At its best, a liberal arts education prepares you for a life worth living — and gives you the knowledge and insight to help make the world a better place in which to live. That may sound like a lofty goal, but trust us — it’s in great demand among employers. A liberal arts education teaches you how to examine an idea and judge its truth and worth. You learn how to defend your beliefs and communicate them with passion. You learn how to interact and empathize with people whose ideas aren’t identical to your own. You will think “outside the box” to creatively solve a problem. The College at Florham now offers a criminology major. Simply stated, that is our educational promise to you at the College at Florham, whether you’re majoring in finance or film, education or economics. A foundation in the liberal arts will prepare you for a lifetime of personal and professional growth because you don’t simply “learn a skill” — you “learn how to learn.” We deliver on that promise by providing you with outstanding teachers, exceptional personal attention and support, and unforgettable learning experiences. That is the difference you’ll find at the College at Florham. 24 • fdu.edu/visit 16614 Intl VB Florham Section v2_Layout 1 7/30/12 9:06 PM Page 4 We’re Living History! It’s hard not to be impressed with our surroundings. The College at Florham is located on part of what was once the country estate of Florence Vanderbilt and Hamilton Twombly, well-known socialites in the early 1900s. Frederick Law Olmstead, who is best known for creating New York City’s Central Park, designed our expansive campus grounds. The centerpiece of campus is a 100-room mansion, which now houses classrooms and offices. Built in the 1890s by the renowned architect Stanford White, it is a replica of a wing in King Henry VIII’s Hampton Court. Honors Programs at the College at Florham C O L L E G E AT F L O R H A M Because of our liberal arts education focus, it’s no surprise that honors programs are important to our educational opportunities. Do you like to dig deeper when it comes to learning? Our challenging classes, invigorating projects and dedicated faculty mentors can take your learning to the next level. Becton College Honors offer students the opportunity to pursue discipline-based honor studies in their major. The University Honors Program offers gifted students a learning experience that extends far beyond traditional undergraduate studies through special courses, faculty mentors, independent study and research projects. The Florham Scholars is a residential honors program for freshmen. Students live and study together as they explore their interests in one of these areas: arts and humanities, business, global studies or science. Encouraging Learning All Around You Because the College at Florham focuses on the undergraduate experience, there are countless opportunities for students to explore their majors and grow professionally. A corporate mentor program links top students with area executives to network and learn about an industry. Students can earn up to 12 credits (depending on their major) doing student-faculty research in majors ranging from biology to political science. A special fund has been created at the College at Florham to support off-campus learning experiences. Students have been funded to attend a student conference on peace at Brandeis University; a meeting of the New York Association of Analytical Psychologists and a field trip to the International Center of Photography, to name just a few. 25 16614 Intl VB Florham Section v2_Layout 1 7/30/12 9:06 PM Page 5 24/7 Student Life at the C Living on Campus Nearly 1,500 students live in our 13 residence halls, where you’ll discover the joys of personal independence — and plenty of opportunities for social interaction, too. Most first-year students live in the Twomblies, two side-by-side, traditional-style residence halls located near the Student Center. They’re just the right size for getting to know your classmates and meeting new friends. You’ll also participate in programs designed to introduce you to our campus and the region, like special lectures, trips to New York City, getaway ski weekends and more. Our Academic Support Center also is located in the Twomblies. It’s the place to go — day or night — for free tutoring in your toughest subjects, foreign language labs, and help in time management and study skills. There’s even a computer lab, complete with printers and specialized software. Housing for upperclassmen includes The Village (nine halls with suite-style accommodations), Rutherford Hall (double rooms and private bath) and Park Avenue (apartment-style living). Planning to Commute? While most students live on campus, our “road scholars” at the College at Florham are among our most involved student leaders. (And our comfortable commuter lounge is sure to be your second home.) Where to Eat? There are a variety of campus eateries, from full service to fast food, including: Main Dining Hall — Choose from a variety of daily hot entrees or “create your own meal” with our wok, pasta, salad, deli and ice cream stations; Nathan’s® — For hot dogs, fries and create-your-own sandwiches; and The Grill, Florham Perk Café and Snax for quick bites. Florham Fact Wednesdays are usually class-free days at the College at Florham to give you the chance to study and attend club meetings. It’s our way of helping you get involved and manage your time! 26 • fdu.edu/visit 16614 Intl VB Florham Section v2_Layout 1 7/30/12 9:06 PM Page 6 Student Organizations at the College at Florham Student Service Organizations Commuter Student Association Florham Programming Committee Student Government Association (SGA) Multicultural Clubs & Organizations Asian Culture Club Association of Black Collegians Bombay Club German Club Latino American Student Organization Proud Italian Student Association (PISA) e College at Florham Things to Do, Places to Go Recent Campus Happenings Sample some of our stimulating academic and fun social events: • Homecoming • Greek Week • Open Mic Nights • Apollo Amateur Night • Street Hip Hop Workshop • Sleep Out 4 the Homeless • Cinco de Mayo Barbecue • Fright Fest • Hot Topics: Domestic Violence and Dating Abuse • Résumé Workshop: “Would You Like Fries with That?” • UN Videoconference: Nuclear Nonproliferation • Toys for Tots Holiday Party • Celebrity Basketball Tournament • “Into the Woods” (there are four major campus theater productions each year) • Spring Ball in Lenfell Hall • Health & Wellness Fair • Disney Movie Night • WAMFEST (Words & Music Festival) • Habitat for Humanity project in Morristown Organizations of Faith Campus Crusade for Christ Hillel Melodies of Heaven Gospel Choir Academics/Professional Clubs & Organizations Accounting Society Chemistry Club Film Guild Finance Club Marketing Mix Student Education Outreach Fraternities Alpha Kappa Lambda Iota Phi Theta Lambda Theta Phi Phi Sigma Kappa Sigma Chi Tau Kappa Epsilon Zeta Beta Tau Sororities Delta Phi Epsilon Phi Sigma Sigma Theta Phi Alpha Zeta Tau Alpha Greek Governing Bodies Inter-Fraternity Council Inter-Greek Council Panhellenic Council Student Media The Pillar (student newspaper) Scribblers Literary Society WFDM Radio Station Intramural Sports Basketball Karate Softball Touch Football Volleyball 27 C O L L E G E AT F L O R H A M There are literally hundreds of events and programs (over 320!) on campus each year, the majority of which are organized and managed by our students.
