As the only place in the world where two World Heritage areas are side by side, it is the natural place to meet. Meetings are assured of strong participation when they are held in Cairns & Great Barrier Reef. Many have more than doubled their expected delegate numbers thanks to the desirability of this naturally spectacular location. Is it any wonder? The Great Barrier Reef and the Wet Tropics rainforest are on our doorstep, the Outback is accessible within a day and authentic Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture is a part of everyday life in the tropics. This is the place where you can dive with turtles through colourful coral gardens, soar over the world’s oldest surviving tropical rainforest, discover indigenous rock art with an Aboriginal elder or dine on a secluded white sand cay in the middle of the Great Barrier Reef. With more than 600 tours departing daily, Cairns & Great Barrier Reef offers outstanding opportunities for delegates and their families to relax, explore and experience new adventures. Our environmental credentials are second to none with 17 per cent of the country’s ecoaccredited tourism products here in Cairns & Great Barrier Reef. Conducting business sustainably is simple with innovative solutions to minimise the carbon footprint of your event and exciting team-building activities such as tree planting or fundraising for scientific research designed to give back to the community. Unique venues are a speciality of Cairns & Great Barrier Reef where warm temperatures year round and a spectacular natural environment add an exotic tropical feel to business events. Dine under a rainforest canopy, interact with wildlife in between courses, network on the waterfront in a heritage-listed wharf shed, discover the fun of bush dancing at a cane cutters’ party on a farm or step back in time in a World War 2 fuel tank for a themed gala dinner. With two World Heritage areas side by side, the wow factor is already included in Cairns & Great Barrier Reef events. The region’s unique venues, tropical climate, professional support services and welcoming people will help meeting planners make even more of an impact. Rob Giason Chief Executive Officer Tourism Tropical North Queensland www.businesseventscairns.org.au Tropical North Queensland Cairns & Great Barrier Reef This really is the destination for serious business in a stunning location. Supplement written by Brad foster T here really is a different feel the minute you arrive at Cairns International Airport that helps set the destination apart. It’s not the fact that it’s pretty much a brand new airport (although that’s certainly nice), or the balmy weather (equally as nice); it’s something about the general feel of the place that visitors get immediately. Arriving in Cairns is hassle-free. A short walk into the terminal and you don’t have to wait long for your bags to arrive on the carousel. All around you there are smiling, happy holidaymakers. Even the staff working at the airport seem to be in a good mood. 2 micenet AUSTRALIA supplement You know right away what the weather’s like outside and, if it’s good, which it often is in Cairns, you’re in a good mood as soon as you leave your plane behind. And even if it’s not you’re probably still in a good mood because it’s just so damn nice and warm. That winter coat you were wearing when you boarded the plane in your home town will be a thing of the past in Tropical North Queensland, replaced with a t-shirt, thongs, and of an evening a light sweater when it’s really cold... like 22 degrees C. Little wonder that this place is such a hit with partner programs. Yes indeed, it’s a little known fact that Tropical North Queensland attracts more delegate partners than just about anywhere else. Such is the appeal of the destination. On the move The $200 million expansion and enhancement of the Cairns International Airport is now completed, and is as good an example as any of the destination’s efforts to attract a greater number of visitors, including the convention and incentive travel market. With the upgrade there is anticipation of increased flights, literally meaning more “bums on seats”, and potentially more group travel. Which is certainly good news for the region as a whole which really does have a great understanding of the business events segment. Stretching from Cairns in the south to Palm Cove and further north to Port Douglas, the Cairns & Great Barrier Reef region is tailor-made for business events of all shapes, sizes and styles. Cairns is serviced by the award-winning Cairns Convention Centre and plenty of three, four and five-star hotels, the majority of which are within walking distance of the centre and each other. Palm Cove is a sleepy little hamlet about 30 minutes from Cairns which has quickly secured an enviable international reputation for being a great place to relax and get away from it all. Its offerings for the business event segment are wide and varied, catering well for the small to medium sized market best. Port Douglas, another 30 minutes north, is the bigger sister of Palm Cove. Thanks to the Sheraton Mirage located here it has developed into one of Australia’s pre-eminent destinations for meetings and incentives, now offering such variety in the accommodation sector, and a host of new attractions tailormade for the group market. And surrounding these three very different centres is the beauty of the region – the rainforest and the reef – and of course the stunning weather that ranges from balmy in summer to mild in winter. Combine every element and you have a destination that screams of life, and for the meeting and incentive travel planner, an abundance of opportunities to do something very special indeed. A t last count venues in and around Cairns when combined can accommodate in excess of 7000 people. Coupled with the capacity at the Cairns Convention Centre and meetings up to and over the 3000 mark are highly possible. However, the city is best able to cater for the 2000 delegate or less market, with the majority of hoteliers equally as happy to service the under 500 group size. Bigger meetings work in Cairns because of the “walkability” of the city. The Cairns Convention Centre is within walking distance of the majority of four and five-star hotels in town which are, in turn, within walking distance of major excursion points, including the cruise terminal where boats leave for the reef each day, and a variety of areas that can be used for off-site event. This includes Fogarty Park, the large grassed area between the Shangri-La Hotel, the Hilton and the Pullman Reef Casino, and most recently the refurbished cruise ship terminal. A 10 minute bus ride can have delegates sipping cocktails at one of the more unusual venues in Cairns at the Tanks Arts Centre, dining out at the award-winning Tjapukai 4 micenet AUSTRALIA supplement Aboriginal Cultural Park, skirting above the rainforest on the Skyrail Rainforest Cableway, or cuddling a koala and feeding a croc at the Cairns Tropical Zoo. Further afield there are opportunities to head to Kuranda in the hinterland and return by train onboard the Kuranda Scenic Railway, dine and tour at the Rainforestation Nature Park, or take a spin in a bush bashing hummer at The Billabong. Stunning weather and ease-of-access to the majority of attractions is what makes Cairns such a winner for the groups market, and why it continues to impress first-timers and more experienced meetings practitioners. Coupled with its big-city opportunities a casino, nightclubs, pubs and bars, restaurants – all a stone’s throw from each other, Cairns should really be a first-choice destination for the business events sector. Centre of excellence Leading from the front is the Cairns Convention Centre which in July celebrated its 15th birthday. The anniversary coincides with a $6.4 million capital upgrade, helping to ensure the centre remains at the forefront of international conventions. During its 15 years of operation the centre has hosted hundreds of conventions, 13 National Basketball League seasons, exhibitions, concerts and banquets. Landmark events include: • Microsoft Teched Conference (1500 pax) • Amway Korea Leadership Seminar (4000 pax) • 5th Annual International Society for Stem Cell Research Scientific Meeting (1400 pax) • 5th World Sheep Congress (1350 pax) • Pacific Island Forum (500 pax) • Greenhouse 2011 A major highlight for the centre was the International Association of Congress Centre’s (AIPC) Apex Award for World’s Best Congress Centre in 2004. The award is an evaluation based on a comprehensive performance and customer satisfaction analysis covering topics including congress facilities, project management, catering and technology. Adding to the centre’s credentials in 2011 was the awarding of the AIPC Quality Standards Program “Gold Certification”, with the centre being one of only 13 venues from throughout the world to have successfully achieved this. stop press: Million dollar upgrade The Queensland Government has formally announced a $6.3m capital injection to the Cairns Convention Centre as part of major projects for the region. G overnment Services and Building Industry Minister Simon Finn and Member for Cairns Desley Boyle said the $6.3 million makeover will deliver major improvements to the award-winning convention centre. “The Cairns Convention Centre is a worldclass facility with a proven track record of attracting major conferences to Far North Queensland,” Mr Finn said. “The centre has a great international reputation, but we need to keep investing in its future.” “This $6.3 million upgrade will deliver a major kitchen upgrade as well as upgrades to the centre’s lighting, electrical and fire systems,” Ms Boyle added. Other key elements of the upgrade include: • New audio-visual & communication equipment to improve infrastructure for sophisticated presentations • Upgraded wifi to the latest standards • Upgrade of Hall 2 audio and digital signage • Upgrade of emergency and fire systems • Extension and upgrade of the Outdoor Plaza • General soft refurbishment of Hall 2 including paintings and new carpet • Upgrade of kitchen equipment • Additional environmental sustainable development features Cairns Convention Centre general manager Ross Steele said the funding will ensure the centre maintains its competitiveness nationally and internationally as a market leader, enabling the centre to continue to fulfil its potential as a world-class convention facility that contributes around $80m annually to the Cairns economy. Off−site options Tanks Arts Centre Camouflaged among the lush rainforest surrounds of the Cairns Botanic Gardens precinct (and just near to Whitfield House) are some incredible WWII naval oil storage tanks that work wonderfully well for special off-site events. As the operators say: “The singular charm of these heritage-listed buildings is the blank canvas they provide; with their tall, interior poles and oil-stained, bare concrete walls and floors, the opportunities for imaginative event theming is endless.” One event planner worked with a local production company to transport guests back in time, theming one tank with army props and paraphernalia, including an army jeep parked as a centrepiece amongst the diners. Local performers wore retro military uniforms and played big band songs, providing an unforgettable evening for the delegates. Y es, the palm trees are beautiful in Palm Cove. And yes, the beach is nice as well. But when you’re sitting in a restaurant along the main strip sipping a beer or a glass of wine it will be the melaleucas that grab you. Many of these native Australian trees are believed to be more than 500 years old, literally providing shade to Palm Cove visitors for all that time. Thankfully, their existence has been spared as the village has grown. Boardwalks in hotels and resorts have been carefully constructed to allow the trees to continue growing. Thank goodness this is somewhere people still respect what nature has created. Turn off the main highway and within five minutes you really do seem to be in another world that is unhurried, unworried, and well, just really, really nice. Palm Cove is dotted with some very highquality accommodation, meetings space that caters particularly well to the small to medium sized group, excellent restaurants serviced by an enviable list of high-quality chefs, and spas and wellness centres that should have you and your delegates floating home after a three, four or five night stay. No motor cars required here. Everything is within a short flat stroll from everything else, and everything is trouble free. If one restaurant is booked out, try the one next door. It probably offers food equally as sumptuous. And if you do want to get out and about then there is plenty right on your doorstep, like the Cairns Tropical Zoo or the Paradise Palms Resort & Country Club for those who enjoy their golf. New and improved To an outsider there doesn’t appear as if there can be much more development undertaken in Palm Cove, and that’s not to say that it’s over-developed. Everything seems to fit snugly together. What has changed in recent times is the management of a number of properties already there. This includes the Reef House which is now being managed by Rydges, and the Novotel Palm Cove Resort (previously Novotel Rockford Palm Cove). O ver dinner recently with Sheraton Mirage’s director of sales, Marian McLeod, it was exciting to learn that the Sheraton Mirage, with a new owner, could be undergoing a major refurbishment in the not-too-distant future. The property is an icon in Tropical North Queensland, and indeed Australia, playing host to meetings and incentives for the past two decades from companies near and far. But more than that, this place has helped Port Douglas become what it is today. When gold fever was at its peak in Tropical North Queensland in the 1870s the population of Port Douglas swelled to 12,000. By 1960 when the gold was well and truly gone township numbers dwindled to around 100. Not long after this tourism gave the destination a boost, with visitors from down south discovering the region and liking what they saw. The Port Douglas of today is a mix of brandname resort hotels, holiday apartments, bars, restaurants, a working marina, beaches, parkland, and golf courses, everything a person on vacation or a conference or incentive group could want. It is particularly well-suited for the meetings and incentives sector. Small enough to keep delegates in the one place, but large enough 20 micenet AUSTRALIA supplement Sheraton Mirage Port Douglas to offer interest for those who may have been there and done that all before. As well as some first-rate accommodation options, there are also some great activities that work incredibly well for the business events sector. Flat land in Port Douglas itself allows for the creation of fun Amazing Race style programs (all on bikes), and its close proximity to the reef means many reef experience operators are based here, including Quicksilver, cutting down significantly on transfer worries. Also located in Port Douglas is Great Barrier Reef Helicopters, the region’s premier helicopter company (they also have a base in Cairns), which offers a variety of experiences for the groups market. Reef tours, scenic flights, specially tailor-made programs, and transfers are all available. In the past GBR Helicopters has provided chartered services for companies including BMW, Honda and Nokia incentives. Their large fleet capabilities have enabled them to move up to 100 people to their desired destination efficiently, quickly, and above all spectacularly. Another company offering something a little out of the ordinary well suited to the groups market is Back Country Bliss Adventures, an eco-adventure guiding company that offers activities including sea kayaking, river drift snorkelling, mountain biking and bushwalking. Back Country Bliss Adventures also teams up with GBR Helicopters to combine an exhilarating flight with their activities. The company also offers corporate games, activities and team-building concepts. Visit www.backcountryblissadventures.com.au to learn more. Incentive focus Assisting in promotion of the region is the Port Douglas Business Tourism Advisory Group (Port Douglas Incentives) which recently launched its new branding and website. The new website has been redesigned in line with the new Tourism Port Douglas Daintree branding, creating a clean, fresh and easy to navigate website, making it simple for potential business events clients to research the sensational products and experiences available in the Port Douglas and Daintree region. Chairperson Natalie Johnson commented, “The redesign of the website and implementation of the new brand tag line “World Heritage, World Class” was done this year to begin a solid campaign to attract business events to the Port Douglas and Daintree region by showcasing to the industry the destination is one of the most special and distinctive in the Asia Pacific, both in terms of unique natural features, infrastructure, resources and personalities”. Port Douglas Incentives is a self funded, specialist advisory group of dedicated business tourism and events specialists with commercial interests and operations in the Douglas section of the Cairns Regional Council area. The group formed as a result of a collective determination to promote the Douglas region, ensuring Port Douglas and the Daintree continues to be at the forefront of being an aspirational conference and incentive travel destination. Port Douglas Incentives has a range of marketing initiatives in the pipeline this year, including advertising and viral campaigns, all focused on driving potential business events clients to the new website. , Great Location Great Rewards Meeting at Sheraton Mirage Port Douglas has never been more rewarding. Perched high above Oak Beach off the Captain Cook Highway past Palm Cove towards Port Douglas, this property is about as secluded as a resort can be. Little wonder then that this was the place where Silverchair’s Daniel Johns and Natalie Imbruglia tied the knot a few years back – away from the prying eyes of the paparazzi. The property is located on a private peninsula and boasts 83 deluxe timber bungalows on 145 acres of natural forest and two kilometres of absolute private beach frontage. This unique resort with advanced eco-tourism accreditation sits spectacularly on top of the headland providing breathtaking views of untouched coastline and the Coral Sea, and is the perfect setting for special incentives or small conference groups. The bungalows are built high on stilts and nestle in the forest canopy providing an unobtrusive relationship with the natural world. Thala has three areas for small meetings, and a fantastically rustic venue on the beach, Herbie’s Beach Shack, which is a great venue for special events for groups.
