photo needed 2013 2013 Annual Report Catholic Charities of the Diocese of St. Cloud, Minnesota Intensive Treatment Cottage construction progresses October 2013 Groundbreaking - August 2013 December 2013 In 2013, Catholic Charities began our Saving Children, Saving Families capital campaign. This $8 million initiative began when we recognized that the needs of our community are growing and changing. For nearly 100 years, Catholic Charities, with your help, has been there to help our neighbors in need. We recognize that to continue to serve these neighbors, we need to expand and enhance our services. To Expand Our Work: The $4 million endowment will ensure that the ever-expanding needs in Central Minnesota are met now and into the future. March 2014 2 To Enhance Our Work: The $4 million building campaign is to replace a 90-year old cottage at Catholic Charities St. Cloud Children’s Home. This new facility, set to open in the summer of 2014, will provide the proper space to care for the troubled youth who need more direct care, attention, and supervision. D ear friends, The publication of Catholic Charities’ Annual Report is a time to reflect on the impact individuals, families, and organizations have had on Central Minnesota through the work of Catholic Charities. In other words, to reflect on the impact that YOU have made. TOGETHER, we made a different tomorrow for 62,965 of our Central Minnesota neighbors in 2013. That’s God’s Love visibly poured out across the hills and valleys, plains and prairies. TOGETHER, we made a huge impact. And yet, as we page through this booklet, it’s easy to wonder if we, as individuals have made a difference. We have. As we have been working through our Saving Children, Saving Families capital campaign to add a new Intensive Treatment Cottage at Catholic Charities St. Cloud Children’s Home and to expand our work in all of our programs, I’ve been reminded of how the capital campaign for the original Children’s Home was conducted. It was one donation at a time, at a period in our history when few people could give large gifts. Instead, they gave what they could. Together, those original donors helped create a lifechanging program that has stood for 90 years. Even if a small gift given 90 years ago helped only one child, that one gift changed a life. All gifts, large and small, will change the lives of the children and families we serve. Huisken Meats, one of Catholic Charities’ Good Samaritan award recipients for 2013, probably doesn’t see the thousands of beef patties it shares with Catholic Charities Emergency Services Food Shelf as life-changing; but they are life-changing to the mom who would otherwise not have meat to feed her kids tonight. I know Mary Vos, our other Good Samaritan award recipient for 2013, does not feel all the time she’s given to Catholic Charities has changed lives. But it has. Mary’s volunteer station is down the hall from my office. One of her tasks is to keep track of our volunteers’ hours – information we are required to report to many organizations who grant us funds we use to help others. When I see her each day, helping so diligently as a volunteer, it inspires me. Thank YOU for your contribution to Catholic Charities during 2013. Know that it has made a difference right here, in Central Minnesota. Sincerely, Steven P. Bresnahan Executive Director Catholic Charities of the Diocese of St. Cloud 3 “Catholic Charities collaborations and connections in the community are incredible. Their programs reach out to not only the people in St. Cloud, but throughout Central Minnesota and that impresses me. It is gratifying to see many of the Catholic Charities volunteers that are so passionate when helping people in need. The process of accountability and follow-through demonstrates the help is not just a hand out, but help that allows people to get back on their feet by using compassion and kindness.” John McDowall, Circle of Hope Society Member 2013 Board of Directors Anthony Akubue St. Cloud PRESIDENT SECRETARY / TREASURER Peter Bellavance St. Cloud S. Four Simple Words F our simple words can change a whole family’s life. Read together every day. Carrie and her children read together every night. But that didn’t happen until Carrie became homeless and found Domus, Catholic Charities’ program for homeless women and children. Catholic Charities Domus Transitional Housing provides a place of comfort and security for women and their children while they are working to restore stability in their lives. One of the requirements established in the living contract for clients is to read 15 minutes per day with their children. While much of the work done at Domus helps women regain control over their lives, the number one client is the child. Sometimes forgotten in the struggles of mothers experiencing challenges are the children who truly suffer from the lack of a stable home. Some of the children have not been able to rely on the presence of their mother consistently. Lana Faber, program manager for Domus, believes the time spent between mother and child reading every day provides the basis for a lifetime of learning as well as a time to develop a loving relationship. Some children have been separated from their mothers before entering Domus, and the reading program allows a special time each day to make up for lost memories. The children are able to expand their minds and feel nurtured by their mothers. Carrie was amazed by her two-year old twins’ ability to recite the alphabet soon after starting daily reading. She understands the difference reading to her children has made because, years later, they still read every night and both she and her children look forward to the cherished time together. Catholic Charities presents awards to Huisken Meats, Mary Vos E ach year, Catholic Charities of the Diocese of St. Cloud presents Good Samaritan Awards to recipients who follow the example of the biblical Good Samaritan; that is, they help those who are in need without an expected reward. Huisken Meats honored for meat donations H uisken Meats of Sauk Rapids began donating beef patties to Catholic Charities Emergency Services Food Shelf several years ago. Each year, the organization donates an average of 100,000 beef patties. “Even though we are the largest food shelf in the area, a donation of that size is humbling,” said Kathryn Stolpman, manager of Catholic Charities Emergency Services. “Because of their generosity, we are able to offer each family another serving of meat. That’s very significant to our clients.” Stolpman points out that what Huisken Meats contributes is saleable product. “They could sell these beef patties, but they choose to donate them instead.” Catholic Charities Executive Director, Steve Bresnahan, along with Kathryn Stolpman, Catholic Charities Emergency Services Program Manager, present a Good Samaritan Award to Myra & Cliff Albertson and Jeannie Meehl from Huisken Meats. Mary Vos honored as Human Resources’ first volunteer M ary Vos moved to the St. Cloud area a decade ago to be closer to her daughter and grandchildren. When she arrived she didn’t know many people but had a positive attitude and skills built from years as a teacher and librarian. So she began to volunteer with her new church and Catholic Charities. She began by organizing the library at Catholic Charities St. Cloud Children’s Home, then moved on to Catholic Charities Human Resource Department. “She was our first volunteer,” said Mardi Noyes, Catholic Charities Director of Human Resources. “At first, we weren’t sure of how we’d keep her busy. Now, Mary actually has her own workload.” Mary volunteers about 15 hours per week at Catholic Charities, but she is humble about her contribution to the organization. “You don’t do volunteering because you expect recognition or monetary rewards, you do it for self-satisfaction and knowing you maybe are helping people.” Mary Vos, a long-time volunteer of Catholic Charities accepts her Good Samaritan Award from Catholic Charities Executive Director, Steve Bresnahan, and Penny Casavant, Director of Organizational Advancement. 9 Catholic Charities is Grateful for Private Grant Support Benton Telecommunications Foundation Senior Dining - $2,500 Bernick Family Foundation St. Cloud Children’s Home - $20,000 Capital One Financial & Housing Counseling - $500 Catholic Campaign for Human Development Social Concerns - $2,616 Catholic Charities USA Financial & Housing Counseling - $163 Centracare Health Foundation St. Cloud Children’s Home - $8,000 Central Minnesota Community Foundation HOPE Community Support - $15,000 Central Minnesota Community Foundation Central MN Foster Grandparent Program - $1,000 Central Minnesota Community Foundation Designated - $66,169 Chicago Care, Inc Senior Dining - $2,500 Citigroup Financial & Housing Counseling - $20,576 Diocese of Saint Cloud, MN Project Rachel - $6,120 East Central Energy Trust Senior Dining - $3,676 Emergency Food and Shelter National Board Program - Kanabec County Senior Dining - $2,175 Emergency Food and Shelter National Board Program - Pine County Senior Dining - $4,311 Holdingford Lions Senior Dining - $500 Hunger Free Minnesota Emergency Services - $40,000 Hunger Solutions (Minnesota FoodShare) Emergency Services - $38,651 Kraft Foods Inc.
