On March 9th, 2011 Paws and Whiskers and the world lost a very special person. Wendy Hipp was a volunteer foster home for fourteen years and provided a loving foster home for many displaced cats. Wendy couldn’t say no to a small furry face and at times
had four or five moms and kittens in her care along with working her full time job. Wendy, along with her
husband Doug, were the shelter’s 2005 volunteers of the year for their tireless work fostering the area’s
homeless population of feline mothers. Try as we might, we were never able to make Wendy understand
that not all kittens could be saved. Wendy took the occasional loss from a litter very very hard. There was
only one time in a year Wendy was not available to help our feline friends and that was the first Saturday in
May. On that day she was in Louisville, Ky watching the Derby. Wendy, Thank you for all your help.
On Sunday, April 3rd, PAWS had wall to wall
people as around 100 people came out for the
unveiling of our new “Cat Condo” (Emma thinks it was for her birthday so
we won’t tell her otherwise) Thanks to a grant from “The Kenneth A. Scott
Charitable Trust, a KeyBank Trust”, we were able to construct a Cat
Condominium inside the shelter at 32 Hillwyck. Now up to ten of our feline
friends can reside in a free roaming environment enabling them to socialize
with other cats, climb, play, with no obstructions to get in their way. The
11 ft. by 7 ft. area is large enough for several people to enter and interact with the residents for socialization
or as potential adopters. The change in personality of individual cats was almost immediate when the confines of the cages were removed. Those attending were treated to hot dogs, lemonade, cake, cookies and
other goodies. There was a 50/50 drawing with the shelter earning $144.00.
In the short time the room has been open, we have already seen the adoption of two cats, that had been here for over a year, whose personality before the condo prevented them from being adoptable. All in all the open
house and the condo was and are tremendous successes. If you didn’t get
a chance to stop in at the open house, please stop by and spend some time
in the condo with its residents.

Kroger
We received $750.00 in donations from the Kroger Community Rewards for the last quarter.
If you have not already done so, please renew your registration.
Kroger requires you re-designate your charity every year after April 1st.
Opening day was April 14th, 2011 and our volunteers were on hand manning concession
stands to earn money for PAWS. We have twelve dates left before the season ends in September. PAWS needs eight volunteers to man concession stands at Mud Hens home games
at 5th Third Field. PAWS then receives a percentage of the stands’ earnings. Continued to page 5
Kit-Togethers are monthly outings at local restaurants where PAWS supporters meet for lunch or dinner and earn money for the shelter. Each venue
has agreed to donate a percentage of each guest check to PAWS. So far this year we have had KitTogethers at City Barbque, Capers, Max & Ermas, and Amies Pizza Factory. Continued to page 5 with schedule .

Our Old West End Yard Sale is only a few weeks away. And we are looking for your
donations of saleable items from A to Z.. To make this year’s sale a success, please
search through your gently used household items for those things you may no longer
want or use. This year’s sale will be June 4th & 5th at 2335 Scottwood. Continued to page 4

Excuse me if I don’t get up but I am still
busy reading all the signatures on my
giant birthday card. I really appreciate all
of you who came out to help me celebrate my 14th birthday and
this wonderful card. It sure was nice to see over a hundred of
my loyal subjects come out just for me. Especially after last
year’s embarrassment when almost no one showed up to honor
me. Below is a picture of the beautiful birthday cake Bonnie
Edinger provided for my special day. Thanks to all of my loyal
subjects who showered me with gifts all afternoon, I collected much more in homage than I can ever use
by myself so I am going to pass most of it along to my feline friends here at Paws and Whiskers. I also
allowed a break in the day’s festivities so that our new cat condo could be dedicated to my old friend Kevin
Coleman. Kevin was a great guy who always let me use the arm of his
wheelchair as a landing point when I jumped from my home to the floor as I
started my daily inspection of the shelter. Beside losing Kevin, we have in the
past two months lost Wendy Hipp, Lori Hoodlebrink, and a cool cat that came
into PAWS when I did, “Little Fred”. He lived with the Big Guy so I really don’t
feel much like talking today. See you in August.
EMMA’S

Cool Cat Strut
The Cool Cat Strut committee is working
hard on details for the October 21st extravaganza at St. Clement’s Hall. Solicitation letters went out to businesses at
the end of April, looking for sponsors and
items for the silent auction. Our new
volunteers Amies Pizza Factory as caterer, planning the entertainment, and other
events for the evening. A DJ, has been
selected for the music because of flexibility in terms of the type of music and
breaks in the music for announcements.
We will again have the 50/50 raffle and a
Silent Auction with a Chinese auction
being added this year. This year we will
have a “Best Cat Costume” prize in addition to other categories. With the larger
committee, we are looking for a lot of
fresh new ideas that hopefully will make
this year’s Strut the best ever for your
entertainment.
Member Give Away
Paws and Whiskers appreciates its loyal members and to
show that appreciation, we have a small giveaway in every
newsletter. Each issue has a current member’s name published. This issue’s winner of our thank you gift is Cynthia
J. Vroman. Congratulations C.J.. If you stop by the shelter,
your gift, provided by our Krafting For Kitties group, is ready
for pick-up. In addition, save this coupon and you can exchange it for two tickets to the
2011 Cool Cat Strut
When they are available in August.
It’s been a while so I figured I would send you an update on Sparkle. He’s been wonderful and has been enjoying life in
California. He especially enjoys mornings in the sun; he’ll look up at us with an expression of pure pleasure and contentment as he lies in the sunshine (we have a term for this state – “sun drunk.”). He also enjoys watching the birds outside. Since our condo is on
the 3rd floor, he has a good view of the tree tops and bird activity. He also loves to chase his ping pong balls, and to kick and bite wadded-up
paper bags. When we moved to the San Diego area, I came out here first. My husband said to “go ahead and buy whatever I wanted for our
place.” (I took that literally…and found out later it wasn’t meant literally!) During this brief span I came upon two beautiful Louis XVI style wing
chairs with a swan motif. They were a wee bit out of place in our initial studio apt.(!) but they have since traveled with us from place to place. To
date Sparkle hasn’t paid much attention to them. Occasionally he would jump on the back of one to have a better look at the birds, or to get our
attention when he thought we should be feeding him his dinner. Last night he decided to try one out as a
scratching post. (The horror!) My husband promptly covered the two chairs in blankets to dissuade Sparkle
from using them as a scratching post. Sparkle still wanted to go on them, so my husband then propped a
pillow on one in such a way as to block his entrance to the chair. When I awoke this morning, Sparkle didn’t
come to greet me as he usually does. I found him on the swan chair, on top of the pillow, happily snuggled
down against the curved, padded back of the chair. (Picture lower left opposite page) He was so content and
comfortable that for the first time he didn’t even care about breakfast! Then later when we watched TV at
night he didn’t come and sit on our laps like he always does. Where was he? In his new Sparkle palace on the
swan chair. When we walk around to do things, we see just the top of his head peeking up over the curved
side of the chair, watching us. Amazing how a plan can backfire. He is the joy of my life!

I thought this might be a good time to update
Paws and Whiskers on my life. My name is bigger than I am, IW SGM Summer Splash of Luvpurrs, better
known as Summer to my friends. I was adopted from Paws and
Whiskers at a cat show in Livonia, MI back in September of
2008. Paws and Whiskers had some rescues there being shown
and looking for their forever homes. I was judged by what is
now my new Mommy on Friday night in one of the rings. She
fell in love with me on first sight! After making me her Best
Summer’s picture from the 2008-2009 T.I.C.A Year Book
Household Pet Kitten in her judging ring, she found out I was up
for adoption and the rest is history! She took me home to North
Carolina after that show and my life as a show cat began. I traveled all over the United States. I ended up Best
Household Pet Kitten in the Southeast Region for that year and I was also 3rd Best International Household Pet
Kitten which means I was the 3rd highest scoring Household Pet Kitten
in the whole world!! That is what the IW (International Winner) before my
name means. My Mommy showed me a little bit when I turned adult to get
me my adult titles, which is what the SGM (Supreme Grand Master) before
my name is. This is the highest title you can get as a Household Pet adult. I
was 6th Best Household Pet in the Southeast Region in 2010. My Mommy
had decided in December of 2009 she was to move to Toledo, Ohio. After
getting settled in, she brought me here as well. Amazing….I ended up back
in the same city I was rescued from! I need just one more win to get the
highest title ever for a show cat and that is a Lifetime Achievement (LA).
My Mommy decided this year was the year to try for it. I have one more cat
show to go to yet this show season which is April 29-30, May 1, 2011 in
New Port Richey, Florida. I am sitting at 28th International Household Pet
right now and we only award top 25 so I am hoping I can shine and get the
points I need to get another International win as an adult. I am so lucky that
there is a shelter like Paws and Whiskers out there that helped me out and
took care of me until I found my forever home. I am my Mom’s soul mate
and she can’t thank PAWS enough for the awesome work they do!
Well the results are in and I was able to pick up seven places in Florida so I
finished the judging year as 21st best International Household Pet. Not

Hi guys! I just wanted to give a quick first night update and a funny story on "Ralph" who is
now named Kittysaurus Rex (Rex for short). I got him home and put him in my bathroom for
quarantine when he accidently slipped out and ran into the kitchen. He went straight for the
litter box but didn't realize Gremlin, my other cat, was in it already so they both ended up in the box. Needless to
say chaos ensued until I got him back in the bathroom. Holly Bailey, He's doing great so far though. Gave him a
bath tonight (With me standing in the tub and my husband holding him outside the tub...bathing coons are a ton
of fun. Lol) and now he's just relaxing and adjusting. I wanted to say thank you again. He's exactly what I was
looking for and will be a wonderful way to complete our family.

Hello, I just wanted to let you know what a wonderful addition to our family Chico has
been. He seems to really like it here and we love him! My husband has never spoiled a cat
as much as this one. I have noticed that he has even started to lose weight now that he runs around the house all
day lol. I love it when he sits on my lap and wants his belly scratched with his legs up in the air. I've never seen a
cat like his belly rubbed so i think it’s kind of funny. Well thanks again for a wonderful kitty. He has found his
perfect home! We kept the name Chico. I thought it sounded good with our last name Luna. I haven't noticed
anything unusual with potty habits. I have started giving him soft food for urinary tract problems. Like i said he is
very spoiled. He still isn't very fond of our dog but he tolerates her. You are correct, he is a great cat. Thanks
again. Megan .

Just a note to let you know how much I enjoyed the visit to Paws and Whiskers on
Sunday. Timing was perfect since my daughter was visiting from Arizona. She is
a vet tech there so I enjoyed her input. She was pleased to meet the kitties and
could tell they were “stress free” and enjoying the environment. Keep up the good work! Joan

Toledo Texas Hold’em
Championship
After six years of hosting the Toledo
Texas Hold’em Championship each
November, we have had to discontinue the event due to a variety of reasons. We felt that over the years we
put on a good event; however, attendance had declined to the point where
we could no longer offer a prize fund
that would bring players in the door.
Online poker and the poker parlors
that opened in Michigan were just too
much to compete with. We thank our
two event sponsors for their support
over the years. Buckeye Cablesystem
and Sylvania Vet were essential in the
success of the events

Recent research completed at the Waltham Center in the United Kingdom has
revealed that cats choose from available diets that which most closely meets an
innate, instinctive preference for specific energy sources proportions. In addition,
these instinctive preferences adjust according to the Lifestage of the cat. The proportion of energy sources for early kittenhood is different from adolescence, as well as adulthood. This
new research result is called Macro Nutrient Profile (MNP). It encapsulates vital considerations such as
nutritional and physiological needs, digestibility, and palatability. The research concentrated on wet diets
for cats. The terms "macro nutrient profile" defines those
nutrients that are present in large quantities, and that yield
energy. Energy can come from protein, fat and carbohydrates. The proportion of the energy amounts from each
of these macronutrient sources preferred, changes as the
cat grows and matures. Animal nutritionists have long
recognized that taste is not a strong consideration in palatability preferences in cats. Compared to humans who
have 9,000 taste buds, and dogs who have 1,700, cats
trail a distant third with only 500 taste buds! Instead of
taste, other factors such as food texture and temperature,
kibble size and shape (mouth feel) and the smell of the
food are more important to the cat. Cat breeders can
readily acknowledge that when cats can't smell well due
to upper respiratory infections, they tend to be anorexic.
When their noses are cleared of the discharge and occlusion, their appetite improves. This strong reliance on smell also explains why cats prefer to have food that is at least at room temperature as the
warmer temperatures improve the aromatic effect. Palatability can be a tricky science with cats, as many
will eagerly eat new canned products when offered. Understandably, the owners draw conclusions that
this ready acceptance of new foods or flavors supports a desire for variety. That premise is wrong. The
Waltham research clearly demonstrated that over time, cats will preferentially eat a diet that most closely
matches their instinctive nutritional needs, even if that diet is flavored with a taste and smell that they
ordinarily find unattractive. It further revealed that the appropriate MNP ensures long-term preference,
virtually removing the risk of monotony of particular food, clearly showing that there is no need for variety.
In effect, MNP completes the other factors of palatability. During the Waltham research, cats were offered three diets, each of which had different proportions of energy from protein and fat and different
aromas. The flavor utilized as unattractive was orange. The orange flavored food had 70% of the total
energy from protein, the remaining 30% from fat. The second diet had a rabbit aroma with 40% energy
from protein and 60% from fat. The third diet had a fish aroma and only 10% of the energy from protein,
and 90% from fat. Initially, most of the cats chose the fish-flavored food ( high in fat, low in protein), while
rejecting the rabbit and orange flavored foods (both of which had higher protein and lower fat energy).
Over the course of 38 days, almost all of the cats were eating the higher protein, lower fat diet, even
though it was the orange-flavored food! That is obviously an extremely simplified overview, but the results are the same. These findings can help explain why cats may initially eat a new canned diet only to
turn up their noses at it later. The nutritional profile, more specifically the macro nutrient profile, was not
meeting their long-term needs. Continued to page 10

In case you are not familiar with
Humane Ohio, they operate a lowcost spay/neuter clinic, at 3131
Tremainsville, Toledo, OH 43613,
to serve pet owners, feral cat caretakers, animal shelters and rescue
groups. More information is available at www.humaneohio.org or call
Humane Ohio at 419-266-5607 to
make an appointment or borrow a
humane trap. By working together
to spay/neuter the strays and
owned cats, we can reduce the
number of unwanted cats in the
area that are surrendered to area
shelters and rescue groups each
year.

Paws and Whiskers
Well, my charge was
Mindy
On February
24th I was
rescued from a
small box in a
parking lot by a
PAWS employee who found
me abandoned
there. I am a
beautiful Classic Tabby who is looking for a good forever home where I can run and play and
not have to worry about ending up in a
box in another parking lot. I love to play
and I love water. When I am let out of
my cage I love sitting in the sink trying to
get a drink out of the faucet. I would
really prefer to be an only cat. Do you
have a soft pillow where I can spend my
days curled up relaxing?
I had a happy home for
eight years with a family
who loved me very much. But I was
being a bad girl. See what happened is
my family decided to have a baby and I
didn’t like that idea too much. Well I
wasn’t being very nice and they tried
working with me but I wasn’t going to
change. I think I learned my lesson now.
So would you like to give a pretty little
girl like me a home forever?
EMMA
All of the cats pictured here
owe their second chance to
you and your donations which
allow PAWS the luxury of being
able to take care of them until a
new forever home is found.
Paloma grand theft auto. I was
picked up by Toledo police trying to break into a
car in East Toledo. Those
silly police thought I was
pregnant and rushed me
here to Paws and Whiskers
to get help. Well I did
need help but my babies
were hundreds of little
crawly things. I had a wound that the flies were attracted to and was being eaten alive. PAWS employees rushed me to the hospital where wounds were
cared for. Now I am all better and need a safe home
with someone who will keep me inside.
I was living with my mom and my
Jordon sister on the east side of Toledo.
One cold day in January, mom’s owner
moved out and just left us all alone to fend for
ourselves. Some nice neighbors took us in
and kept us fed and warm until they could
arrange for us to come here to PAWS. Mom
was so nice the people kept her but my sister
and I were a little too much to handle. We
were brought here to PAWS and I found a
home in Feb 2007. I had that home until June
of 2009 when my owner moved and did not
make arrangements for me to go too. Now I
am back here looking for a good home where
I can run and play and have all kinds of fun.
Wouldn’t you like a handsome guy like me
brightening up your house?

I was born

the Monroe

area. I came
to PAWS
A N D
WHISKERS along with three littermates. I was
adopted in March of ’03 and had a happy home for
seven years. Then one day someone in the house
developed allergies and I was brought back here. I
am not too happy about being stuck in this cage and
really looking hard for the right person to come along
to give me a chance.
I

m u c h .
Well,
I
guess the new furniture was better but I didn’t like it
so I kind of scratched the side. Nothing noticeable
but they were not happy with me. So here I am again
at PAWS looking for a new home. I am a sweet girl
who needs someone that will give me lots of love
and attention. Could you be my new forever home?
I was abandoned on a cold January afternoon
in 2004. I was left at the corner of Airport and
Wyman Road in a large carrier. A kind soul
saw my dilemma and brought me here to
Paws and Whiskers. I was spayed, had a
dental and got groomed. I was a beautiful girl
but it took me almost a year to be adopted. I
had a happy home for five years until my
caregiver decided to move and did not want
to take me with her. Now I am middle aged
and sitting in a cage rather than ruling my
own home. I am still a beautiful girl but I display an attitude here at the shelter. I would
be different with my own home to run. Could I
be your feline friend and cuddle up with you
at night?

Paws and Whiskers
Misty and Bailey were found
by a little girl that was staying
with her grandmother. They were taken in and given a good home. However, after the
granddaughter returned home, the pair proved to be too
much for the grandmother. She reluctantly gave them up
to Paws and Whiskers. They were adopted from PAWS in
2003 and had a happy home for seven years. Then
someone developed allergies and they were returned to
Paws and Whiskers. They were both so upset at the
change of routine that they stopped eating. They both
had to be hospitalized when they developed fatty liver
disease from not eating and lost a lot of weight. They
were in the hospital for almost two weeks, on I V fluids and being tube fed. After they saw they were still
getting a lot of love and attention, both started eating
again. They are both ok now and waiting for a new
family to love them. They are both very loving playful
little girls who would make a great playmate since
they have been together all of their lives.
Misty & Bailey
Mom Kitty My mom moved out and left me with my dad who is blind and could not
take care of me and my two housemates. I’ll respond to my name with
a soft meow. I love my ears scratched and my whole back stroked but don’t pet my hindquarters too long. I love lap time and
will stay forever. I like wet food in the
morning and dry food through the day.
My dad loved me very much and cried
when I left. After I came here to
PAWS, I was adopted right away and
had a home for two years. Then my
owner moved and didn't make arrangements to take me too. Now I
am back here looking for a new
loving home. I hope you will love
me like my first dad did.

RETURNED FEBRUARY 24TH, 2009
I was found with my four kittens on the west side of Toledo in 2002. We
were all brought here to Paws and Whiskers where my kittens all found homes. I sat here
for almost a year wishing for a good home. I was adopted in April, 2003 and had a happy
home for seven years. Then in 2009
my guardian lost his house and had to
move into a homeless shelter and could
no longer keep me. I was returned here
in February, 2009. I am a bit skittish but
will warm up to you if you are patient
with me. I love to be brushed and enjoy
a good hit of catnip now and then.
Couldn’t you find it in your heart to give
a new forever home to a beautiful displaced feline like me?
Guinevere
I came to PAWS in 2004 as a
kitten from a stray litter. I did not
sit here long just because of my cuteness. (As you
can see from baby picture to the right) I was adopted to a
wo nd er f ul
home. But
to my surprise I was
brought
back due to
f a m i l y
emergencies. I was
then adopted again
and stayed
for two years but they had to move because of a
job and couldn’t take me with them. I again got a
new home for a few months but that didn’t work. I
am really tired of being a Yo Yo and need a home
where I can live out the rest of my life in sunbeams
I
was
Gabby d u m p e d
in a box at Trilby
Animal Hospital with
three littermates
when I was just a
couple of days old. I
don’t know how long
we were outside in
that cold box with no mother to keep us warm and
no food. The good people at Trilby Animal Hospital
rescued us and we came here to Paws and Whiskers. I was adopted in 2002. I had a wonderful
home for eight years until my guardian felt she
could no longer afford me. I offered to cut back on
the catnip and use the litter for a second day but
she didn’t think that would be enough. I was
brought back here to Paws and Whiskers in hopes of
finding a new guardian to love me. I am a special
needs kitty as I need insulin twice a day. Here I am
ready to love!! All I need is for you to open up your
heart and give me a chance to win you over?

A “Volunteer Coordinator” is urgently needed. Volunteers
make our special events happen. Without volunteers PAWS can
not continue. Without someone to coordinate our volunteer activity and keep volunteers interested
we will lose the volunteers that do step up. Volunteer your time one day a week from 8:00 AM to
Noon, you can save the shelter $1,424.80 a year. In addition, volunteers would help us increase
weekly adoption events and help us increase donations. Have telephone skills? Don’t mind making
calls to businesses soliciting donations for our events? Your talents are desperately needed. We are
setting up adoption events for the summer. We have our numerous adoption dates at The Andersons covered but we would like to include events at Pet Supplies Plus stores but we need more
people to step up. The TICA cat show in February is always a big event with numerous volunteers
always needed. The Elder Beerman Community Days is coming again in November and we will
need ticket sellers. Concession stand help at Mud Hens games is needed and the dates are listed
in a chart on page 5. The Cool Cat Strut, on October 21st, will be needing volunteers to help plan
and decorate. Our second annual “Feline Frenzy” Cat
Walk will be taking place on August 28th and help will
be needed the day of the event for set-up. We
provide everything a volunteer needs and no special
skills are required. Please consider filling out the
volunteer application above and return it to the
shelter. You can also volunteer by calling the shelter
at 419-536-1914 or by going online and emailing us
at [email protected]. Krafting for Kitties

setting up displays. Crafting items to sell at these
events is also needed and you can work at home. Contact Pam Plunkett at [email protected] for
information on the crafters. The continuation of Paws and Whiskers depends on volunteers and
the success of these events. Both help greatly with the shelter’s bottom line and lessens our
dependence on donations.

Paws and Whiskers
Hi there!! Little Fred here - just wanted to let you know that I've
lived a very very spoiled life with the Big Guy and Pam. Fourteen
years ago, on April
1st, my siblings and I were abandoned little babies in Wildwood Park - a kind stranger brought us to the shelter and
the Big Guy took us home to foster. Well, the rest was
history - We didn't have to try very hard before the humans
were hooked and wrapped around our furry tails and at our
beck and call! Midnight feedings, morning feedings, heck feedings any time of the day. They thought I didn't like that
bottle they kept trying to put in my mouth but I was just
being ornery and they loved me anyways! Two of my siblings went to live with a very nice family in the Toledo area
and my brother (Teddie Bear) stayed with me in the Plunkett household. Teddie has always been very shy, and I was the wild one -- sneaking outside in the backyard underneath both of my dogs’ bodies (Bandit and Jasmine were paid well for my escape antics with
dog treats - when my humans went away for the day – I knew where those treats were stashed!). I remember laughing big kitty-laughs when my human mom groped around in the bushes at 4:00 in the morning because once again I had escaped to the yard! I never went far - just far enough so she couldn't see
me in the dark and I'd have a little laugh and then come back and "let" her catch me. When Princess (my
last dog) came to live with us, I was either too tired to sneak out or maybe Princess was told to watch me
more closely. And the dog treats were moved to a new location which I never did figure out! ….But I did
love it when mom was outside working in the yard and she would put me in this huge cage in the shade
and I could chew on grass and try to entice other animals to come and visit. (I had my eye on a cute squirrel!) She never left me outside very long - 1/2 hour at the most and always in the shade. I sure loved the
summer! I was always being sneaky! I remember one time I got up onto the refrigerator, pushed up a
ceiling tile, crawled up into the ceiling, then fell down into the wall. I sat there and meowed until mom heard
me. The Big Guy had to tear a big hole in the wall to get me out. Both my human parents had special
songs they would sing to me -- just ask them and I bet they would sing you a tune. I would jump
up on the Big Guy (after walking around his chair my usual
three times) and meow as he sung to me - he thought I was
singing in harmony with him, but I knew if I meowed my loudest (and of course with the cutest tiger face you can imagine) I
would get tons of pets and treats! Little Fred Rules! Ahhh what a wonderful kitty life I've had……….. Oh look - there is
Jasmine, Bandit, Big Fred (I was named after him), Muffin,
Cookie, Beach Ball (to name a few) that crossed over before
me, and a whole lot of my humans’ friends too……………..
Over and out from Little Fred - I'll catch you on the other side!
My Special Friend
In Memory of our beloved, Special Friend, “Little Fred”- he crossed over April 24, 2011.

Lori Hoodlebrink
Lori Hoodlebrink, died Friday, April
15, 2011. Lori began volunteering
with Paws and Whiskers in the late
1990s helping out at weekend adoption events and other events such as
the Old West End Festival. When
Lori’s work schedule became such
that she could not help as often, she
became a major donor to the shelter.
Lori had to cut back on her involvement a couple of years ago because
of personal problems but continued
to stay in contact. Lori was a Registered Pharmacist who was known to
many over her 23 years at the Kmart
pharmacy on Navarre Avenue in
Oregon, OH. Lori had a deep affection for all our feline friends and will
be helping the ones that have previously passed on the other side of the
Rainbow Bridge. Lori’s passing is a
big loss to the shelter family.
I was sooo very sorry to hear
about Kevin. He was such a trooper and a very kind and caring person. I pray that he is at peace now.
He was so deserving of more than
what he had to go through. May
God watch over him. Sue Byers
Farewell to a Friend
Paws and Whiskers lost a good friend
on March 5th, 2011 Beverly J.
Wright died, in her home, after an
lengthy illness. Bev was a good
friend to Paws and Whiskers and will
be greatly missed. In 1999 she
opened Bev's Cat Boutique, where
she and her sister, Bonnie, also,
rescued, fostered and adopted cats.
In doing so she became the resource person for many. Because of
her involvement in Cat Shows, her
boutique, and animal rescue, she
was able to assist PAWS on many
occasions. Bev was laid to rest at
Ottawa Hills Memorial Park along
with her beloved cat, Garth.

Krafters Korner
Continued from page 4 The
younger kittens have a instinctive preference for a diet that has a higher percentage
of energy from fats. This makes sense as they have a higher energy demand with rapid growth and maturing
nervous system. Fats yield over two and a half more energy per gram than either protein or carbohydrates.
The diet that matches this MNP is more energy dense, meaning the kittens can eat less volume and still meet
their energy needs. For tiny stomachs and immature digestive systems, this makes a big difference.
Then as the kitten goes into adolescence, their instinctive needs gradually shift to a more equal proportion of
protein to fat energy. Their growth rate has slowed down, and while their energy needs are still higher than
needed for adults, it is not as demanding as early kittenhood. When the kitten has transitioned fully to adulthood, its nutritional needs shift again to the higher protein energy, lower fat energy proportion diets. Adult
cats have a very efficient digestive process from which they harvest energy from protein preferentially. An
added value to wet diets is meeting the needs of very young and older cats, who have tender mouths or
teeth. Kittens as young as four weeks just starting to wean will prefer a soft textured food. Older, senior, cats
frequently deal with sore mouth or dental issues making a dry diet difficult. There is no advantage nutritionally
to a wet food over a dry diet, or vice versa. It largely depends on the individual cat's needs, be that from age,
health considerations, or just preference. It helps to have a cat that will eat either wet or dry foods in case a
situation arises in which they need a diet that is only available in one form. Ongoing research will continue to
identify and explore the special needs of cats. by Bretaigne Jones, DVM
Memorial Gifts
When you need to make a gift in memory of someone or need a gift
for that hard - to - buy for relative or friend, please consider a gift “In
Memory Of” or “In Honor Of” to Paws and Whiskers. When you make a memorial gift to Paws and Whiskers in
honor of a loved one, friend, or furry companion, the gift is recognized in several ways: it’s listed in the next
copy of the newsletter, a card is sent to the family acknowledging your gift, you receive a handwritten thank
you for your donation, the memorial gift is placed on the Paws and Whiskers web site, and if the memorial is in
honor of a pet that has passed, the next cat coming into the shelter is named in honor of your companion.

Ways You Can Help PAWS
There are a number of ways you can earn money to help Paws and Whiskers by going about your day-to-day routines. Below you will find a number of fundraising ideas you can use, some of which, will not cost you any
extra money while some will help PAWS while you get something you would be purchasing normally:
On the reverse side is a Paws and Whiskers Events Calendar
You can attach this paper to your refrigerator or home bulletin board for easy reference when looking for
someplace to shop or a family activity to attend.
1. Use GoodSearch.COM to search the internet and GoodShop to make online purchases.
GoodSearch.com is the search engine with a unique social mission. It’s powered by Yahoo!, so you get the same great search
results, but each time you do a search, GoodSearch makes a donation to PAWS! 50% of advertising revenue goes to the nonprofits selected by our users. GoodShop.com is an online marketplace that donates a percentage of your online purchase to the
charity of your choice. You can choose from hundreds of popular online merchants and the experience of shopping through
GoodShop is the same as going to the retailer directly. Send an email to friends asking them to help PAWS. Here is a sample
you can customize: http://www.goodsearch.com/GetInvolved.aspx#supporters, Make GoodSearch the homepage on all of your computers: http://www.goodsearch.com/
GetInvolved.aspx#homepage, Download the GoodSearch toolbar onto all of your computers: http://www.goodsearch.com/toolbars.aspx. In two years PAWS has earned
$116.27 from Good Search. This option has the possibility of earning much more if we could get our members to use Good Search on a regular basis.
2. You can show your support for Paws and Whiskers all year long while doing something you normally do anyway.........Shop!!!! Holiday shopping,
birthday shopping, back to school shopping, or just shopping for the fun of it. Whenever the shopping bug bites you, you can make a donation to
Paws and Whiskers while stocking up on those things you normally purchase. Just log onto http://www.igive.com/, Do your shopping online, and
PAWS will receive a percentage of every purchase made through this website. Getting started is easy. Just go to http://www.igive.com/ and sign up
for a free membership, Then choose Paws and Whiskers as your charity and start shopping at any of their 680 popular stores. Since June of 1996, we
have earned $527.00 and this number will increase with more participation.
3. To earn money for PAWS go to www.krogercommunityrewards.com and register your Kroger “Plus Card” to Paws and Whiskers using the
code 84468. IF YOU HAVE PREVIOUSLY REGISTERED YOU MUST RE-REGISTER EVERY APRIL. If you go to the
www.pawsandwhiskers.org “How You Can Help” page, there is a step by step guide for registering or re-registering. If you don’t have a
Kroger Plus Card, you can pick one up at any Kroger customer service counter. If you do not have access to the online sign-up method,
you can call the shelter and we will try to register you. If you have a plus card but normally enter your phone number at the register, you can
call 877-576-7587 and they will give you your “Plus Card” number so you can register. After you register, each time you shop at Kroger and swipe your “Plus Card”, Paws and
Whiskers will get a percentage of your purchase. PAWS has received $2,247.71 during the first year of our participation. This is a good inexpensive way to help Paws and Whiskers.
If you have any difficulty registering online, you can call the shelter and we will assist you in getting re-registered.
4.. Paws and Whiskers and our feline friends need your used printer cartridges, cell phones, and MP3 players so we can recycle
them for cash. Most cartridges earn us between $.50 to $2.00 each while laser cartridges bring from $1.00 to $12.00 each. We
can also recycle unused cartridges that you no longer need. Unused cartridges bring us twice as much as used ones.
Contributions of used cartridges continue at a steady pace. Do you know others who utilize inkjet cartridges? Have them save cartridges for us too. Used cartridges and phones
can be dropped off at the shelter seven days a week. Since 2004 PAWS has earned $3,578.50 with $439.50 of it coming in 2010.
5. Every time a FanClubCard.com membership is purchased, a minimum of $10 is donated to one of the local charities, non-profits or community groups
listed on their website. If you were directed to their site by your favorite charity or group, please enter their name or registration code in the appropriate
box when you purchase your membership card. To purchase a FanClubCard, simply click on the "Get the Card" tab located at the top of their home
page. The FanClubCard.com team will make sure the donation is received by the proper organization promptly. When you purchase a FanClubCard
three major things happen: You get terrific deals for 1 year, local merchants receive more business and a local organization gets a donation. Paws and
Whiskers only signed up in early January and we have already made $100.00.
6. Elder Beerman holds their “Community Days” sale twice a year. The next one will be in November. For “Community Days”, non-profits
sell special coupon books good for any item in the store and to supporters. The non-profit gets 100% of the proceed from any coupon
books that they sell. In addition the organizations that sell the most books get a portion of the store sales for the day of the event. If you
would like coupon books to sell or want to help sell books for the Spring Community Days at Elder Beerman, contact the shelter or Joan Baughman at 419-531-7964 to help. This
has always been very profitable for Paws and Whiskers.
7. Our Krafting for Kitties group makes craft items to sell at events, such as cat shows, and all the proceeds go to PAWS. If you could
help out crafting items, donating finished crafts, or donating material for the crafters to use, PAWS will benefit. Also money will go to the
shelter when you attend events and purchase items created by our “Krafting For Kitties” group. You will then have a beautiful item for a
gift, to decorate your home, or make life more comfortable for your feline friend at home. Check out the upcoming events’ schedule for
locations the crafters will be setting up.
10. BAGOLITAS®, has been creating unique, spunky, USA-made fabric handbags since 2005 along with a variety of home furnishings products.
Their bags and Boutique products are distinctive and make trendy and chic gifts. Paws and Whiskers has been set up with a URL (http://
www.bagolitas.com/pawsandwhiskers) and any purchases made through this site will earn PAWS 15% of the sale. You can also find an Independent Sales Consultant near you and learn about hosting a Bagolitas Handbag Party to earn money for PAWS. Give the website a try. You may find something you like or a gift
for someone else. Emma has already checked it out and has her eye on several items.
