Quilt Visions Launches Executive Director Fund Campaign
“To accomplish great things, we must not only act, but also dream; not only plan, but also believe.”
—Anatole France
Q
uilt Visions 2008 broke all
attendance records at the
Oceanside Museum of Art. Our
Gallery exhibitions have introduced a
new generation of art enthusiasts to
the beauty of the Quilt as Art. Quilt
Visions is celebrating the anniversary
of two exciting years with the Visions
Art Quilt Gallery, a fulfillment of the
dreams of you, its supporters and
founders, of a permanent home for our
organization. The Gallery has become
a destination for visitors from our city,
our state, and the world to view great
art and learn about the talented artists
who create it.
Quilt Visions is approaching another
milestone. The continued increase in
memberships,gallerysalesanddonations
demonstrate your appreciation for
what we have accomplished. Until
now we have relied completely on
our volunteer board and dedicated
volunteers to run the organization, its
exhibitions and programs. In order to
continue to grow and maintain our
professional reputation we need to hire
a full-time Executive Director with
experience managing a non-profit arts
organization. The Executive Director

will provide development and fund
raising expertise, assist with curatorial
and exhibition planning, coordinate
volunteer talent, manage marketing,
public relations and retail operations,
and develop partnerships with the
community. This milestone of hiring
an Executive Director is the driving
force of our 2009-2010 fund raising
campaign.
Your monetary support as well as
your sweat equity for the community
build resulted in our beautiful Gallery.
To accomplish the Executive Director
milestone, we are again turning to our
members as people committed to our
mission to promote the quilt as art. To
kick-off this fund raising campaign an
enthusiastic Quilt Visions supporter
has agreed to match dollar for dollar
each donation up to the first $20,000.
We are asking each of you to support
this fund drive for the next milestone
and to sustain our dreams for Quilt
Visions.
Our work will not be done once we
meet this new goal. We will, as always,
rely on the passion, enthusiasm and
dedication of our volunteers to assist
the Executive Director in managing
our organization. In addition, we will
continue to look for ways to increase
our membership worldwide as well as
offer new benefits of membership.
Your generosity has created a
successful, well respected organization.
Please help us reach our next milestone
and continue the Visions dream with
a donation today. I look forward to
seeing you in the gallery and welcome
your thoughts, ideas, and support.
Ann Olsen, President

Educational Outreach
CRITIQUE GROUP
O
nce again as part of the Liberty Station School, Quilt
Visions will be working with the Dewey Elementary third
graders on Wednesdays, May 6 through July 15 from 12:45 to
2:15. We will look at local sea birds and discuss how people affect
changes in wildlife habitat and the survival of local species. The
quilts that the children will make as part of the program will be
displayed in the Gallery as part of the Seeing Green: Visions of a
Changing Planet exhibition.
Liberty Station and the NTC Foundation will be sponsoring
a Summer Camp the first two weeks of August. Quilt Visions
will be participating by offering a quilting activity as part of the
camp activities. Other activity choices provided by Liberty Station
professionals will include dance, drama, and karate. All activities
will be designed for children ages 8 through 12. The camp will
offer half- and full-day options. Please call Susan at 619-573-9303
for more information about enrolling your child.
Quilt Visions needs volunteers to work with the children for both
of these valuable programs. Your continued support and help with
these programs is greatly appreciated. Last year our participation
earned Quilt Visions $5,000 from the grant administered by the
NTC Foundation. Not only is this grant valuable monetary support
for our organization but our participation supports and sustains
our goals for education and community outreach.
If you enjoy working with children or enjoyed working in last
year’s Liberty School program, please call the Gallery to sign up. Phyllis
Newton and Janice Taylor will again be co-chairing this program.
Spring Fling & Egg Hunt
Q
uilt Visions participated in the Liberty Station Spring Fling
Easter Egg Hunt event held April 11. There were four egg
hunts divided by children’s ages. There
were also many activities including
musical entertainment, kids’ jumper,
balloon artist, face painting and photos
with the Easter Bunny. Quilt Visions
offered demonstrations and lessons
for children to create small fused art
quilts. Special thanks to Betsy Vernetti
for heading the project!
J
The Critique Group is made up of members
who meet once a month to have meaningful
and thought-provoking discussions about
their work, both finished and in progress.
It’s an ideal way to ‘see’ your work from a
distance and listen to views of like-minded
Art Quilters. The Critique Group has been
meeting for about a year and now has 10
members who participate each month as their
schedules allow. Each person brings some
work, and then we discuss all of the pieces,
offering our suggestions where needed.
Thus far everyone has been pleased and
encouraged by the feedback. New members
are always welcomed, so please think about
joining us. We meet at Visions Gallery, 10
am to 12 noon on
the last Friday of
the month. Seen

Tsang and Doria
Goocher getting
up close with one

SPECIAL THANK-YOU
K
ris Herman, Charlotte Bird, Patti Sevier and
the rest of the Board would like to extend
a special thank-you to all our volunteers who
took advantage of the opportunity to white glove
docent at the Oceanside Museum of Art during
this year’s Visions show. OMA recorded 11,000
visitors to the museum during the exhibition!

ill LeCroissette, Bob Leathers and Dan Olfe presented a half-day
workshop at the Gallery, March 21, on successfully entering a
juried art quilt exhibition. Topics included how to write an artist
statement, photography to show work to its best advantage and
technical aspects of putting digital imagery on a CD. These
three California artists have all had work accepted into juried
shows including Quilt National and Quilt Visions. The eager and
enthusiastic participants took notes, asked questions and went
home better prepared to face the task of completing an entry to a

Elizabeth Busch:
A Retrospective
“E
lizabeth Busch: A Retrospective”
opened to an enthusiastic crowd
of local fans as well as Busch’s family and
friends from Hawaii, northern California
and the east coast.
Elizabeth Busch received her B.F.A
from the Rhode Island School of
Design. Since 1987 she has been a selfemployed studio artist and teacher.
Busch’s work can be found in public,
corporate and museum collections all
over the world and has been exhibited
internationally. Her pieces have been
published in books, magazines and
journals including The Art Quilt by
Robert Shaw, The Quilter’s Handbook by
Rosemary Wilkinson, Downeast Magazine,
American Quilter, Fiberarts, Martha
Stewart Living, and Contemporary Quilt
Art: An Introduction and Guide by Kate
Lenkowsky.
She has juried many shows, including
The Art Quilt: Celebrating
Women’s Visions and Energies,
in Rochester, New York, and
Quilt National in Athens,
Ohio. She is also the recipient of
numerous honors and awards including
the President’s Choice Award at Quilt
Visions 2006.
In addition to art quilts, Busch also
creates large installations of kinetic
sculptures that hang in libraries, schools
and churches from Maine to Alaska.
Elizabeth designed a small installation
of her larger sculptural work as part of
this exhibition.
On Saturday, April 4, Elizabeth led
a fascinating lecture and tour of the
exhibition describing the inspiration for
and techniques used to create her work.
Don’t miss this opportunity to see the
work of this accomplished and prolific
artist. Exhibition runs through June 7.
E
“I
lizabeth taught a two-day class on
her techniques for painting canvas
and cutting and fusing it to with other
fabrics to create a new composition. She
also demonstrated how to use metal leaf
as a design element in art quilts. (pictured
at right.) Following are reviews of the
class from two students.
“E
lizabeth was an excellent and
patient teacher and I enjoyed the
attitude of openness that she brought to the
process. She also seemed very interested
in getting to know the [students]. I highly
recommend her class.”
—Deborah Fitch
am learning about “Art Quilting”
through Karen Cunagin’s Fiber Arts
Class in Fallbrook, CA. She encourages her
students to continue our education through
sources like Visions. So when this course
with Elizabeth Busch was announced, I did
the only thing I knew to do. I signed up. I
was scared, excited, and full of anticipation.
It was fantastic! I met a fabulous
instructor with sooo much talent! She was
able to put me at ease quickly and before I
knew it; I was dyeing and having fun! The
colors, the technique, and the results spoke to
me and made me want to continue. Walking
away from the first day with real pieces of art
was wonderful and left me wanting more!
I certainly learned a lot from Elizabeth
Busch. Thank you, Visions. I look forward
to more classes with the same quality of
instructors in the future!”

Featured BOOKS AVAILABLE IN THE Gift shop
Visions Art Quilt Gallery gift shop is stocked with a large
variety of unique quilting books. New titles are arriving
every month. If you hear about a book that interests you
check with the Gallery to see when it will be available in
the shop.
Stitch, Dissolve, Distort with Machine Embroidery by Valerie
Campbell-Harding and Maggie Grey explores techniques
to dissolve, melt, and distort fabric. The text includes
easy-to-follow steps, design tips, diagrams, and photos.
The methods are safe and don’t require specialized
equipment. The text is illustrated with samples created by
the authors as well as selections from fellow
textile artists. The book is divided into three
themes. “Stitch” discusses stitching
techniques, including free-motion
machine stitching, marks, painted
stitches, texture and pin tucks.
“Dissolve” teaches the materials
and methods for dissolving fabric,
and discusses wash-away film, sticky
soluble stabilizers, water-soluble paper,
and combining media. “Distort” addresses
materials and equipment, and how to
“attack” the fabric, melt it and shape it
into new forms.
Mixed-Media Self-Portraits: Inspiration & Techniques
by Cate Coulacos Prato, is a collection of the author’s
thoughts, and stories by other artists that will inspire the
reader to personal and artistic self discovery. The book
first discusses the importance of the artist’s self-portrait.
This resource explores creative self-portraits through fun
and easy exercises and essays using different mediums,
techniques and examples. And finally, it illustrates the
mechanics of creation. Guest contributors include Karen
Fricke, Kathie Briggs, Linda Edkins Wyatt, Kelli Perkins,
Yvonne Porcella, Jane LaFazio, and Janet Ghio.
Contemporary QuiltArt Association 20th Anniversary. The
Contemporary QuiltArt Association is a non-profit arts
organization in Washington state formed in 1986. This
diverse group of artists, teachers, writers, collectors and
shop owners works to educate the public and promote
public interest in the contemporary art quilt, encourage both
public and private collecting of art quilts. The members
exhibit locally, nationally and internationally in such shows
as “Quilt National,” “Visions,” “American Museum: Quilts
and Textiles,” and the Bellevue Art Museum. Contemporary
QuiltArt Association 20th Anniversary showcases five of the
most recent exhibitions and shares the history of
one of the oldest art quilt organizations in
the country. It features over 210 pages of
fabulous photographs.
The Quilter’s Book of Design, Expanded
Second Edition by Ann Johnston will provide
a source of inspiration and design confidence
for quilters of any skill level. It describes the
tools designers can use to create different visual
effects—line, shape, value, color, pattern, and
texture—by illustrating with over 350 examples.
Brief end-of-chapter practice workshops help
the reader put principles into practice. Different
approaches to begin the creative process are presented,
including working with geometric shapes, cutting fabric
freehand, drawing from photographs and many more. The
book offers clear, understandable explanations of design
concepts, with examples to which quilters can easily relate.
It’s complete with full-length projects but oriented to
developing the individual voice.
In addition to these wonderful titles, we have many other
fantastic books, as well as plenty of gift items available such
as hand-dyed fabrics, beaded earrings, colorful necklaces,
ornaments, quilted bookmarks, decorative gourd vases and
Quilt Visions mugs and totes.
