allergic reaction to the saliva of the Culicoides midge and
flies from the genus simulim.
▲ Itching mainly occurs around the mane and tail. In extreme cases causing the
horse to rub their mane or tail bald.
What can you do to help protect your horse?
Make their blood less appealing by supplementing their diet with
garlic granules or Apple Cider Vinegar or use fly sprays to attempt to
deter the flies/midges.

Killitch is an AVM-GSL (Authorised Veterinary Medicine- General Sales List) interacts with the
nervous system of the midge, thus killing them before they bite. Further to this, Killitch provides
immediate relief to those already suffering from sweet itch. Treatment- Apply to all affected
areas by rubbing in with fingers (or soft cloth) as soon as the problem occurs and for the

Z-Itch is an AVM-GSL ready to use, pour on solution which is to be applied to the mane and rump

Coopers Fly Repellent Plus is an AVM-GSL ready to use application to repel and kill biting insects
and flies on horses (includes biting louse). No dilution is necessary. Apply shortly before working the
horse so when flies are troublesome. Pour the product onto a sponge and spread lightly around the

Agricultural
Blowfly
Blowfly is the main external parasite affecting sheep anytime
between April and October but is more likely to occur in
warmer, humid weather.
Flies are attracted to sheep by the odours of excessive
“sweating” and urine and/or faeces contamination. Fly strike
can occur anywhere over the loins, shoulders, flanks, neck,
back, throat, bottom or abdomen. If left untreated, fly strike
can be fatal.
Indications of a fly strike include foot stamping, vigorous
shaking, gnawing or rubbing of the tail and bottom. There
is a distinctive smell and the wool becomes matted and
discoloured.
Prevention
Routine crutching and dagging will reduce the risk of strike if
started in April and repeated every four to six weeks.
Complete shearing can temporarily reduce the risk of strike,
but this risk rapidly increases as the fleece grows. Ewes can
become flyblown even after shearing.
Prevention is the best form of control. Strike can be prevented
using pour-ons containing the insect growth regulators CLiK®
and CLiKZiN®. However these products will not treat existing
strike (maggots). Crovect Pour On will prevent strike and also
kill maggots.
