DECEMBER
32nd Ebgc Jailbreak fundraiser
On a chilly Saturday October 2nd, the
2010 Jailbreak escapees gathered at the
forecourt of HMP Chelmsford at 8.30am
to meet Lindsay Whitehouse, the Deputy
Governor. With old friends as well as
new teams taking part, the array of fancy
dress was fantastic with land girls, rowers
and lions amongst the assembled crowd.
The idea of the day is simple, the teams
‘escape’ from the prison and then try to
get as far as possible without spending
any money. At 9am the Deputy Governor
gave the signal to escape and off the

turn. They boarded a plane for Germany
and arrived in Backnang, the twin town of
Chelmsford. The Lions Club, arrived in
Cromer Police Station after using 5
different bus routes, attracting
congratulations and donations along the
way. The rowers arrived at Chelmsford
Boys Club and manned the rowing
machines as a team for over 6.5 hours
solid rowing.

DECEMBER 2010
CYP Boxing
Mountain Bike skills
U16 rep football
The CYP National Boxing Championships
began on 2nd October 2010 with the
Anglia Round being held at Hutton
Community Centre.
The mountain bike skills course was
held over three days at High Row in the
Lake District. The young people from
The Hut Youth Club in Braintree
broadened their knowledge on bike
maintenance and skills which are
essential for going off road.
The Essex Boys and Girls Clubs’
Representative Squad is made up from
players from affiliated football clubs
and youth clubs throughout the county.
More than 25 boxers from 12 amateur
boxing clubs across Essex entered the
prestigious event which represents the
pinnacle of amateur youth boxing in the
country. After the Anglia round and
then the Regional Round on the 17th
(against the South East Region), a total
of 7 boxers from Essex progressed to
the Quarter-Finals of the competition
against London, again held at Hutton
Community Centre on 24th October
2010.
On the day Mat McCarthy (Class B, 6063kg) of Chadwell St. Mary ABC was
extremely unlucky to lose his bout 3-4,
having been frustrated by his
opponent’s cautious and somewhat
negative approach. Also in Class B Jack
Murray (66-70kg) of Five Star ABC
produced a professional display to beat
C. Renton of Earlsfield, London.
In Class C the London boxers proved for
the most part too strong. However the
last bout of the day, at 81-86kg between
Sam Delaney (Hornchurch & Elm Park
ABC) and R.Slue of Fitzroy Lodge,
London, was an epic. Unfortunately for
Sam the judges sided with Slue 4-1 after
the recount had gone to 18-18!
Ron shares his expertise on one of the EBGC bikes
The young people were taught the skills
on a number of routes in Greystoke
forest that are used by the British Rally
team. They were able to practice
roadside repairs such as using the
puncture repair kit and mending the
chain with the chain tool, as well as
setting up and maintaining the bikes for
a ride.
The EBGC will be running events in the
New Year in order to introduce and
enthuse our members about Mountain
Biking. For more details please contact
the EBGC main office on 01245 264783.
The Rep Trial held on the Saturday 9th
October 2010 was a great
success with a total of 40 players from
Brentwood Athletic, Woodham Radars,
Basildon Boys and Island Boys and Girls
Club in attendance.
From the
attendees, 25 were invited into the
provisional squad which plays two
friendly trial matches before the final
squad is selected.
The final squad will play in prestige
fixtures against professional clubs like
Tottenham Hotspur, Ipswich Town and
Southend United, as well as touring the
North of England.
In the first trial friendly EBGC started in
slowly, going 2-0 down after just ten
minutes.
However the lads soon
settled down and began to pass the ball
around, finishing the half strongly.
EBGC came out with all guns blazing in
the second period after a stirring half
time team talk from stand-in manager
Ron Buckley. A glut of goals combined
with diligence in midfield and defence
eventually saw EBGC emerge 5-2 victors in a closely contested match.
Ebgc Paintballing
On Saturday 13th November, 58 young
people from Great Tey YAC, Wickham
St. Pauls YC, Maldon and Tiptree YFC,
SNAC and Wivenhoe YC took part in the
EBGC Paintball Day at Delta Force in
Upminster.
Crown and Manor (Red) take full advantage of
EBGC’s early confusion.
In the Semi Final, which was held in
South Wales, Jack Murray (Class B 6670kg) put in a brave performance
against a strong opponent in Tamuka
Muchapondwa from Reading but
unfortunately did not progress to the
final. A big thanks to all staff at Hutton
Community Centre for their support
throughout the competition and also to
Barry Bowers of the ABA, without
whose hard work the competition
would not be such a success.
Many thanks to Franklin Shillingford
and all of the Crown and Manor team
for being such good hosts and
providing
a great test for the
Representative team in their first
match. We now look forward to the
second friendly match which will be
held in early December.
After being split into two teams; ‘Fire’
and ‘Water’, the young people took part
in a minimum of 12 games in 6 different
combat areas. The competition went
right down to the wire with the scores
level heading into the final match.
Team ‘Fire’ eventually won the
competition to top off a fantastic day.
