Lightning
Thief
FRI OCT 21 / 7:00pm
Adapted by the bestselling young adult
book by Rick Riordan. Percy Jackson is
about to be kicked out of boarding school...
again. And that’s the least of his troubles.
Lately, mythological monsters and the gods
of Mount Olympus seem to be walking
straight out of the pages of Percy’s Greek
mythology textbook and into his life. And
worse, he’s angered a few of them. Zeus’s
master lightning bolt has been stolen and
Percy is the prime suspect.
Now Percy has ten days to find and return
Zeus’s stolen property and bring peace to a
warring Mount Olympus. But to succeed on
his quest, Percy will have to do more than
catch the true thief: he must come to terms
with the father who abandoned him; solve
the riddle of the Oracle, which warns him of
betrayal by a friend; and unravel a treachery
more powerful than the gods themselves.

PICTURE
WED NOV 2 / 7:30pm
Out Innerspace Dance Theatre is devoted to creating exciting and integral contemporary dance works.
Determined to be innovative yet accessible, they push beyond traditional aesthetics and forms
with unreserved ingenuity. Through research and experimentation, Out Innerspace celebrates the
importance of challenging the preconceptions of what can be expected, experienced and expounded
in contemporary dance.
Major Motion Picture explores timely themes of surveillance, otherness, propaganda and belief
through eccentric and lawless characters. A hybrid performance language includes infrared
technology and an on-stage surveillance system alongside Out Innerspace’s trailblazing movement
invention. 7 dancers fight for the theatre, losing and gaining the grounds for their power and identity.
A mysterious third party is present in every conflict, teaching us how to desire, and leading us into
patterns. Living in the wings, The Others hack into the theatre with wild attempts to steal the show
and regain the stage as their own. With influences ranging from Charlie Chaplin to Die Antwoord,
Orson Welles to Slavoj Zizek, the music of Bernard Herrmann meets urban underground and an
original composition by Belgian producer Tristan Vloeberghs.

THU NOV 3 / 7:30pm
Tokyo Police Club have recently released their first
batch of new music since the enterprising and vaulting
2014 LP Forcefield. Now ten years on from their 2006
debut EP, the Toronto four-piece are looking back
to the energy and spirit of that formative era while
keeping an eye on the future. And with the two-part
and self-released Melon Collie and the Infinite Radness
EP’s being let loose on both ends of 2016, lead singer/
bass player and principal songwriter Dave Monks,
drummer Greg Alsop, keyboardist/guitarist Graham
Wright, and guitarist Josh Hook have harnessed that
primal and instinctual joy to make Tokyo Police Club’s
tightest, brightest, and certainly raddest batch of
songs to date.

THU NOV 10 / 7:30pm
For Juno award winning jazz singer Emilie-Claire
Barlow, there never was a Plan B. No day jobs
or fallback plans in case music didn’t work out.
“I’ve always been a singer,” she said. “I just
knew that’s what I was, who I was and what I
was always going to do.” It has been so much
in her blood from the start that the Toronto born
jazz vocalist and arranger remembers that she
learned to read music around the same time
she learned to read words. “It was part of our
language,” Barlow said, remembering childhood
trips to recording studios with her parents,
drummer Brian Barlow and singer Judy Tate.

MACEO
PARKER
WED DEC 7 / 7:30pm
While most sax players have followed in the footsteps of jazz legends like Charlie Parker
and John Coltrane, Maceo Parker has consistently marched to a different tune. Since his
earliest days, he has gravitated to the more rhythmic and soulful end of the spectrum,
following figures like Louis Jordan, Ray Charles and James Brown – all of whom were
innovators, each pushing their respective sound and style to the point of becoming
something entirely new. It was Parker’s recurring stints in Brown’s band, in fact, that not
only produced some of the most enduring entries in the vast canon of American soul
music, but also sowed the seeds of the funk revolution of the 1970s. In hindsight, Maceo
Parker has been as innovative as the people whom he cites as his own influences.

SAT FEB 4 / 7:30pm
Los Lobos were already East L.A.-neighbourhood legends, Sunset Strip
regulars and a Grammy award-winning band by the time they recorded
their major label debut “How Will The Wolf Survive?” in 1984.
Although the album’s name and title song were
inspired by a National Geographic article about
real life wolves in the wild, the band – David
Hidalgo, Louie Perez, Cesar Rosas, Conrad
Lozano and Steve Berlin – saw parallels with
their struggle to gain mainstream rock success
while maintaining their Mexican roots. Three
decades, two more Grammys, a worldwide smash
single (“La Bamba”) and thousands of rollicking
performances across the globe later, Los Lobos
is surviving quite well – and still jamming with
the same raw intensity as they had when they
began in that garage in 1973. The band chronicles
a key moment of their expansive journey on

Infinity is an elegy to time, and what is transmitted
through time, by leading Canadian playwright
Hannah Moscovitch. It is a project commissioned
and developed by Volcano, and being premiered in
co-production with Tarragon Theatre.
In the play, a girl-in-turmoil named Sarah-Jean
Greene is researching her emotional self. SarahJean is a mathematician. Her father was a theoretical
physicist and her mother a violinist. Sarah-Jean
takes a scientific approach to all the complex
emotions she is presented with – in an attempt to
discover what might constitute her future.

Infinity is a play infused with theoretical physics,
classical music, the seeming impossibility of
love, and the idea that what time offers us is
more than we realize. It has been crafted with
close input from world-renowned physicist Lee
Smolin and internationally-acclaimed composer
Njo Kong Kie.
The result is a surprising, shocking, very funny
and we hope, revelatory new play about love,
sex and math…

continues. “But where things got really exciting for

the mines of South Africa, where black workers
were taken by rail to work far away from their

Monkeyjunk THU FEB 23 / 7:30pm
the harpoonist &
the axe murderer
The 2008 birth of the Ottawa-based band MonkeyJunk came along just when music fans needed them
the most. They brought an accessible and refreshing blend of swamp-rock roots and blues to the table
and haven’t looked back.
Straight out of the gate, MonkeyJunk quickly became one of the most popular new bands on the scene,
performing at festivals and packed venues across the country, amassing a large audience of devoted
fans, affectionately called “MonkeyJunkies.”
As one of Canada’s heaviest bands since Big Sugar, their music is passionate and edgy with unfettered
delivery. MonkeyJunk’s fourth release for Stony Plain Records, Moon Turn Red, is sure to further
cement the band’s popularity.
In reality, Shawn ‘The Harpoonist’ Hall and Matthew ‘The Axe Murderer’ Rogers evoke much more
than just grisly nautical imagery. Armed with an arsenal of harmonicas, a mess of foot percussion and
a road-worn Telecaster, the duo kick out raw and primal blues in the tradition of a decades-deep blues
style while infusing the genre with a jolt of renewed energy.
Shawn Hall provides the rousing, rugged vocals and blues
harmonica, while Matthew Rogers rips on the guitar and
pounds the skins with his feet. Their music is unapologetic.
It slaps you in the face and makes you sweat like it’s a
sticky, summer night. It’s the blues played they were meant
to be played.
