Board Chair &
President’ s Message
Living In Interesting Times….
There is an ancient Chinese proverb that is interpreted as “May you live in
interesting times.” And certainly, from a financial, political and social standpoint,
we can agree that we are now definitely living in very interesting times.
2012 was a year punctuated by starts and stops in the American economy,
turmoil in foreign economic markets, natural disasters, and political discord
almost everywhere. While many of these issues came to conclusion, others
continue, and we expect that 2013 will bring more of the same, along with
additional new and different challenges. In response to any unanticipated events,
we want our membership to be assured that Southland is adequately prepared
to respond to whatever events may come our way and we are ready to help our
Members in whatever way we can.
So, we are all the more proud to report to you some very good and interesting
information regarding 2012. Southland Credit Union is safe, sound, secure, and
continuing to grow! We continue to provide you with innovative new products
and services, competitive rates, and a growing branch network with our hallmark
of specialized personal service to our Members.

Financial Strength
The past fiscal year was one of exceptional financial
success for Southland. From our positive revenue
growth, reduced interest rate risks, new products and
enhanced electronic services, to the increasing of our
membership base, we are pleased to report that 2012
was one of positive results and forward momentum.
While many of our peers continued to struggle with
financial challenges, your Credit Union was able to
increase its financial strength by almost a 17% yearover-year increase, while simultaneously expanding our
delivery channels, market share, and membership base.
organizations in addition to serving our Members at the
Credit Union full-time.
Greater Conveniences
Total assets at Southland were $483 million at year-end
2012, positioning your Credit Union in the top 500 out
of nearly 7,000 credit unions nationwide. While growth is
important, maintaining the overall financial health of the
Credit Union with continued dedication to exceptional
member service remains our driving focus.
This past year we continued to expand our services and
invest in our future. In 2012, we expanded our delivery
service channels with the implementation of “Check 21,”
by upgrading and installing new ATMs, and by adding
mobile banking and mobile deposit capabilities. We
also expanded the number of new memberships in our
list of impressive partner companies that we serve. In
late 2012, Southland successfully completed a merger
with Santa Monica City Employees Federal Credit Union
(SMCEFCU), welcoming an additional 3,400 Credit Union
Members to our Southland family. We are very pleased
to partner with SMCEFCU and to have the opportunity to
bring greater financial well-being to both Credit Union
memberships.
Community Outreach
Planning Ahead
“People Helping People” goes far beyond just
membership—it is a community endeavor. This past
year Southland continued to stretch its helping hand out
to the communities and charities in the areas we serve.
While growth, service, and trust continue to be the key to
our success, we have not forgotten our communities and
their needs.
We recognize the market is filled with competitive
financial options and that there are many alternatives
available to you. Accordingly, we need to earn your
business every day and are firmly committed to fulfilling
your financial needs through the development and
delivery of innovative products and services with our
hallmark of exceptional member service. You have our
pledge that our energy and investments will continue to
focus on efforts to improve your prosperity, exceeding
your expectations and overall Credit Union experience.
Community is important to Southland and we
understand this by supporting the areas we serve in a
myriad of ways. Throughout this past year, Southland
contributed to the support of schools, foundations,
chambers of commerce, civic organizations, and
community events. We are very proud, as well, to report
that we have many of our employees who serve as
volunteers, on their own time, for various non-profit
At Southland, we are moving forward together, openly
embracing future challenges as opportunities during
these interesting times. Thank you for your continued
membership, loyalty, and support.

a StrongerCommunity
The needs of the community is a priority at Southland Credit Union. Our
team members and Members often give back to the community with their
own time and funds, ranging from support to education advancement.
Southland’s employees volunteer and support our community throughout
the year with various charities, toy drives, food drives, women and
children’s causes, local school programs, community events, and several
other important community needs.
We care as much about our communities’ quality of life as we do their
financial success.

Report
very Member can be proud of the accomplishments the Credit Union has
achieved since 1936. You are the reason Southland has been a success for
over seventy-six years, and our future continues to depend on you and our
other Members using our great services.
Southland ended 2012 in a very robust financial position, ready to continue our
mission of fulfilling our Members’ financial needs. The Credit Union recorded net
income of more than $6 million for the year, almost double what had been planned.
The higher earnings were primarily the result of an increase in the use of Credit
Union services by the Membership, stronger demand for loans and fewer loan
delinquencies. Because of the higher earnings, overall equity increased 17%, to
11.5% of assets and well in excess of the minimum regulatory requirement of 7%.
In October, Santa Monica City Employees Federal Credit Union merged with
Southland, resulting in an increase of $29 million in assets, the addition of a branch
office in Santa Monica, and 3,400 new Members joining the Southland family!
The merger enhanced an already strong year of financial performance, resulting
in Southland finishing 2012 with $483 million in total assets, Member deposits
increasing to $420 million, the payment of $2.3 million in dividends, more than 6,700
new memberships opened, and a $7.6 million increase in capital to a new record of
$55.3 million.
I am pleased to report that your Credit Union remains very well capitalized and
ready to absorb any future financial challenges that may await us. It has been my
pleasure to serve as Secretary/Treasurer of your Credit Union during this past year.
Your volunteer Board of Directors and Supervisory Committee members work
hard to ensure the safety and soundness of the Credit Union. Thank you for your
continued support.
Sincerely,
Walter Finnigan

Supervisory
CommitteeReport
T
he Supervisory Committee is comprised of an independent group
of Member volunteers charged with acting as the “watchdog”
of the Credit Union, to protect and safeguard Member assets.
This role includes ensuring that records are accurate, internal controls are
adequate, and that Members receive the best possible service.
To assist with these duties, the Supervisory Committee engages two
independent, national CPA firms to conduct the external financial
statement audit and Member account verification, as well as ongoing
internal audits of the Credit Union operations and controls. The
Committee also works directly with Federal and State regulators in
facilitating routine regulatory examinations of the Credit Union.
Perhaps most importantly, the Supervisory Committee provides an open
avenue of communication for you, the Members of the Credit Union.
The Committee reviews and responds to every letter it receives from our
Members to ensure you receive excellent service. Our Members benefit
from this open communication because the comments and feedback are
used to ensure Southland maintains the highest level of integrity and
service.
The external auditor’s opinion letter as of and for the year ended
December 31, 2012 affirmed that the financial statements of the Credit
Union are fairly stated, in accordance with generally accepted accounting
principles. It is the unanimous opinion of the Supervisory Committee that
Southland Credit Union is financially strong and operated in a sound and
prudent manner for the benefit of its Members.
Sincerely,
Angie Avery
