MESSAGES
Arts Without Borders Festival Society was deeply honoured when our bid to host
the 2007 Lieutenant Governor of Alberta Arts Awards Gala was accepted by the
Lieutenant Governor of Alberta Arts Awards Foundation. This gala gives our
community the opportunity to showcase the diverse talents of arts and culture
groups in our region as well as show off the related facilities that we enjoy. Our
5-day festival will feature numerous displays and performances with the
highlight being the Arts Awards Gala on Saturday, May 26, when three Alberta
nominees will be recognized for excellence in their field.
On behalf of the Organizing Committee and a host of volunteers, we welcome
you to our celebration as we present the “Arts Without Borders Festival”, the first
of which will become an annual event.
Sincerely,
Vic Juba, Chair
The Arts Without Borders Festival stimulates an environment that promotes Arts
for everyone, everyday, and everywhere!
Our Festival articulates the individual and public value of the Arts, and engenders
public ownership of this value, thus enhancing the quality of life in the
Lloydminster region. Stories written and told with passion and wit entrance an
audience. Wonderfully crafted and arresting images of beauty, courage and
triumph make a lasting impression. Informal discussions about the ideas
presented are as engaging as the works themselves.
Arts Without Borders truly appreciates the financial support we receive from our
sponsors, local businesses and community partners. Our 5-day Arts Festival
would not be possible without their support.
Our volunteers are our best asset and we thank them for their commitment to
making the festival a success. Their willingness to give their time and energy at
the festival is greatly appreicated. We cannot thank them enough!
Celebrate the world of creativity by participating in the many inspiring events
which are a part of this local festival!

LLOYDMINSTER READS!
May 23
7:00 p.m.
Crown Ballroom – Best Western Wayside Inn
Free Admission – Everyone Welcome
Join Todd Babiak for a community wide book discussion! The Crown
Ballroom at the Best Western Wayside Inn will be transformed to create a
comfortable living room setting.
Lloydminster Reads! will be facilitated by Dave Reynolds, Regional
Consultant/SAP Inventory Specialist, Alberta Indigo. Dave is
knowledgeable and enthusiastic to be in Lloydminster and to promote and
celebrate regional authors.
The Garneau Block, as reviewed by Anne McDermid and Associates, has
been touted as “a subtly satirical look at modern life, the story follows a
cast of colourful characters in a small neighbourhood in Edmonton - in oil
rich Alberta. Three weeks after a violent death among them, the residents
of the Garneau Block discover mysterious signs on all of their trees. It is a
call to escape the shadow of the death and they will learn to save their
homes from destruction. The Garneau Block is a warm and hilarious satire,
a mystery and a romance. The residents of the block, a secretly pregnant
travel agent with a master’s degree specializing in the haiku, her politically
opposed parents, the best actor of his generation, a philosopher of death
and his sweet, deluded wife endeavour to transform the Garneau Block, the
city, and their lives.”
“The Garneau Block not only is funny, it’s sophisticated and hokey at
the same time - the very essence of Edmonton, fermented, bottled and
best served with crackers and brie.”
- The Gazette (Montreal)
The Garenau Block is available at Cole’s in the LloydMall, the
Lloydminster Public Library, and at this event.
Todd Babiak is an author, journalist and screenwriter. His first novel, Choke Hold, won the
Henry Kreisel Award for best first book and was
a finalist for the Rogers Writers Trust Fiction
Prize. He is a Praxis Fellow and not long ago,
he was voted Lord Mayor of Old Strathcona. He
is culture columnist for the Edmonton Journal
and is currently writing in the editorial pages of
the Journal. The Garneau Block was long listed
for the Giller Prize and short listed for the
Alberta Literary Award. His third novel, The
Book of Stanley, will be released this year and
has been serialized in the Journal.

Quick Draw Performance
Time: 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm
Lead by international Watercolorist Graham Flatt, local and regional artists will
have one hour to complete and frame a piece of art right before your eyes.
The Quick Draw is a special opportunity for artists to be leaders in establishing
an awareness of the creative process involved in making art. It provides a
wonderful occasion for the public to gain insight into the area’s artists and the
work that they produce. All too often the viewing public’s exposure to art is only
through a gallery or static event. Rarely do they have an opportunity to engage
the artists while they are creating. The Quick Draw Event allows the public to
get a much more personal understanding of the creative process.
Quick Draw Artists:
• Graham Flatt – Watercolour
• Joan Herbert – Pastel
• Linda Nykolaychuk – Oil
• Jeff Burgess – Gouache
• Bonny Mcnab – Watercolour
• Lee Hillaby – Ink

immediately via silent auction. The Quick Draw Silent Auction
opens as the artists begin working and continues through the
viewing and wine reception with all bids closing at 9:00 p.m.
All proceeds from the auction go to the Arts Without Borders
Arts Bursary.

Graham Flatt, Juror
Graham Flatt is a western artist whose watercolors reflect his
passion for painting. Primarily self-taught in the areas of design and
composition, Flatt has attended a variety of watercolor workshops
over the years. His dedication to watercolor painting has allowed
him to experience many influences, which has ultimately resulted in
his signature style of painting. Flatt is a very bold, direct painter with
an emphasis on strong design elements. Working with a limited
palette, Flatt maintains a delicate balance between passion and
design. Graham was awarded the Ralph “Tuffy” Berg Award for the
Best New Artist at the 2000 C. M. Russell Auction of Original
Western Art in Great Falls, Montana. Flatt is the only international
winner of this award in its 38 year history. His design for a 3/4 life
size buffalo was chosen as one of only 24 for a C. M. Russell
museum fundraising effort. Flatt has gone on to win numerous other
awards including “Best of Show” and “People’s Choice” in both
Canada and the U.S. He is a signature member of the Society of
Western Canadian Artists and a frequent guest lecturer and juror.
Flatt has quickly emerged as one of Canada’s top western
watercolorist with numerous sold out shows throughout Canada and
in the United States.

Verona, Italy, and has taught art at the Calgary Allied Arts Centre,

experience of the pieces is one of communication, of sharing.
Ohe has exhibited solo at the Glenbow Museum, ACAD, and the
Nickle Museum, and has contributed to countless group
exhibitions locally, nationally, and internationally. Her art is
displayed in numerous public spaces throughout Calgary, and is
held in many important corporate, private, and institutional

Feature Length Films:
Bye Bye Blues / directed by Anne Wheeler. 1989 (117 min.) Rated PG
Story about a WWII wife and mother who joins a local dance band to provide for her family while her husband
is away at war. Romantic involvement with one of the band members make her decisions difficult when her
husband returns from war. The story watches the progression of the band as it grows into a popular, successful
recording and touring group. Excellent music and soundtrack.
Samurai Cowboy / directed by Michael Keusch. 1993 (96 min.) Rated PG
When his best friend dies of a heart attack due to permanent stress at work, the Japanese businessman Yutaka
Soto quits and fulfills himself a dream: he buys a ranch in Montana to live on. However the ranch turns out to be
due for demolition and the welcome by the people is less than friendly. Hotel owner Cord Wingate wanted to
ranch himself and now sabotages Yutaka. Only veterinarian Jessy and an old Cowboy help him.
20
Waydowntown / directed by Gary Burns. 2000 (87 min.) Rated 14A
Four young office workers have a bet going to see who can last the longest without going outside. In the maze
that is the downtown core of a large city, glass skywalks connect apartment buildings, office towers and
shopping malls. It is day 28 of the bet and over the lunch hour, as the office prepares for the company
founder’s retirement party, things start to seriously unravel.
Bordertown Cafe / directed by Norma Bailey. 1993 (101 min.)
The sometimes comic ups and downs of parental and romantic love among members of a three generation family
is explored against the backdrop of a small bordertown cafe (on the Canadian/U.S. border) owned by the family.
Short Films:
Circle of the Sun / National Film Board of Canada, 1960 (30 min.)
At the 1961 gathering of the Blood Indians of Alberta, the exciting spectacle of the Sun Dance was
captured on film for the first time. The film examines Blood Indian culture and spirituality, showing how
the theme of the circle reflects their connection to wildlife, and addresses the predicament of the
young generation – those who have relinquished their ties with their own culture but have not yet found
a firm place in a changing world.
Teach Me to Dance / National Film Board of Canada, 1978 (29 min.)
Lesia convinces her English-Canadian friend Sarah to perform a Ukrainian dance with her as part
of their school’s Christmas pageant. However, Sarah’s father objects. Angry at the growing number
of Ukrainian settlers, he will not allow his daughter to do the Ukrainian dance with Lesia. But in
spite of the prejudices of their parents, the girls’ friendship remains strong, and they meet in Sarah’s
barn to celebrate Christmas Day together.
Death of a Skyline / National Film Board of Canada, 2003 (42 min.)
With archival film clips, interviews and dramatic footage of tumbling grain elevators, Death of a Skyline explores the
history and significance of these familiar prairie structures. Wooden grain elevators have been at the heart of North
America’s economic, cultural and physical landscape for more than a century. As they continue to fall, will all that remains
be memories of a vanishing way of life?
Singing our Stories / National Film Board of Canada, 1998 (49 min.)
Profiles some of the First Ladies of North American indigenous music. The Monk-Sanders Singers, four
generations of Tuscarora women, give a joyous impromptu concert on the porch of an old North Carolina
plantation house. Blackfoot composer Olivia Tailfeathers teaches traditional song to teenagers from
Alberta’s Blood Nation. The Zuni Olla Maidens perform their ancient pottery dance against the spectacular
backdrop of New Mexico’s Dowa Yallane Mountain. The film celebrates a rich musical heritage in a
journey that takes viewers from the Smokey Mountains of North Carolina to Vancouver Island, from the
plains of Alberta to the mesas of New Mexico.
Redskins, Tricksters, and Puppy Stew / National Film Board of Canada, 2000 (55 min.)
Take an in-depth laugh-a-minute tour of complex issues like Native identity, politics and racism, wrap
them neatly inside one-liners, guffaws and comedic performances, and you have Redskins, Tricksters
and Puppy Stew. This film hilariously overturns the conventional notion of the stoic Indian and shines
a light on an overlooked element of Native culture – humour and its healing powers.
