Last year’s Musical Ship’s Wheel, 2011 Reunion Clock was a huge success and highly desired raffle Clock. Based on the responses
received, I selected a similar clock for our 2012 Reunion in Albany New York. This Particular clock called “The Americana” plays
18 tunes: America the beautiful; My Country ‘Tis of Thee; Battle Hymn of the Republic; You’re a Grand Old Flag; When the Saints
Go Marching In; She wore a Yellow Ribbon; Amazing Grace; In the Garden; Ave Maria,(Hail Mary); How Great Thou art;
Jesus Love Me; What a Friend We Have in Jesus; and 6 Christmas melodies; The First Noel; Jingle Bells; Silent Night; Deck the Halls;
Joy to the World; and lastly, We Wish You a Merry Christmas. The shape is OVAL and 21” high by16” wide. The clock also has a
light sensor so the music is not played at night.(so it doesn’t wake you up). On the hour, the clock Face opens and reveals a revolving
patriotic display. There is an open window at the bottom of the clock revealing a pendulum movement. The frame of the clock is
beautifully finished wood. See last year’s winner, Norm Schultz (44-45) inside this issue.

Dear Mr. Horn,------It is with heavy heart that I write to inform you of the passing of my Father, Raymond R.
Techman Sr., 1944 – 1946 BKR1/c, on December 12, 2011. He loved talking about his days on the Haynsworth
and the newsletters he received brought back memories he always shared with me. I would have loved to have
been able to bring him to one of the reunions but, his health did not make that feasible. He would have liked
that very much. He was a good man and a good father and I will miss him and the conversations we had.
Thank you for sending those newsletters to him all these years to keep those memories alive for him. I would
appreciate it very much if you could send me a copy of the newsletter his passing would be posted in as I would
like to have one in his memory. (Ed. Note: You can be assured Raymond that the April 2012 Newsletter will be
sent to you. Your Father will also be remembered in our Memorial service aboard the USS Slatter, DE-766, at
our 2012 Reunion in Albany, NY this coming September 19-23. )

been able to attend the reunion but due to physical condition, I am unable. Would love to go to one someday
but things are doubtful.

James,----Due to health issues in my family, I will not be able to attend the up-coming reunion in New York. I
have also had to miss the past reunions because of the same situations. Just a little note: Even though I
handled payroll while on board the Haynsworth,(Ed. Note: “Three cheers for Lawrence!), I still have trouble
remembering all my shipmates names. (another ED. Note: believe me, you are not alone on that!). Just another
small note: When we loaded stores or fuel at sea, I was assigned to man the sound powered phones for the
Captain, so he could talk directly to the other Captains involved in those operations. He assigned me the duty
of safeguarding and cleaning his phones when not in use but, to have them ready when needed. I felt proud to
have been able to perform this duty for him.

(Ed. Note: Lawrence, your comments above brought back a particular memory of mine and, since we served
in the same period you must have been on the phones when Captain Weed resorted to me to take the
Haynsworth alongside the AO since I was currently at the helm when the call went to the QM, who normally
took the helm, and he was unable to get to the bridge in time. We were moved up from inline and the QM
wasn’t on the bridge when Captain Weed asked me if I could do it. He said “You’ll do fine seaman, just follow
my orders precisely. As we come along side you’ll feel the ship being pushed out a bit just don’t over
compensate to bring her back on course.” Well, all went well and that, for me was a very exciting time. When
the QM made it to the bridge we were already moving in to position and Captain Weed told the QM to stand
behind me in case he made a change. I still remember the power of the ship when fueling was completed and
the Captain gave the order to increase speed and steer her away from the AO. This was during the 1958-1959
Med Cruise.)

Noticed on the 2011 Haynsworth Calendar, month of December, that the date is wrong when the (USS) Ault
rammed us. The date was 12/20/53. They rammed us just after 1900 hours. Was a Sunday night on 12/22/53 at
2030 hours when we tied up at the pier in Yokosuka (Japan). I know this is true because I kept a diary of the

Dear Mr. Horn,----My husband, Dan P. Fulton, enjoyed reading your newsletter after a relative researched the
USS Haynsworth on the internet and read about your organization after hearing from Dan about his time served
on the USS Haynsworth. His time on the ship was rather brief. After serving on Bougainville Island for 14
months he was returned to the U.S. near the end of World War II. He was assigned to the USS Haynsworth for
training as a gunner. The ship was off the CA coast when Dan became ill and was put in a motor launch and
taken to Treasure Island for surgery. The ship sailed without him and he was then assigned to Norman, OK to
process discharges for returning Navy Personnel. He was discharged in Aug., 1946. An interesting aspect that
occurred some years later, He was working on an audit in Orange, TX one year and as he drove by the shipyards
in Orange, he spotted the USS Haynsworth docked there for repairs. He stopped and asked if he could go aboard
but was told it was not allowed. Several years later he was working in Galveston, TX on another audit, (he was a
CPA), and saw the USS Haynsworth docked in Galveston. Upon checking this time, he found the ship was open
to visitors on certain days. We had two sons and Dan proudly took the boys to tour “his ship”. So, while his
service on the ship was brief he was proud of it.--- This letter is to notify you of his passing on October 3, 2011.
You may discontinue the newsletter to him. He was discharged in August 1946 with the Rank of Chief Petty
Officer. He then enlisted in the active reserve unit in Austin, TX while he attended the University of Texas. After
graduation we moved into an area where there was no active reserve and he was put on inactive reserves. When
the Korean war started his enlistment was frozen for another 4 years. He was always proud of his time served in

contribution to support the Organizations newsletter printing and postage along with office supplies. The most common contribution to
support our expenses is $20.00. Some shipmates send more and some less all according to their individual choice. Contributions, as
always, are strictly voluntary. ALL shipmates with a known mailing address are sent our 3X/year Newsletter. Currently we mail to
475.)

Hi Jim,----Gus Mark, 25 Manatee Ave. Sidney, NY 13838-1604. (607) 563-1905, here from the 1953-55 crew. My wife tells me that the
ship is contemplating a reunion in Albany, NY sometime in the future. Sorry to say that I have just spent a month in the Hospital and
have been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. Am presently taking chemo therapy and feeling great. We live just 102 miles southwest
from Albany, on I-88, and can be there in 2 hours. If we can be of some assistance to you and the committee, let us know and we will do
our best. In the meantime, we wish you and yours the very best, a Merry Christmas, and A Happy New Year. Fair Winds and a light

Dear Jim,-----I am sending a check for dues for 2012. If this is an incorrect amount, please advise. I am
extremely proud to wear a “Haynsworth” Cap. However, I wish it did not have all the “scrambled eggs”--to me it looks like we are all ‘captains’. Does anyone else have a similar feeling? I would like to see a cap with
“USS HAYNSWORTH” and perhaps the ship outline—not as important. Thank you for taking on all the tasks--you are a “Jim-of-all-trades”! You not only took on the tasks—you do a great job with each one!!!

PLEASE, when you change your e-mail address or postal address let me know. I get too many newsletters returned with
notations like, ‘FOWARDING EXPIRED’ or ‘NO FOWARDING ADDRESS’. Thank You.
I still receive requests to post the amount of annual dues and when they are due. While our By-Laws do not establish a
specific amount, or date, most shipmates contribute an average of $20.00 and we appreciate submission in the January/
February time frame as this helps in determining our newsletter and reunion budgets. Thank You.
So far as of today, we have 56 shipmates that have elected to receive the E-NEWSLETTER exclusively. This is a savings
of $36.40 per issue or $109.20 per year. I continue to send the e-newsletter to all 200+ e-mail addresses as an incentive to
elect the e-newsletter exclusively. If 200 were to receive the e-newsletter , we would save $390/year. On this same issue, of
the 475 hard copy newsletters there must be some that have e-mail addresses that I am not aware of. If you have an email address and have never received the e-newsletter, please send your address to me. Thank You.
I would like to solicit input from shipmates on future REUNIONS, specifically the 2013 reunion. At this time we do not
have any volunteers to host the 2013 reunion so my wife Chris and I will plan one. We have several locations that we
would be considering but we would like the suggestions of all of you. 1. Washington D.C. area. 2. Rapid City, S. Dakota.
3. Northern Illinois area (Close to Great Lakes NTC). 4. Buffalo/Niagara Falls area. 5. New England Coastal Area. Based
on shipmate input, we will begin planning the 2013 Reunion. Please respond to this request. Thank You.

Dear Jim,----Enclosed is my dues for 2012. Thanks to the December 2011 issue of the USS Haynsworth DD-700 newsletter,
I received a pleasant surprise prior to Christmas. An old shipmate, Tom ‘Moose’ Napuli was able to make telephone
contact with me through the newsletter. We relived the many good memories of the Haynsworth, the pier beer shack and
rambled on about old shipmates. It was astonishing at our age we remembered so much. When the USS Haynsworth was
decommissioned in January 1970. Tom was released from the Navy and stayed in the Texas/Louisiana area and as a result,
losing his New York City accent. Myself and my brother Joe, (CS3) were transferred to the USS Allen M. Sumner DD-692
in Mayport, Florida. We had a wonderful conversation thanks to the Newsletter.

Dear Mr. Horn:
Thank you for your letter and the generous $300.00 check from the USS Haynsworth (DD-700) Reunion Committee in
memory of your Captain and shipmate, Captain Edward H. Timm III. This contribution will be added to the
Thomas J. Peltin Destroyer Museum Grant Program in his memory.----The cost of operating and maintaining a destroyer
as a museum/memorial ship is far greater than most people realize. Paint, metal, insurance, utilities, etc.; they all add up
to far more than ticket sales can ever be expected to cover. The support of ship associations is vital to the survival of these
ships that serve as memorials to all destroyers and those who served on them. On behalf of the ships we support, I thank
the USS Haynsworth (DD-700) Reunion Committee for their generosity. Their support is greatly appreciated.

I highly recommend this newspaper for all who have served aboard one or more “TIN-CANS”.
This organization supports and provides resources and volunteers to maintain many Destroyers and recently, Destroyer
Escorts which are open to the public. Membership in the Tin Can Sailors provides a quarterly newspaper devoted to
stories provided mostly by former destroyer men. The articles are of great interest to all and would remind us of the
great contributions made by the Tin Can Sailors and their ships. At each of our reunions the “TIN CAN” Sailors provides
us with a free one year subscription which we award to a lucky shipmate at our closing Banquet. You can use the example

The picture below is believed to be the configuration of the Haynsworth prior to acceptance by
The US Navy in 1944. Note the bridge area which had to be modified to provide better visibility
over Mount 52 and the camouflage paint pattern which was not the final color scheme.

Lisbon Portugal. Navies from many of the free word anchored here for a huge celebration, circa 1960. As I recall, we had
very strong currents and throughout the anchorage bearings to specific land points had to be monitored to detect drift.

Gus is a plank owner of the USS Haynsworth, DD-700. He and his wife Fran are regular attendee’s at our
annual reunions. Gus loves to entertain us on our bus trip tours and also loves to tell great jokes. When we have
entertainment, Gus and Fran are the first to take to the dance floor. Gus&Fran, we hope to see you in Albany!
