SHABOOM – The MP3 Power Bank 10W Stereo Boom Box I wanted to make a Boom Box for my MP3 player that lasted all day and had the ability to charge my MP3 player and any other small device that can be charged with 5V 2A USB source. This Boom box is based on the LA42102E 10W Audio Amplifier chip that runs off of 12V‐17V at max 140mA All parts for this project were made on a modified Thing‐O‐Matic 3D printer and a modified Shapeoko 2 CNC Machine. First thing was to create a circuit board for the chip. All I did was create a dxf design based on the test circuit
from the chip’s spec. sheet. I wanted to cut it out of a blank pcb with my Shapeoko. As you can see it is not
the prettiest and actually cut all the way through in spaces, but works great. It certainly isn’t small. This is
because of my inability to deal with smd components. So to use through hole components I had to create a
board that is 200mmx200mm. When I first cut this board from a blank one sided PCB I got on Ebay I realized it
was very hard to solder without bleeding over the routed gap and shorting my connections. So, before cutting
another board, I actually covered it in clear packing tape. Then cut the circuit design on my modified
Shapeoko2 and peeled of the tape along all traces. I found soldering easy after that.

The pins on the chip are small so I had to solder wires on each pin and there are 12 holes in the circuit board
for all 12 wires from the pins. The 13th pin isn’t used for anything.
I added a couple of heatsinks I had laying around and a 12V fan that draws 80mA. I wouldn’t recommend
using a smaller fan or no fan at all because this chip can really hot and become damaged otherwise. I learned
that the hard way. Glad I got 2 chips. ;+} Just for extra measures I added slots on one side of the enclosure
behind the fan for extra ventilation. Before I soldered all the circuits into the board I assembled them on a
breadboard to make sure everything worked first.

With my enclosure all cut and assembled I got everything in place. There are a pair of 8ohm 10W 2.5” full
range speakers. I decided to use 18650 Sony batteries. Was kind of costly but worth it ($40 total ). I attached
them in series. Four on each side so the charging capabilities are totally separate from the audio amplifier
functions. So, a total of 16.2V on each side when the 2 banks of batteries are fully charged.
**NOTE: ALWAYS USE A PROTECTION BOARD WHEN WORKING WITH AND CHARGING LITHIUM BATTERIES.
MAKE SURE IT’S DESIGNED FOR THE CONFIGURATION AND QUANTITY OF LITHIUM BATTERIES THAT YOU
ARE USING. SAFETY FIRST !

MP3 player plugged in from the cable that extends from the box and wraps around the handle for
convenience. The MP3 Player is attached to the top of the case with Velcro. I like this setup because I can
unwind it and change songs and volume easily while lounging on my back porch. There’s no Bluetooth
operation because my Sony Walkman has no Bluetooth capabilities. Just in case you were wondering. It has
good sound enhancement features and equalizer functions.

The charging of the unit is done by plugging in a Tenergy 1.5A Universal Smart Charger into the rear jacks.
Each side charges independently. The left side of the 3 position rocker switches activates the Boom box’s
functions – Amp. & Aux. Charging. The right side activates charging for each function – Amp Charging & Aux.

I can charge my MP3 player, Bluetooth adapter, Bluetooth earphones and more before the boom box auxiliary
charger needs charging. It will even put a decent charge on a cell phone. The digital meter shows how much
voltage is left in the batteries nothing else. That’s just the way the circuit board was made. It also had buttons
on it so I had to 3D print a button so when you press up the card turns on. When you press down on the
button a red light in the lower right corner of the LED screen illuminates and then it’s charging. I didn’t know
that when I bought it, so I just decided to work with it anyway. I don’t find it an inconvenience.
