It is great to be back at Decatur Highway! It is always enjoyable to get away for a few days, and an extra bonus, to spend time with family, but to reunite with our spiritual family here at Decatur Highway is truly a joy. Our attendance over the last couple of weeks has shown that there were many of us who took the opportunity of the holidays to visit family and friends. Last week’s attendance, however, showed that slowly we were all settling back in to our regular routine. I look forward to a great 2012 with the church here at Decatur Highway! I want to say a special “Thank You” to Jared for preaching last Sunday. I heard so many good comments on his lesson Sunday morning. We managed to roll in right before services on Sunday night, so I enjoyed hearing his lesson “Are You Lukewarm?” in person. FOR TRANSPORTATION TO SERVICES, CALL: J.T. Heron (674-3475) ~ ~ ~ WEDNESDAY ~ SUNDAY Mark Rhodes taught the auditorium class, and previewed his new study for the fellowship hall on Sunday mornings — Hebrews. Mark always does an outstanding job. He also gave us a challenging devotional message on Wednesday evening. The Lord willing, next Sunday, we will be installing our new deacons at Decatur Highway. The list of men you have selected is an impressive list. This will be a special day. We look forward to seeing the work these men will accomplish for the Lord with our help. Don’t forget to mark your calendars for January 29. Brother Jay Lockhart from Whitehouse, Texas will be with us on that Sunday. He will be speaking on Fortifying Our Fellowship. Brother Lockhart is one of the great Bible students and gifted preachers of our day. I am looking forward to having him here, and I hope you are too. Certificates will be prepared & presented very soon. This year, the Bible reading plan will cover all sixty-six books, but not in order. Each day, you will read from the Old, New, Psalms & Proverbs. Bookmarks containing the schedule for the month will be on the foyer table, prior to the start of each new month. Set your goal now for reading the Bible everyday in 2012. THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK “He that is full of himself is empty” JUST A TINY LITTLE PIMPLE Back in September 2011, I had just a tiny little pimple on the middle finger of my left hand. No big deal! I popped it, cleaned it and put a bandaid on it. No big dead! So, I thought. A few days later, I found myself in the hospital with a severe staph infection. What I thought was no big deal had my left hand so swollen I couldn’t make a fist or move my fingers. My doctor even called in a hand surgeon thinking they would have to cut open my hand to drain the infection. They decided to first try a very strong IV antibiotic for two days. With the proper care, the staph infection began to clear up. What I thought was no big deal, could have cost me the use of my left hand. When we think about it, sin is just like that tiny little pimple. At first, it is no big deal! Just a small white lie, just one angry word, just one lustful look, just one missed worship service, just one drink, just one missed opportunity to tell someone about Christ, just one dirty joke, just one use of God’s name in vain which can be heard by others, just one gossip - “I heard so and so.” JUST ONE, whether big or tiny - no big deal! We begin to think these choices are no big deal. We think we can handle. But, if we aren’t careful, sin can get out of control and we find ourselves in a hopeless situation. Sin is the transgression of God’s law, as stated in 1 John 3:4. Also, in James 1:15, “then when lust hath conceived, it brings forth sin, and sin when it is finished bringeth forth death.” We may believe that sin is no big deal, especially those we call “little sins,” until we realize what sin does to our souls. Just like that tiny pimple could have robbed me of the use of my left hand, sin that appears to be no big deal at first, can rob us of our hope for eternal life. As I told you, the IV antibiotic gave me back the use of my left hand, the same can apply when we search our souls and repent from sinful ways, we will be on the pathway toward eternal life with Christ. Acts 8:22, repent and pray - God’s eternal care for man’s sins. ~ Rolland Rutkowski QUESTIONS&ANSWERS 1. 2. 3. It is an intense weekend of in-depth and practical evangelism training. Classes will equip students with skills to share the Good News with their friends, as well as, increase their knowledge of mission works at home and abroad. Elective classes will give young people the opportunity to learn about areas of evangelism most pertinent to their lives. EU 2012 will feature a combination of class styles. During the morning session, everyone will participate in one of four core curriculum classes. During the afternoon sessions, students will be able to choose two elective classes.
