June Exhibition Announced
at Lower Level Gallery
The City of Marquette Art and Culture Center Gallery is proud to present:
‘Lake Superior Lighthouses’ by local painting group, the Thursday
Painters. This group organized 59 years ago and includes Marjorie
Carlson, Rosemary Glenn, Esther Lepola, Shirley Michelson, and Helen
Steinhoff. The artists have employed various media including watercolors, oils, acrylics and pastels to create their artwork. In addition to lighthouses, they have included many other paintings with numerous subject
matter and styles in the exhibit.
‘Lake Superior Lighthouses’ will be on display at the Marquette Arts and
Culture Center Gallery on the lower level of the Peter White Library, at
217 North Front Street, Marquette. The exhibit will show from May 31st
through June 30th with a public reception for the artists in the Art Center
Gallery on Thursday, June 7th from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. The exhibit is sponsored by the Lake Superior Art Association.
The exhibit may be viewed during regular library hours at the City of
Marquette Arts and Culture Center.
Recycle
Those Old
Electronics
(SPM Wire) You may be coveting that latest and greatest cell phone or
tablet computer, but what should you do with your old ones?
Each year, Americans generate approximately 2.4 million tons of used
electronics, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and
the General Services Administration.
Don’t toss them out with the trash. Instead, recycle electronics at a certified "eCycling" facility, which lessens pollution and helps supports local
jobs.
Improper disposal of electronics, such as illegal dumping, can harm people and the environment through the release of such substances as lead
and mercury.
For more information about eCycling and to find local drop-off points,
visit www.epa.gov and search for “eCycling.”

A Beauty Routine
for Your Furniture
(Family Features) You nurture, protect and
care for the things you love. And, your furniture should be no exception. Whether it's a
family heirloom or a brand new piece, everyone has furniture they love that should be
cared for in the same way as they would
personally care for themselves. Caring for
home furnishings is more than dusting or giving an occasional polish; rather, it's about
nourishing, revitalizing and bringing out furniture's inner beauty. In a recent survey conducted by TheNest.com, nine out of 10 women say
they have either a basic or no understanding of
how to care for their furniture. And nearly half
(44.7 percent) of respondents think about cleaning only when it's time to entertain - which
means most furnishings are not properly taken
care of on a regular basis.
To help educate people and get them to rethink
traditional furniture cleaning, Guardsman, a furniture care pioneer for nearly 100 years, and TV
design star Tracy Hutson, have teamed up to
introduce furniture's new beauty routine. This
new furniture therapy mirrors beauty care
regimes like sunscreen and concealers, and
includes cleansing, polishing and, of course,
covering those tiny imperfections. "You wouldn't

Wood Care
* Dust - Use a non-scratch cloth to lightly
remove dust once a week. Always wipe the
cloth in the same direction of the wood grain.
* Clean - Use a for-wood-only cleanser once a
month. If it's a frequently used piece that tends
to attract spills, such as a kitchen table, clean
weekly. Spray the cleanser onto a cotton cloth
to help prevent spotting. Wipe in the direction
of the wood grain.
* Polish - Enhance and maintain wood's natural
luster by polishing it twice a month. Use a nowax, no-silicone product to restore natural radiance, free from greasy film and fingerprints.
Additional Special Care for Wood
* Moisturize - Oiled wood furniture needs to be
moisturized weekly to protect from water
stains, replenish lost oils and prevent cracking
and fading from sun damage. Hutson recommends Guardsman Revitalizing Lemon Oil.
* Repair Damage - Always keep touch-up products handy to cover up scratches and minor
blemishes.
Fabric Upholstery Care
* Proactively Protect - Spray fabric with a fabric protector that repels moisture and helps
prevent food and beverage stains from bonding
permanently to fibers. For the best protection,
spray fabric after any professional cleaning.

Take Back Your Backyard
From Insects This Season
Gardening With Kids
Teaches Healthy Habits
(StatePoint) School may be out for summer, but as a parent, you can ensure
there are plenty of opportunities for your children to learn new things throughout the vacation. Start with something fun, practical, and vital to health and
wellness. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, childhood obesity has more than tripled in the past 30 years. But you can fight this
trend with a hands-on lesson
in nutrition.
(StatePoint) Summer
means sunshine, relaxation and backyard barbecues. But it also
means the return of
insect season.
Homeowners work hard
on their backyards, but
the nuisance of pesky
flying insects often prevent them from enjoying
their yards as much as
possible.
Enjoy your backyard this summer with an insect
Not only are insects
trap like the Black Flag Flying Insect Trap & Lure.
annoying, they can be
dangerous too. Stinging
insects send over 500,000 people to the emergency room each year and an
estimated two million Americans are allergic to insect stings.
Don’t let bugs keep you from relaxing outdoors. Use these tips to take back
your yard from annoying pests.
Eat More Garlic
Garlic is heralded for its ability to ward off bloodsucking vampires; but did you
know eating garlic can repel bloodsucking insects as well? Garlic is excreted
through the pores and acts as a natural barrier to flying insects who don’t like
the smell.
Eliminate Dangerous Flying Insects
The key to insect control is early detection and elimination. Consider using
traps to eliminate bothersome bugs. Not all traps are eyesores. For example,
the Black Flag Flying Insect Trap and Lure attracts, traps, and kills wasps, yellow jackets and flies, and can be hung in a tree or staked in the ground; discreetly blending into any outdoor setting. It’s also safe for your family and pets.
More information is available at www.blackflag.com.
Wear Proper Clothes
Bees, wasps, and yellow jackets are attracted to bright colors and floral patterns. The color black also tends to irritate the insects. Wear light colors such
as khaki, beige, or white to avoid being stung.
Grow Plants and Herbs
Certain plants and herbs, such as rosemary, basil and thyme, emit odors that
ward off insects. Not only will these plants help deter unwanted pests; you’ll
also have some fresh herbs ready for cooking right in your backyard!
Grab a cold drink, kick back and relax in your yard. You won’t have bugs to
worry about anymore.
“Gardening is a great way to
bridge the summer learning
gap and promote a healthy
lifestyle,” said Shari Brown,
the winner of 2012 Toyota
Teacher of the Year Award.
“Not only will you be improving
your family’s nutrition by incorporating fresh fruits and vegetables into your meals, you’ll
be exposing your children to a
subject they may not learn
about in school.”
Brown, a North Carolina educator, was honored by the
National Center for Family
Literacy for her work helping
families learn together. She
plans to use her grant award
to create a community garden.
Brown is encouraging families
everywhere to learn together
while gardening. She has several tips to help you learn in
the garden:
• Involve your children in the process of picking out what type of plants to grow.
Then develop fun, nutritional meals together, such as veggie pizza and fruit
salad.
• Bugs are cool! Get your kids excited and curious about crucial garden critters
with library books, Internet sites, your local science center, videos and bug
games.
• Read stories about gardening with your children. Make a scrapbook about the
experience of growing your garden.
• Emphasize gardening and nutrition lessons in your home, too. Get your kids
watering the house plants and making sure they have enough sunlight. Teach
your kids what is compostable and have a discussion over dinner about where
all the food on their plate comes from, not just what you’ve grown yourself.
Expose them to a wide variety of new fruits, vegetables, plants and seasonings.
The fruits and veggies you harvest will be delicious, but your child’s knowledge
will be the most important thing you grow in the garden this summer.
