The deed bears the date of 1796 and for 140 acres. The land was sold later at a Sheriff’s sale and William Root of New York received the highest bid and the land was his. Then, he sold his interest in the land to Lazarus Hammond for ten dollars (lawful money of New York). The surrounding hills began populating with a few families here and there. Glenn Curtiss, who was born here, opened his own bicycle shop. He not only proved to the world his confidence in man’s master of the air with his kite-like plane (the June-Bug), but, also, was successful in building and riding motorcycles. In the year 1829, the Reverend Bostwick planted the first cuttings of grapes in this area - Catawba and Isabella. By using these grapes in his garden it is believed that he, possibly, was the maker of the first wines produced in the Finger Lakes area. 2011 SOUTHERN TIER SHOPPER SUMMER GUIDE 2011 9 10 2011 SOUTHERN TIER SHOPPER SUMMER GUIDE 2011 HARDWARE, PLUMBING, HEATING & ELECTRICAL SUPPLIES .. . CURTISS MUSEUM 2011 SOUTHERN TIER SHOPPER SUMMER GUIDE 2011 photo by Bonnie Colado Located on State Route 54, one half mile south of the village of Hammondsport, New York, this unique museum, bearing the name of Hammondsport’s favorite son, contains a priceless collection, dedicated to memory of aviation pioneer, Glenn Hammond Curtiss. Open year around, the museum also features a 75-seat theater, a research library, a gift shop, and a restoration shop. Also provided, in addition to parking space for cars, is adequate parking for larger vehicles such as motor homes and coaches. Originally incorporated in 1961, the Glenn H. Curtiss Museum of Local History was located for 33 years at Hammondsport in a former school building. In 1992, the museum moved to its current location along Route 54 and is extremely easy to find - thanks to a rather large WWII transport aircraft parked out front. Unlike the former building which consisted of three stories, the new location has all exhibits located on the ground floor, and is fully handicapped accessible. Prior to beginning their self-guided tour, visitors are encouraged to start their visit by watching a 14 minute introductory video on the life of Glenn Curtiss. For those who possess a heightened degree of interest, a “Random Access Audio Tour” is available for a small additional fee. Tour Guides may also be provided for groups, at no additional cost, by prior request (call ahead to reserve a tour guide). Glenn Curtiss began his career as a builder of bicycles and then, motorcycles. In 1907 he became the “Fastest Man on Earth” when he attained a speed of 136.4 MPH on his V8 powered motorcycle. An exact reproduction of this bike is one of several Curtiss motorcycles that are on display. On July 4th, 1908, Curtiss gained national prominence of a different kind when he flew his flying machine, named the “June Bug”, a distance of over 5000’ to win the Scientific American Trophy. This was the first pre-announced, public flight in America. This feat, combined with others, was to earn him U.S. Pilots License # 1. A full-sized reproduction of this airplane is one of several historic aircraft that are on display. Glenn Curtiss won world recognition as an aircraft builder and pilot in 1909 when he won the Gordon Bennett Trophy at the First International Aviation Meet held in Rheims, France. He achieved this at the breath-taking speed of 46.5 MPH (he went 90 MPH faster on a motorcycle two years earlier). Back in the states, a year later, Curtiss again increased his stature as a pioneer aviator by making the first long distance flight in America, between two cities. He flew from Albany to New York City, with one stop, for a total distance of 150 miles to win a $10,000 prize and the Scientific American Trophy (again). In 1911 he mastered the technology associated with taking off and landing an aircraft on water, thereby making the “seaplane” and later, the “flying boat”, a practical reality. Seaplane development led Curtiss to an association with the U.S. Navy that began when he trained their first pilots and built the “A-1”, their first aircraft. Today, he is acknowledged as “The Father of U.S. Naval Aviation”. Visitors to the museum will see a sizable collection of Curtiss aircraft that includes a full-scale reproduction of this first naval aircraft, plus a 1912 “Pusher”, a 1913 Model E – the first practical “flying boat” the 1914 “America” (a twin-engine flying boat designed to cross the Atlantic), a 1917 “Jenny”, and a 1927 “Robin”. From the Curtiss-Wright era (post 1929), included are a 1931 “Junior”, a 3/4 scale P-40 and last – but certainly not least, a C-46, WWII transport (this aircraft will actually be seen first, because it guards the main gate). Visitors are also encouraged to visit the Restoration Shop and talk with volunteers as they work on their current project – restoring a Curtiss Fledgling, a two-seat biplane dating to 1929 . As a museum of local history, the Curtiss Museum features an extensive exhibit dedicated to the history of local wineries. Did you know that the Pleasant Valley Wine Company is U.S. Bonded Winery #1, and was incorporated at Hammondsport in 1860? Also represented is a rich heritage that includes railroads, steamboats, local industry, and the days of yesteryear in general. Antique tools, toys, boats, home furnishings, musical instruments, and fire equipment are included in a collection that even has a “Hair Wreath” (made of human hair) that dates to 1861. There’s something here for everyone! Located in the lovely Finger Lakes Region of New York State, the Curtiss Museum is a “must see” for aviation and motorcycle buffs, plus anyone with an interest in our past and the fascinating accomplishments of our predecessors. The Bath National Cemetery provides an inspirational vista of thousands of white headstones, the medical center and the Conhocton valley. Interred at the cemetery are 5 Medal of Honor recipients from the Civil War and 29 unknown soldiers of the War of 1812. Tours of the VA campus, the National Cemetery or the museum may be arranged by contacting the Chief of Voluntary Services, Building 44 or by calling, 607-776-2111. In the center of the village are two Districts, as well as, 30 private homes throughout the village, listed on the National Registry of Historic Places. Architectural points of interest include County Office Row, Bath Presbyterian Church, St. Thomas Episcopal Church and the Village Post Office. Also, included in this district is Pulteney Park, the first clearing in Steuben County. You can view the “Walk of Names” in the center of the park, while enjoying the historic walking tour. Residential buildings offer a selection of Greek Revival, Queen Anne, Italianate central tower and Tuscan styles, with cobblestone, tamped earth and field stone materials, adding to the village’s enhancement. Downtown Bath offers many interesting unique shops. Bath has an 18-hole golf course, accessible to the public, plus a wide assortment of stores and three shopping plazas. The Conhocton River, a state classified trout stream with public access, skirts the village. Nearby Cold Brook has a regionally famous spring Rainbow Trout fishery. There is also Bass fishing in Lake Salubria. High populations of White Tail Deer, Turkey and small game attracts hunters from the Northeast. A public park is located at Mossy Bank with picnic facilities; hiking; biking; cross country ski trails; a Nature & Science Center and panoramic views of the Conhocton Valley. Events include the a Farmers Market on Wednesday and Saturday through the fall; Steuben County Dairy Festival in June; Music in the Park, Wednesday nights and the Steuben County Fair in August (the oldest in the nation). In October, Bath hosts the Wine Glass Marathon with runners from all over the world converging on the area and in December we celebrate the holidays with “Santa’s Workshop.” For information and a calendar of events, contact the Central Steuben Chamber of Commerce, 110 Liberty St., 2nd floor, Bath, NY 14810. 607-776-7122. The Former Gold Seal Vineyards 2011 SOUTHERN TIER SHOPPER SUMMER GUIDE 2011 35 36 2011 SOUTHERN TIER SHOPPER SUMMER GUIDE 2011 History of the PLEASANT VALLEY WINE COMPANY U.S. Bonded Winery No. 1 The Pleasant Valley Wine Company, popularly known as the Great Western Winery, located near the village of Hammondsport, New York, is the oldest winery in the Finger Lakes region. By the 1830's and 1840's, European settlers found that the Finger Lakes region provided such favorable growing conditions that grapes had outgrown home production capacities. On March 15, 1860, Charles Davenport Champlin and 12 local businessmen consolidated their holdings under "Articles of Association for the Manufacture of Native Wine" and, with $10,000 capitalization, built the first winery in this region, The Hammondsport and Pleasant Valley Wine Company, which was designated as Bonded Winery No. 1 in its State and Federal districts. The original winery was constructed on land whose price had soared from $10 to $100 an acre in one decade! It was built on a slope owned by Mr. Champlin overlooking Pleasant Valley, 2 miles south of Hammondsport. All winemaking operations were carried out by Jules and Joseph Masson, noted French-born winemakers of the time, in still-used wooden and stone structures, with adjacent cellars carved deep into the hillside. Eight of these Great Western Winery buildings were listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980. During the winery's first year of operation, 18 tons of Isabella and Catawba grapes were harvested, yielding 220 gallons of wine per ton. On August 17, 1862, the first recorded shipment, 100 gallons of wine, left the winery. Business thrived. While the Civil War brought supply and labor shortages, as well as price increases and transportation difficulties, the enterprise was sufficiently successful in 1865 to invest in Champagne-producing equipment. Twenty thousand bottles of Sparkling Catawba were made that year. In 1867, this wine was awarded honorable mention at the Exposition Universelle in Paris, the first American Sparkling wine to win an award in Europe. In 1873 in Vienna, the winery's Champagne first prize and its first European medal; since then, the Company's Champagnes have received numerous European gold medals and other awards. Because of the internationally recognized excellence of Pleasant Valley Champagnes and because of the similarities of climatic and soil conditions between this area and the Champagne district of France, Pleasant Valley came to be known as the "Rheims of America." When the U.S. Postal service opened a branch at the winery in 1870, it used the postmark, "Rheims, N.Y.", which was used until 1945, when rural delivery took its place. In March 1871, Mr. Champlin sent a case of Champagne to his close friend, Marshall P. Wilder, who was a well-known wine connoisseur in Boston. After introducing it at a dinner party at the Parker House, Wilder declared it to be "the Great Champagne of the Western World." The Champagne was thus dubbed "Great Western." Shipping records of the 1860's, '70's and '80's are filled with such prestigious accounts as S.S. Pierce, Macy's, Park Tilford, George F. Hueblin and Brother, Palmer House of Chicago, Parker House of Boston and individuals such as Professor Henry W. Longfellow of Cambridge, Mass. Pleasant Valley wines appeared on the lists of the most fashionable restaurants. They were even heartily recommended by doctors for their medicinal qualities. These were exciting years at Pleasant Valley. From 1872 to 1875, Mr. Champlin and area businessmen built the 9-mile Bath to Hammondsport Railroad to combat price increases of canal transportation. Not only was this a successful business venture, but it also brought tourists to the area to ride the Keuka Lake steamers, such as Lulu and Urbana, at 10 cents a ride. Later, on March 8, 1893, the Pleasant Valley Wine Company was registered as a New York State corporation, with the Champlins and Massons holding 205 of 400 out-standing shares of stock. Adding further excitement, on July 4, 1908, Glenn Curtiss made the first pre-announced airplane flight on the Pleasant Valley flats directly below the winery entrance. The world-renowned Curtiss Museum, dedicated to his flying endeavored and the remarkable decades when Hammondsport epitomized the country's spirit of innovation, attracts aviation enthusiasts from around the world to its spacious quarters across Pleasant Valley from the winery. The good news that Pleasant Valley had sold more Champagne in the first 6 months of 1919 than in any previous year was marred, on July 1, by the enactment of Prohibition. The winery was left with an inventory of 70,000 cases of Champagne and substantial quantities of still wine. Yet it survived the 14 years of Prohibition on sales for sacramental and medicinal purposes. After Repeal in 1933, the Company progressed steadily. Charles D. Champlin II, grandson of the founder and dean of American Champagne makers of his time., managed the operation until his death in 1950. The family retained control of the business until 1955, when it was sold to a company run by Marne Obernauer, a businessman from New Jersey, who renamed the winery Pleasant Valley Division of Great Western Producers. In 1961, the winery was acquired by Taylor Wine Company, its next-door neighbor, which was itself acquired first by the CocaCola Company in 1977, then Joseph E. Seagram & Sons in 1983, and finally Vintners International Company, Inc. in 1987. Having survived Prohibition and several ownership changes, the winery returned once again to local family control in 1995. Great Western Winery has the largest plantings of the vinifera varieties Chardonnay and Riesling in the East and also pioneered the production of FrenchAmerican varietal wines in the 1960's. It was the first New York State winery to produce ice wine and its natural ice wines, produced without artificial freezing, have since won several gold medals. It is the only New York winery to have won the Governor's Cup for "Best Wine in New York" two years in a row, The winery is the largest producer of bottle-fermented Champagnes in the eastern United States and, for over a century, Great Western Champagnes have been the most-honored American Champagnes in European competition and have enhanced the wine lists of some of the most prestigious American hotels and restaurants. Perched on a hill above picturesque Keuka Lake in the Finger Lakes region of New York, Heron Hill participates with VineBalance, a sustainable state viticulture program. Though not certified organic, green vineyard practices abound, including steering clear of chemical fertilizers, insecticides and herbicides. Grasses and plants grow freely (including between vine rows) to cut soil erosion, attract pest-fighting insects and serve as fixings in “green manure.” Owner John Ingle, an animal lover, also recently teamed up with Seneca White Deer Inc. - buy a bottle of Heron Hill’s semi-dry Riesling and $2 is donated to save a rare, all-white variation of the ubiquitous brown colored white-tail deer. And if you’re looking to get hitched in eco-style, Heron Hill is an approved Green Bride Guide vendor. In addition, the wine was the highest 9746 Middle Road rated Riesling in the competition, was graded with the title of “Exceptional” Hammondsport, NY 14840 and noted as being “fantastically 800.320.0735 balanced and utterly delicious”. The 2010 Dry Riesling also received a gold medal at the competition with “Rated the #1 Winery in the Northeast” Wine Report a rating of 90 points. Since their release in March of 2011, www.drfrankwines.com both the Semi-Dry and Dry Riesling have been recognized as outstanding wines. The Semi-Dry Riesling earned a gold medal earlier this year at the San Diego International Wine Competition while the Dry Riesling earned a gold medal at the Finger Lakes International Wine Competition. Both wines are from the 2010 vintage, .VSK which is recognized by many in the 4LKHSZ Finger Lakes area to have been an PU excellent growing season for vineyards. The exceptionally warm “Finger Lakes’ Most summer produced a climate that was Award-Winning Winery” near perfect for growing grapes and Wine Enthusiast has resulted in the production of excellent wines for the vintage. Dr. Frank wines have a history of performing well at these national and international wine competitions. The winery ended 2010 with a total of 52 gold medals. In 2009, the winery won more accolades than it has received in any other year with a total of 67 gold medals. Located on Keuka Lake a few miles north of Hammondsport, Dr. Frank’s has long been associated with the New York wine revolution. Its founder, Dr. Konstantin Frank, helped pioneer the introduction of the European vitis vinifera grapevines in the eastern United States. For his contributions in the American wine industry, he was inducted into the Wine Spectator’s “Hall of Fame”. Now in its third generation, Dr. Frank’s continues as New York’s most award-winning winery since 1962. Dr. Frank’s Wine Cellars is proud of its international winemaking team with each member bringing in their particular expertise. The talented group includes winemakers from California, Australia, France and Germany. The focus on world class wines continues with each generation of the family, each member living up to the Frank Family tradition of excellence. 40 2011 SOUTHERN TIER SHOPPER SUMMER GUIDE 2011 2011 EVENTS July 9: Shrimp & Chardonnay August 6: Merlot & Mignon Located on Keuka Lake, 3 miles south of Penn Yan. Include us in your visit to both Keuka and Seneca Lakes. 243 Rt. 54 East Lake Rd., Penn Yan, NY 14527 www.KeukaSpringWinery.com 315-536-3147 July 31, August 20, September 3, September 11: Music & Wine December 3 & 4: Holiday Barrel Tasting 2011 a Reminder of Vingate Variation at Keuka Spring Vineyards In the wine business each year's season is expressed in the wine. We've all noticed how all over the country, weather-wise, this year has gotten off to a rainy start. Or maybe it's just such a stark contrast to last year's long, warm spring that we forgot what a typical spring is like for those of us who live in the northeastern US. In fact, this year, although we have received recordbreaking amounts of rain so far, is only a few days behind average for growing grapes. As farmers of various crops know, this is part of being in the growing business. In the wine industry, we are fortunate enough to be able to appreciate year to year weather variation by marking the year grapes for a particular wine were harvested as the wine's vintage on the label. And the difference between vintages, also known as vintage variation (even though the grapes may be from the same vineyard and of the same variety), is one of the beautiful things about winemaking, and has existed for centuries. The winemaker must know how to work with the crop she/he has to accentuate the best qualities of the harvest in the wine. Keuka Spring Vineyards hosts a number of events in their wine education series where guests learn about vintage variation and the current season in the vineyard. Their Taste of the Vineyard on June 18 is a walk through the property while learning about how the vineyard is tended, and features an in-the-vineyard gourmet wine and cheese tasting. In their Summer Series, including Shrimp and Chardonnay on July 9 and Merlot and Mignon on August 6, guests sample different vintages with a food pairing and look for flavor characteristics of vintage variation in different years of the same wine variety. The winery also plans to hold tours during harvest on September 10 and 24, so that folks can get a close up perspective on this year's crop. Lastly, during their Holiday Barrel Tasting in December, guests are able to preview how this year's harvest will be turning out in the wine cellar. The events mentioned above are led by Mark Wiltberger, their winemaker, Len Wiltberger, owner, or Jeanne Wiltberger, who has a Master's degree in Horticulture. The winery also will host a music series this summer on their terrace. Local rock band Agonal Rhythm is scheduled for July 31, while Kickin' Back out of Fairport plans to play on August 20 and September 3. The Galtee Mountain Boys, an Irish music group, will play on September 11. Keuka Spring has Blue Heron Acres, a local grass-fed beef farm, lined up to offer grill your own burgers on a number of these dates. The events are weather dependent. One of the beautiful things about living in a cold climate (in addition to the lake, seasonal change, and so on) is enjoying cold climate wines, like those made in France, Germany and the Finger Lakes. 2009 and 2008, while being remembered as cool, rainy seasons, produced some of the finest aromatic white and red wines of the Finger Lakes. An example is Keuka Spring Vineyard’s sweepstake-winning 2008 Gewurztraminer, which last year was deemed Best White Wine in America at the San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition. This year the winery has recently released a new blend, its 2009 Seyval Chardonnay, which is half Seyval Blanc and half Chardonnay. More new releases include 2009 Chardonnay, 2010 Vignoles, and 2010 Riesling. Keuka Spring Vineyard’s gold medal winning wines for this year so far include 2009 Miller's Cove Red, Crooked Lake White, Clara's Red, 2009 Lemberger, 2010 Vignoles, and 2009 Gewurztraminer. Their 2009 Miller's Cove Red just won the Grand Prize at this year's New York State Fair. Keuka Spring Vineyards is open daily for tasting. It is located at 243 Route 54, just outside of Penn Yan on the east side of Keuka Lake. With a fantastic view of Keuka Lake, Keuka Spring Vineyards is a great place for picnics and also has a gift shop fully stocked with unique and handmade gifts. Owners Len and Judy Wiltberger have been committed to producing premium wines since they founded the winery in 1985. For more information about the winery and upcoming events, visit www.KeukaSpringWinery.com or contact them at 315-5363147. 2011 SOUTHERN TIER SHOPPER SUMMER GUIDE 2011 41 42 2011 SOUTHERN TIER SHOPPER SUMMER GUIDE 2011 2011 SOUTHERN TIER SHOPPER SUMMER GUIDE 2011 Keuka Overlook Wine Cellars and Bed & Breakfast Inn (Dog Tail Waggin’ Good Fun!) Terry & Bob Barrett, owners of Keuka Overlook Wine Cellars and Bed & Breakfast Inn, are living and working their dream. Both previously lived and worked in Cleveland, Ohio in the corporate world and decided life in the Finger Lakes was far better. Owning two businesses presents an incredibly demanding schedule, but there are plenty of perks to compensate. The couple truly enjoys hosting guests at their Inn and offering samples of their award winning premium Vinifera wines to visitors at their winery. Both businesses are situated high on top of a gorgeous hillside providing panoramic views of both Keuka and Waneta Lakes. In addition to the special events held each year at the winery, Keuka Overlook offers special Winemaker’s Dinner Packages all winter and spring where guests are treated to a two-night stay at the Inn and among other amenities, a five-course gourmet meal cooked by Terry, with each course paired to a special wine produced by Bob. Two years ago, the recipes featured many famous chefs, including Emeril Lagasse, J.J. Jackson, Bobby Flay and Rachel Rae. The menus from 2010 were theme related. Guests got to choose an authentic French menu, Island Cuisine, a menu featuring Exotic Fair from such distant lands as Morocco, Australia, India and Brazil, or a menu titled Cooking with Wine with each course prepared with a different varietal wine. The 2011 menus featured two unique cookbooks from the West Coast: The San Francisco Chronicle Cookbook by Michael Bauer and Fran Irwin and The Essence of Chocolate by John Scharffenberger and Robert Steinberg. The newest vintage of the winery’s flagship wine, the Triumph Meritage Blend, will be released soon after Memorial Day weekend, followed by the newest vintage of each of the winery’s other award winning wines. These include a Dry and semidry Johannisberg Riesling, the Chardonnay Reserve as well as our Blue Lake Chardonnay, Gewurztraminer, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. In addition to these premium wines, Keuka Overlook also specializes in some unique fruit wines. Available for tasting and sales are Red Raspberry, Cherry, Mulberry, and Blackberry. The Mulberry is estate grown (there are two huge Mulberry trees on the property providing all the fruit). And once again, Black Currant, finished two ways, one dry and one dessert style, will join the fruit specialty wines. Since the winery is in a somewhat secluded location (something that affords the visitor incredible panoramic views from high up hillsides), there are always the two “Rescue Schnauzers” to help you with directions. Grenache turned 8 years old in March and her brother Nicholas will turn 7 in September. Both are exceptionally good at barking out directions to lost visitors! When not napping or playing with their toy box full of squeak toys, the two friendly Miniature Schnauzers that hail from West Hollywood, California can be seen at the winery. They are both eager to meet new and regular visitors alike. Keuka Overlook’s gift shop now carries plenty of dog related items, including Gourmet Doggie Biscuits (taste tested by Grenache herself). Mandarin and Shamrock, the two stray cats felt left out, so new products include Gourmet Kitty Treats! Stop in for lots of “dog tail-waggin’ fun” and great wines! Tart Apples peel, core, slice to make 2 cups 3/4 tsp Cinnamon 1/2 cup packed Brown Sugar 2 Tbsp. Light Corn Syrup 2 Tbsp. Margarine or Butter 1/3 cup Pecan pieces 3 beaten Eggs 1 1/4 cups Milk 1 tsp. Vanilla 1/4 tsp. ground Nutmeg In a small saucepan combine apples and 1/4 cup water. Bring to a boil, reduce heat, cook covered over mediumlow heat for 5-7 minutes until apples are tender, stirring occasionally. Drain in a colander. Transfer apples to small bowl. Gently stir cinnamon into cooked apples. Set aside. In the same small saucepan combine brown sugar, corn syrup and margarine or butter. Cook/ stir over medium heat until mixture just comes to a boil. Remove from heat. Pour mixture into a 2 qt. baking dish (round is prettier on the serving platter). Sprinkle pecans over all. In medium mix bowl combine eggs, milk, vanilla, nutmeg. Arrange layer of half the bread cubes in the baking dish atop the caramel mix. Spoon cooked apples evenly over bread layer. Layer remaining bread cubes on top. Carefully pour the egg mix over bread, pressing the bread down gently to moisten the slices completely (a small plate works well). Cover w/ plastic wrap & refrigerate for at least 3 hours or up to 24 hrs.). Remove from refrigerator 2 hours before serving time. 1 hour before serving time, remove plastic wrap and bake uncovered in a 325-degree oven for 40-45 minutes (until a knife comes out clean). Remove from oven; run a knife around edge to loosen. Let stand 15 minutes. Carefully invert pudding onto a platter, spoon any remaining caramel mix over pudding. Cut into wedges or serve with a spoon. Serve warm with a choice of very cold sour cream or vanilla yogurt. Makes 8 servings. Meet The Father of nessed flight of one kilometer, earning him pilot’s Naval Aviation Glenn Curtiss is without doubt, one of Hammondsport’s most famous sons. Well before he ventured into aviation, becoming one of its most famous pioneers, he became the “fastest man on earth” by way of his daring as a motorcycle builder and racer. In 1907, he rode his 8 cylinder cycle at better than 136 miles per hour. Several of Curtiss’ motorcycles and full-sized early aeroplanes are on display at the Glenn H. Curtiss Museum of Local History. In 1908, Curtiss’ “June Bug,” with Curtiss at the stick, made the first official wit license number one. These ground breaking flying machines made Hammondsport the undisputed center ofAmerican aerial activity as early as 1911. These are some of the many facts you’ll learn about the early history of flight in America, including the use of the aeroplane for military purposes by the U.S. Navy. The museum will enable you to trace the evolution of manned flight, as well as the area’s “homespun” history, including a collection of everything from ladies’ fashions to toys and fire engines. The Glenn Curtiss Museum is a treasure trove for those fascinated with America at the turn of the century. Late in 1995, Penn Yan was rated #60 in “The 100 Best Small Towns in America” by Norman Crampton. It is one of just two communities in NY State named in the “Nationwide Guide to the Best Small Town Living.” The village boasts 2 lakeside parks, Red Jacket & Indian Pines, as well as, a public boat launching facility. A variety of outdoor pleasures including swimming, beaches, picnic tables and pavilions, playgrounds, public rest rooms and changing areas, tennis courts, a basketball court and public boat dockage. Penn Yan’s unique shopping districts, Main Street and the Lake Street Plaza, offer a blend of the old and the new. Cafes, pubs and restaurants are abundant. Connecting Keuka and Seneca Lakes is the Keuka Lake Outlet which has been converted to a 6 mile linear park, perfect for hiking, sightseeing and enjoying the Finger Lakes Feeling. Access to the Trail is available in the Villages of Penn Yan and Dresden, and at mill sites along the path. Trail maps are available at the Yates County Visitors Center, 2375 Route 14A. While in the area, make sure to visit the Oliver House Museum, which features changing exhibits representing rural lifestyles from earlier days. Another interesting stop is the Yates County Arts Council’s gallery on East Elm St., with exhibits from local artists on a rotating basis. A Farmer’s Market is held Saturdays between May and October on Main Street, Penn Yan. Experience country life firsthand at the Windmill Farm and Craft Market, between Penn Yan and Dundee, on Saturdays, plus Memorial Day, July 4th and Labor Day. Even if you work out regularly at the gym, changing your fitness routine with a 30-minute walk with your dog or a one-hour hike through a local park or nature preserve can add a refreshing burst of calorie-burning excitement to your day. However, don't just go out and hit the trails. Take time to review maps to learn about the lay of the land and know what kind of weather conditions you'll face. Make sure you know how to use the map and a compass before you go into the wilderness. Plan your route plus map out an alternate one. In case trouble arises, give your itinerary and expected return time to a friend and park ranger. Before you leave, get in shape. Consult your doctor about setting up an exercise routine that is both aerobic and strengthening. Be sure to get enough sleep and food before you leave so you don't run out of energy. It's important to dress appropriately when hitting the trails. Wear layers to regulate your body temperature -- natural fibers let your skin breathe and poly-blends are good in wet weather because they dry fast. Long sleeves and pants protect from sun and insects. When stopping to rest in cooler weather, put on a sweater or jacket to avoid chills. Wear a hat, which retains heat in the winter and protects against outdoor elements in the summer. On your feet, wear hiking boots or good sturdy walking shoes. Avoid blisters by breaking in shoes before your hike. It's not best to hike alone, but avoid travelling with more than 10 people; it's easier to lose track of someone that way. Be sure everyone knows the destination and never leave the trail without having someone wait for your return. Emergencies can arise so it's best to be prepared. Carry a first aid kit, water and an extra day's worth of food. Cover exposed skin with sunscreen to prevent sunburn. If you're not a fan of insects, you may also want to bring along insect repellent. To avoid getting "eaten" more than you have to on the trail, avoid wearing scented lotions, soaps, shampoos or hair products.
