group study exchange - Rotary Tasmania District 9830
ROTARY INTERNATIONAL
THE ROTARY FOUNDATION
GROUP STUDY EXCHANGE
District 9830
[Tasmania – Australia]
WELCOMES
District 7230
[New York City, USA & Bermuda]
23rd March 2010 – 22nd April 2010
Group Study Exchange
The Group Study Exchange is one of the many
educational programs of The Rotary Foundation of Rotary
International, offering a unique person-to-person
opportunity for the promotion of better understanding and
friendly relations among the peoples of the world.
The program provides for the exchange of teams of young
business and professional people between paired Rotary
districts in different countries, enabling them to study the
history, geography, institutions, culture and the way of
life of the host country as well as researching the team
member’s own vocations in the country they are visiting.
While this program is designed to promote good will,
understanding and peace, it also results in the exchange of
ideas and the development of personal acquaintances and
lasting friendships.

The Group Study Exchange
Program
I would like to extend a very warm welcome to the visiting Group Study Exchange
team from D-7230 New York, USA and Bermuda.
I hope your visit will be an enjoyable and rewarding one enabling you to take back
many fond memories of Tasmania and its people. Likewise by getting to know you
I’m sure we will learn much about your culture and way of life.
For team members GSE is all about making new friends, broadening vocational
knowledge and experiencing a different culture while living with local families.
Rotarians are looking forward to your visit and will do everything possible to ensure
your GSE experience meets your expectation.
Group Study Exchange is a popular Foundation program in our District. Most years
we have two exchanges with the majority of clubs applying to become involved in the
program.
My thanks to Chairman Peter Murfett and his team and to Rotary clubs for the time
and effort they have put in preparing for your visit. You will have the opportunity to
enjoy Tasmanian hospitality and hopefully sufficient time to appreciate the natural
beauty of our island as you breathe the purest air in the world. Vocational days have
been carefully planned and I am sure each of these days will give each of you an
experience of long term value.
Welcome and enjoy the GSE experience.

TASMANIA
Tasmania is the smallest and most picturesque state of Australia. Separated from the
mainland by the 150 miles stretch of Bass Strait, Tasmania is a unique land of rugged
mountains, evergreen forests, fertile farmland and scenic coastline.
Tasmania’s land area of 26,294 square miles is almost half the size of New York State. The
climate is temperate, with summer daytime temperatures often around 77°F while winter
daytime temperatures seldom fall below 50°F. Rainfall is predominantly in winter.
Primary industries include agriculture, mining, fishing and forestry. Favourable climatic
conditions result in varied agriculture that includes vegetable production, poppies for
pharmaceutical products, pyrethrum for natural insecticides, dairying, beef, lamb and wool
production. A clean and green image is being used to promote these products to the world.
Secondary industry plays an important part in the State's economy. It includes information
technology, shipbuilding, mineral smelting, paper manufacturing, vegetable processing,
cheese and chocolate production. Energy is currently derived from hydropower; wind power
farms have been established and natural gas is also brought onshore.
Tourism is a significant industry in the state. Many tastes are catered for with heritage and
wine trails and some of the world's best bush walking and fly fishing.
The island has a decentralised population of 500,000. The main centres are Hobart in the
south (the capital city with 205,000 people); Launceston (98,500) in the north; and
Devonport (25,000) and Burnie (18,000) in the State’s north-west.
Tasmania is one of six states and two territories that make up the Commonwealth of
Australia. It was discovered in 1642 by the Dutch Navigator, Abel Tasman, and was initially
known as Van Diemen’s Land. The British established the first permanent European
settlement in 1803, and it became the final destination for their worst convicts. Convict
transportation ended in 1853, and the island was renamed Tasmania in honour of its
discoverer. Britain granted responsible government to the island in 1855 and in 1901
Tasmania became part of the Commonwealth of Australia.
European settlement devastated Tasmania’s aboriginal population, who had lived in
Tasmania for about 35,000 years. Efforts are now being made to return key pieces of land to
the descendants of the original Tasmanian inhabitants, and reconciliation is an important
social and political issue in Australia.

Welcome to GSE Team Members
A warm welcome is extended to the GSE Team from D-7230 New York, USA and
Bermuda to D-9830 Tasmania, Australia.
Our District has a strong commitment to the GSE Program and with the leadership of
District Chair Peter Murfett the GSE committee has produced what we believe to be
an excellent program. We hope that you will enjoy the wide variety of cultural
opportunities during your visit and gain further insights into your choice of careers as
you experience your vocational days.
You will also have the opportunity to enjoy Tasmania’s hospitality as you travel
around our beautiful State. You will have time to appreciate the beauty of our natural
wilderness areas as you breathe some of the freshest air in the world. There will also
be many occasions on which you will sample our cuisine, see something of our
primary and secondary industries, our political structure and government
administration.
We look forward to welcoming you to our District Conference, which is always a
highlight of our Rotary year, and to hear about your country.
We hope this GSE visit will be one of your most memorable life experiences and that
you will come to appreciate our Australian way of life, enjoy the beauty of Tasmania
and establish many lasting friendships.

District Chair
Group Study Exchange
District 9830
A very warm welcome to the visiting GSE Team from D-7230 New York City, USA&
Bermuda. Tasmania is keen to provide you with an exceptional experience and a most
enjoyable visit – we hope that you take back to your country a range of vocational
learnings, a love of our State and new ideas.
Our Rotarians, partners and friends of Rotary always look forward to the visits of GSE
teams with great enthusiasm and expectation. It is one of the icon programs of Rotary
International which offers so much to participants. We share wonderful experiences
with visiting GSE members and many of us continue close contact with the Team
Leader and Members, giving us a better understanding of each other and bringing our
worlds closer together. The latter is one of the highlights of GSE.
As you will be aware, a GSE visit requires a lot of preparation by the Team Leader
and Members. Likewise, we as the host District have tried to ensure that the planning
and preparation by our District Committee, Rotarians and host families in visited
clubs, and the many people who will contribute to your visit, has been professional
and well organised.
I want to offer my grateful thanks to all in Tasmania who have contributed in the
planning of this visit – without the giving of your time and your cooperation GSE
could not happen.
The Program covered in this booklet is detailed and challenging – I am sure you would
not have expected otherwise. We hope it meets your expectations and includes many
of the wishes you have for your visit.
I look forward to spending time with you while you are here. I trust that you gain from
the visit as much as I did as a Team Leader to India some two years ago and that you
return home as ambassadors for Tasmania in Australia.

As an Associate Architect at Vincent Benic Architect, LLC my tasks often vary
because of the small size of our office. My primary task is usually Project
Management. That is, overseeing a project through the initial design stags, producing
contract documents, bidding the job to contractors, and managing the project during
construction. During the project, I would most likely be surveying, drafting and
designing as well.
I would like to meet with Tasmanian architects, perhaps visit a firm or attend an
Australian Institute of Architects in Tasmania event, I want to get a better
understanding of the architectural practice in Tasmania, the similarities and
differences to our practice in NYC. I think collecting and documenting these
similarities and differences will be a central part of my presentation when I return to
the States.
I am also interested in prevailing cultural attitudes of Tasmanians. I have read that
Tasmanians are very environmentally conscious. I think this and other cultural
sensibilities may not only influence their practice of architecture but will manifest
itself in other areas of their culture. That said, by no means do I want to limit my
explorations of Tasmania to architectural related institutions, gatherings or buildings. I
want to explore all areas of Tasmania’s environment, culture and history.

Vocation: Banking with a strong interest in management/leadership development
strategies and Corporate Social Responsibility activities.
Years in Vocation: 2.5
Type of Industry: Banking
Specific tasks which I perform: I sell transaction banking services to large
corporations in the chemicals and oil industry. Specifically, I work with treasurers and
treasury managers to understand how they are processing their payables and
receivables. I then recommend what cash management services would be appropriate
to help them better control the in/out flow of cash (examples of services offered
include an online banking platform, lockbox, wire transfers and low value electronic
payments, cash pooling services, etc.).
Recently, my role expanded and I am now also responsible for selling trade finance
products (supplier financing, standby letters of credit, documentary collections and
trade guarantees). This necessitates that I understand what a client imports/exports and
which of the above trade products/services best apply (a task I still find challenging, as
this is a new area for me).
Finally, it is possible that when I return from Tasmania, I will be moved into a new
role, managing a team of 6 people who work with existing clients, servicing their dayto-day needs and growing business by selling additional services.
Page | 9
What I do in a typical working day: I call current clients to mine for new
opportunities and sell additional services that may be helpful. I meet with prospective
clients to understand their current treasury needs and future objectives; and then make
recommendations on how they can automate their treasury back office, reduce costs,
become more efficient in processing payments in/out. I read Annual Reports to
understand a client’s product/operations and where they do business. I create
PowerPoint presentations about the bank’s offerings and present to clients regularly.
Hobbies, cultural interests, sites to visit: A huge fan of the outdoors, I would love to
get to know Tasmania by hiking, biking, swimming or snorkeling through its national
parks, lakes, mountains, forests and beaches whenever and as often as possible. Any
opportunity to appreciate wildlife and nature is on the top of my list. (I will also start
training for a triathlon upon return from Tasmania and thus, any opportunity to
exercise or remain active would be appreciated.)
Also, though I am mostly lactose intolerant I make a special exception for cheese! As
a result, a cheese-tasting tour would be lovely. A visit to a local winery and/or a
session on pairing good cheeses with wines would be fascinating. Even the ability to
see how cheese is made would be a welcome treat.
Finally, I am interested in massage therapy as a hobby. If possible, learning massage
techniques, or about pressure points and relaxation methods would be icing on the
cake!

In my role as Director of Human Resources, I undertake organisational tasks with
regard to staffing needs, hiring of low to mid level staffing positions, office
management, corporate and political event planning and benefit administration. I also
operate as a liaison between staff and management and work closely with the business
owners to implement staffing policies.
Whilst in Tasmania, I wish to meet with staffing agencies (both non and executive
level), meet with vendors who supply office equipment, custom printing services,
copiers, office furniture, telephone and other utilities, computers and data services,
storage facilities, payroll administration, courier services etc.
The vocational goals I have for the exchange are to learn from another culture the
techniques, procedures and applications that will be helpful to me in an effort to
broaden my base knowledge. I would like to work with a smart professional who is
willing to share experiences and information. Overall, I am keen to experience a
different perspective of my profession.

I am a six year resident of New York City. My family immigrated to the United States
22 years ago when I was nine years old. At age 17, I participated in a year-long Rotary
International exchange program to Lingen, Germany and this experience changed my
life.
I am a Research Associate on an internal Change Management Team at the United
Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in New York. In my role, I contribute to
strategies, which aim to increase effectiveness of the Agency’s Headquarters Bureaus
as well as the 160 country Offices. I conduct research and analyze operational and
program performance indicators in order to scope performance improvement
opportunities for Clients.
Prior to joining the UN, I was Director of Special Programs at a labor standards
consulting firm where I gained experience in management systems with a particular
emphasis on non-profit accountability and standards in the corporate social
responsibility (CSR) sector. It was an exciting time which allowed me to travel to over
30 countries for my work. I have an avid interest in local community service and
currently volunteer for and serve on the Boards of two nonprofit organizations.
I am interested in experiencing all that is wonderful about Tasmania, especially its
world renowned natural environment as well as its wines, which are in harvest around
the time of our group study exchange.
Vocationally, I am interested in visiting with public sector, management consulting or
nonprofit organizations.
