PBA Stars Malott,
O’Neill Added to 2009
Team USA Roster
ARLINGTON, Texas—A
pair of the most dominating
players on the Lumber Liquidators PBA Tour - Wes Malott
of Pflugerville, Texas, and Bill
O’Neill of Levittown, Pa., have been added to the 2009
Team USA roster.
Malott and O’Neill join an
elite group of bowlers on Team
USA who will represent the
United States in international
competition throughout the
year. Both were selected because of their solid play so far
this season on the PBA Tour.
“Certainly Wes and Bill
have had very solid performances so far this season,”
Team USA head coach Jeri
Edwards said. “When you
combine that with the fact that
they have bowled well the last
couple years, it was really a
joy to be able to add these two
great players to the team for
2009.”
Malott, 32, currently leads
the PBA’s Player of the Year
points race with 58 points after 12 events. He has made
seven championship round appearances this season, winning
twice, finishing second once,
third three times and fourth
once.
“Now that I’ve been selected, I’m definitely looking forward to it,” said Malott, who
has five PBA titles and over
$600,000 in career earnings.
“I’m very excited to be able to
represent my country. It’s the
chance of a lifetime, and that’s
the way I’m looking at it.”
Although O’Neill, 27, is
still seeking his first PBA title,
he has appeared in the championship round five times this

The Day Belonged
To Damian!
SAN DIEGO — Kearny
Mesa Bowl was the host center last weekend for the NABI
tournament, & long time member Tony Damian won title #3.
Tony became the #7 seed
in the eliminator style finals,
so he was going to face higher
seeds on his path to the victory. He was up to the challenge,
getting stronger as the afternoon’s competition unfolded.
After a shaky start in the
position round, the finals were
a clinic on focus & consistency for him. He seems to thrive
on finals performances, as the
bowler he faced in the final
match, Steve Slezak, lamented
the fact that he was one of
Tony’s opponents the last time
when Tony rolled a perfect 300
against him. This time Steve
finished second, & had also
performed well all afternoon,
but faced a steam roller in
Tony! Congratulations Tony
& Steve, & thanks for a great
display of bowling by both of
you. The other finalists were
Alan Grobmeier, Brian Watkins, Herb Stansberry, Nick
Inganna, Johnny Graham &
Simon Nophalath.
Several perpetual pots were
collected…9 in a row by Herb
Stansberry, striking out in the
10th frame all three games by
Brian Watkins, & the 3-6-9 in
game #2 by Phil Horn, Chad
Hill & Johnny Graham.
Guaranteed $50 sidepots
each qualifying game went
to Cassandra Canon, Nick Inganna, Troy Thompson, Tony
Nunez, Herb Stansberry, Brian
Watkins, Jeff Greer, Chad Hill
& Steve Slezak.
Focus on NABI Week this
July has begun. The dates are
July 17-24 at the Orleans in
Las Vegas. Tony is now eligible to participate in the Tournament of Champions that is
part of the action that week.
Our next tournament is
February 21st at Mira Mesa
Lanes. Check for the details
about the tournament next
week in the Bowling News ad,

Duke Wins Denny’s
Dick Weber Open
by B.A. Campbell
FOUNTAIN VALLEY—
The 2009 PBA Denny’s Dick
Weber Open concluded Sunday at Fountain Bowl, with
44-year-old right-hander Norm
Duke winning $35,000 and his
latest PBA title, defeating Michael Fagan in the final match,
278 to 168. Duke admitted
that having “a week off made
a difference.” Which it certainly did. By the fifth frame,
Duke was 67 pins ahead, firing
off five in a row while Fagan
found two opens in his game.
Fagan marked throughout in
the last half but was unable
to catch up to the venerable
Duke. “Norm found his line,”
Fagan admitted.
Earlier, the finals had some
strong matchups, with the
first match between fifth-seed
right-hander Michael Fagan
(who averaged 219.51 over 39
games) and fourth-seed righty
Chris Barnes (who averaged
223.64 over 39 games) battling for advancement. Barnes,
looking for his 11th PBA title,
left an open frame in the fifth,
and couldn’t come back with
a strike until the ninth frame.
Fagan maintained his lead and
won, 204 to 183.
In the second match, Fagan, from Patchogue, NY, then
went up against the 42-yearold right-hander Ryan Shafer
of Horseheads, NY, (who averaged 222.62 over 39 games).
Shafer, seeking his 5th PBA title, started out with two spares,
while Fagan struck. From the
fourth frame, Fagan strung six
in a row while Shafer bookended four strikes with two
spares, setting up the win for
Fagan, 256 to 223.
In the third match, the
28-year-old Fagan, looking
for his second PBA title, and
right-hander Pete Weber of
St. Ann, MO (who carried the
high average of 228.95 over 39
games) were neck-and-neck
through the fifth frame. The
46-year-old Weber, seeking his
Norm Duke one step closer to 2009 points leader.
35th PBA title, had a washout
in the sixth and was unable to
convert the spare, giving him
his only open of the match. Fagan continued striking through
to the tenth, finishing with a
nine-count open and winning
the match, 243 to 201, setting
up his chance to face Norm
Duke (who averaged 227.21
over 39 games) in the title
match.
The PBA 2009 Denny’s
Dick Weber Open had 158 entries, with 37 non-PBA members among the entrants. Of
all entries, 55 bowlers hailed
from California. Five women
were entered in the tournament: after 15 games of qualifying, 2008 PBA Women’s
Series bowlers Shalin Zulkifli of Malaysia cashed in 41st
place, averaging 208.93; local
fan favorite Missy Bellinder of
Fullerton ended in 65th, averaging 201.67; Adrienne Miller
of Buffalo Grove, Illinois
ended in 99th place, averaging
194.0; collegiate champion
Elysia Current of Ephrata, PA
came in 118th place, averaging 189.13; former pro and
current Del Rosa Lanes owner
Nicole Ellison of Chatsworth,
CA ended in 137th place, averaging 180.0.
Next on the PBA tournament schedule is the USBC
Masters from Las Vegas,
where over 420 bowlers are
competing for a prize fund of
over $392,000 and a first place
prize of $60,000. Live broadcast on ESPN will air Sunday
February 15th at 10 am Pacific

FOUNTAIN VALLEY —The
pros left some great scoring conditions for the Vegas league when
we traveled to Fountain Bowl
on Monday. It was a hectic day,
having to make up the lost game
from November and then bowl our
regularly scheduled 3-game visit,
but it’s done now and standings
reported below are current, pending confirmation by Betty Phillips
when she does the league sheets.
We won’t try to recap scoring
from that session but we will spotlight Doris Lewis, who ended her
November 2-game session with
425 and then fired her third game
of 267 this week for a gigantic 692
series. It’s now season high series,
for 156 and over bowlers.
We were sure pulling for her to
get eight more pins for a 700 series
because In fifty one years of action the Vegas league has never recorded one although we have had
many close attempts. We have had
a 300 game, scored years ago by
Marion Empson at Missile Bowl,
another of the long gone bowling
centers. This season high game is
now held by Roberta McNaught’s
245. Other season highs did not
change.
Before reporting more league
news, our thanks to Fountain Bowl
super employee, Fred, who proved
he can be ten places at one time.
Seriously, he helped in so many
ways from opening the doors early, to running from lane to lane to
provide needed assistance.
Monday’s scoring honors went
to Wanda Worrall, 201-579, Doris Lewis, 203-563, Dee Phipps
203-560, Myrt Owens 213-546,
Margo McClain 536, Teri Hefner
528, Cil Moons 216-523, Kathy
Parrish 202-523, Karen Mauricio
508, Hedy Schoner 507 and Joan
Roper 502. Jarra Gallina continues
her split conversions with 4-7-10
being best of four this week.
Keystone Lanes #2 took over
league leadership Monday with
52.2 wins, former leaders Doris’
Hair Designs moves to second
spot with 51 followed by David
McNaught CPA, 47.2; Cerritos
#2 and Westminster #1 tie at 47;
Westminster #2, 44; Cal Bowleros,
43.2; Keystone #1, 42 and the rest
of the league trails from 38 down
to cellar team with 21.2.
Two sidelined bowlers returned to the league this week, Jan
Jones and Berneice King. Berncice is still not able to return to
league sessions but Jan Jones tried
her ability to resume and complete
the season, however, it depends
on how she fared after Monday.
She was in some pain. Also, Pris
Mauricio is sidelined with a painful right arm injury for a few more
weeks.
NEXT WEEK: 10 a.m. Monday, February 16 at Keystone
Lanes.

What Works?
Ask the Camellia
City 500 Club
by Mary Lynly
SACRAMENTO—We all remember the pride in being a part
of our bowling organizations when membership was of primary
importance and although this has ebbed, some groups have leadership that still makes membership important.
Like many bowling affiliated clubs, the Sacramento area Camellia City 500 Club, formed in 1969, has run the gamut of being
a formidable organization, then foundering, and then existing.
What happens? And, what happened to change that?
In 2006 Shirley Baker became President of the club. She had
been a member 20 years and 13 as a Vice President prior to taking over at the helm. Shirley had started working for the State
of California as a clerk-typist and ended up with a demanding
job of auditing the state prisons and eventually in upper management. She feels she was in the right place at the right time and
was fortunate in being able to take advantage of women’s rights
in advancing her career. After 38 ½ years she retired.
Baker says she is a business oriented and analytical person
and likes people to be prepared in their assignments and if they
have issues – bring solutions. With her organizational skills and
encouraging people to be a part of the club they now number 160
members and she says her biggest concern is growth! They have
eleven events each year: two Invitational’s – one in Reno that
draws over 500 bowlers, and one that invites other 500 Clubs.
There are three Doubles tournaments that allow guests and six
that are member tournaments. Some of these tournaments are
sanctioned events and some are just fun events like a No-Tap
format. Bowlers must have bowled in five events per year to
qualify for their Queen’s tournament and two events to maintain
membership.
There are two board meetings each year and one annual
meeting in November prior to their Turkey Shoot which she says
draws a good group to their meeting. Baker says because of a
30% increase in membership in the last three years they have
added two additional directors to their board of eight directors
and five officers.
As a guest at one of their tournaments and it was awesome
to look down the lanes and see all of their members in their required club black shirts and white pants! Shirley tells me this is
the summer uniform and black on black is winter. She also said
in the past the club had not been consistent in enforcing certain
rules one of which involved uniforms. A new ruling now states,
“If you come to bowl and are not in the required uniform you do
not bowl.”
I also attended their annual awards and recognition banquet
attended by nearly 200 people. Preparation is everything and
everything ran like clockwork. At this event every club member
is given a ticket upon arrival and each wins a nice prize. Prizes
are donated by numerous sponsors.
BOWLING NEWS
Their committees consist of Audit, Charity, Communication,
Invitational Tournaments, Banquet and Refreshments. Their purpose: “To provide for social and charitable activities, competitive
events and other activities related to bowling.” The women of the
Camellia City 500 Club have raised and distributed $2700 for
charitable endeavors in 2008 including food baskets for families
in need, Youth Bowlers programs, The WIBC Hall of Fame and
the California BVL Fund.
Shirley is assisted by her able Secretary Marilyn Aki who
handles the secretarial and treasurer’s duties with great skill.
Marilyn is still computer shy but she is working on it says Shirley! Shirley says they have a website in the works and they are
always looking for ways to cut down on postage. She envisions
coping with growth by trying multiple squads as they do not want
to go beyond four on a lane. Negotiating with the bowling centers is sometimes iffy but they must have a contractual commitment to ensure their spot. Besides their communication team and
emailing to the 90% who have email, they accommodate their
members with an annual calendar. She proudly announced they
will have their 18th Annual tournament in April and the 11th Annual Reno tournament in September.
For all of us who have “been there” making an organization
“work” is work. Leadership is what makes an organization tick participation as bowlers and as leaders. A leader who is able to
guide her flock while allowing them to make the decisions that
affect the entire group. Shirley is a premier mover and shaker
and has used her expertise to inject enthusiasm and appeal for
aspiring members. Shirley Baker doesn’t stop at Camellia City
500 Club activities and while she pilots her organization seamlessly from one event to another she still finds time to be active
in the Grange and as a square dancer. Her vision for the Camellia
City 500 Club: Growth and enticing younger women to become
members.

season, taking second place twice. He also has seven top 10 finishes this season.
“I didn’t realize they were actually going to add players to the
team, so to get that call was very surprising and a huge honor,”
said O’Neill, a three-time collegiate bowler of the year at Saginaw Valley State. “The group of guys that they have selected to
be on Team USA is just incredible and for them to select me to be
a part of that group feels pretty special.”
The additions of Malott and O’Neill were made by a committee comprised of representatives from the United States Bowling
Congress and the Professional Bowlers Association. The same
committee was responsible for selecting five male and five female players to join Team USA in October.
“When the selection committee made those picks, they did so
with the understanding that if other players excelled during the
first half of the PBA Tour or PBA Women’s Series season, they
would be able to make additional selections,” said David Garber,
High Performance Director for USBC. “Wes and Bill have without a doubt proven they belong on Team USA.”
Malott and O’Neill’s selections bring the total number of men
on the Team USA 2009 roster to 12. They join fellow exempt
players Walter Ray Williams Jr., Tommy Jones, Chris Barnes,
Rhino Page, Patrick Allen and Nathan Bohr along with amateurs
Cassidy Schaub, David Haynes, John Szczerbinski and Tim Pfeifer.
Six of the 12 players on the men’s team will travel to San
Juan, Puerto Rico, this September to compete in the 2009 Pan
American Bowling Confederation Championships. Six Team
USA women will also compete in the event.

USBC Board to Start Executive Search
ARLINGTON,
Texas—
The Board of Directors of
the United States Bowling
Congress has decided to commence with a search for a permanent Executive Director for
the organization.
“The Board greatly appreciates the leadership shown by
Chief Operating Officer Kevin
Dornberger,” said USBC President Jeff Boje.
“In accordance with the
process prescribed when Kevin first took the position as interim COO, we have decided
to commence with a search
for a permanent Executive Director for USBC at this time.
Kevin will receive full consideration for this position should
he choose to be acandidate.”
The Bowling Proprietors’
Association of America Board
of Directors has also announced that it will begin a
search for an Executive Director to replace John Berglund,
who has previously announced
his pending retirement.

This newly created position
would report to a joint committee comprised of USBC

This decision came after a
task force from BPAA and the
USBC studied the structure of

The USBC and BPAA

“Many teams within USBC

unification of those teams,”
Boje said. “The Board believes
that this operating model gives
USBC and the sport of bowling the best chance to succeed

Although no formal timetable has been set, a professional

NATIONAL DEAF BOWLING NEWS
DEAF PRO FRANK GALLO NOT DOING WELL IN
DENNY’S DICK WEBER OPEN
FOUNTAIN VALLEY...The deaf PBA member Frank Gallo,
Jr. flew down from his home in North Carolina to participate
in Lumber Liquidators PBA Tour Denny’s Dick Weber Open.
A group of deaf fans including former PBA member and 1986
ABC Star of Tomorrow Mark Fisser and newest PBA member
Jim Theyken followed Gallo, Jr. on his Wednesday two rounds
which he did not do very well.
On Thursday Ed Abakumoff and Robert Ellison were there to
watch Gallo Jr. finish in 93rd place out of nearly 160 entrants. At
lunchtime Abakumoff and Gallo, Jr. sat with and conversed with
the legendary bowling coach John Jowdy who knew the other
deaf pro Pete Kaczmarczyk of Detroit.
On Friday evening Abakumoff and Ellison were there watching Norm Duke taking over top seed from Pete Weber. Abakumoff said Ellison was wearing a jacket with Australia logo on it,
which caught the eye of the international two handed star bowler
from Australia Jason Belmonte who participated and cashed in
this tournament. Belmonte thought Ellison was from his country
but Ellison told him that he bought it while he was bowling for
Deaf Team USA in the Deaflympics at Melbourne in 2005.
Belmonte asked Ellison if he knew the deaf Australian bowler
David Howard. Ellison replied yes and that Howard bowled the
first ever 300 game in the 2001 Deaflympics in Italy. To which
Belmonte said Howard bowls in his league at Melbourne. That
is interesting.
Gallo, Jr. stayed at my home on Thursday and Friday and left
for Las Vegas Saturday morning for the USBC Masters which is
being held on brand new lanes installed at Cashman Convention
Center in Las Vegas from Tuesday to Sunday. After Sunday the
60 lanes will be for the USBC Team, Doubles and Singles Championship tournament that runs from February to July with more
than 17,200 teams. Mark Fisser who had participated in many
ABC/USBC Masters will also bowl in the Masters.
While Gallo, Jr. was my guest, we visited and watched Ken
DeGroff bowl in the Mission Majors at Mission Hills Bowl.
Gallo, Jr was surprised to see several bowlers who bowled in
the Weber Open also bowl in this league. DeGroff’s first place
team was against the USBC Hall of Famer Robin Romeo’s team.
DeGroff shot 750 (255-229-266) and Robin was best on her team
with 705 in this tough league, which has a $12,000 300 pool and
$6,000 800 pool. Any bowler in this league who bowls a 300 or
a 800 shares in these pools with his or her team. So far there are
10 300s and six 800 bowled already.
No wonder, Gallo, Jr was itching to try the Mission Hills
lanes and asked DeGroff for a friendly match game challenge
on Friday morning. DeGroff accepted and they bowled 6 games
with DeGroff winning 4 games to Gallo, Jr’s two, averaging in
all duce’s 230 plus to Gallo, Jr’s 217. Gallo, Jr. had the high
game 268 and DeGroff’s was 244.
FLASH NEWS, BARRETT LEE SHOT 822 IN RED
ROCK LEAGUE
LAS VEGAS—I got this from Carl Malucci saying that Barrett Lee was taking over the center stage in the Wednesday night
Mountain Siders League at Red Rock Lanes for this time as Malucci himself rolled just a 719. Lee was at his best time, rolled
games of 288-244-290 for his career first 800, a 822.
Lee who last year rolled his first career 300, had a previous
high of 790. In his 288, Lee had 10 straight strikes and lost a 300
and he had one open in his 244. He spared in first frame of his
290 and punched out 11 in row. Too bad his wife, Melchora had
her worst night with a 492, Joey Harris a 625 and Malucci himself a 719, their Team Nation hit games of 906-859-893 for 2658
for the night. Congratulations goes to Barrett Lee for his honor
score of 822 and 11 in row 290.
SN-CDBA DREWS 26 TEAMS AND 71 FOR DEAF
ELIMINATIONS AT SUNSET STATION
HENDERSON...So. Nev-Calif. Deaf Bowling Association
drew 26 teams, 51 doubles, 102 singles and 71 for the prestigious
Deaf Eliminations for its 25th anniversary tournament at Sunset
Station Lanes in Henderson near Las Vegas this weekend. All
eyes will be on Carl Malucci’s Team Nation who is racking up
high scores but this is a handicap tournament and some teams are
carrying hefty handicaps.
Stan Booth the secretary treasurer says there will be the bowlers meeting on Friday night and the tournament starts with doubles and singles on Saturday morning and the Deaf Eliminations
qualifying round in the afternoon. The team event commences
on Sunday morning with the Eliminations mach plays in the afternoon. All awards will be given out at the end of the Eliminations and also the 25th anniversary cake will be eaten after the
awards.

SLAC Youth Travel
by Otha Stubblefield
DOWNEY—I love coming to Del Rio. The pizza is great,
and so are the scores. Well, the pizza is certainly great, but we
did have a few good scores.
Jeremy Glover jumped back on the 900 train with a 960 from
games of 240, 245, 266 and 209. Keyon couldn’t make it this
week, but sent alumni bowler Will Jackson to fill in for him.
After some grunting and wheezing, Will managed a respectable
781 with a 214 high game! They’ll be talking about that at the
barbershop for years to come!
Those scores combine for this week’s team high series of
1741 and 454 high game.
Team 1 (Justin/Teddie), however, takes the weekly team high
game honor with a 422. Back to the individual scores, the powerhouse John Mc Cullin took second at 857, breaking pins with
225, 223 and 244 games.
Brent Shern overcame a headachy 160 to shoot 217, 231 and
210 for 818. Justin Gadaire just misses 800 with 212, 197, 203
and 187 for 799. Coming in fifth is Brandon Pekins who couldn’t
get over 200 (twice) for 772.
The other members of the 200 club were Teddie Carter at 219
and Austin Gadaire at 205. This week’s shoutout goes to everyone who made the cut at JAT Farm Club and JAT – Jeremy,
Brent, John, Josh (Chick-Fil-A gave you a day off?), Brandon,
Lawrence (1st-time), Justin, Steven and I won’t forget James.
To those that didn’t make the cut, just remember that there are
other tournaments. Everyone who comes to bowl wants to win,
but only one of you can.
If you don’t make it this time, try again the next time; but
make sure you don’t do anything that will prevent you from
HAVING a next time. Speaking of next time, we’ll be at El Dorado where the crashing of pins will drown out the takeoffs and
landings of nearby airplanes. See you on Saturday.

UNITED STATES BOWLING CONGRESS
BREAKS GROUND ON INTERNATIONAL
TRAINING AND RESEARCH CENTER
ARLINGTON, Texas - Staff members at the new International Bowling Campus were on hand Thursday for the groundbreaking of the International Training and Research Center.
United States Bowling Congress Chief Executive Officer
Kevin Dornberger, USBC Vice President-National Governing
Body Neil Stremmel and Bowling Proprietors’ Association of
America Executive Director John Berglund briefly addressed the
group before various people donned hard hats and used shovels
to ceremoniously move dirt in the complex’s south parking lot.
“This facility has been a long time in the making,” Dornberger said. “It will be the facility to teach, the facility to train and
the facility to coach. We will make this the learning place of the
world.”
“There are more than 30 National Governing Body training
centers in the United States so, this is a positive step to the future
success for bowling,” Stremmel said. “The ability to perform
testing, conduct research and administer high-quality coaching is
a key component to be a national governing body.”
Others on hand included USBC High Performance Director
for Team USA, the USBC Coaching program and the International Training and Research Center David Garber and International Training and Research Center Head Coach Rod Ross.
“I am elated that USBC, along with BPAA, has the foresight
to build a state-of-the-art training and test center,” Garber said.
“This is another huge step in being able to grow the sport of
bowling and continue to increase credibility to USBC and the
coaching department.”
“This is a very exciting time for the sport of bowling. Having
a facility like this is needed if we want to grow and develop the
sport,”
Ross said. “The tools and techniques that we have and continue to develop will not only help the elite athletes and teams
that will train here, but the programs we develop will also help
bowling centers improve their bowler retention and bowler developmental programs.”
The facility will include 14 lanes for training and six for research and testing of bowling equipment with four of the lanes
being equipped for televised broadcasts. High-tech tools in the
test center’s research area will include a robotic ball thrower,
computer ball tracking system and state-of-the-art biomechanics technology such as motion capture, which uses a sensor array and computer system to precisely track body movements of
bowlers. “
Plans call for coaches to use that technology on the test center lanes to coach Team USA, Junior Team USA, national teams
from World Tenpin Bowling Association countries and possibly
coaches who want to train in the facility. In addition, the plan is
for the training center to be available for a fee to bowlers who
want to take high-tech coaching lessons.
“This if the fulfillment of a dream,” Berglund said. “But it’s
not the end of a dream. It’s the beginning and BPAA is happy to
play a role in making it happen.”
Full-time construction on the 20-lane facility will begin next
week with a goal to be finished by Sept. 1.
“USBC is the world leader with regards to equipment specifications and rules; now coaching will have an appropriate place
to become world class,” Stremmel said.

SAN BERNARDINO — Wow! You’ve probably seen or
heard about the great “Snow Wonderland” here in the San
Bernardino mountains. The recent storms gave us a great
snowfall and the mountains are covered with all that wonderful stuff called snow. It came at a perfect time with the 4-day
week-end coming up when people can head up to ski and
play in the snow. So while you’re in the area, come on over
to Del Rosa Lanes (we’re located in the foothills of the San
Bernardino mountains) where it’s nice and warm indoors and
have fun bowling. It’s wonderful that you can ski and bowl all
in the same day or spread it out over the weekend.
