Dear Athletes,
Welcome to the Delaware Diamondman Triathlon!!
This event is the seventh event of the 2008 Greater Atlantic
Multisport Series (GAMS) and the Greater Atlantic Club Challenge
(GACC). Over $7,500 worth of prizes and cash will be given away
to lucky GAMS and GACC participants and winners!!!
UPDATED: The bike for the half iron has been modified this year
due to unexpected bridge construction at Augustine Beach. In
order to maintain the HALF bike distance, there will be three
turnaround points on the bike course. The 1st and 3rd will be at
the Augustine Beach area and the 2nd will be on Cox Neck Road
near Southern Elementary School. Please see course description
and map on pages 6 & 7, respectively.
For those of you who are new to multisport events and chip timing,
we strongly encourage you to attend the First Timers Meeting
scheduled for 3:00pm on Saturday, September 6th at the race
location. This will be your opportunity to learn about the race
course, review the contents of your race packet and have all of your
questions concerning the race answered.
Stay fit, good luck, and we’ll see you on race weekend!!

Optional Bike Safety Inspection
You are responsible for the safety of your bike. Be sure that you do not have any loose parts, damaged
rims, broken spokes, or dry rotted tires. Also be sure that your handle bars have bar end plugs to
ensure safety for yourself and others as they create a hazard in the event of a crash.
Should you have any problems with your bike or your helmet, please take it to your local bike shop
prior to the race for any necessary repairs.
First Timers
Whether this is your first multisport event or first Piranha-Sports
event, you will find the First
Timer Meeting helpful in answer
your questions about everything
from course logistics, chip timing,
race number, etc.
If you can’t make the First Timers
Meeting, visit the NEWS section
of the Piranha Sports website and
click on the article entitle “First
Timers Information”. This article
contains most of the information
that will be covered at the First
Timers Meeting.
For your convenience, the sponsoring bike shop will be available to assist
with any maintenance you may require. There will be limited mechanical
assistance available during the race and there will be heavy presence of
various motorcycle clubs motorcyclists. They will not be providing
mechanical assistance but rather helping to patrol the bike course in
conjunction with local police.
Should you have a breakdown during the race, a “draggin’ wagon” will be
roaming the course to furnish you and your bike with a ride back to the
race site. Upon being picked up, you will be considered a DNF (Did Not
Finish) and will need to hand in your timing chip.
Event management will NOT be held responsible for any
problems that may occur with your bike on race day. It is your
responsibility to maintain your bike in good working order for
your safety and the safety of the athletes around you.
At any time, if event management, it’s staff, or
volunteers deem that your bike is unsafe, you
will be asked to rectify the situation before being
allowed to enter the transition area and race.
Transition Area Rules
Piranha Sports makes every effort to maintain a secure transition area: In order to do
this, we have the following policies that must be followed by all participants and their
family members and friends.
Check-in: The only people allowed in the transition area at any time will be race participants,
Piranha Sports staff members and race officials. You will need your assigned wrist band on before
access to transition will be allowed. There is one entrance to the transition area prior to the race –
you must use this entrance only. Anyone who attempts to climb over or under the transition area
fencing will be reported to a race official resulting in a penalty or disqualification. There is a clearly
marked MOAT area around the transition area – the only people allowed in this area are Piranha
Sports staff members and security personnel – no exceptions. Bike warm-ups must take place
prior to transition area check-in. Once your bike is in transition, it cannot leave until the bike
portion of the race.
Check out: After you finish the race, there will be one exit for people and bikes. In order to
check your bike out, you must have your bike number on your bike and your wrist band on. If you
are missing either of these, we will need to record information on you and your bike and it will
delay your exit from transition.
Other: Please remember that once you finish the race, there may still be other participants
transitioning. Please keep the aisles of transition and the bike in/run out areas clear so that they
can continue the race without impediment.

Rules of the Road
Most triathletes come to races with only a rudimentary understanding of the rules of the sport. Indeed, few have
ever read through the Competitive Rules (http://www.usatriathlon.org/Rules_Officials/rules.htm) in its entirety.
In order to minimize misunderstandings on race day, I hope you will take the time to read the following summary of
Position Violations, which you probably know as the drafting rules.
I have reduced the Position Rules to the following concepts, which everyone can remember:
•
•
•
•
•
Ride on the right side of your lane, as far right as possible.
Keep three bike lengths between you and the cyclist in front of you.
Pass on the left of the cyclist in front, never on the right.
Complete your pass within 15 seconds.
If passed, you must drop completely out of the zone (back at least 3 bike lengths), to the rear,
before attempting to re-pass.
Remember you are racing in a USA Triathlon sanctioned event and there are trained referees on the course to
ensure fairness in the competition. There will be NO WARNINGS if you commit a foul during competition. Triathlon
is an individual event and you must take personal responsibility to understand the rules and avoid penalties. At the
end of the race all citations by the officials are reviewed by the Head Referee who then decides if a penalty should
be assessed. A copy of the penalties will be posted next to the preliminary results. If you feel you were unfairly
penalized, please see the race director. However, the Head Referee’s ruling is final in the case of Position
Violations and there are no protests or appeals of Position penalties. Officials commonly cite the
following violations:
Illegal Position or Blocking – riding on the left side of the lane without passing.
Illegal Pass – passing on the right.
Overtaken - failing to drop back three bike lengths after being passed and before re-passing.
Drafting – following a leading cyclist closer than three bike lengths and failing to pass within
15 seconds.
Though Position Violations carry a time penalty for each occurrence, if you are cited for three violations, you will
be disqualified.
Always have your chinstrap securely fastened! The helmet and chinstrap rule apply before, during, and after the
event. The chinstrap rule is the easiest to follow, but some folks always seem to forget – that’s a DQ!
Remember to treat other athletes, volunteers, and officials with courtesy and consideration. failure to do so is
called Unsportsmanlike Conduct and you will be disqualified.
All that being said, I hope you have a great race, lots of fun, and achieve all your goals.

Hydration
Dehydration is the main medical issue we have at any event whether it
is a hot and humid or a cool and crisp day. Please be sure to drink
plenty of fluids before the race and during the race. Your pee should
be clear!!! At all Piranha Sports events, we will have a self-serve water
table available for you to fill your water bottles before the race and there will be water
stations approximately every mile on the run. In the longer races, we will also have a bottle
exchange available on the bike course. When you come over the finish line, in addition to
removing your timing chip, we will also do a quick assessment of your general health and will
grab one of the finish line EMTs/Paramedics if we feel you need medical assistance.

Bring your cow bells, noise makers, posters, banners, and other items to cheer on your favorite
athlete. Please keep in mind that spectators are not allowed to provide any outside assistance
to the athletes. Outside assistance can result in penalties and possible disqualification. Outside
assistance can include but is not limited to: transition area assistance, running or riding along
with the athlete (pacing), handing off water bottles, etc. The Piranha Sports staff and volunteers
will provide assistance as needed and allowed. As well, there will be no time during the event
when spectators will be allowed in the secure transition area. If your athlete forgot an item for
the transition area, please ask a Piranha Sports Staff member or volunteer to assist you in
getting that item to the athlete.
Spectator Control
The Piranha Sports Staff and volunteers have your athlete’s safety and security as their primary
responsibility. Therefore, there may be times during the course of the event that we will need
to provide directions to spectators if we feel that the athletes do not have a clear and
unobstructed path. Please pay close attention to these directions/instructions so that we are
able to maintain the safety of every athlete.
Kids and Dogs
The Piranha Sports Staff loves having kids and dogs at the events. The kids are our future and
the dogs are just great. If you do bring your children and/or pets, please keep a close eye on
them. Do not allow them to venture onto any of the roadways particularly near the mount/
dismount area. As well, if your children bring bikes, please ensure that they are wearing helmets
at all times. During the event, bring your kids by the Kid’s Craft area to decorate a Sombrero
which they can then wear. Supplies limited so stop by early!!
