Roman River Music 2008 Festival 9th - 12th October
Roman River Music is an annual long weekend of music in mid October, in beautiful
Autumnal countryside. The festival invites top classical, jazz and folk musicians to
give concerts in atmospheric 12th century churches, and runs a series of music days
for children throughout the year.
Headlining the festival is the breathtaking pianist Zoe Rahman who will showcase
her new album Where Rivers Meet. The festival has added two new events: A concert
in East Mersea Church and a film showing of Louis Malle’s enchanting Milou in May.
The main classical concert will be in the Lakeside Theatre at the University of Essex. The
following evening, the Festival’s first full-length song recital will be given in the intimate
surroundings of Fingringhoe Church by the stunning soprano Katerina Mina, who will make
her major role debut with the Moscow Opera later this year. The Festival is also putting on
two morning recitals in country churches, with free entry and a voluntary donation in aid of
the church. Well-known local viola player Juliet Jopling returns to play solo Bach at
Abberton, and the talented young viola player Liam Byrne in East Mersea.
For all those aged 30 and under, the Festival is offering tickets at the very low price of £3
per concert. Often you’ll get a free glass of wine into the bargain, which makes it a really
good deal.” Other deals include a Festival Pass, which gives a discount of 20% on all the
concerts. Invite your friends down for the weekend and in between concerts, walk around Fingringhoe
Wick Nature Reserve, eat seafood on Mersea Island or show your friends Beth Chatto’s famous gardens.

HEADING OFF TO THE HIMALAYAS FOR HEADWAY
Only a few weeks to go and excitement is brewing in
anticipation of the Bhara Pokhari Trek in the Annapurna
region of Nepal. The 12 participants who signed up to take
part in the Himalayan trek organised by Val Pryor, Mersea
Island Fundraising for Headway, have been madly training
for the challenging event for months and also organising
events to raise sponsorship. The trekkers are on course to
raise a minimum of £21,000 which will be divided between
Headway Essex and Headway UK. They will set off on 24th
October for Kathmandu and will be trekking for 6 days to
4100 metres with the risk of suffering the effects of altitude
sickness.
‘Trekking in Nepal is a wonderful experience and I know the group will love it,’ Val told us. ‘ It is a hard slog, especially the 4th
day when they will trek for up to l0 hours, some of it in snow, to be rewarded by the wonderful views of Manaslu, Peak 29 and
Himalchuli and then waking up the next morning to the sun reflecting on Machhapuchhare (Fish Tail Peak). These sights make
you forget your aches and blisters and the discomfort of sleeping in tents in temperatures of -12.’
‘Since our son Iain suffered head injuries in an accident 6 years ago we know how important Headway is to him, and to us. The
funds raised by the trekkers will help brain injury survivors and their families locally. Headway Essex supports over 250 families in
the county and the Headway Centre in Colchester, where Iain attends, encourages people to regain lost skills and learn new ones.
Many, many thanks go to my 12 intrepid trekkers and to their families, friends and colleagues who have been so kind in sponsoring
them.’
Headway Essex is now advertising their Starlight Ball on November 14th at The Fennes, Bocking. Tickets are £50
and can be obtained from the Headway Colchester Town Office, Tel: 01206 547616.

Calm down dear, but it looks like you have an
infestation of fairies in the house. They are evil little blighters. They can make things disappear and
re-appear at will. They have probably taken your car keys unlocked your car and stuffed the ball pens down between the front seat and
hand-brake just out of reach. They are selling your odd socks on eBay, and your watch is behind your ear though you will only feel it when
they want you to. Your lost control is certainly under the sofa with the rest of your remote controls. Getting rid of fairies is very difficult and
since Dumbledore died it's well nigh impossible. The best way is to get them on your side by leaving a saucer of organic panda milk out for
them at night.
