We are very pleased to provide you with a report that captures some of our impact. We are bombarded daily with statistics telling us the impact on our lives of environment, diet, obesity, lack of activity, social issues, financial pressures, joblessness and family disintegration. Our YMCA works to combat these statistics and turn them around for real people in our community. Some impact comes immediately while other times it is accumulated over many years of involvement with our YMCA. We impact the lives of children, families, youth, adults and seniors every day and spans child care, day camp, aquatics, youth programs, fitness and YMCA Ontario Early Years programs. Over 10,000 residents of Northumberland County regularly utilize our vast array of programs seeking impact on body, mind and spirit, and our YMCA delivers. 2012 was an exceptional year. Despite the economic downturn our YMCA held steadfastly to the mission of delivering a wide variety of programs. Whether participants were learning new parenting skills, preparing for their first day of kindergarten, “zumba-ing” their way to a healthier life, learning to scuba dive, or developing team skills on the new low-ropes course, our values-based programs were delivered by dedicated staff and volunteers focused on providing excellent service. We are proud of our impact and our ability to face all the tough statistics and turn them around. We could not do it without the support of many individuals, donors, volunteers, staff, community leaders and partners who believe that what we do makes a difference. Sarah Sculthorpe, Volunteer Board Chair “Our YMCA provides solutions to local needs.” Penagos Anne Marie Taylor Powney Aidan Daniel When Aidan moved to Cobourg at the age of 7, it was a difficult time for her family. With only one parent employed at a lower paying job that required commuting, it was a challenge for them to find affordable activities for their children. What they did find was the Y. With the help of YMCA Strong Kids, Aidan and her brother were able to take swimming lessons, participate in programs and attend summer camp. Aidan joined the Y Youth Leader Corps and at 12 she asked to be a volunteer. Aidan wanted to volunteer as she admired the youth staff; she wanted to be like them and become a role model to other children. Aidan wanted to show she was responsible and hoped she could get a job at the Y someday. It worked and at 16 she began working in camp and youth programs. Today Aidan works in our Play Centre and Youth Programs. She is taking her Bronze Cross and Bronze Medallion and after recently completing the Fitness Instructors Course she started teaching Aqua Zumba. Aidan loves coming to work because she feels happy and surrounded by her second family. She has made a lot of Y friends over the years and would not be as focused on being active and healthy were it not for her years at the Y. This year she has gotten involved as a volunteer with the YMCA Strong Kids Campaign, sharing her own story to encourage people to give to help others. Aidan feels she has a responsibility to make a difference in children’s lives, just like she had thanks to YMCA Strong Kids. Every Extreme Fit class Daniel comes to is a milestone for him. Daniel suffers from mental illness and struggles with addiction. He has had to rebuild his life and find a serene place with people he can trust and where he can manage his independence. Daniel lives on a disability pension in rural Trent Hills in a renovated barn with his dog, and he keeps busy by volunteering at a horse farm, a market farm and the Warkworth Penitentiary amongst others. Thanks to financial assistance from YMCA Strong Kids, Daniel comes to the Y once a week with transportation help from a local access initiative. Daniel says that coming to the Y is a total change from his normal life. He really looks forward to his Y Fridays! As well as fitness, he swims and he enjoys the showers and hot tub. Daniel loves Jason’s Extreme Fit class as he says he is an extreme guy and pushing himself really hard suits his personality. Through the class he has overcome feelings of being an outsider, he feels he belongs and is building relationships with other participants. He feels so much physically healthier and his self-esteem has improved. The Y brings balance to Daniel’s life, making him feel that he is making healthy choices, meeting people and keeping the addictions at bay. “The YMCA is somewhere I feel safe.” “The Y brings balance to my life.” Matthew “The Y staff are just wonderful with helping Matthew manage his daily life.” Andrea and Kevin brought their son Matthew to our YMCA Beatrice Strong Child Care Centre in Port Hope 2 years ago for full time care while they both worked. Matthew, then 3, often had issues with behaviour but his parents both thought he was a bit of a difficult child and he would improve as he grew and learned. He is an intelligent boy who likes to build and figure out how things work, but he just was not handling many situations well. It was Laurie Gourd, Supervisor at our child care who suggested having Matthew tested as she noticed he was very affected by noise and transitions from noisy to quiet environments. She could see that he was slower to grasp group dynamics and struggled with handling difficult situations both of which caused him stress. Andrea feels now that if Laurie had not stepped in to help them to see this and connect with a counselor, they do not know where they would be with Matthew today. Laurie works closely with the teachers and principal at the school on a team approach to help Matthew. The team is currently working to develop a plan to help Matthew make a successful transition from SK to Grade 1. Andrea never worries about him when he is at child care. The staff at the child care know all of Matthew’s triggers and make a great effort to help him avoid stressful situations and help him deal with them if they happen. Matthew has made friends at child care and loves the staff. Andrea loves how much the Y staff care for Matthew and their family. Sharon Sharon joined our YMCA in July of 2012 when she retired. When she worked 6 days a week for long hours she found no time for herself, and over the years developed diabetes, asthma, arthritis and gained a lot of weight. She was intimidated about coming in as she had never been an athletic or active person, but she knew she had to improve her diabetes and health issues or she would be facing years of illness. Sharon was very afraid she would not like it and would give up. Starting with dietary changes and healthy cooking, then gradually adding in aquafitness, swimming lessons, chair yoga and recently starting to work with free weights, she has seen incredible success. Sharon has cut her insulin intake by 72%, she has lost 8-1/2” on her waist, 7” from her hips and 7” from her chest. When she started she could only swim 1/2 a length of the pool and now she swims 40 lengths. Sharon also has hearing limitations and cannot hear in classes. She cannot believe how kind the staff and members have been helping her to understand and learn. Sharon credits the support and friendship of the staff and the members for helping her believe she can be fit and healthy and she belongs. “The YMCA has helped me rediscover my life.” Leadership Team Kyle Barber Debbie Brown Mike Bunn Lynne Caffin Eunice Kirkpatrick Happy Mireault Leslie Murray Keith Publicover Tim Strong Marina Turner-Johansson CEO Manager, Child Care Director, Business Development & Finance Manager, Administration & Human Resources Director, Operations Manager, Funds Development & International Manager, Membership & Programs Manager, Assets Manager, Information Technology Manager, Community Outreach Thank you to our partners and government agencies for helping us reach out to our community with their generous financial and resource support.
