Ponies will be asked to enter the arena clockwise at the walk or trot, at the judge's discretion. Once lined up, each pony will be asked one at a time to walk out of line towards the judge, walk clockwise around the triangle, trot around the triangle and then stand for conformation evaluation. Ponies are asked to walk and trot clockwise so the handler does not obscure the judge's view. While we encourage judge's to use the Sport Horse/Sport Pony triangle pattern for judging, a judge may opt to have ponies walk out of line and trot around the arena in lieu of the triangle pattern. The handler should be able to run with enough speed to match the natural stride of the pony. The goal of the handler is to present the pony to its best advantage - there are no penalties for breaking gait, not staying on the triangle, stopping or not stopping at the end of each side. First and second place winners from classes SP 1, 2, 3 & 4 are eligible to come back for the Grand Championship class. The Grand Championship will be awarded to one of the ponies which has placed first in a qualifying class. After the Grand Champion has been decided, the pony which has placed second in the qualifying class to the pony awarded the Grand Championship shall compete with the remaining first place winners for the Reserve Grand Championship. SP 5 - Sport Pony Dressage Suitability 3 & Over Open to junior and senior riders, 6 years of age and up, and all ponies 12.0 HH to 14.2 HH. Stallions to be ridden by senior riders only. This is a non-EC miscellaneous class. The Stars of the West Sport Pony Challenge Cup is a series of in-hand and under saddle sport pony suitability classes at qualifying shows throughout Western Canada. The top three placings at each show automatically qualify for the Finals. Once a pony has qualified for the Finals, they are still eligible to compete at the remainder of the qualifying shows throughout that year and earn points for Year-End Awards. The series features a perpetual trophy cup sponsored by Pferde Traum Farm of Breton, Alberta. No membership is required and unregistered ponies are welcome to enter. The "Sport Pony" is a pony in the general range of 13.2-14.2 hh that is noble and correct, with suspension, impulsion and elastic movement - well suited for dressage, hunters, show jumping, eventing or driving because of its temperament, character and rideability. It is a riding and competition pony for young riders and small adults and an elegant driving pony.
