SJW Picnic / Meeting
Fri - July 4, 2014
By Walt Pettigrew
th
Come celebrate the 4 of July with SJW
at Eagle Manor with our hosts Walt and
Laurie Pettigrew. This mostly picnic
with a little bit of meeting will also have
a bike ride plus some other fun things.
The ride begins at 3:00, the picnic/meeting at 5:00. Please
contact Walt at 856-392-6784 for questions or to check on
a food item to bring.
The ride will be a C pace or slower, about 10-15 miles,
starting and ending at Eagle Manor. The route has almost
no traffic on small back roads. The route will vary
according to the wind, bugs, etc.
It might be a good idea to bring bug repellent, for both
the ride and picnic. The bugs haven't been bad this past
week, but it's best to be prepared. Some suggestions for
food to bring: baked beans, pies,
greens salad, potato salad and
soda. Please call the food hotline about food! We will
provide some sort of meat
disguised as chili and barbecue.
You are highly encouraged
to bring you favorite micro
brewed (craft) beer. We plan to exchange beers so that
you come with one type beer but go home with several
bottles of other craft beers. Fishing, kayaking, hiking etc
are possible, but not during the meeting. Go ahead check
the by-laws on that, you can trust me! Extreme fine print:
no fishing during meetings – our bylaws are that old.
Directions to Eagle Manor:
GPS: 806 Back Neck Rd, Fairton (or Bridgton), NJ.
Non GPS: Find Fairton on a map - southeast of Bridgton.
From Bridgeton: south on Rt. 553, right on Rt 601 (Back
Neck Rd). From Millville: left on Rt 601 (just past Barton
Bait Shop). At 3 miles stay to right of fork. Eagle Manor
entrance about 2 miles more. Turn right into driveway,
follow road back to houses and river.

Safe passing "four foot" bill passed
by Assembly
The NJ Assembly voted on Monday, June 16 to
approve the safe
passing, or "four
foot" bill
(A1600A1577)
for the state, in a
49-21 vote. This
is the first time
the state has
been able to get
a safe passing
bill this far in the state legislature.
Many of you contacted your assembly
representatives and asked for their support.
Congratulations and thank you!
As we reported last month, this law is urgently
needed in the state to protect "vulnerable road
users"- bicyclists and pedestrians - on our roadways.
New Jersey is the only state in the northeast that
does not have a safe passing law. This is the first
step in making our roads safer for all users.
NJBWC is working to get similar bills posted by the
Senate Transportation Committee. As this effort
moves through the NJ legislature, NJBWC will need
to identify know how many readers we have in each
of the state's legislative districts. Help us keep the
momentum going by giving us your zip code so
that we may identify your district. Rest assured that
we do not share information about our readers and
members on an individual basis; your information will
remain confidential.
Soon, with your

Bicycle Map and Resource Guide
http://www.nj.gov/transportation/commuter/bike/guide.shtm
The New Jersey Bicycle Map and Resource Guide is
a comprehensive tool for those traveling by bicycle
for recreation or transportation in New Jersey. This
online publication provides bicyclists with information
to help make biking a convenient and enjoyable
travel option. The map includes state bicycling tour
guides, elevation, on-road bicycle facilities and a
measure of bicycle suitability as well as cultural,
historic, recreational and other points of interest.
The guide divides New Jersey into two regions:
•a northern map (pdf 9.7m) and a Resource Guide
(pdf 7.3m) featuring links to
online biking information,
how to use the map, and a
highlight of the Newark
area
•a southern map (pdf
13.5m), and a Resource
Guide (pdf 3.1m) featuring
links to online biking
information, how to use the map, and a highlight of
the Camden area
Also available:
•an atlas(pdf 59.8m) including inset maps of the
Newark and Camden areas
This New Jersey Bicycle Map and Resource Guide
reinforces the New Jersey Department of
Transportation's support for bicycling and the
Complete Streets philosophy, and its goal to make
New Jersey a sustainable, livable, walkable and
bikeable community.
Fleche Revisited - By Rick Lentz
A sign of spring for a Randonneur is a 24 hour
Fleche event. But I digress to a few terminology
excerpts from Randonneurs USA (www.rusa.org).
Randonneur- There is no direct English translation
of the French term "randonnée", which loosely
means to go on a long trip, tour, outing, or ramble,
usually on foot or on a bicycle, along a defined
route. A person who goes on a "randonnée" is called
a "randonneur
Fleches USA- A 24-hour event held on or around
Easter weekend.... No rest stop may be longer than
2 hours... A minimum of 360 km must be covered
during the event.... It is for teams of 3 to 5 members
and each team designs their own route that heads to
a common destination set by the event organizer....
Teams must ride the specified minimum distance in
the appropriate time period and finish together to get
ride credit.
After completing this event five continuous years
with various fourth and fifth members, the core
group of Dawn Engstrom, Captain Walt Pettigrew
and Rick Lentz took a break from this event in
2013. On April 26th, the three of us were joined by a
returning member, Bill Reagan, to have at it once
again. Our destination would again be the Youth
Hostel on Lake Nockamixon in Quakertown
Pennsylvania, more than 225 miles from our
morning start at the Belle Plain Group Cabin in
Eldora New Jersey.
Seeing us off was a contingent of South Jersey
Wheelmen cycling club members who conveniently
were renting the cabin where we had our start. After
a few photos and a cheerful send-off, we headed
east into a stiff wind to Salem for our first controle. A
controle is a checkpoint of sorts where Randonneurs
must obtain some proof of passage to show they’ve
traversed the designed route. This generally is
achieved via a receipt from a purchase and a
signature from a store clerk. But it can also be the
mailing of a post card from a post office in a town.
These controles must be placed in such a way as to
eliminate the possibility of a rider short cutting the
route. There would be 10 such controles on our
route, including the start controle.
After leaving Salem, we headed primarily north,
working our way through controles in Swedesboro,
Winslow, Chatsworth, Hamilton, Lambertville and
Alpha before heading over to Easton and
Quakertown in Pennsylvania. Other than a passing
shower, we had very reasonable weather. The rain
even brought out a wonderful rainbow to lift our
spirits.
After
riding
through
the night
and into
the
morning
hours,
we
arrived
exactly
24 hours
later, greeted by the smiling and ever welcoming
face of Tom Rosenbauer, the event organizer.
Riders from other teams, a nice food spread and
warm showers greeted us as well. Another one in
the books. Literally, another day in the life of a
Randonneur.
An element that we feel is essential to a successful
Fleche team and fulfilling experience is a close
chemistry between the members of the team. We
have been fortunate to have this on all teams we’ve
entered into this event. Another key ingredient is a
good team captain. We’ve had that all six years in
Walt Pettigrew. It also helps having the support of
family and friends who do anything from dropping us
off at starts, picking us up at finishes and cheering
us on throughout. Thank you all.
Putting this into words has me yearning for spring
2015.

June Ride Review & Upcoming Rides
by Rob Walsh
The 1st of the series of Walt Pettigrew's Breakfast
Brunch or Lunch Ride in June was canceled due to
rain. The sequel 2nd of the series is scheduled
for July 15. The Thursday's nights SJW Mojo rides
hosted by Mary Miranda and Gary Pilling are
gathering attendance momentum and are scheduled
for July and August. The SJW Time Trial Series
started up in June and will continue in July and
August. The Dodge Market of Elmer Ride had Bud
Gressman of Vineland and myself riding the 30
miles and having brunch after the ride.
Rick Lentz has two Saturday "Rise and Shine
Breakfast Rides" rides out of Larry's II in Vineland
coming up in July. We hope to see SJW
representation at the Millville's race track Motor(less)
Nights and the Delaware Double Cross. A thank you
to the folks that have come forward with rides and
events and for the people that have supported the
rides by attending.
Submitting Future Rides
by Rob Walsh
SJW is attempting to place a stronger priority on preplanning and providing more road rides for
membership. Providing rides is not the sole
responsibility of the officers and requires members
that are experienced safe riders to come forward to
develop and lead rides.
Please make every attempt to submit rides to both
Ride Coordinators by the 15th of
the month prior to the newsletter
release. If you are too late for the
newsletter deadline please email
the Ride Coordinators anyway.
SJW has the option of using
SJW email, web site and Facebook site to possibly
make your ride a Club ride.
Pre-planned or extemporaneous, various mediums
can be used to communicate to the club. The key
word becomes "Club ride" when it comes to
insurance. Please submit all rides through the Ride
Coordinators to make it a "Club ride" and the earlier
the better.
RIP…William (Bill) Sample:1 With great sadness I pass along
the June 4th death of Bill Sample, LHD Founder/President
Emeritus of the Sunshine Foundation. The Sunshine
Foundation became the first wish granting organization and
until this day, the only national wish granting organization to
make dreams come true for more than 37,000 children who
have not just life-threatening illnesses but also children with
life long severe chronic diagnoses as well as trauma from
abuse, whose parents cannot afford to give their child a dream
come true. Bill Sample always believed that every child should
have at least one dream come true and he dedicated the last
37 years of his life to that
worthwhile cause.
Upon realization that
so many children wanted to
visit the Central Florida
theme parks, Bill found
property and moved to
Florida in 1989 to oversee
construction of Sunshine
Foundation’s Dream Village.
As with granting a child’s
wish, Sunshine Foundation’s Dream Village was a vision Bill
had to give the children who dreamed of fairytales, a magical
village where they could spend their visit as if living in the
forest and their own cottage with a magical theme. Bill also
had the vision to see a Sunshine Foundation Dreamlift, a jet
full of children with special needs and their care takers, took
place in the early 1980’s that would be the first of over 93
Dreamlifts that has flown thousands of children down to a
Central Florida theme park for the day.
Rides Re-Ridden – Get Ready:2 On a beautiful sunny day on
June 1, nearly 100 riders enjoyed the 2014 edition of this great
event held at Fort Mott in Pennsville. The club once again
featured a wide selection of grub including George’s World
Famous Hot Dogs. Many photos were taken and are available
on the club’s Facebook site or at the site shown in the
Footnote below. Besides the historical backdrop of the fort, a
special feature of this location is the ferry that takes you for a
“Sail into History” with stops at Fort Delaware and Delaware
City. Fort Delaware dates back to 1859 and once housed
thousands of Confederate prisoners of war (and whose ghosts
reportedly still haunt the site). Else you can continue onto
Delaware City featuring more than 200 structures spanning
the 19th and early 20th centuries.
Tour de France:3 You have been waiting for this great event
all year if you are a true bicyclist. This year’s race begins on
July 5 with a road stage from Leeds to Harrogate, England. On
July 8, the riders proceed to France via Eurostar. Final stage is
on July 27th. See Footnote for additional details.
Final Thought…"Things do not happen. Things are made to
happen." - John F. Kennedy
Safe Cycling…Wear Your Helmet!
Bill Sample was always proud of Sunshine
Foundation’s work with the children who have the challenges
of Progeria (Hutchinson Guilford Syndrome). He and the
Sunshine Foundation a began an Annual Progeria Reunion in
1982, which would bring together, for 27 years, all known
children from throughout the world who were diagnosed with
Progeria, simply to spend a week together so they would not
feel alone. Bill’s efforts in support of these special children
brought about awareness of this truly life changing diagnosis.
