Agudas Achim's history is deeply rooted in the Columbus Jewish Community, and throughout the past 123 years, its leaders have played a pivotal role in both Jewish and secular community development - in Columbus and beyond. HISTORY OF THE CONGREGATION Congregation Agudas Achim has had a varied and interesting history. The chronicle of any organization — just as the life story of an individual — has its own personality, character, growth, decline and rebirth: in short, the whole gamut of development. From its inception in the early 1880’s to the present, it has proven to be not only the oldest traditional synagogue in Columbus, but also a launching point for leadership around the Columbus Jewish - and secular - community. Rabbi Kalmon Ephraim London circa. 1890 The founding members of the congregation were Eastern FIRST RABBI OF AGUDAS ACHIM European Jews. They left the Old World in search of religious freedom and opportunity, and they found what they sought in Columbus. The first Jews arrived in Columbus in 1838, and in succeeding years their numbers increased. In 1881 the first traditional minyan was held in the home of Mr. Friedenberg on East Cherry Street, between Ninth and Washington Avenue. With the infusion of many new immigrants at the turn of the 20th century, the ranks of this Orthodox group expanded. In this fashion, the nucleus of the Agudas Achim, translated as Circle of Brothers, was formed. July 15, 1951 Rabbi’s & Officials from Agudas Achim and the Columbus Jewish Community in the “Old Shul” before attending the Consecration of the Cornerstone at the new synagogue in Bexley. Ten weeks later, on Selichot night, the congregation left downtown for good. The congregation moved next to a second location on South Fifth Street near Donaldson Street. After a short stay there, they moved in succession to South Fourth Street, near Mound, and then to a large home on Donaldson Street near Seventh. Finally, in 1895, the congregation purchased a building of its own at 464 South Fifth Street, which was the home of Agudas Achim until the move to the corner of Washington and Donaldson in the fall of 1907. The first Spiritual Leader of Congregation Agudas Achim was Kalmon Ephraim London, who replied to an advertisement in the Yiddish Press for the rabbinical position open in Columbus. He was elected and given a salary of three dollars per week. He served the congregation from 1881 until 1894. Rabbi London’s descendants remain active members of the congregation and the community, including the Yenkin, Wiener, Kanter and Zelkowitz families. In 1896 the congregation’s membership dues was twelve and one-half cents per week. Rabbis Artfield, Solomon, Levy, Joseph Rapenport, and Saul Silver served between the years of 1895 and 1907. Beginning in 1907, Rabbi I. Wiernikowsky became the head Rabbi, as the congregation moved into its new building at Washington and Donaldson. 6 1920 2nd grade Girls Sunday school class With the opening of the synagogue at Washington and Donaldson, an era of expansion for the Agudas Achim took place. From 1905 until the early 1920s, Jewish immigrants arrived in Columbus in great numbers, and the majority of them became affiliated with the Agudas Achim. By 1920, membership numbered close to four hundred families, and became one of the most active congregations in the Midwest. In 1913, Rabbi Morris N. Taxon, was elected Spiritual Leader of the congregation. He served with distinction until 1918 and was replaced by Rabbi Solomon Neches, who led the synagogue until 1922. Rabbi I. Wiernikowsky returned to the congregation from 1923 to 1931, at which time Rabbi Mordechai Hirschprung was selected to guide the congregation. He served from 1932 until 1948. In 1949, Rabbi Samuel W. Rubenstein became the Spiritual Leader of the congregation. Through his efforts, the congregation’s dream to relocate to the Bexley area became a reality, when ourcurrent facility was completed at Broad and Roosevelt in 1951. Rabbi Rubenstein served until 1982, at which time Rabbi Alan Ciner was selected to lead the congregation through the next era. Rabbi Ciner remained in that position until 2000, and in 2001 the congregation brought to Columbus its current Spiritual Leader, Rabbi Moshe Dick. 1951 Agudas Achim Leadership From the ranks of the congregation have come leaders in every worthwhile communal endeavor. No cause, no drive, no venture of a philanthropic, educational or cultured nature was ever undertaken or successfully concluded in the Columbus Jewish community without its quota of heartened and devoted Agudas Achim members who gave their energy, their time, and their funds to the advancement of the principles of Judaism. Today, the Agudas Achim maintains its role as a leader in Columbus Jewry, carrying a membership of over 600 families. Thanks in great part to the undying devotion of its amenable lay-leadership and outstanding staff, Congregation Agudas Achim will continue to uphold its tradition of excellence in all aspects of Jewish communal service. Our son, who’s eleven, loves him” - Kim & Farrel Golden “I’m a Dudu Fisher groupie” - Shirley Abrams “He was even invited by the owner of the Venetian in Las Vegas to perform for his birthday party.” - Ron Feerer From the great synagogue in Tel Aviv to the great stages of Tel Aviv, London and New York, Dudu Fisher has become an international superstar. As Mr. Fisher said in his successful, off-Broadway, one-man show, "Never on Friday," "He was a Jewish Jean Valjean." He played the starring role in Les Misérables around the world and took part in the "Royal Command Performance" for the Queen of England. As an observant Jew, Mr. Fisher was the first actor on Broadway and in the West End to be excused from performing on Friday nights, Saturday matinees and all Jewish holidays. Though Mr. Fisher has performed with the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra and the Queens and Baltimore Symphony orchestras, the London Symphony and for Britain's royal family, the Thai royal family and President Bill Clinton and Senator Hillary Clinton, he has never forgotten his roots. In addition to his brilliant renditions of Broadway music, he continues to perform traditional hassidic, yiddish and cantorial music to audiences all over the world. To sum up the talents of Mr. Fisher, we quote Lawrence Van Gelder of the "New-York times", "Mr. Fisher displays a talent that resists confinement and is an explosion of religious faith." We are truly fortunate to have an artist of Mr. Fisher’s stature participate in the dedication of our synagogue. May the music shared by the community on this special evening be a celebration of nearly 125 years of achievement, and in consideration of the next 125 years in the history of Congregation Agudas Achim. 12 With Renowned Composer Marvin Hamlisch With Chief Rabbi M.Y. Over time, ordinary objects take on the reminiscent quality of history. During the last 123 years, Congregation Agudas Achim has seen many changes. Lou never shied away from giving his time to the synagogue, earning him the unofficial title of Mr. Agudas Achim. A preview of the rotating collection is viewable during the Dedication Gala. Upon completion, the Archives Room will be available for perusal, research, and exploration by appointment only. Each phase of shul history is represented by a vast array of furniture and casework, photographs and documents, religious artifacts, plaques and memoriams, and those which have been maintained will be prominently displayed in the new Archives Room. This mini-Agudas Achim museum is located in the atrium, and will feature such historical gems as original bimah furniture, synagogue records, commemorative plaques, early twentieth century taleisim, tefillin, siddurim, and chumashim, and a host of photographs, featuring the generations of Congregation Agudas Achim. The room itself has been dedicated in honor of a leader among leaders in the congregation. Louis Goldfarb, who the congregation lost just this past winter, epitomized the history and traditions of Agudas Achim. A member of Agudas Achim for 75 years, Lou served as President of the congregation in 1955, and subsequently served as Vice-Chairman and then Chairman of the Board of Trustees. Over the years, he also served as Chair of the Chevra Kadisha, the Cantorial Committee, the Rabbinical Committee, the House Committee, and the Ritual Committee. Perhaps more importantly, Agudas Achim Archives Room Dedicated in Honor of Louis Goldfarb “Mr. Agudas Achim” Past President Past Chairman of the Board Past Chairman of the Chevra Kadisha 14 The History of Minyannaires Instituted as a Tallis & Tefillin Club by Rabbi Samuel W. Rubenstein in the 1950’s, Minyannaires has endured as one of the most time-tested programs in Agudas Achim history. On Friday morning, September 26 the congregation’s temporary home within the old “Once Upon A Child” became the starting-point for a momentous occasion: a Torah Parade down Broad Street to our beautiful, new synagogue. At 8:00am, a joyful group of congregants marched and sang their way to the corner of Roosevelt and Broad, where they entered the synagogue carrying the Sifrei Torah under a canopy of tallesim. Later that evening and over the next several weeks, hundreds of people from all around the community walked into Agudas Achim Synagogue as if for the very first time. The response, from members and non-members alike, has been amazement and awe. “It’s like a whole new building,” is a phrase often heard within the new walls of Agudas Achim. Throughout Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, and Sukkot — and in the time since the holidays — the community has responded enthusiastically to the warmth and beauty of the new sanctuary, chapel, social hall, memorial hall, atrium, kitchen, classrooms, and offices. In an astoundingly short period of time, a whole new facility has been unveiled, making complete the Building Committee’s mission to renovate and expand Agudas Achim Synagogue. 22 23 MAZEL TOV TO THE AGUDAS ACHIM COMMUNITY FROM STRENGTH TO STRENGTH FROM GENERATION TO GENERATION Bernard & Florine Ruben David & Marcy Margolis and Family Harlan Ruben and Family Molly & Larry Ruben and Family 24 MAZEL TOV, CONGREGATION AGUDAS ACHIM LOOKING FORWARD TO CONTINUED SUCCESS YOUR FRIENDS AT SAFE AUTO INSURANCE 25 26 THE AGUDAS ACHIM BROTHERHOOD IS PROUD OF OUR CONTRIBUTIONS TO CONGREGATION AGUDAS ACHIM IN THE PAST.
