A Year in Review
2011 Annual Report
From Mark’s Desk
Dear friends of the Boys & Girls Club:
Over the years, many donors have shared that
they support the Boys & Girls Club because they
know that we are making a difference in children’s lives daily. In 2011, Boys & Girls Clubs of
America adopted the Formula for Impact, which
is a method for how
Clubs can increase our
Our Mission:
To inspire all young people,
positive impact on young people.
especially those who need
Basically, we know that Clubs have
us most, to reach their full
the power to change lives. We help
kids achieve in school. We help them potential as productive,
responsible, caring citizens.
develop leadership skills. And we
give them a positive place to just
have fun and be kids. This formula not only provides a strategy
for measuring our outcomes, but it will assist us in building a
more powerful Club experience for all young people in our
community.
However, the most profound way that we make an impact on
youth is through positive relationships with caring staff. We
serve many children who desperately need nurturing, and they’ll
be influenced most by those who make them feel good about
themselves. There is a resounding theme in the testimonials of
Club youth throughout the years who have said, “They believed
in me when I didn’t believe in myself,” and “without the Club, I
don’t know where I would be today.” Every child needs a cheerleader. Someone to nurture them. Someone to encourage them.
Someone to listen. Someone who cares.
With your help, we will continue to strengthen our efforts
to make a positive impact on the
youth in our community.
Because every child
deserves the
opportunity to
BE GREAT.

Programs at a Glance
The Formula For Impact
starts with the young people who
need us most. Combined with an
outcome-driven Club Experience
(which includes the five key elements for positive youth development, high yield activities, targeted
programs and regular attendance),
youth should achieve the following
three priority outcomes:
Five Key Elements:
•
•

•
Safe, positive environment
Fun
Supportive relationships
Opportunities & expectations
Recognition
We have a history of impact.
The Boys & Girls Clubs of Central
Minnesota is celebrating 38 years of
dedicated service to youth. We provide outcome-driven experiences daily to more than 1,200 young people at the Southside,
Eastside and Roosevelt Clubs, as well as 14 KIDSTOP sites located
in the St. Cloud, Sartell-St. Stephen, Sauk Rapids-Rice and ROCORI
school districts.

Youth of the Year
Boys & Girls Club’s Youth of
the Year Cham Odol is determined to make the dreams her
parents had for their children to
receive a better education and a
successful future come true. Her
Ethiopian family left their refugee
camp in Kenya for a better life in
the United States in 1995. Cham has exhibited leadership skills
since she first joined the Southside Boys & Girls Club in 2006.
She has participated in the Club’s Youth Speakers Bureau, Keystone service club, park clean-ups, Kids Against Hunger projects,
the Cultural Awareness and Racial Equity Team, Social Justice
Club and more. Her involvement in her Club and community
has given her valuable experiences which have guided her to realize her life goal of becoming a social worker to help immigrant
families access opportunities when arriving in America.
“The Club has given me great experiences that I wouldn’t have had
otherwise,” said Cham.
KIDSTOP Scholarship Program
We are committed to ensuring that all
children have a positive place to have
fun and learn after school. Through a
partnership with United Way of Central
Minnesota, supplemented with individual giving, we have been able to award
$466,368 in scholarships and county
childcare assistance to families in need
throughout 2011.
Angi has three school-aged children who needed a positive place
to be after school while she worked to provide for her family
during her husband’s deployment to Kuwait. KIDSTOP has been
able to give both parents the ability to take care of business at
home and overseas, knowing their children were well cared for.
“KIDSTOP is a wonderful place for my children to have fun at after
school. We appreciate the nurturing hearts that KIDSTOP has for our
family. Thank you!” said Angi.

The Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Minnesota is committed to
filling the basic needs of children and youth, and that’s why we
provide a daily snack and meal program at the Eastside, Roosevelt
and Southside Clubs.
Second Harvest Heartland/Feeding America also plays
an essential role in the program. Second Harvest allows
us to stretch our dollar further to provide nutritious,
hot meals, including fruits and vegetables.
Feeding Kids Partnership
This program would not be possible without a valuable partnership with GNP Company (formerly Gold’n
Plump Poultry) - which donates hundreds of pounds of
chicken each month to ensure that our young people are served
balanced, nutritious meals. In 2011, GNP Company donated 3,600
pounds of chicken to the Boys & Girls Club - enough chicken
for more than 14,000 meals. “The Boys & Girls Club represents
GNP Company’s own values and traditions: caring, family, youth,
and building stronger communities. We appreciate what they do
to help children, and we are glad to be a part of it!” said Lexann
Reischl, Corporate Relations Manager.
In the summer months, the program becomes even more critical to the young people we serve, as 86% of Club members are
eligible for free or reduced school lunches. Our participation in
the USDA’s Child and Adult Care Food Program and Summer
Food Service Program enables us to serve nutritious snacks and
meals five days a week for kids, effectively curbing
hunger for Club kids in Central
Minnesota.
