JULY 2013
Dear Alumni/ae, friends, and
supporters of Marquette:
Last year at about this time I asked
you a question about whether you
ever wondered what it would be
like to be a principal at a small,
Catholic High School. I actually
received a pretty good response and
many people thought I was really
lucky.
Well, let me tell you, some years are better than others, and
this past year was a doozy.
It began with us starting a major construction project for
the first time in over three decades. Now you might think
that is neat—but it plays havoc on teachers, students, and
administrators. The noise and dust was tough to deal with.
But the worst thing was when they discovered asbestos in
the locker rooms and decided that we would have to shut
down for a while. That “while” put us back two weeks, so
we didn’t begin school until after Labor days (I know—just
like in the old days). Then, like I said, we had issues with
noise and dust. But we persevered and got through the first
semester.
Second semester we actually opened the new commons
area, locker rooms, and most importantly, restrooms. So,
you would think that it was a smoother second semester.
Except, we now had to pursue a complete update of our
infrastructure to accommodate putting I-pads in every
freshman students hands next school year. It seemed all we
did was have meeting after meeting. But I am glad to report
that it appears the infrastructure wiring and access points are
in and we are ready to proceed with the purchasing of I-pads.
All in all it was a stressful and tiresome school year with
all we had going on. But it’s done now. On the bright side
we did bring home some impressive trophies from the
IHSA state competitions; a first in boy’s soccer, a second in
softball, and a third in girl’s soccer. Not bad for a little school
that gets bumped up a class or two in most every sport
(except soccer).
I would like to note that our graduation speaker this year
was Dr. Bill Sears of the class of 1957. Dr. Sears lives in
California and has become a world renowned authority on
pediatrics. I would quote his speech, but he didn’t write
anything down. He just took the microphone, walked in
front of the graduates, and proceeded to give (from his head)
one excellent speech. You could tell he has a long history of
speaking to audiences because he held everyone’s attention.
And finally, if you haven’t heard, then you haven’t been
listening, but our enrollment should exceed 400 this
upcoming school year. We haven’t been over 400 in a
couple decades. So, things are going well. Stop by and see
us sometime and I’ll give you a tour of the building and
especially the new areas.

Memorial Bricks
Outside the 1927 building (the main building) is our
memorial walkway complete with bricks, blocks, and
benches memorializing loved ones.
We will continue selling these memorials until we run
out of room—which for the bricks ($50) and blocks
($150) should be never. We will always be able to find a
spot for them. Right now I do have space for four more
benches ($1500 outside the new gym entrance). So, if
you want a bench you might want to act quickly.
If Marquette is listed as the memorial in remembrance
of a family member or friend—we automatically buy a
brick for that person. So, we may have a brick out there
on someone’s behalf that you weren’t aware of.
These permanent memorials make great gifts—
especially for graduates!!

What a Difference
a Year Makes
The summer of 2012 brought a lot
of changes to the MCHS Campus.
Demolition of the courtyard and
surrounding hallway followed by
the construction of what we are now
calling “The Commons”. The work
also brought air conditioning among
many other upgrades to the entire 1957
building. Students from the Class of
2014 and beyond will never again
experience lunch in a warm cafeteria on
a fall day or PE in a gym hot enough to
melt your sneakers.
All of the work was completed in
January of 2013. This summer began
with the dedication of the Commons by
Bishop Paprocki. He placed a blessing
upon the Commons and congratulated
us on the physical growth of the
campus. He then challenged us to
continue to grow the Catholic ministry.
He said now that the bricks and mortar
are finished we must continue to build
the Body of Christ.
The summer will end when we
welcome our largest freshman class
in about 30 years (approximately 131
students). The school’s enrollment will
The Capital Campaign raised $6,135
from the following donors who
responded to our email requests in the
month of May. Their contributions
were matched 100% by an anonymous
donor for total contributions of
$12,270.
The Capital Campaign still must
raise $100,000 to help fund the
physical improvements to the school,
technology upgrades and contributions
to the Marquette Foundation
Endowment.
Thank you to all who have contributed
to the success of the Capital Campaign

once again be over 400 students. This
is a real tribute to the hard work of the
Administration and new alumni from
the recent years. I can’t help but think
that the improvements to the campus
have made a positive impression on the
middle school students and their parents
when considering alternatives for high
school.
All of these improvements (See Side
Box listing improvements) were made
possible by the generous donations of
the Alumni and friends of Marquette
Catholic High School. The goal has
always been $3,000,000. Since the
construction began in 2012 we have
continued to move closer to reaching
our goal. Today we find the campaign

as students of Marquette we all know
93% on a test is barely an “A”. On this
test the only acceptable score is 100%
(or better!).
The Foundation was established to
raise money for the benefit of the
School. Whether it was for capital
improvements or building the
endowment, we want to make sure that
an education at Marquette is available
to every student and that we have the

Four Years of Sports
Graduating Senior Andrew Myer remembers his four years of sports at Marquette. Andrew was
the Student Athletic Director and worked the clock at all the girls and boys basketball games in
the Marquette gym. He donned his blue and white striped overalls at many games throughout
the years. Most of us at Marquette would consider him a number one fan.
Andrew came to us from Our Lady Queen of Peace in Bethalto in 2009. We will hand him over
to Maryville University this fall to study sports management. We wish him and his entire class
of 2013 well!
Here is what he put together to summarize his four years of sports at Marquette 2009-2013:

Softball qualified for State my freshmen year.
She said,”We are going to State to support them

can say is, “Thanks for the memories and what a
run it was.”

Dr. Bill Sears spoke
at the graduation
ceremony for the
Marquette class
of 2013. He told
the students to do
something with their lives that will
help people. “You want to go to sleep
at night with a Helper’s heart. You
want to know you helped someone.
Don’t go into a profession to make
money, go into something that you
love and you know will help people.
Dr. Bill shared some stories of his
days at Marquette and especially his
time with a special teacher Sr. Ursula
or “Little Bear.”
He gave the students some advice
and told them to put all negative
thoughts into the “Junk mailbox”
of their minds. “Every night just go
through your thoughts like email. Get
rid of the bad stuff. Keep the good
stuff,” he told them.
Dr. Bill is the father of eight children
and several of them are practicing with
him in California. He has published
several books including “The Baby
Book” and was recently on the cover
of Time Magazine. Thank you for
sharing your words of wisdom with us.

“Being involved with social service
agencies is something I’ve done for a
long time and is what I really enjoy,”
he said. “It makes you feel good to
help others. You start out wanting to
help people but you get so much joy
in return too.” Sounds like Marquette

After a 37 year career as President of
Altonized Community Federal Credit
Union, Rick Sebold has decided to
retire. Rick started his career in the
Accounting Department of OwensIllinois and worked there for nine
years. That’s when he transferred to
Altonized. “A lot of people still come
in here from Owens-Illinois where I
worked first. I like the whole aspect of
the credit union business, especially
helping people. I have enjoyed all
these years of being able to help
people. I tried to keep it a familyoriented business, “he said.
Rick and his wife Dorie are part of a
big family of Marquette graduates.
His brothers, sisters and two children
attended Marquette as well. Rick and
Dorie’s son, Bernie Sebold, Class of
1992, is the Alton Fire Chief and lives
in Alton. Their daughter Jennifer
Spangler (Class of 1993) is the new

father’s shoes. Jennifer has worked
with Rick at Altonized for 20 years.
As for retirement, Rick is planning
to work part-time at Elias, Kallal and

greeter for visitations and funerals. It
seems he cannot retire from his career
of helping people in the community.
We wish you all the best.

Teresa Cranmer continues to head
the Mustard Seed Peace Project she
founded in 2004. This group was
formed following a mission trip to
Guatemala that truly inspired Cranmer
and led to what she believes is her
life’s work. On a trip in 2012, Cranmer
said the residents asked for help to
address water problems. The women
have to walk very far to get water
from the wells. They have to stand
in long lines and many have children
in tow while trudging along a rugged
path carrying the water. Sometimes
the women spend their whole day
providing water for their families. To
address this issue, MSPP partnered
with Engineers without Borders from
SIUE and is working on a project to
install a water pump and holding tank
that can pump water into individual
homes, freeing up hours for the
women. Teresa also led an initiative
for $46 table top water purifiers that
changed the lives of Guatemalan
residents in the village of Virginia.
The filters provide clean drinking
water without the need to gather wood,
build a fire and boil it before it is safe,
a process that often still isn’t 100
percent effective.
The Mustard Seed project has
partnered with Lewis and Clark
Community College’s nursing
school as well as Engineers without
Borders of SIUE. They hold periodic
fundraisers and additional funding
is gained through private donations
and grants. If you are interested in
volunteering or making donations,

Decatur. Jessica is in the Physician’s
Assistant program at SLU and should
graduate in 2015.
Class of 2012
Jack Kane was named St. Louis
University’s Most Improved Male
Swimmer for 2012-2013. Jack’s top
times in the 100-yard breaststroke
(56.67 seconds) and 200 yard
breaststroke (2:07:52) were good
enough to place him among the team
leaders in both events. Both times
are the second fastest of the season
for the Billikens and the third fastest
in team history. Jack is majoring in
engineering and will be a sophomore
next year.
Welcome Fr. Bill Kessler (Class of 1989)
as the new Campus Chaplain at Marquette!
Fr. Bill has served as a priest of the Diocese of Springfield-in-Illinois since May 29, 1999. He is a
graduate of the University of Saint Mary of the Lake (’99), Saint Louis University (’93), Marquette
Catholic High School (’89), and Saint Ambrose Grade School. In his time as a priest he has served in
many different localities including, Springfield, Effingham, Calhoun County, Pana, Oconee and now
as the full time priest in Brighton and Medora. He is a member of the Knights of the Holy Sepulchre,
an organization which supports the Catholic Christian community throughout the Holy Land., and
a Knight of Columbus. He is eager to be a presence of Christ in the MCHS community in his position of on campus
Chaplain. An ardent sports fan (especially football and wrestling) both of which he competed in as an MCHS student) he
will be out and about as the student athletes of MCHS compete in the Riverbend area.
Bishop Paprocki Runs
Marquette 5k in Alton
“Can you beat the Bishop?” That was the
challenge we gave to the students and
participants of the 6th annual Marquette
Catholic High School 5k fun run and
walk in Alton earlier in May.
Taking the challenge to heart, Jake
Decker, a 16-year-old from Hazelwood,
MO won the race this year with a time
of 18:39. Eileen Petito from Alton led the women with a time of 20:15. The
Strebel family from St. Mary’s in Alton took the challenge seriously and each
member won a medal in their age group. Elyse Strebel won 2nd place overall for
the women. Ray Strebel won 2nd place overall for the men and their son Jeremy
won first place in the pre high school group. Ray graduated is a 1990 graduate
and Jeremy will be a freshman at Marquette next year.
Almost 200 runners and walkers participated this year and Bishop Paprocki
won the medal for the first Bishop to get through the finish line and won first
place in his age group. The Bishop awarded all winners with their medals at the
assembly after the race.
The senior class of 2014 worked very hard setting up the course and serving as marshalls during the race. The proceeds
from the Marquette 5k will go to their senior mission trip on the spring of 2014.
Phenoms (According to Principal Michael E. Slaughter)
Since 1970 I have seen and coached way too many great athletes to begin to mention. However, during that 43 year
period I can think of only three phenoms. By phenom I mean someone that is so remarkable in their sport, that no one
else approaches their God-given talents.
Any guesses who I think of as phenoms??
In order of graduation year first would be Craig Hentrich of the class of 1989. Did you ever see him kick or punt a
football? I know many of you did. You probably also came to our football games an hour and a half early just to see the
show he would put on. He didn’t get a scholarship to Notre Dame for nothing. He then went on to be a pro-bowl punter
in the NFL. That is what I mean by a phenom.
Second comes Mary Ellen Jacobs of the class of 2003. Probably not as many
of you ever saw her hit a golf ball as maybe saw Craig punt, but I guarantee
you she hit it straighter and further than most of us men. She received a
scholarship in golf to Tulane University in New Orleans. But after hurricane
Katrina did its thing, she moved on to Arizona. Today she is a professional in
California.
The last phenom just graduated.
That would be Alexis Silkwood.
She holds just about every
pitching record there is to hold in Illinois including wins, shutouts, nohitters, and strikeouts. She also was an extraordinary hitter. She earned
herself a scholarship to Mississippi State and only time will tell what she
makes of her future.
I am not saying this is the definitive list—it’s just my list. Who did I leave
out?? Food for thought.

Marquette Dinner/Auction –
HUGE SUCCESS!
Luck of the Irish was the theme for
this year’s annual dinner/auction
and Luck is what we had!! (maybe
some wouldn’t find it luck) with a
sold out crowd and over 300 auction
items Marquette’s dinner auction was
truly a success! When we look back
on the event and ask – what did we
do different this year? We have to
say – we listened to “ALL” of our
loyal Marquette Alumni, family and
friends! What can we do differently
to keep making this an event continue
to grow bigger and better…. I believe
in my heart with all the loyal families
we have attending Marquette right
now that is our success. Our school
continues to grow and alumni always
step up to the plate for us when we
need them.
A special thanks goes to Barb Gable,
Patty Craig, Amy Bamper, Jill Schulz,
Patty Morrissey, Chris Jones, Fred
Hornsey, Joe and Ann Thuet, Julie &
Tom Smith, Ron & Diane Root, Tom
Tavolacci, Maggie Sholar (all of the
workers the evening of the auction)
Kathy Wittich (all the checkout
workers), everyone who helped
Thursday evening putting the books
together, Friday workers loading
the cars and setting up and all my
Sunday clean-up workers. I am sure
I am forgetting someone and I truly
apologize if I am…
Mark your calendars and get ready for
another fabulous auction – Saturday,
March 29, 2014.

Werts, Tom Fleming, Monica Bristow,
Ed Kasten, Craig Dixon, Kathy Smith
