Percy Jackson is about to be kicked out of boarding school... again. And that’s the least of his troubles. Lately, mythological monsters and the gods of Mount Olympus seem to be walking straight out of the pages of Percy’s Greek mythology textbook and into his life. And worse, he’s angered a few of them. Zeus’s master lightning bolt has been stolen and Percy is the prime suspect. Now Percy has ten days to find and return Zeus’s stolen property and bring peace to a warring Mount Olympus. But to succeed on his quest, Percy will have to do more than catch the true thief: he must come to terms with the father who abandoned him; solve the riddle of the Oracle, which warns him of betrayal by a friend; and unravel a treachery more powerful than the gods themselves. Since his earliest days, he has gravitated to the more rhythmic and soulful end of the spectrum, following figures like Louis Jordan, Ray Charles and James Brown – all of whom were innovators, each pushing their respective sound and style to the point of becoming something entirely new. It was Parker’s recurring stints in Brown’s band, in fact, that not only produced some of the most enduring entries in the vast canon of American soul music, but also sowed the seeds of the funk revolution of the 1970s. In hindsight, Maceo Parker has been as innovative as the people whom he cites as his own influences. THERE’S SOMETHING KIN G LY YET Casu a l a b o u t M ac eo . Henry & Bucket are best pals, although sometimes you wouldn’t think so! Like all good friends they have their ups and downs, their battles and reconciliations, their shared adventures and, at times, their need for their own space. But as long as these two friends are together, transforming their rusty, dusty, battered and bockety world into a place of wonder, their adventures can take them anywhere! A stand-out piece of children’s theatre. Through Henry & Bucket’s relationship we can examine what friendship is, what happens if it goes wrong and how you fix it. Irish theatre magazine Poetic, humourous and rich in visual antics, this play explores friendship through a day in the life of two friends who have been likened to a modern-day Laurel and Hardy. Gary Smith, The Spectator Dance Underwriter 2016-17 season 31 los Lobos SAT FEB 4 / 7:30pm Los Lobos were already East L.A.-neighbourhood legends, Sunset Strip regulars and a Grammy award-winning band by the time they recorded their major label debut “How Will The Wolf Survive?” in 1984. Although the album’s name and title song were inspired by a National Geographic article about real life wolves in the wild, the band – David Hidalgo, Louie Perez, Cesar Rosas, Conrad Lozano and Steve Berlin – saw parallels with their struggle to gain mainstream rock success while maintaining their Mexican roots. Three decades, two more Grammys, a worldwide smash single (“La Bamba”) and thousands of rollicking performances across the globe later, Los Lobos is surviving quite well – and still jamming with the same raw intensity as they had when they began in that garage in 1973. The band chronicles a key moment of their expansive journey on Disconnected In New York City, a dynamic live album that marks the band’s 40th anniversary. 32 The Grand theatre presents …that unmistakable voice – a rare blend of soulful and gorgeous. In addition, they have toured a countless number of times throughout Canada, the United States, Europe and Australia. Much of the band’s success can be attributed to their phenomenal stage presence and impeccable artistry and musicianship with a wide variety of instruments and sound textures. 2015 marked the 20th anniversary of The Edges of Twilight, a monumental and fan favorite album. The album, which reached double platinum status, was re-released in both deluxe remastered CD and LP. 34 The Grand theatre presents In 2014, the band released its eighth album, The Ocean at the End. The album comes ten years after their previous album. On the writing process, Jeff Martin declares: “It’s a rock n’ roll record. We started the writing process in Australia in Byron Bay, and songs like ‘Brazil’ and the ‘Cass Corridor,’ ‘Submission’ and ‘The Water’s On Fire’ came out of that session,” he continues. “But where things got really exciting for us was when we jammed in Windsor: songs like ‘The 11th Hour’ and ‘The Line Of Control’ came out and it was really rock n’ roll. We were having fun and not over-thinking it anymore. What do you guys want to do? “Rock! It was Nelson Mandela who designated Ladysmith Black Mambazo “South Africa’s Cultural Ambassadors to the world.” The group sings from a traditional music called isicathamiya (is-cot-a-ME-Ya), which developed in the mines of South Africa, where black workers were taken by rail to work far away from their Global Beat Underwriter homes and their families. Poorly housed and paid worse, the mine workers would entertain themselves after a six-day week by singing songs into the wee hours on Sunday morning. When the miners returned to the homelands, this musical tradition returned with them. Ladysmith Black Mambazo carries a message of peace, love and harmony as they travel the world year after year. They bring this message, in song and dance, to every performance. 2016-17 season 35 Monkeyjunk THU FEB 23 / 7:30pm the harpoonist & the axe murderer The 2008 birth of the Ottawa-based band MonkeyJunk came along just when music fans needed them the most. They brought an accessible and refreshing blend of swamp-rock roots and blues to the table and haven’t looked back. Straight out of the gate, MonkeyJunk quickly became one of the most popular new bands on the scene, performing at festivals and packed venues across the country, amassing a large audience of devoted fans, affectionately called “MonkeyJunkies.” As one of Canada’s heaviest bands since Big Sugar, their music is passionate and edgy with unfettered delivery. MonkeyJunk’s fourth release for Stony Plain Records, Moon Turn Red, is sure to further cement the band’s popularity. In reality, Shawn ‘The Harpoonist’ Hall and Matthew ‘The Axe Murderer’ Rogers evoke much more than just grisly nautical imagery. Armed with an arsenal of harmonicas, a mess of foot percussion and a road-worn Telecaster, the duo kick out raw and primal blues in the tradition of a decades-deep blues style while infusing the genre with a jolt of renewed energy. Shawn Hall provides the rousing, rugged vocals and blues harmonica, while Matthew Rogers rips on the guitar and pounds the skins with his feet. Their music is unapologetic. It slaps you in the face and makes you sweat like it’s a sticky, summer night. It’s the blues played they were meant to be played. 36 The Grand theatre presents t he S ultan s o f s wam p r &B. william shatner Blues Underwriter wed mar 1 / 7:30pm The 32-member dance company is the only professional folk dance company in Brazil and was formed in the city of Salvador in the northern State of Bahia.
