Take the Guesswork Out of Finding a Job
(Family Features)
Searching for a job can be
a daunting task—something too many Americans
know all too well. Job
seekers need to find creative ways to renew and
document their skills to
stand out from the crowd.
Gone are the days when
refreshing a resume and
customizing a cover letter
would give prospective
employees a shot at landing an interview. Now,
employers are looking for a
fool-proof way to know the
people they hire will be a
wise investment.
“Identifying and training
the right employee costs
time and money to already
strapped employers,” said
Martin Scaglione,
President of the Workforce
Development Division at
ACT. “Job seekers who
can document their skill
levels to prospective
employers before the interview process help
increase their chance of
success.”
The process begins with
preparation and planning.
The following steps can
help:
Plan – Before applying for
a job, find out what skill set
the job requires. ACT, best
known for its college
entrance exam, has one of
the largest, most robust
databases of occupational
skills available, with more
than 18,000 job titles. ACTauthorized job profilers
have analyzed the tasks
required to perform each
job, and identified the
essential skills required for
these tasks, allowing job
seekers to easily match
their skill levels to profiled
jobs.
Search – Applying for
dozens of positions online
likely leads to disappointment for most job seekers
as their inboxes fill with
spam rather than interview
invitations. Instead, start
by searching top job sites,
local job sites and sites
that focus on specific
career fields to begin the
search. Then, use online
tools, job boards and networking to help narrow the
choices and lessen the
chances of applying for
jobs that already have too
many applicants.
Apply – Most employers
get hundreds of online
resumes every day to fill a
limited number of posi-
tions. Some common tips
may help increase your
chance of success in the
resume screening process:
Follow the online application directions precisely.
The quickest way to be
eliminated is to ignore the
employer’s specific application process.
Place your computer/software skills together in a
list under one heading, and
all other skills under a separate heading.
Include acronyms with
spelled out versions to
make sure both are caught
in the screening process.
Proofread, proofread,
proofread. Then ask someone you trust to proofread
again before you submit
your paperwork.
Prove – Employers want to
make sure applicants are a
sure bet before they are
even hired. One of the
most efficient ways to
demonstrate skills is to
earn a widely respected,
evidence-based skills certification before applying
for a job. ACT’s National
Career Readiness
Certificate (NCRC) is made
up of three assessments
measuring essential workplace skills in math, reading and locating information. You may list your
Bronze, Silver, Gold or
Platinum NCRC on your
resume and a prospective
employer can log on to an
ACT website to verify your
accomplishment.
Job seekers can further
their chances for success
by taking the NCRC Plus;
which measures workrelated behaviors beyond
cognitive skills and ranks
individuals in four “soft
skill” categories important
to employers.
To learn more about the
NCRC, and to find a testing
center near you, visit
www.act.org/certificate.

Get Your Outdoor Spaces
Ready For Summer Living
(StatePoint) There’s no
better place than your own
backyard for relaxing,
entertaining and enjoying
the outdoors. And there’s
no better time than summer to spruce up your
space.
If you’re looking to
upgrade a humdrum yard
into something special,
here are some things to
consider:
A Great Idea For Do-it-Yourselfers
(SPM Wire) Warm weather is here! And for do-it-yourselfers this means
it’s time to get cracking on home renovations. If you’re planning a project
that requires lumber, consider forgoing newly cut wood for something
with a bit more history.
“Salvaged lumber is old growth wood, which means it’s stronger, has
tighter grains, and looks better than newer wood,” says Merritt Fine,
owner of M. Fine Lumber Company in New York City, which has been
reclaiming lumber from demolition sites for 75 years.
Whether you’re redoing your floors or building furniture, you’ll be giving
your project historical value and a totally unique look with recycled lumber. You’ll also be making an environmentally responsible choice -- a winwin situation.
Comfort
Trees and awnings aren’t
just great adornments for
your yard; they provide
much needed shade for
you to sit outdoors comfortably and safely.
Avoid summer mosquito
bites by placing birdbaths
and other standing water
structures far from lounging and eating areas.
Install LED yard lighting for
night, which is less likely to
attract mosquitoes than
incandescent lights.
Safety
When planning your space,
make safety a top priority.
Since evenings are primetime for summer entertaining, lighting is an essential
safety measure.
Start by considering where
you need to increase visibility. Choose post-mounted lanterns near driveways
and wall-mounted lanterns
next to doors for ease of
access and to welcome
guests. If underground
wiring is required, consult
an electrician or experi-
enced landscape lighting
contractor.
For deck stairs or terraced
paths, don’t forget step
lights to aid in navigation.
And thoroughly check outdoor railings, steps, decks
and porches to make sure
they are steady and that no
nails or boards have come
loose.
Beauty
Your yard is an extension
of your home, so don’t let
design and style fall by the
wayside when planning its
look.
For a touch of natural
beauty, consider planting a
flower garden to attract
butterflies and humming
birds.
“Illuminate paths and
define edges where the
garden or grass meet
walkways,” says Jeff
Dross, corporate director
of education and industry
trends for Kichler Lighting,
Save $5 Per Gallon
*
a leading supplier of outdoor and landscape lighting for consumers and
contractors.
The interplay of light and
shadow adds magic to the
night. By carefully placing
accent lights at upward or
downward angles and
using wall wash lighting,
you can silhouette trees
and direct shadows.
Capture the nighttime loveliness of water features
like ponds with LED lights
specially built for underwater illumination. For best
results, consult a landscape lighting expert.
More information on landscape lighting can be
found at
www.kichler.com or
www.landscapelighting.co
m. You can also receive
referrals to Kichler-certified landscape lighting
contractors by clicking
“Need a Contractor?”
Energy-Savings
Don’t let your exterior
spaces drive up your
home’s energy bills. New
LED deck and landscape
lights are low-maintenance, cost effective
options. Lasting up to
40,000 hours -- about 15
years -- these fixtures use
75 percent less energy
than incandescent lights.
“Since outdoor lighting is
often left on all night or for
many hours at a time, savings from LED lighting can
really add up,” Dross says.
Remember to avoid cheaper LED lights with a bluish
cast that many find unattractive. Opt instead for a
warm white light, such as
Kichler’s Design Pro LED
landscape lights.
Locally owned for over 23 years!

Don’t just dream about the
perfect outdoor space. For
a great season, transform
your yard into a beautiful,
fun place.

Trappers Celebrating 50 Years An Easy Way To Improve
Your Home’s Value
(StatePoint) Not all home improvements are created equally if you’re
looking for a clear return on investment.
This year Trapper Art will be showing convention goers how he caught 8000 Muskrats
in a single season. In this photo from the 2010 Convention, Art was showing trappers
how to catch Mink. Courtesy Mike Lewis.
ESCANABA – The U.P. Trappers Association was established on January 21, 1962 and is
celebrating fifty years of serving area trappers. The highlight of the year will be a
Special 50th Anniversary Convention being held on July 13 & 14 in the Butler Building at
the Upper Peninsula State Fairgrounds in Escanaba. Area trappers can expect to save
money on needed supplies, hone their skills, and have a great time – and other outdoor
enthusiasts and those wishing to find out more about trapping can enjoy the convention,
too. The building is filled with vendors including crafters, magazine publishers, taxidermists, a gun dealer, a welder (custom welding and unique “horseshoe art,” representatives from two wild fur Auction Houses, quilters, predator hunting and calling suppliers,
etc. – and dozens of trapping supply dealers. Of special interest to trappers and predator callers are several hour-long demonstrations by some of the country’s top trappers,
callers and fur handlers. Trappers of all skill levels can expect to walk away with some
valuable pointers. ALL OF THE DEMOS ARE FREE – what would it cost you for personal
instruction from a Predator Caller like Les Johnson, who has won Midwest, National
and World Championships? Or from Trapper Art who caught 8000 Muskrats this past
season? Les and Art are only two of the talented demonstrators at this year’s convention! The event is open to the public and admission for adults is $2.00. Sixteen and
under are admitted free. You can camp right on the grounds for only $20.00 a night—
including water, electricity, and available showers. Lots of reasonable motels in
Escanaba too!
And at the DNR Pocket Park there will be FREE fishing for the kids supervised by volunteers for the Normenco Sportsman’s Club, doing everything they can to keep the kids
smiling, reeling in fish, and winning prizes.
Letter
Carriers
Collect Food
for Local
Food Pantries
On Saturday, May 12, 2011, as they delivered mail, Marquette postal workers collected
food donations to help re-stock local food pantries. “Stamp Out Hunger” is a nationwide effort by the National Association of Letter Carriers and the United Way, although
each location organizes its own efforts.
Larry Kuhn, of the Marquette Post Office reported that 14,700 pounds of food were collected in Marquette this year. This is 900 pounds more than was collected last year.
The workers were pleased to see the large amounts of participation by area residents
this year.
As the mail carriers brought the food back to the Post Office, it was divided up and distributed to St. Vincent DePaul, Salvation Army of Marquette, Harbor House, Janzen
House and Voices for Youth to help fill their dwindling pantries. The need for food for all
agencies has increased with economic conditions, and the agencies welcome food and
monetary donations any time of year to help them serve a growing number of clients.
Letter carriers in Negaunee and Ishpeming and towns and cities all across the country
participate in this collection. Nationwide, over a billion pounds of food have been collected through the efforts of the many local branches and the participation of residents.
The National Association of Letter Carriers, the United Way of Marquette County and
the agencies that received the donations would like to thank the generous citizens of
Marquette who stepped it up this year to help keep people in our community fed.
But according to the National Association of Realtors, a bathroom
upgrade is a good bet, yielding a 64.1 percent return on what you spend.
And to do it well an architect can help, says the American Institute of
Architects. He or she will work with you to determine a plan of action for
meeting your goal.
It could be a simple change, such as adding flex lighting for ambience,
or more complex, like extensive remodeling, to completely redo the
space.

space visit http://architectfinder.aia.org

Grab Life by the Handlebars with Expert Cycling Tips
(Family Features) When the
weather is warm, bikers everywhere hear the trails calling
their name. Well-known
endurance sports coach Chris
Carmichael and award winning
professional cyclist George
Hincapie share nine tips to help
you gear up for your ride.
Whether you're hitting the
pavement, dirt trails or rugged
terrain, these two cycling
superstars promise to help you
cycle further, longer and safer
this summer.
Build Strength: In between
rides, build strength in your
legs, arms and back. Bulking up
these muscle groups will prevent injury and increase
endurance every time you get
back on your ride.
Go The Distance: Perseverance
is half the battle when it comes
to cycling, so with every ride,
tell yourself you'll go a little far-
ther. Every extra mile will add
up to give you much-needed
endurance, which will come in
handy whether you're exploring
a new trail or taking on your
first triathlon.
Get Loose: Relax your arms and
keep your elbows unlocked.
Keeping your body loose while
riding helps you better absorb
the shock from bumps in the
road.
Gear Up: When it comes to
tracking your goals, today's
technology offers a variety of
ways to measure your progress,
making it easier than ever to
reach your peak and go beyond
it. Our personal favorite is
Motorola's MOTOACTV, the allin-one GPS touch screen
cycling computer and smart
MP3 player, helping you to stay
focused and motivated on any
ride.
Stay Seated: Trying to scale an
incline? It'll be harder if you're
standing up. When biking uphill,
resist the urge to stand and
pedal, and instead shift your
gears down and conserve energy by staying in your seat.
Hydrate: The more you cycle
the more your body craves fluids in order to replace what you
lose in sweat. During the summer, it's particularly important
to stay hydrated throughout the
duration of your ride.
Release the Power of Your
Playlist: Your playlist is more
than just songs to workout to;
they're songs that push you to
work - up a hill, during that last
mile, on a sweltering day.
Before hitting the trail, create
your ultimate get-moving
playlist to ensure you stay pedaling hard your whole ride.
Switch It Up: Change up your
body position while riding to
avoid cramps and stressing
specific muscles.
Remember, while it's great to
test your boundaries and
achieve your goals, be sure to
put your health and safety first.
Armed with the right mentality
and tips, there's no limit to what
you can achieve. Visit
www.MOTOACTV.com for more
cycling advice from the experts
and to learn more about
MOTOACTV.

KILL
A Business
In 10 Easy Steps
1. Don’t Advertise!
Just pretend everyone knows what

to spend thinking about promoting
your business.

Just assume everyone knows what
you sell.

Convince yourself that you’ve been
in business so long customers will
automatically come to you.

customers who would do business
with you if they were reminded and
urged to do so.

from you.
