ASEAN Tourism Forum (ATF) is a cooperative regional effort to promote the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) region as one tourist destination where Asian hospitality and cultural diversity are at its best. This annual event involves all the tourism industry sectors of the 10 member nations of ASEAN: Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam. Each year, the hosting of ATF is rotated among the member countries. ATF 2014 marks the 33rd anniversary of this event since its inauguration in Malaysia in 1981. In line with its theme ASEAN – Advancing Tourism Together, ATF 2014 has raised the tourism industry value-chain to a higher level through strong cooperation among ASEAN member states. The Forum also continued ASEAN’s objective to explore the sustainable development of tourism and reviewed various tourism initiatives and plans, in line with the mantra of Tourism Conserves, Preserves, and Protects. The ATF 2014 has further strengthened intra-regional cooperation and coordination in tourism through various meetings such as the 17th Meeting of ASEAN Tourism Ministers, and the 13th Meeting of ASEAN Plus Three (China, Japan, & Republic of Korea) Tourism Ministers, besides other meetings of National Tourism Organisations (NTOs). The presence of over 1,600 delegates, including 100 foreign and local travel trade media at the ATF 2014 offered Malaysia an excellent opportunity to showcase its diverse tourism products, particularly those in Sarawak and Sabah, and raise awareness of the celebration of Visit Malaysia Year 2014. PETALING JAYA : InternationalLiving.com’s annual Global Retirement Index 2014 has listed Malaysia as the third best place to retire for North Americans. The annual index which is now in its 23rd year, listed 24 countries and Panama came out tops, while South American nation Ecuador came in second in the index that was released two days ago. According to InternationalLiving.com, Malaysia is the best place to retire in Asia. In last year's global retirement index, Malaysia was also placed third and in 2012, they were fourth behind countries like Mexico, Panama and Ecuador. The report highlighted some tourist attractions in Malaysia such as the beaches, hill stations, mountain retreats, as the perks for those who want to retire here. For most retirees, health care is essential and according to the index, Penang and Kuala Lumpur, provide some of the best health care facilities in the country. "The hospitals are top-notch and the physicians speak English, having been either been trained or completed their postgraduate studies in the US or UK - which makes the cost of health care all the more incredible. "You can see a specialist without any need for an appointment for as little as US$11 (RM36.20). Just turn up. It’s the same with dentists," said InternationalLiving. com. Other aspects that were mentioned were the first class infrastructure, high-speed connectivity and cable TV. "The country’s diverse ethnic mix makes being a stranger here easy. "Whether you live in bohemian Penang or Kuala Lumpur - the country’s hip capital, you’ll meet friendly locals who are happy to stop and chat and welcome you into their home," it said. Malaysia was named the best green destination for the second consecutive year while Langkawi was crowned runner-up as a honeymoon destination and the KL International Airport was declared a joint runner-up with Heathrow Airport in the best airport category. "It is a regional recognition for Malaysia and we will continue to promote places like Taman Negara as well as Sabah and Sarawak," Tourism Malaysia director (Mumbai) P.Manoharam said. Malaysia expects tourist arrivals from India to increase from 650,989 last year to between 780,000 and 800,000 this year. India is Malaysia's sixth largest source of visitors. Manoharam said Langkawi was popular among Indian and South Asian travellers not only for honeymoon but also as a family destination. "Langkawi is runner-up as a honeymoon destination after Maldives, which is a high achievement,” he told Bernama after receiving the awards here. The readers' poll was conducted through the magazine and online in 2013 over a period of five months. Magazine editor-in-chief Payal Kohli said the third edition of the India's Best Awards boasted the biggest number of winners as the competition was very close in many categories, resulting in a number of joint winners and runners-up. Travel + Leisure Southeast Asia has about 60,000 readers in 12 countries in Southeast Asia, including Hong Kong and Macau. - New Straits Times, 1 April 2014. The Malaysia My Second Home (MM2H) programme is also beneficial for retirees as it allows non-Malaysians to stay in Malaysia on a social visit pass for 10 years, and it’s automatically renewable for an additional 10 years when it expires. Other countries such as Guatemala, Malta, Brazil, Spain, Cambodia and Thailand were part of the 24 nations listed as retirement havens. According to InternationalLiving.com, all 24 countries in the index were in close contention for the number one spot, but Panama nicked it due to its best range of retiree benefits. "In the past year, Panama has introduced new visas, which makes it easier to gain residence there, and the country has made major advances in infrastructure,” said the website. - The Star, 7 January 2014 14 | Ministry Of Tourism And Culture, Malaysia PERAK MAN : SIRIH PULANG KE GAGANG LENGGONG - Selepas 24 tahun, rangka manusia prasejarah paling lengkap, Manusia Perak atau Perak Man yang asli dipamerkan kepada orang ramai di tempat asal dia ditemui. - Utusan Malaysia, 16 Februari 2014 Buletin 1MOTAC | 15 PARTNERS KUALA LUMPUR - MALAYSIA 2014 Laureus World Sports Award 2014 T he recently-concluded Laureus World Sports Awards 2014 has indeed step Malaysia’s game up in the tourism industry.
