Tech.-Spec, --- your explanation !
We always recommend that you should try equipment before you
buy it. Elinchrom manufacture market leading flash equipment
for every application, so for us, this is a normal part of the
selection process.
Power. Not just the number on the side of the unit, but the claimed
maximum power output.
Aperture. Not just the claimed maximum power, but the actual intensity
of the flash in f stops generally at 1m distance, and using an ISO of 100.
Recycling. The time it takes for the head to be ready to use after taking
a shot. This is very important if you are looking for those wonderfully
relaxed in-between or impromptu images.
Fires only when ready. This ensures when you are working quickly, that
you have the exposure you are expecting. If the head can fire before it’s
ready, that’s not good !
Flash Duration. A very important technicality. When using only flash
lighting this is your effective shutter speed.
A fast flash will give crisp results, enabling the whole flash to take place
within the flash synchronisation speed --- thereby providing consistent
colour and exposure, and will enable fast synchronisation speeds to be
used where necessary. For example, where combining flash with daylight.
Power Range. If you always use the same fairly high power levels, then
a wide power range may not be important. But, particularly when using
digital cameras incorporating a small chip, you will also need low power
for those very wide apertures that provide shallow depth of field --making a wide and stable power range very useful.
Auto-voltage seeking. Much more than just bi-voltage, this enables
a flash head to track the actual mains voltage wherever you are,
continuously adjusting and maintaining optimum performance.
Accessory fitting. A lock is useful, a double lock is better, and a locking
mechanism that, when released, leaves two hands free for attaching
those larger accessories, is very useful (helping to avoid bashed
flashtubes and modelling lamps).
Modelling Lamp. Useful also as a continuous light source, but best
turned down when not in use. This avoids heat soak and lengthens their
life.
Modelling lamp modes. In general, the more options the better.
Switchable slave. If you don’t want other flashes to fire your flash, it is
very important that the slave should be switchable.
Central brolly and accessory fitting. Close to the central axis this
maximises the value of umbrellas and enables a complete system of
creative accessories to be used in combination with reflectors, softboxes
etc.
Digital display and control. Not to be confused with digital display of
analogue control ! Digital display provides precise information with a
repeatability only available when also using digital control circuitry.
Plug-in flashtube. This is more a transport benefit than a repair issue.
We often find when tubes are broken that other damage has been done
--- and a proper replacement which incorporates a service is the better
solution.
Also, will you always have a spare flash tube with you ? Better when
goods are in long-haul transit just to remove the flash tube and replace
it on arrival ?
Trigger voltage. The major camera manufacturers recommend 5v.
Fan cooling. Definitely an advantage for cool running, but this also
enables high power modelling lamps to be used continuously with
flash accessories.
Stabilisation. Creative lighting often requires consistent and therefore
stable flash output, enabling the final image to be an evolution of
experimentation. The more stable, the better.
Audible ready signal. Confirming your previous flash has fired and
that the unit is ready again. Also confirming that any control setting
changes have been completed.
Auto power dumping. Gives you the option of waiting for the correct
reduced power level to be achieved, or firing the flash and waiting the
short recycling time for it to be ready. Auto dumping also enables a
flash unit to achieve and maintain more accurate power levels more
quickly.
Weight. Unless you are a body builder, lower weight is always an
advantage --- that’s multiplied by the number of flash heads you are
using !
Country of manufacture. A subjective evaluation of the quality of the
product and accessibility of any technical support that may be required.
But we wouldn’t manufacture in Switzerland unless we felt the benefits
fully justified the cost !
Price. One thing to bear in mind is that there are some very cheap units
in the market. We also could make very cheap units, but Elinchrom
won’t manufacture anything that won’t do the job. They believe that a
“can do” specification provides better value over the long term, and it’s
much easier to use --- often avoiding problems that can’t be corrected
when the moment has passed. If you are interested, why not take a
look at and compare the second-hand or part exchange values of
Elinchrom?

Flash System!
Is the secure remote control system from Elinchrom.
It is comprised of four modules.
The Transmitter module which is fitted
with a hot shoe adapter, is the smallest
and neatest in the market....
...used with the Universal Receiver, the
transmitter becomes an eight channel
radio trigger, with four groups, that will
work with most makes of flash. The set is
supplied with Elinchrom amphenol and
3.5mm connecting cables, and a charger
with adapters for most countries. This
charges the built-in battery in the Receiver,
giving 50 hours of use.
The RX Transceiver is clever.The module is simply
pushed into the RX socket of any Elinchrom RX
Compact, Power Pack or Ranger flash unit. Not
only do you then have all the previous features,
but the power of the heads and packs can be
controlled in 1/10ths of a stop, and the modelling
lamp switched on or off directly from the
on - camera transmitter.
The USB Transceiver is very clever. With
this inserted into the USB socket on a Mac or
PC and the free software downloaded from
the Elinchrom website, up to 64 heads or
packs can be controlled wirelessly from one
computer!
