2012 Annual Report - Boys and Girls Clubs of Central Minnesota
2012 Annual Report From Mark’s Desk Dear friends of the Boys & Girls Club: The dream of expanding the Roosevelt Boys & Girls Club to include a commercial kitchen and teen programming space is quickly becoming a reality for more than 1,000 children and youth who live in the neighborhood. With only 5,700 square Our Mission: To inspire all young people, feet of program space, the Club especially those who need was cramped and it was difficult to deliver a quality experience to youth. us most, to reach their full potential as productive, But this is quickly changing. With an expansion featuring 4,800 square feet responsible, caring citizens. of new construction and a renovation of current program space, the Roosevelt Boys & Girls Club will be transformed into a powerhouse ready to change lives - with a full-service kitchen and kids’ café to support the daily meal program (serving more than 12,000 meals a year), and a teen center which is positioning this Club to prepare the next generation of workers. The expansion opened to serve kids on March 11th. Then, the fun began with the renovation portion of the project. Once finished in June, the Roosevelt Club will be complete with a new check-in center, dedicated creative arts center, learning center, junior & senior leadership centers, a prevention center and a Head Start wing. We have raised a total of $925,000 toward our $1,175,000 goal, thanks to the generosity of the community, our Board of Trustees and Board of Directors, but we need your help to get us across the finish line to a debt-free facility. We hope to see you at the ribbon-cutting ceremony on June 27th! Sincerely, pg. 1 Academic Success Club youth will graduate from high school ready for college, trade school, military or employment. Programs at a Glance The Formula For Impact starts with the young people who need us most. Combined with an outcome-driven Club Experience (which includes the five key elements for positive youth development, high yield activities, targeted programs and regular attendance), youth should achieve the following three priority outcomes: Five Key Elements: • • • • • Safe, positive environment Fun Supportive relationships Opportunities & expectations Recognition We have a history of impact. The Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Minnesota is celebrating 39 years of dedicated service to youth. We provide outcome-driven experiences daily to more than 1,300 young people at the Southside, Eastside and Roosevelt Clubs, as well as 13 KIDSTOP sites located in the St. Cloud, Sartell-St. Stephen, Sauk Rapids-Rice and ROCORI school districts. pg. 2 Youth of the Year Jerry Akubue “Character is like a key. The better it is the more doors you can open.” This is the motto created by Jerry Akubue, 2013 Youth of the Year for Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Minnesota. This once self-described “shy kid in the corner” is now a confident young man who is comfortable in his own skin. After losing his mother to a battle with cancer, Jerry and his siblings were introduced to the Southside Boys & Girls Club through a close family friend. With support from the Club and strong self-determination, Jerry broke out of his shell, started interacting with others, and decided to try new activities. Jerry has become involved in career development programs, he’s won public speaking awards through the Tech Speech Team, he dabbles in hip hop dance and performing arts through GREAT Theatre, and volunteers with Habitat for Humanity and Kids Against Hunger. When Jerry graduates in May, he plans to attend MN State University at Mankato to pursue his dream of becoming a physician. As the Youth of the Year, Jerry received a $2,500 scholarship from the Windfeldt Family Scholarship Fund and an additional $750 scholarship from the Cheryl Lightle and Wade Skaja Scholarship Fund. Jerry received the title of Minnesota Youth of the Year on April 9, 2013, and he will compete for the title of Midwest Region Youth of the Year in July! Monika Lodermeier, Southside Post-Secondary Education Coordinator, knew it was important to offer direction to her older girls to prepare them for life after high school. She aimed to create a summer program that would give the teens a stepby-step roadmap to a post-secondary destination. Among the list of nearly 20 requirements, the girls had to interview a current college student, investigate two scholarships, finish two ACT prep packets, complete two personality inventories, work through FAFSA and fill out at least one college application. “By working on our checklist all summer, we know we have direction and support when it comes to all of our options for college,” said Grace Akubue, Southside member. Grace wasn’t the only one who felt this way - there were 12 other young women who successfully completed all of the requirements as well. Special thanks go to Business Professional Women which sponsored Girls Night Out. A group of professional women joined Monika and the girls at Olive Garden for the celebratory dinner. They served as mentors and inspired the girls to seek out their post-secondary options. “We talked about everything from dorm rooms to roommates to classes. It was so cool to talk to these women who have had the college experience and now have successful careers. We want that, too,” said Achiyza Olana, Southside member. The Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Minnesota’s postsecondary education programs were principally sponsored by the Otto Bremer Foundation.
