If you saw Lynda Howell when she was here a few years ago,I
know you’ll want to come back, because you know what a treat it
was! Many of her patterns are available as both traditional hand
embroidery and machine hoop embroidery, so everyone loves them.
Everyone loves Lynda, too. You’ll look far to find a kinder, more
enthusiastic, and sharing person. The ideas just flow out of her, and
you’ll go home inspired!

It sure is nice of people to take time to
tell us they appreciate us! We all love a
pat on the back, and
sometimes it even makes our day!
Thanks so much!
Erica and Staff
I was very impressed with the packaging of
my hanger order - so neat and wrapped.
Also love the extra shopping bag gift and the
three tootsie rolls just topped it off. Two
thumbs up! These hangers were the only
ones I found within the United States. The
only other hangers I located were from
Australia at triple the price. So yes -- I like
you, I like you very much. Elissa Yost,
Painted Post, NY
I love your site and how it flows. It is great
fun just looking around and your prices are
super. I've told all of my quilting friends
about your site too. Thank you for providing
a site that is so easy to use. Susan Van
Wyk, Palm Beach Gardens, FL
Just want to thank you so much for the wonderful fabrics and tote bag you sent me!! I
have been at my daughter's for a week taking care of my grandkids, and when I got
home found your lovely package waiting for
me. What a wonderful treat! Thank you so
much for your kindness and generosity! I
really enjoy reading your blog as well and
have spent so much time combing over your
website. I could come up with a very long
want list from your site because you carry all
my favorite things. Best wishes, Ruth
Berke, Washburn, WI
I am so happy that I have found Erica's.
Truly enjoyed finding the blog. I too am a
feline fancier. 3 house cats and 2 feral cats
that appreciate using the 3 season room during these winter days and nights. Sorry I
don't have South Bend in my current travels
but if ever . . . I will find your store. Thank
God for e-mail access and your kindness.
Lois Springsteen, Sheridan, MI
Thank you very much. Very efficient customer service, I'll be sure to tell my friends.
Thanks again. Pat Soderquist Beverly Hills,

My package arrived Saturday. Thanks for
such great service. I really appreciated the
communication about the backorder and then
having the opportunity to decide how to proceed. With this positive experience, I look forward to dealing with you again.
Beth Pritchett, Kokomo, IN
I received the order yesterday. Thank you
very much. I appreciate all the effort you
have taken to keep me updated on the back
ordered magazine. I will definitely recommend you and order from you again. Carol
Mayhew, Sherwood, Oregon
I just received my order of 3 zippers and
want to tell you how delighted I am. I
searched all my local stores and all the big
fabric stores' websites and nobody had the
color separating zippers I needed. Not only
did you have them in stock, but the colors
are perfect. That's not always the case when
ordering online. Also, communication was
great, shipping costs reasonable and I got
my order in just 7 days! I commend you on
your fantastic customer service and pleasant
shopping experience. I only wish Erica's brick
and mortar store was in my neighborhood.
Jane Hall, Abingdon, MD
Thanks for letting me know that my order is
on the way. I can't wait to get it. You are an
awesome company and I look forward to
shopping with you again in the future!

New Mystery Quilt Club
It's been several years since I hosted a mystery, and the minute I saw
this quilt, I knew it was the one I’d been waiting for! It is an absolutely
stunning quilt, traditional in feel. The color instructions and diagrams are
well written.
Make our Quilter’s Celebration Quilt in lap size (77" x 77") or queen
(111" x 111"), from the beautiful Moda Cinnamon Spice fabrics (approximately $100 or $180 respectively) it was designed in, or choose your own
fabrics with the same color values. (Price will vary with fabric choice.)
You'll need only 2 or 3 hours each month to complete the steps.
If you're working the mystery with me (Erica) in the shop, we'll be
meeting each month on the first Saturday morning starting October 6th
and I'll be revealing the next clue and showing you the steps for that
month. You’ll get new clues for 8 months (if you have to miss a meeting,
you may pick up your clue), and we’ll have a “Reveal Party” in
September, 2013, to show off our Quilter’s Celebration quilts! Club fee
is $30.

Jo Ellen Jongkind, LaPorte, IN, was the evening Sew-er of the
Month with her piecing of the Baskets of Hope quilt. It was hand quilted by the Pioneer Land Quilters. This quilt will be auctioned on July
13th at the annual La Porte County Fairgrounds Pioneer Land auction
with proceeds going to Pioneer Land. Runner-up was Cynthia-Ann
Price from Bremen, IN. She made a fun rag quilt with camping motifs.
Daytime winner was Lois Lentz, St Joe, MI, with her beautiful Jinny
Beyer quilt. Her friend, Carol Klass, also from St Joe, made the
Whimsical Garden quilt (A16537), so pretty with a dark background!

Marcia Reynolds from South Bend was the Sew-er of the Month for
the evening group, but unfortunately this photo doesn’t show either
the pretty embroidered cutwork on her jacket or her pretty smile!
Runner-up was Maggi Sweeney from St Joe, MI, with her myriad of
table runners. This gal just can’t quit making them! She’s even lost
track of how many she’s made. (And she brought more to the May
Sewing Club!)
Daytime winner was Mary Ann Davis from Granger, who has
made several bags . She’s put a light colored lining with bright
edging on the pockets. On some of them she also serged strips to
make flower embellishments. Runner up was Joyce Becker from
Elkhart, IN, with her Oriental Lady wallhanging, on which she used
her digitizing skills as well as sewing skills.

Sew-er of the Month in our evening group. What a great gift for a young boy!
Mary Brouette, from Plymouth, IN, was winner in the daytime group. Her
great quilt had a background from earth to sky with pieced flying geese rows
and appliqued geese flying. Clever!
Runners-up were Barb Arnold, Granger, IN, who made her quilt as a sampler challenge from a Jelly Roll. Betty Pflugshaupt, Hamlet, IN, used photo
fabric to make a wonderful graduation gift!

The Kids’ Sewing I class started recently
with 5 new students. They had a great
time learning how the machine works and
looked to the rest of their lessons.
Front to back on the right are Abby (great
granddaughter of proud grandparents Erica
and Dick,) Gabby,
and Matthew. Below are Lauren and
Jane.
Willow, Autumn, and Allison (clockwise from back left) all from South Bend
were in our You Pick! Kids’ Class. They
had a great time making pillows, Pack
and Go bags, and hair scrunchies.

Same class, totally different quilts! Wow!
These are from our Four Patch Stacked Posies class.
This one was made by Kay House-Clark
from Granger, IN.
Shawn Hannon from Elkhart, IN with
her version
Daisy Ebert from LaPorte, (and one of our
Sewing Consultants) made this one with
extra sashing pieces and cornerstones.
There were several others, and even if they used the same fabric, the quilts were different! What a fun class and beautiful quilts!
The proud teacher,
Nancy, stands behind
some of her students in
the “Quilting, Start to
Finish” class.
Looks like the students
are proud, too, as they
should be!

Ann Climer from South Bend,
IN shared this great bag she
made for her daughter using an
Amy Butler pattern. We all
loved the owls!
Betty Byers from Valparaiso,
IN, brought this beautiful quilt
to Handi Quilter Club.
Beautiful piecing and quilting!
Charity Johnson from Goshen IN
made this quilt for fun, but it turns
out that it was the perfect gift for a
co-worker who's having a baby
soon. Lovely gift!
Cindy Birr from Goshen IN made this beautiful
quilt top using the Gumdrops Pattern from Sew
Scrappy: Quilts for Fabric Lovers (item
#A14687). She's making it as a gift for her aunt.
Davina Borlik of North Liberty, IN shared her amazing quilt with us. Her 85 year-old
mother, Thelma Miller, hand painted the beautiful flowers on the quilt. Davina did the
piecing and then quilted it on her Handi Quilter. A beautiful joint venture!

Evelyn Cummings from Winfield, IL, came
in to show us this warm and toasty sweater
with us.. She used Debbie Bliss yarn to
make the sweater for herself and it will be
modeled in a fashion show! (Sorry we
caught you with your eyes closed, Evelyn!)
Helen LaFollette from South Bend, IN
made this joyous quilt as a lap robe for a
friend. The butterfly fabric on the front was
her inspiration for some great butterfly
quilting!
Gail Leonard from South Bend came in
to share this lovely pastel quilt she
made for her granddaughter. It was
quilted by Diane James from our
Sewing Department.
Jeff Schroeder from South Bend, IN
brought in his comfy looking quilt. He didn't use a pattern, just sewed pieces together as he liked them. He also pieced the
back as well as the front of the quilt, and
tied it with yarn.

Jannet Gerald brought this T-shirt quilt to
Creative Sewing Club and shared its story.
Talk about being creative!
It started when she was talking to her son
from Tennessee on the phone. She told
him how excited she was that she was taking one of our beginning quilting class and
learning so much!
The next thing she knew, a box arrived in
the mail from him and she couldn’t imagine
what it was. When she opened the box, she
found a note on the top of a lot of tissue
paper. She went on to tell this story:
The note was one that every mother would love to get. He was telling me how much
he loved me and what a great mom I have been, and that he missed me, too. I
thought, “How sweet of him!”
Well, when I got to the end of that awesome note, I found a P.S.
“Mom, would you please make me a t-shirt quilt?”
That box had 20 t-shirts in it!
I thought to myself, “here I am with one class under my belt, and he wants a quilt to
show his friends.” I was freaking out!
It just happened that I got the newsletter from Erica`s. Low, and behold, they were offering a class called “Preparing a T-shirt Quilt” and a class on how to make it, also. Wow!
I called right away to sign up for those classes. I took the t-shirt preparing class and I
was unable to take the other because of a funeral out of town. Thanks to all the wonderful gals at Erica’s who answered many questions and helped me choose material, I
got the quilt completed.
When he receives his quilt, there is going to be a note. It will say,
“Son, you owe me big time. I just had to purchase a new sewing machine from Erica
to make this quilt. When I get old, I plan to live with you! Since you love me so much I
know that you will take good care of me.
Love,
Your aging mother
P.S I love and miss you, too.
I can tell you, she had a hard time finishing the story with all the laughter and appreciation from the other mothers in the room!

JoAnne Parks from Elkhart, IN dropped off quite
a few pillowcases. These were not her first! In
fact, at that point, she had made 301 pillowcases
in five and a half weeks! The pillow cases were
primarily for our ConKerr Cancer project, but she
also made some for those fighting breast cancer.
Way to go, JoAnne! And by the way, JoAnne is
79 years old. She said it's ok for me to share
that because she's "earned it!"
John Twichell, from Elkhart, IN, is a cross-stitcher
extraordinaire! He has shown us other masterpieces,
and this is his Angel of Love.
This amazing star quilt was made by Karen
Stutsman from Mishawaka, IN. She started with a
pattern called Kentucky Bow and modified it. She
and her husband worked together to choose fabrics
for the quilt and she had it quilted by Three Sisters
near New Paris, IN. They chose beautiful feather
designs that fit perfectly inside the blocks. The back
of the quilt is as beautiful as the front!

Joan Fahey of South Bend, IN,
made this beautiful ABC afghan for
her very first great granddaughter,
Sula. She counted and stitched an
amazing number of crosses!
Judith Reese, Elkhart, IN, made what she calls
"Grandma's Bag" with help from her 4 year old
relative. She used the Mini Bow Tucks pattern(16606), Texture Magic (26056), and the yoyo maker (25079) to embellish the flap.
Joyce McCoy, from South
Bend, brought in two quilts.
She wasn’t quite sure who the
baby quilt was for yet, because
there were several babies on
the way in her family.
The Harley Davidson T-shirt
quilt was for her husband. She
had stories about each and
every one along with the pictures she included. This It’s
wonderful to give a memory
quilt!
Judy Lane from Muskegon, MI,
started with the Bow Tucks Tote
pattern (16606) and used the Lil'
Twister tool (A12617) to make
the fabric pieces. What a great
idea and a unique tote!
Sandy Wagner, Dowagiac, MI,
put several secret pockets for
storing valuables in her patchwork bag. She used the
Heartstrings fabric line. It’s a
beauty, Sandy!

Kristen Janowsky from South
Bend made her Turning 20 quilt
in Notre Dame colors for a friend.
Lucky friend!
She made the one on the right
from Moda’s Etchings fabric line
for her brother’s birthday
Her piecing and Joan Duvall’s
quilting combined to make a
great gift for him!
Being a quilter herself, Kristin was very
appreciative of the Quilt of Valor presented
to her by Di Richards, Indiana Regional
Coordinator. We are also so appreciative of
Kristin’s 30 years of service to her country.
Thank you so much!
Erica’s was honored to be a part of Kristin’s
recognition. Quilts of Valor has presented
over 66,000 quilts to American service men
and women. We are a drop-off spot and
would love to accept any you might like to
donate. More information about Quilts of
Valor is available at http://qovf.org/.
Mary Lou Browne from Niles, MI
hand quilts doll blankets and
baby blankets for her greatgranddaughter.
She also
made this lovely needlepoint
“crazy patch” for herself.

Paula Fisette (South Bend, IN) is
another master cross-stitcher who has
shared her masterpieces with us!
This one is titled "Always Together"
and it only took her seven months to
finish. It’s a fabulous gift for Paula's
brother-in-law and his fiancee.
Sue Smith, also from South Bend, shared her
beautiful paper pieced wallhanging with us.
She used all batik fabrics and modified the pattern she was using just a little bit. It's Think
Spring (item 29013) and we have a fabric pack
available, too. (item 68768) This was Sue's
first time free- motion quilting and she did a
good job!
Rolene Hodge from Berrien Springs,
MI, brought in her checkerboard quilt
top. I love the on-point design.
Beautiful, Rolene!
Many thanks to Susan Adamek from
South Bend IN who came in during our
Anniversary Celebration and showed us
her Pearl Louise Block of the Month
Sissy’s Closet quilt top. (A16692) Susan
said this was her first quilt! Wow!!

Wanda Farr (Buchanan, MI) loves making bags! Her pink bag with butterflies is an
enlargement of a snap top closure bag pattern. The “market bag” she made up on her
own. She added pockets to the outside to make it even more useful! Her largest and
final bag was made using the Mondo bag pattern. Wanda’s all set to go, no matter what
size bag she might need!
Jeanne Grabe from Battle Creek, MI, knitted this beautiful shawl. She chose the perfect shawl pin to complete the project!

Darleen Davis (Receiving Department) took our
Saturday Sampler class over 10 years ago, but
finished it! It was certainly worth the wait!
Diane James (Sewing Department) quilted it.
Linda Ullery (Counter
Staff) made this pretty,
bright Bali quilt top using
the popular Twister Tool
(A12618).
Guinn Shapiola (Counter Staff) made this beautiful shawl which you may want to make, too! You
can find the pattern for free at http://lionbrand.com.
It's called the Tranquil Wrap. Guinn used Vanna's
Choice yarn in Silver Blue (37864)
The shawl, along with the Daisy Rosewood Shawl
Pin (A12747) would make a great gift!
Rebecca Adams, recently a newlywed (congratulations, Becky!) made
this quilt for her daughter's graduation. The top only took about an hour
and a half to make because she
used 10-Minute Blocks (A12648).
The fabric is Strawberry Fields from
Moda.

Knitters’ Notes
~ Practice Makes Perfect ~
You want to learn some new stitches (knit or crochet) but are afraid to get yourself into a
major project when you are unsure of your skills. How do you practice those cool stitches without making a mess of lots of expensive yarn and spending ages working only to have to rip out?
Swatches!
We offer a class here, Beyond the Basics, for both knit and crochet, that teaches some different stitches and techniques while you make small squares. You have enough time to learn how
to make the stitch, but don't spend forever struggling or waste your precious yarn. You can do
the same thing at home (though we suggest you join us in class when you can).
When a new knitter wants to try different stitches, I often suggest getting a dishcloth book.
These books, in both knit or crochet, often offer several different stitches to create the small
squares (sometimes they even teach how to knit/crochet circles). The cotton yarn used for
dishcloths is inexpensive, comes in lots of colors and shows stitches very clearly. You only need
an evening or two to complete one dishcloth and you'll feel much more comfortable with the
stitch by the time you're finished.
Each yarn label suggests the number of stitches needed to create a 4” swatch (I really do need
to research why 4”). But you can do a similar thing with great reference books such as
“Encyclopedia of Knitting” (A15329) or “Knitting Stitches Visual Encyclopedia” (A14815) or the
“Crochet Stitches Visual Encyclopedia” (A14816). Choose whichever stitch patterns you like
and check the stitch requirements to make a swatch. Cast on the number needed and knit or
crochet until you have an approximate square. When you finish one pattern, begin another. You
can try any number of stitch patterns and expand your skills. Each square takes a small
amount of yarn, a small amount of time, and hopefully only a small amount of frustration in the
learning process.
Once you have a variety of squares made (did I mention this is SO portable, you can come & go
on vacation with your swatches) you can combine them into all sorts of useful and fun items.
Make a scarf by sewing your squares into a single row or a table topper by combining squares
into three or four rows then combining the rows. You can add rows of knitting or crochet to
even out the squares if they end up slightly different sizes. If you really want to make a big deal
out of swatches, do enough to create an afghan! Choose your favorite colors for your squares
and just keep going until you have enough to cover yourself (or someone you love). Think of all
the patterns you'll learn! Think of all the practice you'll be getting! Think of the great item you'll
have at the end!
Remember, practice isn't all bad or all boring. Get to work, learn something new and make yourself something great!

Our Craft e r K i t t y
Puccini loves my Mama and
her Kitten quilt. We have
the pattern and fabric pack,
so you can make one, too!
If you have photos of your
Crafter Kitty that you’d like
to share, please email them
to me. [email protected]
Did you look at this picture and think, “MY cat’s a sew-er (or crafter),
too! He (or she) should be in Erica’s newsletter!” If you have a kitty
that shares your love of crafts and sewing, and you catch him in the
act, email a picture (with good resolution) and a SHORT (you know
how we feline fanatics can go on and on!) paragraph about it.
Send it to me at [email protected]. We use kitty pictures in our
online newsletter and in the local paper newsletter, and we’re so happy to help
show off these delightful felines for their human companions. So get out your
camera, and catch your special “fur-purrson” crafting!

Sharon Mc Kenzie and Woodie live in Niles, MI. with a sister, Lillie, and a little
puppy.
Here he was helping Sharon lay out some of the pieces for a tree skirt for her
daughter. As usual with felines, the help usually slows us down. Sharon says he’s
about 10 years old, and is a real scaredy
cat. However, it’s obvious that he’s not
scared of slowing down progress!

Guest Crafter Kitties
Sue Stringfellow sent this photo of her beloved
“Fuzzy Butt” trying to fit into the box, like a photo
I’d shared of my Tchaikovsky trying to fit into a
basket.
Doesn’t he just look like he’s daring someone to
move him? Fuzzy (for short) is her constant
companion, and he always has to be right in the
middle of whatever she’s doing. He’s beautiful!
Janet Henne quilts with her cat
Dubbie in Madson, AL. Here he
was doing his final inspection of
her log cabin quilt top. “Yep, it
does have over 4,000 pieces!”
Fantastic, Janet! Both the cat and
the quilt!
Janet went to stay with her mother for a
while in South Carolina, and found that
her mother’s cats, Buttercup and
Jefferson (Siamese) also appreciated
her handiwork.
That’s it!! I’m out of Crafter Kitty photos!
After having a waiting list of loveable craft and sewing kitties for years, you’ve seen my
last ones!
That means I need you to get out your camera, catch a kitty (or two or three)
crafting with you!
Send a high resolution photo and a paragraph or two about you and your
“fur-purrsons”, along with where you live, to me at [email protected].
More Crafter Kitties here.

Seasonal quilts and small
projects are what you'll
find in A Year of Cozy
Comforts. There are four
quilts (the April Showers
quilt with its umbrellas is a
fave) as well as four small
projects including wool
work, cross stitch and pillows. As an added
bonus, there's also a seasonal recipe in each
section! Food and quilting, what could be bet-
ter! The quilts feature simple pieced background and lovely applique. A16541 (23.95)
We have an addition to the
“Best of Fons & Porter”
quilt book series, this time
for the youngsters in your
life. Baby & Kids Quilts
offers 39 great projects for
children from babies to
teens. Depending on the
fabric choices, many of these would be great
for grown-ups too. Whimsical themes, soft
colors and textures, and cute prints highlight
the baby and toddler side of things, while the
teen designs feature bold and bright colors, and
themed-prints are good for the older child.
Quite a value – start while they are young and
you can make quilts as they grow! A16545

Sunday Morning Quilts
proclaims “Celebrate great
fabric by using every scrap.”
Here you'll find 16 wonderful modern-style quilts that
feature scrappy styles. Even
if you never make one of the
quilts (though they are so cool), you'll love the
colorful inspiration and helpful “manage your
scraps” tips inside this book. If you have fabrics you just love, make a great quilt so you
can enjoy them every day. I'm going to get a
copy of this one for myself! A16505 (22.95)
Too cute! Story Time,
Picture Quilts to Stir a
Child's Imagination, will
do just that with the darling quilts inside. One
quilt features the busy day
of a cute puppy, while
another shows the routine
for a bunny headed for bed. Basic piecing and
cute appliques will make you smile while
you're working on these projects. Youngsters
will love the pigs, turtles and bubble gumblowing owls. A16544 (25.95)

Reproduction fans will
enjoy Civil War Legacies,
the latest from Carol
Hopkins. There are 15 patterns that make use of
reproduction fabrics.
These small quilts (largest

wonderful scrappy style and traditional charm.
I love the warm scrappy feel of these quilts,
and smaller is better (and easier to get finished)! A16542 ($24.99)
More history, but of a country kind. Every Barn Tells a
Story offers 20 sampler quilt
blocks as well as stories
about 20 barns that are
adorned with painted quilt
blocks. You'll see wonderful
photos of the barns, read the story of the barn
and its owners, and get complete instructions
for piecing the same block that's on the barn.
There's a sampler quilt that includes all the
blocks, or several smaller projects made up of
just one or a few blocks. There are also cross
stitch, embroidery and applique projects as
well as some recipes. A16566 ($27.95)
Do you love the red, white
and blue? This book is for
you! The latest in the Best
of Fons & Porter series is
Patriotic Quilts. In this volume, you'll find 30 great patterns to show off your patriotism. Stars of every kind,
as well as stripes, eagles, and hearts, are here.
Many of the quilts have a wonderful scrappy
feel, while several are successful because of
the colors selected for the pieces. Most of the
quilts are larger, but there are also runners and
wall hangings, too. “Echoing Stars” is a modern style star quilt, while “Blackbird Crossing”
has a great scrappy look, though it stays within
the red, white and blue range. A16556

Modern Quilt Alert! We have

those who love the look of a
modern quilt. Sunrise features

Pickle Relish features a few colored blocks
arranged on a solid background. Leftovers has
a scrappy feel, yet is thoroughly modern with
narrow strips of color on a solid background.

I remember the hankies with crocheted edges
that my mother used to have. Embellishing
with the Edge Perfect Blade (A12173) takes
that idea many steps forward.
With the introduction of the

The newest pattern from the “Bow Tucks”

a chance to talk with Penny at Quilt Market. I
asked her about the foamtype stabilizers, and she said
that would be hard to use
with this new bag, and
many of her others because
of the numbers of layers in
some of the seams, and
introduced me to Bosal’s

looked. We’re now carrying both. A12659

run into a ruler or pin at 90 miles an hour
and taken a chunk out of the blade, forget
it! What I like so much about these is
that we don’t tend to put off the sharpening like we do putting in a new blade, so
we enjoy cutting so much more!
So now you have
sharp blades and
can cut easily.
You have a new
needle in your

sewing those strips together! (See my

Studio 180 Is one of the most popular
designers on our website. Many of us

Now she’s added four “Technique

to make different units with the rulers you
already have and others that don’t use
special tools, but really add pizzazz to
your piecing. They all give you a wide
variety of sizes, so you have the perfect

Deb Tucker’s new tool,
Spotlight creates a fundamental unit that is sure to
add sparkle to your quilt
block designs. Although the
ruler shape is similar to the
V Block, the final unit has
two seam lines radiating
from a single corner, so the
center triangle in the finished unit resembles a beam of light shining out of that
corner. As with Deb’s other tools, the
block is larger when you make it, so you
can trim it to size accurately. I love that!

If you want a beautiful,

Cuddle Strip Quilt Kits!

Creative Grid’s Bias Ruler Simplified
has you fold
your fabric to be
able to use a shorter ruler, which may be
easier for some people to use. The folding instructions are right on the ruler, so
you don’t have to remember them.
A16948 (18.95).
The Bias Ruler as you see it here, is
folded in half,
making it easy to
store, but when you unfold it, you use a
half yard or fat quarter and lay it on the
bias grain of the whole piece without
folding. It also has flat corners, so your
pieces go together without the extra ¼”
having to stick out on both sides. A16980

We have several
Engraving Art Copper
Foil kits. One of the new
ones caught my eye.
These kits allow you to
create fantastic 8" x 10"
foil artwork. You just
scrape the lines that are
pre-printed on the board. There’s a practice board and scraping tool included.
Giraffe and Baby is so realistic, and
beautiful. The suggested age child is 8
and over, but adults might enjoy this craft
as well. A17093 (4.49)
There are a few things we
picked up at Quilt Market
that aren’t in yet as I’m
writing this, but we hope
will be in soon! The
Swatch Buddies are a
great new system for
organizing and buying
fabric. In the package you get a chain,
tags, adhesive to easily attach a neat fabric sample to the tag, and labels to make
notes about the fabric line, amount you
have, etc. Then just bring it in if you
need more, or if you want to find fabric to
go with what you have. They’re reusable,
too, with refills available. There are
packs of 12 (A12655), shown here, 24, or
48, as well as refills! Pre-order them and
get them as soon as we do!
Something
else I’m
looking forward to is
The Finger
Thing. It’s
a beautiful
purple metal
tool that can be molded to fit whichever
finger you want to use it on. The rounded point works like an awl when sewing
on a machine. Easily control the direction
of the seams and protect your fingertips at
the same time. Since you don’t have to
hold it, your other fingers and thumb can
still be used to guide the fabric! Use it
when pressing seams open. The rounded
tip holds the fabric in place and protects
your fingers from the heat of the iron.

40 Spring Quilt Market
Report
In May, Erica, Dick, Cathy & I
spent a week in Kansas City at
the Spring Quilt Market. For
those of you who don't know,
Quilt Market is a twice-a-year
trade show for those in the fabric and quilting industry. Stores like Erica's
attend to see and order the newest fabrics,
patterns, books and notions. We also get to
meet designers and learn about new trends
and techniques. Soon you'll be seeing all
sorts of new items at the store (and on the
web site,) but here's a preview of what to look
for. (Some of these may be in by the time you
read this.)
Actually, now that our two Cathys both go, I
have a lot more time to run around and find
things I like, and Dick “networks,” while the
gals do the heavy work like guessing what fabrics you’re going to want several months
ahead and deciding on models and displays.
We ordered Shannon “Cuddle” fabrics and
kits. This soft snuggly fabric is lovely to touch,
and the company puts together kits to create
fast and easy blankets. We have several
blanket kits, both for children and adults as
well as bolts of Cuddle to back the blankets.
Northcott has a new patriotic line of
Stonehenge colors and prints. A stunning
eagle panel is part of this group. Benartex
has new colorful lines as well as a pretty
hydrangea line that I fell in love with (soft colors, very "spa"). We just received a solid line
of solid fabrics, Cotton Couture from Michael
Miller that has great colors and a wonderful
soft sheen. We have some other solids on
order from Moda, as well as a great group
from Primitive Gatherings (red,cream,blue).
Moda also did the fabric for the Mystery Quilt
we’ll start in October.
Modern quilting is THE thing. Everywhere
we looked there were examples of modern
quilting and lots of patterns and books. Many
of these are on their way to the store.
Atkinson Designs has a new
book, "Graphic Mixx", which has a
number of projects with a modern
feel - we'll have the trunk show in
the store in July (see more info
elsewhere in the newsletter).
Weeks Ringle and Bill Kerr
(Modern Quilt Studio) were at
Quilt Market and we got a chance
to speak with Weeks. We're planning to have
them come to the store in 2013 (as soon as
their schedule allows). We ordered new patterns from them as well as a quarterly magazine they produce. Modern Quilting 101 - here
are a few things that make a quilt modern:
clean lines, simple shapes, lots of negative
space, an industrial feel (versus a natural
vibe).
In contrast to Modern, hand work was very
evident again. Lynette Anderson has new
fabrics (cute Christmas and Halloween lines,
due later this summer) and new books and
patterns that feature hand embroidery and
patchwork. Primitive Gatherings has some
great new patterns, in patchwork, wool work,
and embroidery. Buttermilk Basin, one of our
favorite wool pattern companies, has cute seasonal pin cushions and my favorite: a wool
stuffed sheep that has a set of 12 seasonal
wool blankets!
(I found neat bag patterns, notions, and
machine things. Check out the wonderful new
seam rippers in our New and Noteworthy
columns. You can also see what Jennifer puts
up on the website each day.)
So much more - lots of new books, fabrics
from all your favorite companies, trunk shows,
special events, class ideas, and so on and so
on.
We are so excited about all the new things, so
tired from the hard work that will bring all of it
to you. (I want to finish the newsletters to get
to new projects) We’re SO glad to be home!
At least until we start it all over in Houston in
October for Fall Quilt Market!

Everyone loves Lynda, too. You’ll look far to find a kinder, more

Club fee
is $30.

We can help the women of Afghanistan
learn to sew, learn a life skill, and better
their lives. Join Master Sergeant Clara
Vargas and her team of American soldiers in Clara's Calling! Their mission:
to teach over 4,000 widowed Afghan
women how to sew so they can provide
basic necessities for themselves and their children and begin to lift themselves out of abject poverty.
Please bring in sewing supplies, notions, fabrics that you know you won't use
or that you have extra of, and we will send them on for you. It's a chance to
show these women that Americans care, and help them raise their children to
know that also. Erica’s is proud to join these soldiers in their mission.
For more information, check in the store and online at www.clarascalling.com .
We are collecting pillowcases for this wonderful cause again! The brightly colored
pillowcases are delivered to local hospital children’s oncology wards to help brighten
the stay of the youngsters while they’re there.
We use our Hot Dog Pillowcase pattern from our blog, but other standard size pillowcases are fine, too. If you’re interested in helping with this program, please contact

Let us show you why we love our Handi Quilters!
Kimmy Brunner, two time Machine Quilting Teacher of
the Year winner, and author of two of our best selling
DVDs (Machine Quilting for Beginners and Twirly
Whirly Feathers,) got a Handi Quilter Avante a while
ago, and posted a note on the Internet. I’ve taken
classes from this amazing teacher and credit her DVD
with teaching me how to do the beautiful feathers you
see on several of my quilts. I asked her permission to
quote her here and she was delighted to be quoted.
“I've been longarming since 1998, have owned two
26 inch machines, have quilted over 3000 quilts
for customers, have taught on pretty much every
machine out there and I can honestly say that my Avante is the best
machine I've ever laid hands on. I love it. It purrs like a kitten, runs any
thread I throw at it, makes consistently lovely fine stitches, never
requires me to fuss with the tension apart from a few simple turns of the
tension knob when I'm running an especially fragile specialty thread, the
stitch regulator keeps up with me flawlessly no matter what I'm doing,
and it allows me to do the most tightly controlled stitching with no wear
and tear on my body. Did I mention that I love it?”

etc. Join Janet as she shows you how to create
a fun home accessory. 1 class, Fri, Sep 7,

NEEDLEWORK
Choose Your Own Needlepunch
Project—It’s another of the old techniques
that has become new again and is the rage
throughout the US. An ancient Russian
technique, worked from the wrong side of the
fabric, it’s fun and easy to learn. It’s quick and
easy and portable, and the projects are
generally just 3-4 inches in size. Choose your
own design from the many kits and or patterns
we have available. Class pack, the needle kit, is
$14.17 + tax. 1 class, Sat, Aug 18, 9:4511:45am
Crochet-Baby Sweater,

increase your child’s sewing skills
or develop a lifelong hobby. When the child
picks her own project and fabric, there’s
additional motivation and pride. Kids can
choose from a variety of patterns to make a
project that interests them. Becky will help
them build on the basic skills they have. (Not
for beginners.) Kids need to be 8-12 years old.

can be worked in any
lightweight yarn (we used ultra soft bamboo
yarn). To take this class, you need to know
how to chain and single crochet. Skills in
pattern reading, gauge, increasing, decreasing
and the lace design for this project will all be
taught. 2 weeks, starting Mon, Sep 10, 6:309:00pm
Kids’ Sewing-Pajama
Pants—Hey Kids, join Becky
Crochet-Beyond the
Basics—Do you know the
Kids’ Sewing-Let me pick
a project!—A great way to
for another fun-filled class.
Kids will continue to improve
on skills learned in Kids’
Sewing I (or must know basic sewing) and will
work on reading patterns, layout and cutting.
Students will then learn to make a casing, work
with elastic, and learn to hem. This is for 8-12
year olds. (Machines provided) 2 weeks,
starting Tue, Jul 17, 9:45-11:45am
Kids’ Sewing I—Becky has taught children
and loves seeing them learn one of her favorite
things to do. We have a great textbook with
basic information put in a really fun format,
basics, but want to learn more?
Are you intrigued by more
elaborate stitch patterns? Do you want to try
new stitches, but aren’t sure what to do? Join
Janet for this class, where you’ll expand your
crochet skills and learn new techniques and
stitches to take you beyond the beginner level.
Increase, decrease, gauge, stitches and reading
a pattern will all be covered. Class pack, the
book, is $19.95 + tax. 3 weeks, starting Sat, Jul
28, 1:00-3:30pm
Crochet-Shawl—Shawls are very
popular right now, whether used as a
59 fashion statement, for warmth, or glitzy for
parties and proms, they are a great addition
to your wardrobe. We’ve chosen a yarn with a
bit of sparkle to make the project shine, but you
may choose any sport-weight yarn. You’ll need
to know how to chain and single crochet to take
the class. You’ll get practice reading a pattern
and Janet will teach you how to double and
treble crochet as she guides you through the
steps to make this charming triangular
crocheted shawl. Class pack, the book, is $9.95
+ tax. 3 weeks, starting Wed, Sep 5, 6:309:00pm

basics of how to crochet in the first class. After

OWNER ’ S CLASSES AND
ACTIVITIES
These classes are especially
for people who have bought
their sewing and embroidery
machines at Erica’s, as a
“thank you” for supporting
us. If you’ve recently moved
into our area and have a
Viking or Baby Lock, please
contact us about participating with us. Note-all
other classes shown in other categories are
open to everyone.
Erica’s Creative Serger Club—
If you bought your current serger at
Erica’s, consider joining out Serger Club! Lynn
will present techniques and projects that will
help you learn more about and get more out of
this wonderfully versatile sewing tool. Class
pack costs will vary, depending on the project
or technique. Club fee is $30 for six meetings.
Meetings are the second Monday of every other
month starting in September. See page 54 for
Club dates.
Erica’s Creative Sewing
Club—If you bought your
serger or sewing machine from
Erica’s, a year’s membership
is automatic for most models,
and you’ll get special discounts at
the meetings. Mary Ann Lienhart-Cross, the
Sewing Department ladies, and I share our
excitement and enthusiasm for quilting, sewing,
and fabric crafting, giving you hints, patterns,
and sewing and serging updates. The same
presentation is given in the evening and the
next morning. We have a wonderful group of
people who share this common interest of
sewing, and you can make new friends while
you get new ideas. This is an opportunity
specifically for our sewing machine and serger
customers, but if you have a Viking or Baby
Lock and just moved to our area, or didn’t
know about us, please check with us if you’re
interested. See page 54 for Club dates.
Erica’s Handi
Quilter Club—
This is an
opportunity for Erica
to share techniques
and ideas with our
Handi Quilter Frame
System owners.
Each meeting will include hints and tips, a
technique or two, and a project to work on at
home. Everyone is encouraged to bring along
quilts they’ve done, or want help with. Club
fee is $30 for 6 meetings, and there will be a
small charge for handouts at the meeting. If
there is space, we will add people who were not
able to purchase their frame systems from us.
Please sign up on the waiting list if you’re
interested. The fee will be $50 if not purchased
at Erica’s. Club dates are on page 54.
Embroidery Clubs—These are groups
where you explore more alternatives for the
embroidery aspect of your Viking, or Baby
Lock and try all kinds of things you might not
61 have tried on your own. We
have several groups
going now. Members will
tell you how much fun
they’re having and how
much they’re learning!
Membership is $30 for the six-month
session and club packs average around $15,
always including a few or several embroidery
designs for your collection. Projects feature
Judy Nowicki’s embroidery designs especially
for our Embroidery Club members! You get
information on project costs and a list of what
to bring before each meeting. There are
openings in some of the groups, so let us know
right away if you’re interested! (For our
owners) See page 54 for Club Dates.
Viking Digitizing Club—This club meets
the third Saturday of the month. Linda uses
prepared projects and step-by-step instructions.
We include Viking 3D, 4D and 5D formats. It is
not necessary to have a laptop to join us, but it
would be helpful. If members have taken the
Digitizing Introduction class or have tried
digitizing on their own with some success this
will be helpful but not absolutely necessary.
You will be doing mostly manual digitizing
over Linda’s drawings. You will receive a
paper handout as well as a CD with drawings
and a video of the class as your class pack.
Come join the fun! See page 54 for club dates.
If you’re one of our new owners and haven’t
had a chance to take a basic class yet,
please talk to someone in our sewing
department.

believe, but almost true; you can complete this
quilt top (minus the optional border) without
sewing a stitch (except for seaming your
background fabric) since there is no piecing
involved. You will sew, however, when you
quilt your quilt. This is an enjoyable project
and one you can do together with a child if you
choose to. Joan had a great talk with one of her
teenaged granddaughters while they laid it out
together. Joan will share some tricks and tips
she discovered that makes this easy project
even easier and faster to do. What fabrics will
you do yours in? The pattern includes two other
designs so there is no limit to the variations you
can make. Class Pack, the pattern, is $12 +
tax. (Machine required for second class,
quilting the quilt.) 2 weeks, starting Mon, Sep

you’re doing it with me (Erica) in the shop,
we’ll be meeting the first Saturday morning for
8 months, starting October 6th, and I’ll be
showing you how to use the clue for that
month. You’ll need only 2 or 3 hours each
month to finish the steps. We’ll have a reveal
party in September, 2013, to show off our

special see-through storage bins. (You’ll get a
bin free!) The classes that follow the workshop
will help you convert your cut scraps into fun,
useable table runners, quilts, and other things as
