It turns out to be a great bike, and I’ve ridden it over 25,000 miles including a trip to British Columbia with Richard Florence and to/from the east coast solo. I love the bike, and though it certainly performs adequately for my stately needs, these old Guzzi engines turn a flywheel about the size and weight of a manhole cover. Hence throttle response is languid, engine braking is non-existent and shifting gears is a test of patience. Before During project I ran into Dave and Robin Webster at the INOA National in Ashland a couple years back, and both sang the praises of a lightened flywheel in Robin's LeMans . In subsequent research I learned that this is a popular performance mod for old Guzzi round fin engines, and at the Four Corners Rendezvouslater that year I had a chance to ride a Guzzi cafe racer with a lightened flywheel. I was sold. Doing a bit of research I found a typical lightening scheme and brought a spare Guzzi flywheel and ring gear to Randy Albright, along with sketches and dimensions of the desired work. Randy carved the two parts according to my plan and finished the work just in time for me to pick them up the day of the Norton Colorado Winter Banquet. The stock flywheel & ring gear weigh just over 15 lbs. and the modified parts add up to just 11 lbs. So Randy’s work reduced the mass by a bit over 25%, not extreme but significant. And most of the mass removed was out near the circumference of the two disks, also significant. After Returning home I couldn’t wait to install the lightened parts, and thus motivated it did not take me long to pull down the CX100 drivetrain and make the switch. Before long I had the modified parts installed and the bike back together. With great anticipation I finished assembling the bike, poured some petrol into the tank and fired it up. Warmed up, I toed it down into first, pointed it down the road and ran it up through the gears. A short ride around the neighborhood told the story: the improved throttle response gave a seat of the pants impression of a major horsepower increase. Without having to turn that heavy manhole cover, there was more motivation available at the rear wheel. This engine always has pulled like a mule through the midrange, but now it feels less casual and more enthusiastic about doing so. And yes, it now has engine braking in its repertoire and shifting gears is a smoother process. The only potential downsides I was looking for were a more erratic idle and the need for a bit more clutch slipping on launch. Neither of these issues has arisen. The engine idles happily, the bike launches effortlessly and is a joy to ride. Two arthritic thumbs up! Bob’s next project Enjoying the finished project 6 News from Dave Campbell: Hey Norton Colorado, Well the Army Corps of Engineers position is very rewarding work. I like it up here despite Eugene's hobo dirt ball problem, it is crazy throughout the northwest-they need to put a bunch in jail to keep my old comrades busy! It was already pretty in February and the forests are awesome up here. Some nice roads making me wish I had my Commando. I will not of course stay in the club (but probably will check the newsletter from time to time). I sure enjoyed my time with the club. A bunch of nice folks with esoteric knowledge in a variety of areas. Always a good conversation to be had, especially over a pint! I hope to perhaps see some of you again and folks are free to contact me, I will always have a dry refuge for a weary Norton traveler. Take it easy, Dave 720-579-3625 A couple of local businesses worth knowing. Both these services are hard to find. From Jim Fisher The first is Tom at Cycle Works West. He does frame straightening and reinforcement. He has some very comprehensive equipment and knows what he is doing. A lot of us do restorations but never check the frames. It is not that expensive and afterwards your bike will track correctly. His number is 720 232-0998 or [email protected] or www.cycleworksUSA.net . The other is Dan at Boulder Hydraulic Hose. His phone is 303 444-3220. He can do any DOT approved hoses reasonably and sometimes while you wait. Kind of a crusty son of a bitch but great service. Now we share the road with an alligator.” On second thought, The alligator can't be any worse than some drivers we see on the road every day. "What about trying Viagra? "asked the doctor. "Not a chance" she replied. "He won't even take an aspirin". "Not a problem" said the doctor. "Give him an Irish Viagra". "What is Irish Viagra?" she asked. "It's Viagra dissolved in his morning cup of coffee. He won't even taste it. Let me know how it goes" he said. She called the doctor the next day. "How did it go?" he asked. "Oh faith, bejaysus and begorrah, doctor, it was horrid. Just terrible, I tell ya !!." "I'm beside meself!" "Really? What in the world happened?" "Well, I did as you advised. The Viagra in his morning coffee took effect right almost immediately. He jumped straight up, with a smile on his face, a twinkle in his eye and his pants a-bulging. Fiercely, with one swoop of his arm, he sent the cups and saucers flying across the room, then he ripped me clothes to tatters and passionately took me then and there on top of the table." "Twas a nightmare, I tell ya, an absolute nightmare." Why so terrible?" asked the doctor. "Wasn't the sex good?" "Freakin jaysus, it was the best sex I've had in me last 25 years, but sure as I'm sittin here, doctor, I'll never be able to show me face in Starbucks again." 9 2016 Schedule of Events February 6 (Saturday) Winter Banquet, Tony P's Bar & Pizzaria, 777 E. 17th St., Denver, 5 PM.
