Pews were filled Thursday night at the
First Baptist Church in Paradise.
But the congregation wasn’t there for a
summer revival.
The church was the gathering spot for
landowners who may be affected by the
Willow Creek-Hicks 345 kilovolt Transmission Line, which is expected to cross the
width of southern Wise County. The route
runs from the proposed Hicks switching
station near Hicks Airfield Road in Tarrant County to the Willow Creek switch-

I WANT THIS ONE, DADDY — Fireworks are a staple of the Fourth of July. Fireworks stands pop up just outside of towns, decorated with festive lights and
offering everything from $1 sparklers to $200 artillery shell packages. Here, Cameryn Estel, son of Vince Estel, Boyd fire chief and police officer, looks
at bags of fireworks at a stand near Boyd Thursday. Estel said that recent rains will decrease the chance of fires, but encouraged those using fireworks to
“read warning labels and keep them away from structures.” Wise County Fire Marshal Marc Dodd said that the main dangers with fireworks are injury and
fire. Dodd asked that parents closely supervise children using fireworks. He also suggested using fireworks in an area that has been recently mowed and to
use common sense. See page 2A for Fourth of July activities.

district budget
By MANDY BOURGEOIS
The Northwest school board approved a
$154,370,403 budget for the 2010-2011 school year
at Tuesday’s meeting. The budget is based on a proposed $1.375 tax rate, up 2 cents from the current
rate.
“I’d like to publicly acknowledge the board,” Superintendent Karen Rue said. “You challenge us every
year to bring to you a balanced budget. We’re doing
that this year.”
Trustee Davis Palmer praised the work of district
CFO Jon Graswich, and said that next year’s budget

SUMMER RAIN — With storms late in June bringing rain to Wise County, rainfall totals for the month were just slightly below normal. According to weather
watcher Doyle Green, Decatur received 4.22 inches of rain for the month. The average for June is 4.33 inches. Despite being below average for the month,
June marked the second-wettest month of the year so far behind the 6.03 inches Wise County received in March. For the year, Wise County has received
22.33, a little more than an inch above the normal 21.13 inches through June.
Students returning to Carson
Elementary School in Decatur this
fall will have a new principal, but
he’ll be a familiar face.
At the June 24 school board
meeting, Kyle Sorg was approved
as principal of the campus. Sorg
has been an assistant principal at
the school for two years.
Sorg is replacing Kim Barker,
who is leaving the district.
In other elementary news, the
district has now taken possession
of Young Elementary and the new
transportation facility located on

tur. Representatives from
Charter Construction and
Claycomb Associates architects were at the meeting, and they reported that
the project was $1.5-1.6
million under budget.
Board president Alan
White praised the work.
“This is my fourth building project with the district, and this was the
smoothest, best-run project,” he said. “Never in my wildest dreams would have thought it
would be this smooth. Thank you.”
Interim Superintendent Gary
Micinski said the district is work-
ing with the builders to
address a concern about
a drainage issue with a
neighboring property owner. Micinski said that if
fixing the issue costs more
than $25,000 or includes
altering the neighbor’s
property, the issue would
be brought to the board
for its approval.
SORG
Pam Holland, executive
director of instructional
services, gave a report on preliminary results of the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills
test. She said that she expects the
district to be recognized. Rann
Elementary should be exemplary
and Carson Elementary, the intermediate, middle and high schools
should be recognized. Holland said
the district should receive notification of ratings at the end of July.
In other business, the board:
! approved the purchase of playground equipment for Young Elementary at a cost not to exceed
$67,930.
! honored Decatur Middle School
teacher Cathy Talley as educator
of the month.
! honored Decatur ISD network
administrator Roger Egle as support staff employee of the month.

WISE COUNTY MESSENGER, Decatur, Texas, Sunday, July 4, 2010
OPINION
OUR VIEWS
Welcome to Wise County, newcomers
By BRIAN KNOX
It sounds like Rod Townsend
is well loved in Hico, the town
he’s called home for more than a
decade. Townsend was selected as
the lone finalist for the Decatur
school district’s superintendent
June 24.
The next day, I called the Hico
News Review newspaper to see
if they could send us a photo
and possibly some information
on Townsend. I spoke with publisher Jerry McAdams who knows
Townsend quite well – McAdams
serves on the Hico School Board.
“He’s a really good guy, very capable,” McAdams said. “He knows
budgets and state regulations, but
he’ll also get out there and dig a
ditch when he needs to.”
I read a column by McAdams
about Townsend’s participation in
the successful Texas Steak Cookoff held in Hico each year that
also may give a clue to the type of
leader Townsend could be.
“One thing you learn from being
around Townsend is he likes to
get things done. If he tells you a
rooster can carry a bale of hay,
you better find a place to put it,”
McAdams wrote.
McAdams said
Townsend has been
instrumental in organizing the event “from
behind the scenes” over
the years, and he was
impressed that Townsend
could get 75 Hico ISD
employees to volunteer
their time for a full day
of physical work making
the cookoff a reality – all
the time with smiles on
their faces.
McAdams said it is all about
loyalty.
“Townsend has a favorite saying
about ‘ride for the brand’ which
refers to being loyal to the outfit you work for. That loyalty he
fosters in the school is why people
there are willing to help when he
asks,” McAdams wrote.
Assuming everything gets finalized between Townsend and the
Decatur School Board later this
month, he will soon have a chance
to start building that loyalty at
Decatur ISD.
New to Wise
Speaking of newcomers, I’ve
been following a blog written by Amanda Hopper
about her family’s progress of building a house
in the countryside outside
of Decatur after years of
“city life” in Denton. The
very well-written and
often humorous entries
not only give updates on
the progress of their home
building project, but also
KNOX
how they are getting used
to their new surroundings,
including wildlife. She’s included
a running list of “Wildlife Encounters to Date,” which includes
a rat snake, runaway longhorns,
a rattlesnake, bobcat, armadillo,
loads of toads, rabbits, herds of
deer and fireflies. She’s even got a
couple of recipes to share.
To follow the Hopper family’s
transformation into Wise Countians, go to http://txfunnyfarm.
blogspot.com.
First Welcome
Our staff has been hard at work
over the past few weeks putting
together our annual visitors and
newcomer’s guide, Welcome to
Wise. We think it is our best WTW
to date. You should be receiving it
in your mailbox around July 21.
As we put our finishing touches
on this year’s section, I’m reminded of the first Welcome to Wise I
saw. The 2000 Welcome to Wise
had just been published when I
interviewed with former editor
Skip Nichols for a reporter’s job
at the Mess, having just finished
college.
The guide was a handy tool for
introducing me to the county and
was part of the reason why I chose
Decatur as the place to begin
my journalism career and Wise
County as my home. I always try
to keep that in mind each year as
we put together a product aimed
at giving our newcomers a wellrounded overview of Wise County.
Tomorrow (July 5) marks the
10th anniversary of my first
day on the job at the Mess. I no
longer feel like a “newcomer,”
except when I’m talking to people
whose families have been here for
generations. I hope the readers
of Welcome to Wise, particularly
those new to the area, will come
to see what I’ve discovered: Wise
County is a great place to live.
Hurricane duty
I e-mailed a question to our
state representative, Phil King,
Wednesday, and he promptly
responded that he would have
his chief of staff, Caleb Troxclair,
check into it. King, a member of
the Texas State Guard, had been
activated to help South Texas
prepare for Hurricane Alex. King
serves as a Lieutenant Colonel
in the Texas State Guard, one of
three branches of the Military
forces of the State of Texas.
The Texas State Guard assists state and local authorities
in times of emergencies. About
750 Texas State Guard troops
were stationed in Edinburg to
help manage up to 22 shelters,
distribute food and maintain
order, according to news reports
from television station KVEO in
Brownsville. The Category 2 hurricane made landfall in northern
Mexico early Thursday morning.

We would like to thank the Decatur Public
Library for bringing the fun, creative and entertaining “Summer Reading Program,” to Carson
Elementary summer school. The kids enjoyed the
presentations, and the program helped spark new,
creative ideas for reading this summer. We greatly
appreciate the library directors who took the time
to come to our school for our students.
Thank you greatly.

Neal’s
allegations deceitful
Week after week, I read letters written by Bonnie J. Neal that appear in the “Opinion” column of
the Wise County Messenger. They express her own
personal opinions, which are completely opposite
from the majority of the citizens of Newark who
overwhelmingly voted to change the direction of
the city and who are very pleased with the dedication and hard work of our mayor and current
council members.
Of late, Ms. Neal has made some very serious
accusations against our elected city officials. Her
statements have gone way beyond the scope of
opinion and have fallen into the category of deceitful lies.
In her last letter, Ms. Neal stated that records
were being kept out of citizens’ hands indicating
something is questionable. Ms. Neal knows full
well that the public can access city records at any
time through the Freedom of Information Act. She
herself has requested such information, which the
city has agreed to provide.
Further, she states that “the present administration replaced the well-being of children and
families with alcohol” which is simply not true.
The good citizens of Newark were allowed to vote
whether they wanted the sale of beer and wine
within city limits, and they overwhelmingly voted
“yes.” This decision was made by the people, not
the city council.
Ms. Neal goes on to suggest that deals are being
set up behind closed doors. This statement is not
only irresponsible, but is also an outrageous lie.
Newark city council members do not make “deals,”
nor do they meet in private to discuss city business. Doing so is a serious crime that is punishable
by fine and imprisonment. Accusing city council
members of breaking the law is not taken lightly.
As a citizen of Newark, I do not appreciate Ms.
Neal’s unwarranted allegations and evil attempt to
cast doubt on the honesty and integrity of the very
citizens who are working the hardest to make our
city better.

Happy Fourth of July
By MARTHA RANDOLPH CARR
Take a moment this Sunday on the Fourth of July as
we’re gathered around picnic tables, pool sides, at the
beach or in a town square or city park to say a
little something about what you’re grateful for
about America.
Put down the hotdog and the sparkler and really give it a little thought.
We have all come through so much together in
recent years, and it hasn’t given us much time to
reflect about anything. If you were laid off from a
job, it’s probably even been a little harder to come
up with much to feel good about, but it’s there and
it’s worth remembering.
Let’s start with the idea that we are grateful
enough to live in a country where second chances
happen all the time. Neighbors get in arguments over
garbage cans or we get caught speeding on the highway
and there’s a reasonable consequence followed by another
chance. That may seem like a small moment but in so
many other countries the smaller details of life have to be
watched carefully so that out-sized punishments aren’t
meted out.
In America we even celebrate the politicians who have
opinions that we can’t stand. We support the
groups that are working for a cause that we don’t
think is right, and we defend the faiths we don’t
even understand. Imagine how much grace it took
at our founding to want to hold up as ideal the
idea that we don’t know everything and are willing to be wrong.
That’s why great things are always being discovered by Americans whether they were born here
or just recently emigrated. It’s because we can let
our thoughts wander without fear of retribution,
CARR and sometimes those thoughts lead to the light
bulb moments of new cures or inventions.
We don’t restrain the opinions of others even if they
make our blood boil, and even better, we often listen and

Dollars wasted
at dealership
I took my pickup to a local dealership to have the carrier
bearing replaced on the drive shaft. I had already found
two replacement bearings from a local auto parts store for
my truck. One was $17, and the other was $24. I put in the
$17 part, and my truck still had problems so I put in the
$24 part. What I didn’t know was that it wasn’t the wrong
bearing; it just needed to be clocked.
Since I thought I still had the wrong bearing, I went to
the dealership to get the price on one from them. They
quoted $124, plus tax. Being naive, I left my truck with the
service department just to have the bearing replaced.
When I got the bill, I was shocked. The invoice showed
that they replaced two U-joints for $110.94, times 2
($221.88), and the bearing for $171. When I went to the
parts department and asked what a U-joint would cost,
they quoted $84. That is an increase of 32 percent for the
U-joint and 38 percent on the bearing. Then add labor, and
the total bill was $707.75.
I never asked to have the U-joint replaced, and the service representative never contacted me to inform me that
they were going to replace it. They also clocked the drive
train, which is why the bearing that I put in did not work.
The U-joint and the clocking were never mentioned until I
got my bill.
We as consumers, myself included, need to ask more
questions before we hand over our vehicles for repair at
a dealership. Do you remember Doug Skinner? He was a
mechanic. Look at your next invoice from a dealership. It

then debate them back. Pushing at
our intellectual boundaries has often
led us to make great changes like
making sure every single citizen,
regardless of race, gets the chance to
vote.
Or, even after 9/11 when we were
all so frightened we took a breath
and stood up for our neighbors who
worshipped at mosques and we tried
to listen rather than react.
Our ability to respond like that in
moments of such great national grief
is the legacy handed down to us by all
of those great men and women who
helped found this country based on a
hope they had of a free society that
might be fulfilled in the generations
to come after them.
Whenever we choose to hear some-
one out with the idea that we might
learn something, we fulfill the promise in a way that so few other countries have ever been able to match.
And in the space where differing ideas
meet is the potential for greatness.
That’s who we are as a country and
it’s what others often miss when they
look at us in anger and can’t understand why we don’t restrain ourselves
more often.
In America we may often stumble
but we have this gift given to us by
our forefathers that says we can
always try again tomorrow because
at our core we believe that humanity
is basically good. We keep that ideal
alive by listening and even more powerfully by arguing and then shaking
hands later.

ALVORD
Council
approves EDC
appointments
By MANDY BOURGEOIS
The Alvord City Council
approved Mayor Terri Freeman’s appointments to the
Economic Development Corporation Board at the June
24 meeting.
Debra McKelvain, Callie
Manning, Charlotte Fitzgerald, Tracy McKinney, Michelle Hardee and Paula
Talley were chosen to serve
terms on the board.
Freeman was absent from
the meeting.
Freeman previously asked
city attorney Jim Shepherd
to review the city’s Economic Development Corporation
bylaws. Shepherd said that
the bylaws were probably
taken from another, larger
city, and he will offer suggestions on revisions at the
next meeting.
In other business, members of the council questioned a $1,000 monthly
payment to Countrywide
Inspection, which provides
building inspection services
to the city. Mayor pro tem
Karan Huggins said that
the city pays the $1,000 flat
rate in advance of services.
Council members Chris
Caster and Jim Enochs complained that the bill, which
did not indicate what services were to be conducted,
needed to be itemized. Huggins said that she called the
company about a previous
month’s services and asked
for a report but has not received one. The company
was also on the June 10
meeting agenda, but a representative did not come.
“If he can’t take the time
to come up here and tell us
what he’s done or give us a
detailed description of what
he’s done, then he doesn’t
want to get paid very badly,”
Caster said. “If he’s coming
to do the job, then that’s fine.
But show me something. I’m
not saying he’s not out there
working, but I’d like to know
what he’s doing.”
Council member Mark
Gose asked that a report
from the company be put
on the agenda for the next
regular meeting.

County cancels
contract with inmate
housing company
By KRISTEN TRIBE
Commissioners agreed to
cancel a contract with CiviGenics for housing out-ofcounty inmates at the June
14 meeting.
Sheriff David Walker recommended the action.
The jail hasn’t housed any
inmates through this contract in a while, and he said
CiviGenics doesn’t pay its
bills on time.
Another company is sending the county a contract
for the same services, and
Walker said he will bring it
to commissioners’ attorney
Thomas Aaberg for review.
“We have space, and I
wouldn’t mind making the
money ... if they’ll pay their
bills,” Walker said.
The sheriff also asked if
he could seek requests for
qualifications for jail dental
work, which commissioners
approved.
Currently, deputies take
inmates to an outside dentist as necessary, but Walker
said he wants to contract
with a company that would
do dental work at the jail.
“It would save us a lot
more on transportation, and
it would keep inmates out of
the public,” he said.
He added that he would
have to purchase a sterilizer
and a dental chair, but a local dentist may be willing to
donate an old chair.

Understanding
What We Read
“Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and
it shall be opened unto you” (Matt 7:7). Ask, seek, and knock are
all action verbs requiring effort on our part. Take the word, “ask”. Doesn’t it make sense
we need to know who we are asking? “And this is life eternal, that they might know thee
the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent” (John 17:3). Remember from
our previous lesson, Jesus said the way to eternal life is strait (or narrow), meaning
too tight for falsehood or anything contrary to what the Bible commands. So it should
behoove us to know who God and Jesus are. Jesus said: “…for my Father is greater than
I” (John 14:28). A lot of confusion arises from when Jesus was talking in parables to the
unbelievers in his day when he said “I and my Father are one” (John 10:33). And thru
their misunderstanding, they were ready to stone him. They thought he meant he was
equal with God even though they knew he was a man (human being). If we keep reading,
we find that what he meant is: “…the Father is in me…” or God gave him the power to
perform the miracles he performed. When we ask, according to the Bible, this is the order
set up for us: “For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man
(human being) Christ Jesus” (I Tim 2:5). Jesus is our mediator, or go between, in order
to reach God with our request. The word, “seek,” means to endeavor to find something.
Jesus set in order what we should seek: “But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and
his righteousness…” (Matt 6:33). Life eternal is to know who God and his son, Jesus,
are. Then we must follow the Bible in order to seek the future kingdom and follow the
right way. For: “Because strait (narrow--no room for false ways) is the gate, and narrow
(confined to the truth) is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find
(takes effort) it.” (Matt 7:14).Remember all it took for Adam and Eve to get kicked out of
Paradise was one piece of forbidden fruit. What is OUR forbidden fruit? It is any untruth
that is contrary to the Bible.

Board approves
district budget ...

to decrease funding of public
schools in order to balance
the state’s budget.
“I appreciate you (Graswich) and your staff for being able to manage the budget process,” Palmer said.
“Unfortunately, I think this
is the last of a relatively easy
time.”
The proposed maintenance
and operations rate will be
$1.04 (the current rate is
$1.02) and the interest and
sinking rate is $.335.
The board will approve the
tax rate at an August meeting.
Last year’s budget was
$140,202,809.
Payroll for 2010-2011 is
budgeted to increase by
$9,700,838.
The board also approved
the acquisition of four properties through purchase or
condemnation in Chadwick
Farms for the construction of
the district’s 16th elementary school. The district chose
a site which includes the four
parcels of land for the new
school and because the district needs to begin construction soon in order to open the
school in August 2011, staff
requested the resolution to
make condemnation an option.
“We have been in negotiations to purchase a very favorable site to build elementary No. 16,” Rue said. “This
is ideally suited. Some of the
other sites were unfavorable
and would require extensive
road work.”
A corporation owns the
land and the purchase or
condemnation of the land
will not affect surrounding
homeowners. There has not
been construction on the
land.
Rue stressed that condemnation would be the last
move by the district, and
staff will continue to negotiate with the landowner.
Rocky Gardiner, vice president and manager of research
at Templeton Demographics,
presented a demographic report on the first quarter of
2010, and gave a forecast of
the upcoming year. Gardiner
said that Northwest is in recovery, as is most of North
Texas. Even with a decrease
in its growth rate, Northwest was third in the region
in growth and eighth in the
state.
Although the district has
seen the lowest home closing
rate in five years, Gardiner
believes that developers are
building inventory. There are
317 homes under construction, which is an increase
over last year.
Gardiner also said that
the district’s growth rate of
8 percent is due not only to
new people coming into the
district, but also to children
living in the district entering
kindergarten.
“The district is still very
young,” Gardiner said, saying
that the district forecasts one
child per home, compared to
.6 children per home in other
areas. “A lot of your growth
comes from existing homes.”
The district is projected to
have more than 20,000 students in 2014, with a fiveyear enrollment growth of
6,441.

Whitehead.
He said the goal of the
sheriff ’s department is to
“apprehend criminals and
suppress criminality, and
you can’t do that by yourself.”
Whitehead said the sheriff ’s department has an open
door policy in Wise County,
meaning they welcome other agencies and are willing
to assist in those investigations, if needed.
He said that is not often
the case, and some departments are more territorial.
“It’s like dogs in the yard
going around and urinating on every tree,” he said.
“They mark their territory
and then throw a fit (when
anyone else comes in).
“But that benefits the
criminals and not law enforcement or the citizens.”
Whitehead
explained
that by building cooperative partnerships with other
agencies, it makes the department more effective.
“If you help someone,
they’re more likely to help
you,” he said.
Sheriff Walker said Whitehead has contacts all over
the country, and people call
for his help because they respect him.
“He’s a wealth of knowledge and my right hand,” he
said. “He pushes for teamwork. Doug does so much for
the county and doesn’t get
the recognition sometimes.
… we really appreciate him
and what he does for us.”
County commissioners formally recognized Whitehead
at last week’s meeting.
Martinez was arrested in
Gainesville at the home of a
relative. Homeland Security
and the Gainesville police
department made the arrest.
Whitehead said information leading to the arrest
was developed by Sgt. Mike
Picha with the Decatur Police Department.
Martinez was transported
to Eagle Pass for grand jury
indictment.

City to build elevated water tank
By MANDY BOURGEOIS
The city of Chico plans to begin construction of a new, elevated water tank
by the end of the year. The new tank
will replace the three elevated tanks
currently in use.
The city council approved a new tank
at the June 10 meeting.
The city recently received a $350,000
grant from the Texas Department of
Rural Affairs that will go toward the
estimated $600,000 bill for the new
tank. The city will use time warrants
to cover its portion of the cost.
The move comes after a water feasibility study that pointed out several issues with the city’s two water systems
— Chico East and Chico West.
Chico East is served by two elevated
tanks on Mount Street, which combine to hold 85,000 gallons. One of the
tanks is approaching 100 years old,
while the other was constructed in the
1950s. A 200,000-gallon tank near the
high school, constructed in the 1980s,
serves Chico West.
The two smaller tanks serve a larger
portion of the population, while the
larger tank serves only one-third of
the city.
“For some reason, the larger tank
was built 15-feet too short,” said Chico
Mayor J.D. Clark. Clark said that the
water pressure is regulated by booster
pumps.
Clark said that engineers working
with the city recommended that a new,
200,000-gallon tank be built, and the
three elevated tanks be put out of service.
The plan will also give the city one
water system.
“(The system) is working, but we
have two systems, so I have two
drought plans, two disinfectant plans
— you just have to do two of everything,” said Eddie Cowley, Chico public
works director. “The new tower would
eliminate the pumps that are having
to run all the time.”
The new tank is to be placed near the
current 200,000-gallon tank. When the
new tank is online, the old tank will
be dismantled. The council has yet to
decide the future of the tank. They will
either sell it or put it in storage.
Cowley said that the city will also
be supported by two, 100,000-gallon
ground storage tanks.
The two eastside towers will remain
in place “for aesthetic reasons,” Clark
said.
“The Texas Historical Commission
would like us to keep those up,” Clark
said, adding that one tank will turn
100 in 2012. Once the tank reaches
100, the city can join an organization
that will help preserve the tank.
“I feel like we’ve done the right thing
for the future,” Clark said. “A lot of
people don’t know these problems exist unless they’ve been involved with
the council or the city.”
The city is currently in the design
phase for the new tank and plans to
accept bids in mid-August or early
September.

Donations needed for Habitat homes
This fall, Trinity Habitat
for Humanity will assist two
families in Bridgeport with
their homes.
For one family — a mother
and her two children — the
organization will build a
new home for the family to
grow into.
For another family, Habitat for Humanity will tackle
exterior issues that have
become impossible for the
family to maintain alone
through the Preserve a
Home: Rehab Program.
But before the projects can
get started, the organization
needs more donations from
the community.
Sponsor relations manager Karen Derrick said
that the organization needs
$33,000 in pledges to begin
the new home and $3,000
more in pledges to restore
the other home.
“We need people to help
us with fundraising to make
sure we can get these jobs
done,” Derrick said.
Trinity Habitat for Humanity needs a total of
$58,000 for the new home
and $13,000 for the refurbish project.
Derrick said that pledges
for the new home need to
be received by Sept. 1. The
project is scheduled to begin
Nov. 5 and will be a “blitz
build” and will be completed
over a period of weeks.
“If we don’t get those
pledges in, we won’t be able
to build her house until April
of next year,” she said.
Pledges for the restore
project need to be in by Aug.
1. The project is slated to begin Oct. 15.
When pledges are in, the
organization will begin lining up volunteers.
“The Preserve a Home
project would be a great project for youth,” Derrick said,
explaining that children 14
and up can volunteer at a
rehabilitation project, while
new home volunteers must
be at least 16.
“We’re really excited,” Derrick said of the projects.
Along with pledges, the
organization needs a volunteer coordinator for the
projects.

FORCE IN NUMBERS — Organizers of Thursday’s meeting hope to gather large groups of landowners to form a coalition in
opposition to the Willow Creek-Hicks transmission line. The preferred route crosses the width of the county from Rhome to
Poolville, with 94 alternative routes crossing through parts of the county.

FM 2123, at which point the line begins to travel southwest
to the Willow Creek switching station.
There are 94 alternate segments zigzagging across southern Wise County and portions of Parker and Tarrant counties.
Oncor filed the preferred and alternate route plans with
the Texas Public Utility Commission June 16, giving landowners until July 16 to file to protest the line or to intervene.
The Wise County Commissioners Court will vote on a
resolution stating the county’s preferred route at a 9 a.m.
Tuesday meeting.
Roberta Campbell, whose property is along segment J of
the preferred route, met with several other concerned landowners June 25 at the church. She scheduled the Thursday
meeting as well.
“The goal is to form a coalition and hire an attorney to
present evidence to the PUC,” Campbell said.
Campbell and her brother inherited the land that could
be crossed by the line. She said that she’s had to deal with
pipelines going through her property, but never a transmission line.
“That’s different than a 345 kilovolt line,” she said.
More than 100 people attended the meeting seeking information.
Lewis Stevens’ property is on the preferred route and he
has already formed a group with surrounding landowners
to fight it. He offered information to the group and encouraged them to file paperwork to intervene.
Stevens warned that the process to become and remain
an intervenor is lengthy, tedious and discouraging.
“Being an intervenor is costly and time consuming, but it
is the best way to be a part of this,” he said.
Stevens explained that once Oncor chooses the route, the
affected landowners will be asked for right-of-way through
their land.
With the odds seemingly stacked against them, the landowners expressed their dismay at the transmission line po-

tentially coming through their land.
“The people down the road have been there for 25 years,”
said one man in the audience. “How do you put value on a
house you’ve lived in 25 years and raised your kids in?”
Another admitted that it would be cheaper to accept an
original offer for right-of-way rather than fight it.
“It’s very scary,” Campbell said. “What I try to tell people
is you can spend your $1,000 and not win.”
But Campbell is dedicated to fighting until the end.
Campbell and Charlie Nelon are heading up the effort to
form a coalition. For information, call Campbell at (940)

BACK IN THE SADDLE — Riders from Bike and Build hit the road after staying the night at the Wesley Center at the First United Methodist Church in Decatur Thursday night.
Group makes cross-country ride to provide housing for needy
By RICHARD GREENE
In the heavy, steamy air of a still July
morning in Decatur, Alex Cohen settles on
his bike for another day on the open road.
“Today we’re riding to Wichita Falls,”
said the Toms River, N.J., native.
“It’s a great way to see the country. I’ve
never seen the South before.”
Cohen is one of 33 riders making a
cross-country ride from Jacksonville, Fla.,
to San Francisco, Calif., with Bike and
Build. The group raises money for affordable housing and also takes an active role
helping to construct houses along their
route. They have a total of 15 building
days during their journey.
“We’re spinning spokes and helping
folks,” said Colin Rossi of Durham, N.C.,
one of the group leaders, who is making
the cross-country trip for a second time.
“The satisfaction of rolling into the West
Coast after making it across the country
is such an awesome experience.”
Each rider raised $4,000 for the trip.
Collectively, they brought in approximately $150,000.

Demases takes 15th
at college finals
Chris Demases narrowly missed
the short-go and came home with a
15th-place finish in tie-down roping
at the College National Finals Rodeo
in Casper, Wyo., June 19.
“I roped good,” Demases said. “I
didn’t get a good draw on calves. I
also broke the barrier on the second
go.”
The Weatherford College student
tied down his calf in 14 seconds in
his first go. On his second try, he recorded a 26. The Boyd native’s third
go was his best, finishing in 9.2 seconds. His time was the third-best
in the round and fourth-best of the
rodeo.
“I made a better run,” Demases
said. “It was just a little too late.”
It was the junior’s first trip to the
national finals and a nice escape
from the Texas heat.
“It was fun,” he said. “It was a lot
cooler.”
Demases was one of three area
riders to compete in the rodeo.
George Rowland of Paradise and
Weatherford College finished 32nd
in tie-down. After a 9.7 in the first
go, he failed to register a score in the
second and third rounds.
Texas Tech’s and Paradise’s C.J.
Kerr finished 32nd in steer wrestling.
He scored a 4.8 in the first round to
put him in seventh place. Kerr did
not score in the second round. In the
third round, Kerr recorded the 29thbest time, 8.3.

Holtz added: “We got to see how it’s affecting people.”
Holtz had previously worked in the Gulf
Coast region with Americorps’ National
Civilian Community Corps.
“I had spent three months in Mississippi,” she said. “To roll back through and
see some of the places I’ve been was really
cool. There’s a lot of work to be done still.”
Throughout their journey, the group has
stayed in a numerous locations and met a
variety of people.
“It’s been an unreal experience, a lot
more than I expected,” said Brandon
Biggs of Merritt Island, Fla. “The best
part is just meeting everyone on the road.
There’s nothing like meeting someone and
standing on their porch and talking during a thunderstorm.”
Many of the riders said the trip has been
enhanced by the collection of people they
have with them.
“I can’t believe how well 33 people can
get along,” Biggs said.
The riders are expected to reach San
Francisco Aug. 9 with thousands of miles
behind them, a lifetime of memories and
the satisfaction of knowing they’ve helped
others.
“It’s a great experience,” Cohen said.
“It’s cool to see the way you’ve touched
others’ lives.”

Boyd awaits completion of new home
By RICHARD GREENE
On his daily drive past
the construction site of the
Yellowjackets’ new football
stadium, Boyd Athletic Director J.G. Cartwright’s eyes
drift from the road.
“One day I’m going to hit
someone head-on while I’m
rubber-necking to see what’s
going on,” the veteran coach
said.
Cartwright is likely not
the only Boyd resident with
wandering eyes as they go
past the busy construction
site headed by construction manager at-risk, Pogue
Construction.
The new stadium and its
supporting facilities were
approved by the Boyd School
Board in November with a
guaranteed maximum price
of $6.7 million.
The stadium will feature
an artificial playing surface,
3,000 seats and an eightlane track. The district
is also building a 12,000square-foot fieldhouse at
the north end of the stadium
with a weight room, dressing rooms and offices for the
coaching staff.
This past week, crews
began building the visitor
bleachers along the east
side of the stadium, giving
it some shape and fueling
more excitement.
“It’s real exciting,” said
Cartwright, who has been
at Boyd since 1974. “The
district stepped up to provide us something we can be
proud of.”
No firm finish date has
been established. Cartwright attended a construction
meeting Thursday
morning. He is hopeful that
the majority of the facility
will be ready by the start of
school.
“Right now, the press box
has got everything behind,”
he said. “Everything will be
ready but the press box.
“We’re hoping we’ll be in
the fieldhouse by the start
of school.”
Cartwright said there is
a chance they could play
their season opener Aug. 27
against Godley in the new
stadium.
“We’re hoping it’s ready
for the first game,” he said.
“If not, it could be homecoming against Henrietta (Sept.
10) or our first district game
(Pottsboro, Oct. 8).”
The Yellowjackets plan to
work out on the field’s allweather surface daily.
“This past year with all
the rain, we had our varsity,
junior varsity and junior
high working out in this one
little area that stayed dry,”
Cartwright said.
Construction crews are
busy working on the new
fieldhouse, which is still
without a roof. The new
fieldhouse will replace one
that was completed in 1983.
It will feature three separate dressing areas.
“The fieldhouse is going
to be nice,” Cartwright said.
“It’s going to have three
locker rooms. We’re busting
at the seams. Over there,
we’ll have a lot more room.”
The new fieldhouse also
will house a weight room
that will be a vast improvement over the Yellowjackets’
current facility.
“The weight room is such
an important part of developing a program,” Cartwright said. “This weight
room is bigger and will have
air conditioning and heat.
Right now, we have to open
the big garage door. We’re
hot in the summer and cold
in the winter.”
Until construction is finished, Cartwright will try
to keep his eyes on the road
the best he can.
Along with the new stadium, Boyd’s basketball and
volleyball teams will open
a new gym this fall. Crews
Thursday were applying a
finish to the gym floor. The
large gym with an auxiliary
court is expected to be ready
for the start of volleyball
two-a-days in August.
