William Morton Collegiate Year-End The WMCI community is committed to providing a safe and stimulating environment in order to promote individual excellence, to foster responsible citizenship, and to develop students who can manage their futures in a changing society. Secretary: Christine Poschenrieder Phone: 385-2845 [email protected] Principal: Shannon Blondeau Fax: 385-3031 www.pinecreeksd.mb.ca Green Warriors The Green Warriors of 2014-2015 worked hard to promote environmental awareness within WMCI and our community. Our Warriors continue to think of new ways to make people aware of the impact they have on the environment. We planned and carried out Earth Week activities and participated in We Day with the Social Justice Warriors to inform our students and community about the good, the bad and the ugly concerning the environment we all share. Our Warriors worked hard to aid in the recycling of tons of batteries, bottles, cans, paper and cellphones that would have otherwise ended up in a landfill. (We unfortunately had to stop our printer cartridge recycling due to a problem with Think Recycle. The printer cartridges we have received will be recycled with a different company, but we do not have the capacity or funds to continue printer and ink cartridge recycling.) Our garden has been started and we experimented with composting this year to prepare for our future plans of a greener school that uses more sustainable food and produces less wet waste. We encourage all those interested in helping the environment to join our club for the upcoming school year. We will need help with gardening, composting and implementing the many green ideas we have as a club. Mr. Watson A Year-End Reminder to all students to return school jerseys, hand in library books, clean out gym lockers and regular lockers. Text books will also be collected in the coming weeks as class-work finishes. All our staff members encourage students to study and prepare well in the final days before exams. Warriors For Change This year was a great year! We began with our annual We Scare Hunger food drive, and then had our big event for the year: We Day Gladstone! Much of our fundraising has been toward our Call to Action - supporting Education in Haiti through Free the Children. Our last campaign this year was the Backpack Attack. We have collected enough supplies to give at least three families a better start at school next year! Thanks so much for all your support, Warriors! All items will be donated to the Portage Family Abuse Prevention Center. Mr. Pugh 1 WMCI Track Report The very large WMCI track and field team has been extremely busy over the course of May and June, attending invitational meets in both Winnipeg and Selkirk. Considering the early spring and poor weather for competing at these meets, some very good results and experience was obtained. The team did well considering the top track teams in the province were in attendance at this meet such as Sisler, Kelvin, Selkirk and Warren. A number of top ten finishes were achieved by Audrey Morrison and Troy Tonn. The largest team ever from WMCI (55 athletes) participated in the Zone meet in Neepawa on May 26 th. The hot conditions were hard on our athletes but we had 24 athletes qualify for the Provincials in Winnipeg on June 4, 5, and 6th. Only the athletes who placed in the top three in Neepawa are able to compete in the Provincial Track and Field Championships. Results are as follows for those who finished in the top 3: Hailey McCaskill 3rd in Multi Event Shayla Marohn 2nd in 800m and 3rd in 1500m Taryn Winters 1st in High Jump Amanda Doell 2nd in Multi Event Kelsey Tonn 1st in Multi Event Marie Lou Schneeberger 2nd in Triple Jump, 2nd in Hurdles Sonya Strocen 1st in 1500m and 1st in 3000m Megan Sollner 1st in 1500m and 2nd in 3000m Paycen Warkentin 3rd in Long Jump Chayse Warkentin 2nd in High Jump Josh Blondeau 2nd in Triple Jump and 3rd in Multi Event Junior Richard 3rd in Shot Put and 3rd in Discus Clay Ferguson 2nd in 1500m and 2nd in 3000m Brendan Cowan 1st in Multi Event Troy Tonn 3rd in Long Jump and 1st in 400m Keiana Fehr 1st in Discus Danielle Cadieux 2nd in Shot Put Audrey Morrison 2nd in the 100m and 1st in Long Jump Carter Schettler 2nd in 400m and 1st in 200m Eric Bjarnarson 2nd in Shot Put Leonard Durose 3rd in Shot Put Quinton Peters 3rd in 3000m and 2nd in 1500m Pryce Sollner 1st in 800m Steven Teichrib 3rd in the High Jump There were also 11 relay teams that WMCI assembled and many ran their hardest to earn points for our school. By doing so, the Relay teams did very well with numerous first through fifth place finishes. There were many other athletes who competed very hard and finished in the top eight as well. Mr. Watson and I would like to personally thank all those athletes who volunteered to come to Zones (even with badgering from the coaches) to help our school compete for the Zone banner. Mr. Koshel & Mr. Watson 2 Student Council News The end of the 2014-2015 school year has arrived! Student Council is in full swing preparing for next year, as well as wrapping up this year’s work. We had a great number of things happening at the end of May and early June. Our Grade Eight orientation was in the last week of May, as well as the beginning of our elections. We also had our annual water day, complete with a Slip 'n Slide and fire trucks!! Our new council will be busy organizing for the Grad Farewell BBQ on the day of grad rehearsal, as well as organizing activities for the first day back! Our elections were held on the first of June and our Student Council for the 20152016 school year is as follows: President: Kristen Gall Vice President: Danielle Cadieux Treasurer: Kelsey Tonn Secretary: Lindsay Dayholos Social Convener: Madison Hiller Sports Representatives: Mandy Doell and Clay Ferguson General Council Members: Sam Brown, Allison Trimble, Kiersten Sanderson, Hayley McCaskill, Garrett Gall, Kathryn Bresnahan, Sonya Strocen, Taryn Winters, Hanna Sollner, Audrey Morrison, and Kayla Fehr. Kristen Gall BOYS’ BASEBALL The last newsletter congratulated the WMCI Boys Baseball team on their Zone 7 Championship win over the Neepawa Tigers on May 21 and wished them luck at the MHSAA Baseball Provincials in Cartwright/Baldur on May 28-30. The team travelled to Baldur early Thursday morning through pouring rain only to arrive in Baldur with the sun shining for the first game against Garden Valley. Unfortunately, the Warriors dropped a 6-2 decision to Garden Valley in the one and only game played that day. The Warriors returned to action the next day against the Dauphin Regional Clippers. An excellent yet nail-biting game to watch, the Warriors defeated the Clippers 4-3 and placed WMCI second in their pool. This led us to semi-final action against Northlands Parkway Nighthawks. It was a close game for the first 4 innings (Tied 2-2) when the Nighthawks pulled ahead to win 10-2. The Warriors finished their season ahead of last year and that was the goal. All-Stars chosen for the semi-final game included Josh Blondeau, Danny Hall, Wyatt Harder, Carter Schettler and Troy Tonn. Thank you to Todd Tonn for coaching the team this year, and to Wayne Schettler for assisting during Zone Playoffs and Provincials. To our graduating players…….. #13 Josh Blondeau (CF/C), #7 Brendan Cowan (RF), #24 Braeden Funk (2B/P), #17 Danny Hall (SS/3B), #33 Wyatt Harder (RF), #6 Kain Kramer (P/1B), #2 Troy Tonn (SS/P), and #4 Chayse Warkentin (3B/1B). Thank you for your commitment to the team over your years at WMCI. Your skill and talent will be missed greatly! Hopefully, you continue to play and enjoy the game you love. To the fans…..thank you for your continued support!! See you next Spring! Mrs. Salmon Travel Club—Reflections from a Graduate I had an amazing time on my trip with EF Tours! It was an entertaining and eye-opening experience that I was able to share with my friends. On our trip we travelled to Ireland, Wales, England, and France. Ireland was my favorite country that we visited. We went on a jaunting cart tour, saw the beautiful Killarney National Park, the Ring of Kerry, Blarney Castle, Cashel Rock, St. Patrick's Cathedral and many other breathtaking sights. Personally I believe Dublin was the most interesting and fun city we stopped at. The people were very friendly, there was a lot to do and see in your spare time, and the city was full of unique historic sites. These sites include the Guinness Storehouse, which some of us toured, and Trinity College where we were able to see the Book of Kells. The other countries we travelled to on our tour were also very interesting and enjoyable. Our tour of Wales included driving through Snowdonia National Park and trekking through Beaumaris Castle, which was one of my favorites. While in England we visited Shakespeare's birthplace, Oxford, London, and Greenwich. I really enjoyed the city of Oxford where we were able to see the beautiful University buildings, the Ashmolean Museum, and spend some time shopping downtown. An excursion on our trip was touring the Windsor Castle. This excursion was incredible. It was fascinating to see the different architectural elements of the castle that were built in different eras and the Changing of the Guards. During our bus tour of Paris we saw the Arc du Triumph, Notre Dame, and the Eiffel Tower. We went on a boat tour called Paris By Night where we cruised down the Seine River and saw the city all lit up. When the Eiffel Tower's lights begin to sparkle it is breathtaking. My favorite times in Paris were climbing the Eiffel Tour, touring Notre Dame, our short two hours at the Louvre, and our time spent at Sacré-Coeur. The trip with EF Tours opened my eyes and made me want to learn more about the different cultures around the world. I enjoy experiencing and trying new things and going on this trip made me realize this. After graduating I travelled to Australia and New Zealand where I tried things I never would have before. During my time in Australia and New Attention Gr. 9 & 10 students! Zealand I was introduced to new cultures which were very interesting to experience WMCI’s next EF Tour is in 2017 and learn about. EF Tours opened my eyes and encouraged me to see new sights. I to Greece, Athens and the Aegean may never have made the new friends I did, surfed, bungee-jumped, or maybe even Sea! For more information see travelled if I had not gone on the EF Tours school trip! I hope to travel and learn Mrs. Smith in November or talk to more about other places in the future. The yearly event began at lunch with a BBQ featuring hotdogs and hamburgers grilled to perfection by the students on their own fabricated BBQs. In attendance were students from Langruth, Plumas and Gladstone Elementary School and many community members as well as guest builders from Carman, Manitoba. The Gladstone Fire Department and Paramedic Services were also in attendance. The afternoon featured exciting races that highlighted the students’ mechanical and fabricating abilities and the reincarnation of Ol’ Blue, a 1972 family favorite from Mr. Lehmann’s childhood. The students voted on their favorite Bikes, Carts and BBQs. Congratulations to all the champions! It was a fun and exciting day for everyone.
