While many of these issues came to conclusion, others continue, and we expect that 2013 will bring more of the same, along with additional new and different challenges. In response to any unanticipated events, we want our membership to be assured that Southland is adequately prepared to respond to whatever events may come our way and we are ready to help our Members in whatever way we can. This past year we continued to expand our services and invest in our future. In 2012, we expanded our delivery service channels with the implementation of “Check 21,” by upgrading and installing new ATMs, and by adding mobile banking and mobile deposit capabilities. We also expanded the number of new memberships in our list of impressive partner companies that we serve. In late 2012, Southland successfully completed a merger with Santa Monica City Employees Federal Credit Union (SMCEFCU), welcoming an additional 3,400 Credit Union Members to our Southland family. We are very pleased to partner with SMCEFCU and to have the opportunity to bring greater financial well-being to both Credit Union memberships. Community Outreach Planning Ahead “People Helping People” goes far beyond just membership—it is a community endeavor. You are the reason Southland has been a success for over seventy-six years, and our future continues to depend on you and our other Members using our great services. Southland ended 2012 in a very robust financial position, ready to continue our mission of fulfilling our Members’ financial needs. The Credit Union recorded net income of more than $6 million for the year, almost double what had been planned. The higher earnings were primarily the result of an increase in the use of Credit Union services by the Membership, stronger demand for loans and fewer loan delinquencies. Because of the higher earnings, overall equity increased 17%, to 11.5% of assets and well in excess of the minimum regulatory requirement of 7%. In October, Santa Monica City Employees Federal Credit Union merged with Southland, resulting in an increase of $29 million in assets, the addition of a branch office in Santa Monica, and 3,400 new Members joining the Southland family! The merger enhanced an already strong year of financial performance, resulting in Southland finishing 2012 with $483 million in total assets, Member deposits increasing to $420 million, the payment of $2.3 million in dividends, more than 6,700 new memberships opened, and a $7.6 million increase in capital to a new record of $55.3 million. I am pleased to report that your Credit Union remains very well capitalized and ready to absorb any future financial challenges that may await us. It has been my pleasure to serve as Secretary/Treasurer of your Credit Union during this past year. Your volunteer Board of Directors and Supervisory Committee members work hard to ensure the safety and soundness of the Credit Union. Thank you for your continued support. This role includes ensuring that records are accurate, internal controls are adequate, and that Members receive the best possible service. To assist with these duties, the Supervisory Committee engages two independent, national CPA firms to conduct the external financial statement audit and Member account verification, as well as ongoing internal audits of the Credit Union operations and controls. The Committee also works directly with Federal and State regulators in facilitating routine regulatory examinations of the Credit Union. Perhaps most importantly, the Supervisory Committee provides an open avenue of communication for you, the Members of the Credit Union. The Committee reviews and responds to every letter it receives from our Members to ensure you receive excellent service. Our Members benefit from this open communication because the comments and feedback are used to ensure Southland maintains the highest level of integrity and service. The external auditor’s opinion letter as of and for the year ended December 31, 2012 affirmed that the financial statements of the Credit Union are fairly stated, in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles. It is the unanimous opinion of the Supervisory Committee that Southland Credit Union is financially strong and operated in a sound and prudent manner for the benefit of its Members.
