Not a Film is art
of resistance
Glamgallery
A scene from the film This Is Not a Film.
So if this is not a film, it is,
among other things, a statement
of creative resistance in the face
of tyranny and a document of
intellectual freedom under
political duress in Iran
Jafar Panahi

NYT SYNDICATE
HE title This Is Not a Film
nods in the direction of Rene
Magritte’s famous painting
of a pipe, but at least at first
glance, this new 75-minute
work of cinema by Jafar Panahi has little in common with any sly Surrealist
prank.
This video essay was recorded in
Tehran, Iran, last year, as Panahi, one
of the leading Iranian filmmakers of the
last decade, was under a legal assault
from his government that included the
confiscation of his passport, the threat
of a long prison sentence and an even
longer ban on making movies.
Careful to obey the letter of that
injunction – and thus exposing the preposterousness as well as the meanness
of its spirit – Panahi did not write a
screenplay or wield a full-size camera. A
colleague, Mojtaba Mirtahmasb (credited as co-director), comes to his apartment to shoot, and Panahi restricts his
activities to talking, recording with his
iPhone, commenting on some of his
earlier films and reading aloud from
existing scripts. So if this is not a film, it
is, among other things, a statement of
creative resistance in the face of tyranny
and a document of intellectual freedom
under political duress.
But that “among other things” brings
us, in a way, back to Magritte, because
while This Is Not a Film bristles with a
topical, real-world urgency pointedly
excluded from the Surrealist project, it
is also a provocative, radical and at
T
times surprisingly playful meditation
on the nature of representation. Using
modest, ready-to-hand techniques and
a format that seems to emphasise the
most banal, literal-minded, artless
aspects of picture taking, Panahi has
constructed a subtle, strange and
haunting work of art.
Don’t tell the Iranian authorities,
though by now they should be familiar
with movies that explore the enigmatic
qualities of everyday life while at the
same time inviting ruminations on the
ambiguities of cinema itself. In the
1990s and the early years of this century Iranian filmmakers like Mohsen
Makhmalbaf and Abbas Kiarostami,
Panahi’s erstwhile mentor, blended
social inquiry with formal self-consciousness in a series of experiments
that amounted to the invention of a new
style.
The international eminence of
Iranian cinema – the most recent manifestation of which is the Oscar given to
Asghar Farhadi last Sunday for A
Separation – is in large measure a
recognition of this novel and fruitful
way of mixing documentary, social realism and poetic insight.
Kiarostami’s Life and Nothing More,
Makhmalbaf’s Moment of Innocence
and The Apple by his daughter Samira
are in part about how the movie camera
can estrange and intensify the reality it
discloses to the viewer. Actual events in
the world – the aftermath of an earthquake in a rural village, a violent
encounter between a policeman and a
student radical, a bizarre episode of
family dysfunction – are not simply
documented in these films but are also
re-enacted, interpreted and argued
about as the cameras roll. Cinema is
both a transparent lens and a distorting
mirror, and using it as a tool to examine
the facts of human existence makes it
impossible to take any of those facts for
granted.
There is a philosophical headiness to
these
recursive,
argumentative
movies, an intellectual high that
accompanies and sometimes magnifies their emotional impact. Though A
Separation is not as formally self-conscious, turning as it does on competing
views and after-the-fact reconstructions of a contested event, it works in a
similar vein.
And so do Panahi’s earlier films,
notably The Circle, Crimson Gold and
Offside, which add a vigorous dose of
pointed and passionate social criticism.
His contribution to Iranian cinema in
the last decade has been to bring matters of class, gender and social alienation into the foreground with tact as
well as with anger.
In the wake of the contested elections
of 2009 and their bloody aftermath, it is
perhaps not surprising that the forces of
reaction singled out Panahi for punishment, even though (or perhaps just
because) they knew that persecuting
him would raise an international outcry. This Is Not a Film, smuggled out of
Iran last year to be shown at Cannes
and other international festivals, has
done important work in keeping the
rest of the world aware of the Iranian
situation.
But if that were the primary reason to
see it, Panahi’s unclassifiable intervention in the world’s collective imaginative life would be equivalent to a committee-written letter to The New York
Review of Books. It is so much more
than that, so much more than a simple
act of protest against oppression, partly
because it looks like quite a bit less.
What do you see? A middle-aged man
puttering around a spacious, elegant
apartment that might be the home of a
cosmopolitan, middle-class intellectual
anywhere in the world, full of books,
art, high-end electronics and other nice
things.
The man, whose family is visiting relatives, chats with his lawyer on the
phone, tends to his daughter’s pet iguana and watches bits of some of the
movies he made back when he was permitted to practice his profession. He
sometimes lets his anxiety and fatigue
show, but mostly he seems to regard his
situation with stoicism and a measure
of amusement. He is clearly more
accustomed to observing and reflecting
on the actions of others than to being
the centre of the action.
And so he does both, turning a highly
personal video diary into a charged and
expansive historical narrative. There is
no plot (it’s not a film, after all), but
there is nonetheless an amazing twist at
the end, followed by a quiet tremor of
awe.
How did Panahi do this? I’m at a bit
of a loss to explain, to tell you the truth,
since my job is to review movies, and
this, obviously, is something different:
a masterpiece in a form that does not
yet exist.

Is Natalie Portman married?
Is Aniston friends with Jolie?
ACTRESS Natalie Portman has fuelled rumours of marriage with
choreographer boyfriend Benjamin Millepied after she was
sported wearing a ring on her wedding finger. The actress was
photographed wearing a ring as she clutched an envelope
onstage during the 84th Annual Academy Awards ceremony.
Portman, 30, announced in December 2010 that she and
Millepied were engaged and that they were expecting a child.
The couple welcomed a son, Aleph last June.
ACTRESS Jennifer Aniston reportedly sent flowers to Angelina Jolie to congratulate
her on her directorial debut In the Land of Blood and Honey. The actresses were not
on talking terms since Brad Pitt, 48, left Aniston in 2005 and started a relationship
with Jolie, 36, whom he met on the set of Mr and Mrs Smith. But a source claims
relations between the former rivals have started to improve now. “Brad Pitt sent
Aniston a copy of Angelina’s new film In the Land of Blood and Honey. Aniston sent
Angelina flowers and a note telling her how beautifully directed it was. It’s a sign that
things are thawing between them,” a source said.

Mismatch is the new match as fashion rules relax
Fashion
guide
MIX checks, paisley, stripes and floral prints in one garment make a unique style statement. With the new and relaxed style rules now it is
possible to wear all kinds of prints on one ensemble and look good. So, if you want to wear stripes with florals or add a few graphic prints to
the mix, it is possible to do so without worrying about the mishmash of motifs. The international catwalks have been swamped with clashing
prints and mismatched touches that are totally acceptable now, and the look is here to stay all through the year. There are, however, some
rules to keep in mind when trying out the look. You can’t just pull on a pair of red trousers with teddy bear prints and hope it matches with
your striped yellow blouse. Neither can you wear any old prints together and hope it passes muster. The first place to begin is to use the same
colour family in your ensemble, when you decide to mix prints. This will ensure that the outfit comes together much better. If you are not too
confident about the print on print look yet, wear patterned accessories to begin with and gradually match them with your clothes. Another
way to go about it is to buy garments which already have mixed prints on them. The print on print trend may not be easy to pull off initially,
but once you get it right, it just gets easier. Men can also try the look and many recent fashion shows featured men in checks, pinstripes and
other prints, all worn together. Still worried? Learn to wear all your prints with confidence and it will be half the battle won.
Brush in pocket, acclaim in
hand for hairstylist Ted Gibson

USAN Rocco, 49, an interior
designer, has seen the same
hairdresser
in
Fort
Lauderdale, Florida, since
she was 16. “I felt like I’d be
cheating on her to go anywhere else,” she said.
But Ted Gibson – known for his
makeovers on TLC’s What Not to Wear
– is the kind of celebrity hairdresser
that has Rocco, a wife of 30 years, excited to cheat. “I wanted a special experience, because I’m frustrated with my
hair at this point in my life,” said Rocco,
who has an auburn bob and typically
pays $100 for cut and colour. “I want to
look my best, short of plastic surgery,
and do something to update my look,
and have a professional look at my hair
with a fresh set of eyes.”
Armand Rocco, her husband and an
owner of the Kitchenworks, their custom-cabinet business, doesn’t mind
paying $950 to have his wife be one of
the first shorn by Gibson himself at his
new salon in the W hotel in Fort
Lauderdale. “I didn’t think about it as
$950 for a haircut,” he said. “If you
think of it that way, it’s a lot of money,
but if you think about it as a very unique
gift to give someone, then it’s worth it.”
A late bloomer who started in the
fashion business at 33 after helping to
develop Aveda products, Gibson, 46, is
an image-maker, known for styling the
tresses of rising-star celebrities like
Ashley Greene of Twilight fame, Mila
Kunis of Black Swan and Jessica
Chastain, recently nominated for best
supporting actress for The Help. A
calming presence who doles out compliments as he touches his clients’ hair, he
has done bodacious looks for more than
15 magazine covers in the past year or
so, including Lucky, BlackBook,
Essence, Playboy and InStyle Hair.
Gibson, 6-foot-3, built and still applecheeked thanks to well-placed Sculptra
injections, has all the trappings of a star
hairdresser: a namesake line of shampoos tailored to hair colours like “captivating copper”; backstage gigs coiffing
for Lela Rose, among others at New
York Fashion Week; and now two luxurious but unpretentious salons, including the Manhattan original. Since
August, Gibson – a relentless self-promoter on Facebook and Twitter – has
been campaigning on both sites to get
the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and
Sciences to award an Oscar for hair, so
hairdressers might at last get their due.
His growing profile is all the more
remarkable given his roots. “If you
think about all the people who wanted
to do this before me, they have been
straight, white with an accent – Vidal
Sassoon, Frederic Fekkai, John Freida
S

and Horst Rechelbacher,”
said Gibson, who favours
pink shirts and the ubermasculine scent Le Labo
Santal 33. “It’s new territory. It’s scary at one
point, and exciting at
the other.”
That a gay black man is
the face of the Ted
Gibson brand still surprises some. When he’s part of
an entourage, “people think
I’m the bodyguard half the
time,” he said. “Then they
realise, oh, you have a brush in
your pocket or you have a can of hairspray.” Those who’ve never met him or
seen his picture often make assumptions: “People always think I’m a white
Englishman,” he said.
He grew up as an Army brat, he
played football and raised cattle. At 15,
he came out to his unsuspecting parents. “I just knew I needed to be who I
was,” he said over egg-white omelets on
the deck of Steak 954 at the W hotel in
Fort Lauderdale. “It was tough.”
Gibson’s career trajectory has sur-
prised
his mother,
Beatrice, 81. “I didn’t think he would
get as far as he is now,” she confessed.
“He was so shy.”
No more. On a blustery Tuesday
evening, inside the cozy New York
apartment Gibson shares with Jason
Backe, the celebrity colourist with
whom he builds his brand and his life,
the couple is tussling over who came up
with the phrase “mixing up the magic.”
It’s become a catchphrase of
Gibson’s on What Not to Wear,
which they watched that night
while eating Middle-Eastern
takeout, followed by homemade
brownies. But Backe contends
he coined it. “I could have
invented the light bulb, and no
one would believe me!” Backe
exclaimed, joking.
Their merry cattiness spilled
onto Twitter as they sat, smartphones in hand, in front of the flatscreen above their working fireplace,
which Spencer is snoozing next to.
The feisty couple volleys a lot of
zingers, as well as praise, back and
forth. They have been together 18 years,
had a commitment ceremony after 2
years and have co-owned their New
York salon for 8 years, with Gibson as
the creative force, and Backe, 43, as the
pragmatist who makes ideas happen.
At times, their banter might seem
worthy of a reality-TV show. Although
they did appear on The Real
Housewives of DC back when they had
a licensed salon in the area, a show isn’t
in the works. They remain optimistic,
though, and have even alerted their
friends near their upstate getaway –
they call them their Catskills Queens –
that “they will be our second-string cast
of characters,” said Backe, adding his
own reality check to lower expectations:
The networks “are not ready for an
interracial gay couple on TV.”
In an interview, Beatrice Gibson
admitted it took time to become comfortable with her son’s being gay. “You
don’t want that to happen, but nowadays you see it all the time, two girls or
two boys, and young, too,” she said. She
talks to her son daily, and sometimes
they pray together. “A lot of parents
don’t speak to their kids” after learning
they are gay, she said. “I think that’s
awful.”
On What Not To Wear, Gibson stands
out because of his daring choices. He
dyed an Asian waif’s rose-highlighted
stringy hair fuchsia and gave her blunt
bangs, a makeover that brought 2,000
new fans to the show’s Facebook page,
said Stephanie Eno, the senior director
of production for TLC. “His demeanor
brings a calm, and his cachet builds that
instant trust,” she added.

Scientists have come to conclude
that life began in hydrothermal
vents in the deep sea, but a
controversial study published this
week in proceedings of the
national academy of sciences
argues that Darwin might have
been on the right track
BRIAN SWITEK
NYT SYNDICATE
OW life began is one of nature’s enduring mysteries. Fossil and biological clues have led scientists to estimate that cells originated on this
planet about 4 billion years ago, but exactly
what catalysed their emergence has remained elusive.
In an 1871 letter to botanist Joseph Hooker, Charles
Darwin wondered whether life might have begun “in
some warm little pond, with all sorts of ammonia and
phosphoric salts, light, heat, electricity, etc present.” Since
then, scientists have come to conclude that life began in
hydrothermal vents in the deep sea, but a controversial
study published this week in proceedings of the national
academy of sciences argues that Darwin might have been
on the right track.
The study, led by Armen Mulkidjanian of Germany’s
University of Osnabruck, suggests that inland pools of
condensed and cooled geothermal vapour have the ideal
characteristics for the origin of life. The conclusion is
based mainly on the chemistry of modern cells. Citing an
observation made in 1926 by biochemist Archibald
Macallum that the composition of the cytoplasm of modern cells differs greatly from that of seawater, and assuming that cells have changed little over the past four billion
years led the researchers to propose that modern cell
chemistry would provide clues about the type of environment in which life emerged.
Central to the hypothesis are the ions of particular metals – the new study is a follow-up to a 2009 paper in
which Mulkidjanian and Michael Galperin suggested that
the first cells developed in zinc-rich environments. “In all
living cells,” Mulkidjanian says,“the cytoplasm is rich in
potassium, zinc, manganese, and phosphate ions, which
are not widespread in marine environments, and has
lower amounts of sodium ions than outside.”
Such conditions, the researchers argue, are found only
where hot hydrothermal fluid brings the ions to the surface – places such as geysers, mud pots, fumeroles and
other geothermal features. Within these fuming and bubbling basins, water laden with
zinc and manganese ions
could have collected and
cooled in shallow
pools which had
drifted away from
the
geothermal
‘’hot spots’’ as the
Earth’s crust shifted. Such pools could
have been amenable to
the development of life.
Frustratingly, though, there is
very little likelihood of finding direct
evidence of such “hatcheries,” as Mulkidjanian calls them,
in the fossil record. Mulkidjanian notes that the primordial ponds would have been extremely acidic and therefore not preserved signs of the first life. He adds, however, that the ancient conditions could be modelled in the
lab, “so at least some steps of the proposed scheme could
be tested, and we are eager to promote such experiments
and see their results.”
H
Expert dissent
The study is already generating strong disagreement
among other early-life experts. Nick Lane, a biochemist at
University College London, UK, points out that the geothermal-pool hypothesis is problematic both biologically
and geologically. “There was almost certainly very little
land 4 billion years ago and terrestrial systems would have
been unstable, short-lived, and severely limited in distribution,” Lane says. Such conditions would have made it
difficult for early life to gain a foothold, he says.
Lane also notes that the study has a significant conceptual flaw. “To suggest that the ionic composition of primordial cells should reflect the composition of the oceans
is to suggest that cells are in equilibrium with their medium, which is close to saying that they are not alive,” Lane
notes. “Cells require dynamic disequilibrium – that is
what being alive is all about.”
Molecular biologist Jack Szostak of Harvard Medical
School in Cambridge, Mass., says that “geothermal
active areas provide numerous advantages” and are a
plausible staging area for the origin of life, but points out
that we can’t be sure that the chemistry of modern cells
reflects the chemical conditions in which the first cells
emerged. He disputes Mulkidjanian’s claim that the
high potassium-to-sodium ratio in modern cells is a sign
of deep history, saying that instead, “it could still be that
cells evolved the ability to generate and maintain a high
potassium-to-sodium ratio in their cytoplasm for functional reasons, independent of the nature of their initial
or early environment.”
So rather than reflecting prehistoric environments,
modern cell chemistry may indicate what sets life apart.

Causes and treatments
for thinning hair
Many feel that inadequate

TRIBUNE NEWS NETWORK
AIR Loss and
thinning of
hair is a very
common condition. Almost every person,
irrespective of gender, experience one or the other hair
related issues”, says Dr
Meghna Gupta of Delhi Skin
Centre.
Linked to many serious illnesses, thinning hair is best
countered with treatment and
investigations at an early
stage. Dermatologist - Dr
Gupta helps us understand
the causes, myths and treatments for thinning hair.
“H
has a direct effect on the hair
follicle health.
Diet
Crash dieting leading to
sudden loss of weight, lack of
proteins in diet, nutritional
deficiencies like Vitamin B, D
& iron all can affect the hair
health drastically and eventually can lead to thinning of
hair.
Myths, misconceptions
about hair thinning
Oil application
Many feel that inadequate
oil application leads to hair
loss or thinning. This is not
true. Oil application only
helps if accompanied with a
massage.
Shampoo
It is not right to say that
daily shampooing leads to
hair fall. It doesn’t matter
how often the scalp is washed.
However, it is strongly recommended that you should
go for a mild shampoo.
Top five causes of
hair thinning
Hereditary
(Androgenetic Alopecia)
It is a genetic predisposition to experience hair loss
and thinning of hair. It is
commonly known as male
pattern baldness or female
pattern baldness. In males, it
leads to a receding hair line,
which is Grade I and slowly
progresses to just a band of
hair left at the base of scalp
which is Grade VII. In
females, there is widening of
parting along with thin hair
all over the scalp.
Hormonal
Hormonal imbalances are a
major contributory factor
especially in females. In such
disorders there is Androgen
(male hormone) excess,
which leads to hair loss. Post
Pregnancy and menopause:
These are physiological causes, but can be very alarming
at times, if coupled with other
causes of hair loss. This typically happens after 4-6
months of delivery.
Health conditions linked
to hair thinning
Thyroid disorders, anemia,
long standing illness, postsurgical trauma are some
other common medical conditions, which might be linked
to hair loss and hair thinning.
Stress
This is an underlying current of hair thinning and hair
loss these days. Be it physical,
mental or emotional stress, it
Wet hair combing
Many feel it leads to weakening of the roots. That is not
true. Hair fall only happens if
too much brushing or towel
drying is done very aggressively. It should be very gentle.
Shaving and trimming
Many men shave off their
heads, so that growth
improves. Hair cutting and
shaving have no impact on
the hair follicle. Salon activities like dyes, chemical treatments, and regular blow dryers can result in hair damage
and breakage.
Treatment options for
thinning of hair
Medical management is a
must. Any underlying disorder
has to be treated with oral
medications.
Nutritional supplements
are often prescribed, like oral
biotin and B complex with
iron. Laser Combs are available, which stimulate the hair
follicles and are preventive in
nature. Minoxidil application
is good as long as it is used
consistently. Mesotherapy is
another technique where
essential nutrients and hair
growth factors are injected
with micro injections into the
scalp. Hair transplant may
also be performed. This
works the best for androgenetic alopecia. Hair roots
from the back of the scalp are
extracted and implanted in
the bald areas. Results are
permanent and are often
advised by doctor’s looking at
case-specific patient’s details.

Gaga to make a cameo in Men In Black 3
Miley Cyrus receives ‘death tweets’
WILL Smith recently revealed that the Poker Face singer, Lady Gaga,
will have a small role in the upcoming sequel of Men In Black.
Smith was quoted by website ElCorilloRD.com as saying, “We have
a couple of celebrity cameos. Lady Gaga will feature in a cameo.”
Gaga had previously spoken about her desire to make a move into
the acting world, telling Ellen DeGeneres last year, “My dream would
be to be in a Woody Allen movie.” The Men In Black franchise is no
stranger to celebrity cameos, having seen the late singer Michael
Jackson star in the second film. The latest film also stars another
pop princess in the form of Nicole Scherzinger, who will be taking
on a villainous role in the movie, due for release in May.
MILEY Cyrus has called out Twitter honchos after receiving a
series of threatening messages on the social networking site.
She furiously demanded that they enforce special security
measures after several haters urged her ‘to die’ and attacked
her clothing choices. The Hannah Montana star tweeted
recently in response to a now-erased post from a fan saying:
‘I’m surrounded by love. I’m sorry for whatever happened to
make you so bitter. She added to a different follower: ‘’I won’t
tolerate someone telling me to die.’ She then wrote: ‘I think
Twitter needs to take some responsibility and make it a safe
environment.’

ROUBLED actress Lindsay
Lohan says she is putting
her bad girl image behind
her and starting a fresh
chapter in life, getting back
to acting after recent years of personal
turmoil that included arrests and
stints in jail.
The actress, 25, who is on probation
from a string of legal troubles including drunk driving, drug possession and
theft, has recently impressed court
officials with good behaviour and
seemed eager to continue on a
straight-and-narrow path.
Lohan, who became a fixture on the
Hollywood nightlife scene as a young
actress told Matt Lauer of NBC’s
Today news show that parties were
“not my thing anymore” and she was
more comfortable being a “homebody.”
“I went out, actually, a few
months ago with a friend. And I
was so uncomfortable. Not
because I felt tempted, just
because it was just the same
thing that it always was
before. And it just wasn’t
fun for me. I’ve become
more of a homebody.
And I like that,” the
actress said in

Lohan rose to fame as a likeable
child star in Disney movies such as The
Parent Trap and comedies including
Freaky Friday, but has been in and
out of jail and rehab since 2007 when
she was arrested for drunk driving and
drug possession.
She currently is serving courtordered community service at the Los
Angeles County morgue as part of her
probation, due to be completed at the
end of March, after she admitted stealing a gold necklace from a California
jewellery store in January 2011.
Lohan has expressed measures of

Jennifer
Garner and Ben Affleck
have welcomed their third
child, a baby boy, People magazine said on Tuesday, without
giving further details.
Garner, who made her name
in the television drama Alias,
wed actor and producer Affleck
in June 2005 at a private ceremony in Turks and Caicos, in
the Caribbean. They welcomed
their first daughter, Violet, in
December 2005, and second
daughter Seraphina in 2009.
The
couple,

39,
announced they were expecting
their third child in August last
year and while they did not
reveal the baby’s sex, Garner
told chat show host Jay Leno in
January this year that they
knew.
“It would be so weird to have a
boy,” Garner was quoted as having told Ellen DeGeneres. She
also said it would be “cool and
different.”
Garner will next appear in the
comedy The Odd Life of
Timothy Green later this year.
Affleck, who won a Best
Screenplay Oscar for Good Will
Hunting, which he co-wrote
with Matt Damon, next stars in
and directs the thriller Argo. He
will also appear in an untitled
Terrence Malick project with
Jessica

Rachel

according to reports.
The 31-year-old reality star left her former
Beverly Hills home
and has reportedly
moved into a new
mansion in the same
area.
She is said to be
renting a massive
6,7000 square foot
estate for $40,000 a

A spokesperson for
the star was unavailable for comment.
Though the price tag
is high, the E! star can

and I recognised that, but I am in the

after failing a drug test, she tweeted, “I
am working hard to overcome it and
am taking positive steps forward
everyday.”
Speaking to Lauer, the Mean Girls
actress admitted to being in denial
over her issues, saying it was “a scary
thing” to express to people.
“I wasn’t as comfortable with myself
then ... I think it was a fear factor that
I had about what was really going on.
And, you know, I had to get that wakeup call,” said Lohan.
But 2012 could see a fresh start for
the actress, who is set to host US
sketch comedy show Saturday Night
Live on March 3 and is also in line to
be cast as screen icon Elizabeth Taylor
in an upcoming film, a welcome
change after being dropped from projects in recent years.
The actress said she wanted to use
the opportunities to “do what I’m supposed to,” adding she will “not let anyone down.”
“I could see where it could be scary
for people to invest in me. And I don’t
want people to have that reason to be
scared anymore,” said Lohan.

Heroine not about Manisha Koirala, says
Madhur Bhandarkar
PRIYADARSHAN’S all set to start shooting his much talked
about item song Laila for Tezz. Featuring Mallika Sherawat,
the song will be choreographed by Ganesh Acharya. Leading
actors Ajay Devgn and Zayed Khan will also join Mallika for
this song. Though the two will not shake a leg with the
damsel, the actors will be featured in the song. Mallika will
be seen in one of her most glamourous avatars. The actress
will be sporting costumes designed by famous Bollywood
designer Ashley Rebello. The song has been scheduled to
wrap up in just four days. Apparently Laila will be different
from Mallika’s earlier item numbers.
FILMMAKER Madhur Bhandarkar has rubbished reports that his
film Heroine is inspired by actress Manisha Koirala’s life. “Heroine’s
not inspired by Manisha Koirala’s life. It’s a figment of imagination.
People should check facts before creating such stories,” Bhandarkar
wrote on his Twitter page. It was reported that the film, starring
Kareena Kapoor in the lead, was inspired by the ups and downs in
Manisha’s personal and professional life. Heroine is one of
Bhandarkar’s most ambitious projects, which has been plagued
with hurdles. Thankfully, the film is now on track.

AM Gopal Varma’s last
few projects have failed
to rock the box office, but
actor Rana Daggubati,
who has teamed up with
the director in Department, is confident that the film will turn out to be
one of his most stylish movies.
“Ramu (Varma) dabbles in a lot of
genres of films. He is very good with
his work, and has a wonderful storytelling pattern, which is most often
trendsetting. His film Satya broke a
stereotype, and Company gave Vivek
Oberoi such a great launchpad...I
think Department will be one of his
most stylish film ever shot,” Rana
said.
In Department, the southern star
will be seen as a grungy policeman –
a role that was earlier reserved for
Abhishek Bachchan. The film’s characters include a don, a gangster, a
gangster-turned-politician,
and
shootout specialists. No wonder it
was exciting for Rana to work in it!
“I think Ramu is one filmmaker

the subject he tackles in his films and

theme. Be it underworld or any other

When it came to acting,
the actress said she really
wanted to be sure about
her next movie assignment. “I really wanted

meaty and creative. I am
being picky about my roles.
It was almost a year after
Aisha that I consented to

as if I was looking only at
leading roles but then it
had to live up to the standards that I had set for
myself after Aisha.”
Blood Money provided
her a platform to go solo
opposite Kunal Khemu.
However, Amrita was initially reluctant to step into
the role because Bhatt’s
leading ladies are known
for their liberal skin show.
