Paws for Love Foundation
Has it really been 17
years since Paws for
Love hung its first
paintings, created by
homeless pets, in an
empty building in
Healdsburg? Indeed
it has! The “Paws for
Love” annual fundraising gala in
February marked our
17th year in raising
funds to save homeless and forgotten
pets. Our animal
loving guests sipped
the fine wines
generously donated
by Mutt Lynch,
Pedroncelli, and
Iron Horse – and this
year we added
champagne by
Korbel. Talented DJ
Aaron Long and
guitarist Ricky Ray
entertained the crowd
with music throughout the evening, as
the artfully created
appetizers prepared
by Ulrike Steinke
and her volunteers
were passed among
the guests. Senior
dogs from the
Sonoma Co. Animal
Shelter and Green
Dog Rescue made a
poignant entrance on
the red carpet,
dancing and prancing
to Leo Sayer’s “You
Make me Feel Like
Dancing!” Decked out
in shiny silver
bandanas, they
mingled and charmed
the guests, offering
kisses, a “shake paw”,
smiles and wags. At
least one found a
perfect new “forever
home.”
Our live auction kicked
off with a silly “Heads
or Tails” bidding game
as Auctioneer Skip
Domingos warmed up
the crowd to compete
for trips, wine, and a
custom “wine barrel”
dog bed. Raffle tickets
sold briskly throughout
the evening when the
“Calendar Girls” joined
our topnotch raffle
team! And, as always,
our amazing collection
of original “art by
shelter pets” sold out!
Spring has arrived, and
with it comes the
familiar issue of
unwanted pregnant
mama dogs and cats and orphaned little
ones - in addition to
the many injured, sick
and forgotten pets
being cared for by
shelters and rescues.
Since our February
“Paws for Love” fund-
raiser, we have been
providing financial
relief to as many
needy pets as
possible. Puppy and
kitten rescue
programs, cancer
treatments, surgeries,
senior pet adoption
fees, and spay and
neuter clinics are just
a few of the urgent
needs we have funded
in these first months of
the year.
You may support us
by attending our
summer events, and if
you would like your
pet to create a
masterpiece just for
you, check out our
schedule in this issue.
Let’s dip the paws in
the paint, create great
art, and help homeless
pets at the same time!

a silly saying…I never

TALE OF TWO KITTIES
By Peggy Roberts
The worst of times become best of
times when two kitties find their
home.
Ida was a semi-feral about one
year old. Having recently given birth
to a litter, she was starving and knew
she needed help. Hanging out in the
picnic area seemed like a good idea
at a major wine country locale.
Surely somebody would share a
morsel or two? She turned on the
charm and zeroed in on the person
most likely to adopt her: me. Skinny
and with fleas and worms, she was
getting desperate. Before long, she
had me hooked.
I bought cat food and fed her for a
few days. I set up an appointment
with my veterinarian and took my cat
carrier to work. She was pretty easy
to catch but rather hard to hold on to
- I had the scratches to prove it. She
seemed perfectly happy spending
the afternoon in my office safely
inside the cat carrier with food and
water.
Within a couple of weeks I
realized her excessive drinking and
eating were not because she had
been homeless and starving. Test
results showed she was diabetic.
Now spayed, flea and worm free,
and receiving insulin, Ida and I
settled into our life with three other
cats.
I knew nothing of her origins. It
was obvious, though, she had been
mistreated. She would run when
she saw a broom or when I came
near while she was eating or
drinking. She still hates the broom
but no longer runs when I come near
her while she eats.
She is the last one of the four cats
who accompanied me on the long
journey from California to Nebraska.
Unfortunately the new house
frightened her and she managed to
bolt into the heater duct8where she

Inventions.
remained for a couple of days until
I disassembled the cover on
another wall and pulled her out!
Apparently she was literally stuck - and once again needed to be
rescued.
She is fourteen now and
showing signs of declining health.
I know the time is coming when I
will not be able to rescue her
again. In the meantime, I will give
her all the love and care she
needs. As long as she is
comfortable and not in pain, she
will remain my sweet Baby Girl Ida.

Kitty Kitty and Lucky lived in the
middle of Nebraska with their
elderly companion. Sadly their
mom became ill, eventually
passing away after several months
in the hospital. The woman’s adult
son would stop by the house and
feed the two cats each day –
where they remained alone. He
did not take the time to comfort
them or help them through their
grief.
Winter was approaching and the
situation was becoming urgent.
The two cats needed to be
relocated or turned over to the
local shelter. The shelter made it
clear the cats would not be
sheltered there for long due to
overcrowding.
The woman’s daughter works for
the City where I work. The human
resources director knew I was
some level of “crazy cat woman”
so asked my advice on how to find
a home for two adult cats.
I could not consider adopting
Lucky, an orange male, as I
already have “OCD” Stanley. One
cat with Orange Cat Disorder is all
I can handle! But I knew Kitty Kitty
had a slim chance of surviving
unless I took her.
She had developed a neurotic
habit of licking herself until she was
soaking wet. And there was
something odd about her eye. I
realized she is totally blind in one
eye. My veterinarian said the
blindness was probably caused by
an injury when she was young -- the
blind eye is smaller. He shaved her
tummy and found a spay scar, and
luckily she didn’t have to go through
the trauma of surgery.
She no longer licks herself. She
loves to sleep on my head, but will
politely wait her turn if that space is
already occupied. She is a pure
sweetheart, but also a bit feisty.
Kitty Kitty did not seem like much
of a name, so I renamed her “Lila.”
One day when she was really
romping around the room with toys, I
told her she was “full of beans.” Now
she is Lila Beans.

This is a short tale of two rescued
cats. Each rescued animal has their
own story. And each rescued
animal knows they were fortunate to
find a home. A rescued animal is a
gift we can give ourselves too. The
love they have to offer is priceless.
When you have room in your heart
and home, consider adopting an
animal who needs a little rescuing
and a lot of TLC.
** Footnote: Lucky was adopted by a
piano teacher and loves the young
students – and is totally fascinated by the
metronome!

HOW YOU CAN HELP!
Paws for Love provides a vital safety net for shelter
and rescue animals who desperately need assistance in
finding a permanent home - whether it be an injured
homeless pet who needs surgery, reimbursement of
adoption fees for seniors, or other rescue-related
expenses. Many of these pets would perish without the
funding we provide. They come to us frightened,
traumatized, and homeless through no fault of their own.
We believe they deserve a second chance.
Our annual February gala is only one of our
fundraising efforts - throughout the year we participate in
smaller events, and with your support we can do even
more: fund more surgeries, expand our senior-to-senior
adoption program, save the lives of more pets! YOU may

Meet Rainbow, a 6-8 year old, six
pound Chihuahua mix. This little girl
had no chance of adoption at the
shelter mainly because she was a
black, senior, pregnant Chihuahua
with major medical problems. Rainbow
arrived with both of her eyes injured –
Northtown Animal Hospital was able to save one of her eyes.
During her five day hospitalization she spiked a high fever as a
result of infections and general poor health. Sadly, her pups did
not survive. However, Rainbow has thrived and is becoming a
wonderful little dog full of grateful kisses! She is happy, healthy,
and ready for someone to make her new life complete. It's time
for us to find a family that is just as special as our Rainbow. She
is fully vaccinated, wormed, HW tested, treated for fleas/ticks,
and current on Heartworm preventative. She will be altered and
receive a full dental cleaning in the next week or two.
Rainbow qualifies for the “Senior Paws for Love” program -someone over 55 applying to adopt her can get the adoption
covered by this wonderful program. Please email
