Tim Vicky and Mike Denny Susie and Paul 3 The Big Tent BBQ Hosted by Suzie Saarinen and Eric Bergman Eric and Susie’s Big Tent BBQ was a fun party. A nice size crowd from the Norton Club was joined by members of the Antique Club and the BMAC. Along with the company came a mix of motorcycles. There were 9 Nortons parked up front in the Norton Parking Only spaces. In the less prestigious parking lot Triumph, BMW, Ducati, Puch, Honda, Harley Davidson and Suzuki were represented. The food was excellent, Eric had the smoker going and Bob Ohman manned the grill. There was a table full of sides and desserts. I doubt anyone left hungry or thirsty. As usual we all made the rounds and caught up. Tim Johnson was in town and stopped by. He’s teaching Spanish at a University in Illinois. Ron and Joan Pierce will be leaving for Florida by the end of the month. Mike Fields will be retiring in 2 weeks. Many of us are looking forward to summer adventures. Others are working on bike projects. Life in the Norton Club is pretty good. Yes, life is terribly unfair at times, but such platitudes don't make it any easier to accept bad things happening to good people. On June 20, for the second time, I got to accompany an eclectic group of about 24 motorcycle riders who gather yearly to honor the memory of three young people who died too soon. Three very talented young people I’d never met, but whose passing left Denver much the poorer, as I later learned. And, no, they weren’t riding motorcycles when they passed. It was the Annual RAD Motorcycle Ride. The acronym stands for Rick Kulwicki, 49; Andrea Einertson, 33, and Danny Einertson, 36, friends of my neighbor and fellow British motorcycle aficionado, Arnie Beckman. Motorcycles brought the group together for the day, but there are other common interests, including guitars and rock music. Arnie, by the way, fits my definition of good people. A third-generation motorhead with deep South Denver roots, he's been a tremendous help to me in getting a vintage Matchless motorcycle back on the road. That includes loading the ’57 G11 twin on his truck a few times to get it home or to a shop. An attorney, he is a man of many talents, and you couldn't ask for better company. The RAD riders aren’t a formal club with a catchy label or stylish emblem – rather, they're individualists with overlapping interests who gather to honor the memory of Rick, Andrea and Daniel. The RAD riders’ bikes included vintage Triumphs, a Honda CB750 café racer, 1965 Yamaha 305, Moto-Guzzi, several iterations of BMWs, Harleys, a super-rare MZ, crotch rockets, and metric cruisers. The Einertsons were killed June 23, 1997, after going back to Pennsylvania for a family gathering, Arnie told me. While there, they visited the Harley-Davidson museum in York, PA. The couple and Andrea's mother, Ann Marie Sullivan, 59 of Littleton, were driving to Newark International Airport in a rental car for the flight home. According to a press report, another car driven by John Goldschmidt, 48, who suffered a cardiac attack, came from the opposite direction, crossed the grassy median of Interstate 78 and slammed head-on into the Einertson vehicle. All were killed. Andrea was pregnant with the couple’s first child, a girl. Rick Kulwicki, a single dad, who died of arteriosclerosis on Feb. 15, 2011, was well-known on the Denver music scene as a guitarist for The Fluid, a grunge, garage-rock, punk-rock group that achieved some national recognition in the 1980s and ‘90s, disbanded and then reunited for a time in 2008. (Arnie learned of Rick's death when he arrived at the Kulwicki house for band practice, only to find paramedics on the scene.) Denver's rock music community was shocked by Rick's premature death. Arnie's affection for Rick can be seen in his comments to Denver Post music-scene scribe Ricardo Baca: “Everybody who he touched went away with a positive feeling," Arnie told Baca. "He made people feel good... Everybody who encountered him loved him. You hear that a lot when people pass away, but in Rick’s case, it’s not exaggeration.” Arnie and Danny Einertson rode motorcycles together, competing in the “open class, twins,” vintage motocross, which resembles the scrambles motorcycle events of yesteryear rather than modern motocross.. Danny rode a classic Norton 750cc P-11 twin, which was in pieces when he acquired it. Arnie, who helped him restore the bike, now owns that Norton. (Arnie rode it on the 2014 RAD Ride, but this year, he rode a modern Triumph.) Rick Kulwicki used to ride a gleaming black kick-start Harley-Davidson chopper, built on a 1949 hard-tail frame and powered by a “shovelhead” V-twin engine. It’s now owned by Rick’s long-time friend, Denver luthier and musician John Rumley, who rode it on the memorial ride. And music is the connection among many of these friends – Arnie, an attorney, also plays bass guitar in The Buckingham Squares, a Denver-area rock group. Andrea once worked in concert promotion, including a stint with famed Denver impresario Barry Fey and also had organized the Cherry Creek Arts Festival. Danny wasn't a musician but he was a master glassblower who made custom lab ware for the scientific community. (continued next page) 6 RAD Ride, (continues) “The tragedy was that they were both really nice people,” Arnie said. The couple had just bought a home near Holly and Evans and had been looking forward to the birth of their first child. In fact, the ride honoring the Einertsons originated at their funeral and had attracted 80 motorcycles. Rick’s death added a third name to the annual event. The Fluid, Rick’s old band, included guitarist Matt Bischoff, a gregarious guy whom I’d met at the First Thursday vintage motorcycle gatherings at Crash 45, the biker bar near 45 th and Washington. For the day, Matt rode a black Moto-Guzzi. This year’s ride began at the Einstein’s bagel shop at South Logan and East Alameda and wound its way down Santa Fe Drive for a stop in Sedalia and then another halt in Palmer Lake for a bite to eat, washed down with beer, before heading back to Denver. Richard, one of Rick’s twin sons, once again arrived in his black Ford Crown Vic. This year, twin brother Roman attended the after-the-ride party at the Denver home of Keven and April Soll. Hearing friends reminisce about adventures and good times with the three whom they loved so deeply once again underscored how profound was their loss. And, as I did last year, I rode home feeling happy and sad -- happy to learn about Rick, Andrea and Danny, but sad that I never met them. A Norton V-Twin ???? Check this bike out !! This V-twin Norton is a home built bike a friend of Peter Allen’s built in England for a lark. His name is Tony Harris, he used to own BTH magnetos . He also did the same with an Ariel. I did this last summer and travelled from north to south. Those of you who know me know that I spend summers riding around the country sport touring. Well, last summer I found a new favorite road. It’s the Skyline Drive/Blue Ridge Parkway. There are over five hundred and fifty uninterrupted miles of curvy road. There was not one stop sign or traffic signal. There are no commercial enterprises along the road, or the traffic that goes along with them, only a dozen or so visitor centers. Gas, food and hotels are available by riding into a town near the parkway. There are abundant pull-offs and overlooks for beautiful views and the necessary butt breaks. The entire journey is well paved, relatively easy to ride curvy road with some twisties even the peg scrapers would like. The few straightaways don’t last any longer than a mile or so, just enough to catch your breath. Skyline Drive begins in Virginia and goes for 100 miles through the Shenandoah National Park. It then changes to the Blue Ridge Parkway and 450 miles later ends up east of Smokey Mountain National Park in North Carolina. Wow, what a fun ride. I wore myself out having too much fun. It is definitely my new favorite road. Thermarest LuxuryLite UltraLite Cot Going to the Rally? This cot looks like it would be a nice addition to your camping gear. It seems a lot more comfortable than sleeping on the ground. So when they circumsized him a team of surgeons made him new eyelids with his own skin. The lad can see pretty good except he is a "little cockeyed". Lucas finally made something electrical that doesn't suck, a vacuum cleaner.
