The Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center (SNFCC)
aspires to become a high standard, urban, multifunctional
complex for education, arts and entertainment. Designed by the
Renzo Piano Building Workshop (RPBW), the project consists of
the construction and complete outfitting of the new facilities of
the National Library of Greece (NLG) and the Greek National
Opera (GNO), as well as the creation of the 210,000 m2
Stavros Niarchos Park.
The SNFCCÕs development is entirely funded by the Stavros
Niarchos Foundation in an exclusive grant of 617 million euros.
The project will be handed over to the Greek State which will
assume its full operation and management.
The SNF wishes to keep the SNFCC in constant dialogue with
the public until its official delivery to the State, making the
SNFCC fully accessible to the public and giving visitors the
opportunity to re-discover and enjoy the project. Therefore
starting in August and until the delivery to the Greek State, the
SNFCC intensifies its programming, offering a program of free
events which will include among others athletic events, activities
for children and families, movie screenings, musical concerts and
many more. Visitors will also be able to participate in guided
tours of the NLG and GNO facilities.
All events are funded exclusively by the
Stavros Niarchos Foundation.

On April 18, 2012 the Stavros Niarchos Foundation announced
that it acquired BrŽalÕs Silver Cup, the first Marathon WinnerÕs
Cup presented to Spyros Louis at the inaugural Modern Olympic
Games in Athens in 1896, in an auction held at ChristieÕs, where
it was being offered for sale for the first time by the runnerÕs
grandson. The FoundationÕs decision to participate in the auction
was motivated by the CupÕs historical significance both as an
Olympic and a national artifact. The Foundation announced
immediately its commitment to make the Cup available to the
public and to share it with everyone by displaying it permanently
at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center, upon its
completion. In the interim, more than 3,500,000 visitors have
had the opportunity of viewing the Cup during its exhibit at the
Acropolis Museum in Athens (September 2012 - August 2014
and April 2015 - January 2016). The Cup was also hosted
for 6 months at the Olympic Museum in Lausanne (September
2014 - March 2015), during a period that coincided with
the International Marathon of Lausanne, which attracted
approximately 3,000 runners from around the world, enabling
both athletes and visitors to see this historic Olympic artifact from
up close.

A contemporary and amusing revival of games that still excite
children in squares or school yards and which we are all
acquainted with or have played when young. Hopscotch, tug
of war, hoops and hop sack racing will be, among others the
starting point for contemporary versions of the games which,
however, will not change those particular features that have
made them last through time, becoming an integral part of our
folk culture. And it is not only the children who will have fun
playing. Grown ups will recall memories from their childhood
and might even be tempted to play too, turning this activity into a
meeting across generations and an occasion for some essential
mentoring of the young.

opportunity to participate in a variety of psychomotor games,
structured around the skills of their particular age group. The aim
of the program is the recreational and creative involvement of
children in a specially configured environment, promoting the
idea of exercise as a daily lifestyle. Physical education teachers,
experienced in mobility, pedagogical and learning issues, guide
children during this activity, which is open to all and equally
aims to embrace children with particular mobility and learning
difficulties.

2016: the year of the Olympic Games in Rio, Brazil! Through
this game, children will learn about 8 Olympic sports, as they
visit the 8 interactive stations located at different spots around
the Stavros Niarchos Park. At each station, children will discover
information about the specific characteristics of each sport, and
will be called to solve a riddle. The degree of difficulty of the
questions comes in accordance with the childrenÕs age group.
Those that provide the right answer, win a piece of the puzzle,
which, in turn, provides clues for the next station. The team that
completes the puzzle first, wins the game. The activity aims to

As a combination of martial arts, exercise, music and dance,
Capoeira is highly recommended during childhood. It
contributes to the development of a childÕs physical qualities
such as strength, speed, balance and reflexes. It enhances the
childrenÕs sense of trust and confidence, while also ameliorating
their social abilities. During the workshop, children aged 6-14
activate their artistic, musical and creative senses, with the aim of

In the midst of the summer, we shall dwell deeper into how
energy is related to the balance between body, mind and
emotions, with gentle practices involving breathing, yoga
positions and relaxation. We will attempt to make a journey
inwards and understand ourselves better. We will find the time to
reflect on who we are, an action that is often neglected through
our daily lives. We will learn our limits, expand our horizons and
relax deeply.
The workshops are addressed to adults without any severe
medical conditions, willing to explore new paths, which lead to
personal freedom and advancement. Participants are advised to
wear comfortable clothes, bring along their own yoga mat, as
well as a wrap-around to cover their bodies during relaxation.

Series of music concerts
at the Stavros Niarchos Park
The SNFCC launches the new series of music concerts Parklife.
A multitude of styles and artists meet at the Park, as it turns itself
into a music locus inviting the public to feel the music and dream
along. Each time a different genre will be represented covering
a wide range of musical influences and backgrounds. The series
will take us on a journey through inspirational melodies, nature
and creativity.
Parklife: The Acoustic Sets
© Elen Aivali
The first Parklife features Pavlos Pavlidis, Vassilikos, Leon of
Athens and Katherine Duska in a magnificent acoustic set, where
they will perform with their voices alone, free of any additional
instrumentation, showcasing the value of simplicity.
20:00
20:00
Pavlos Pavlidis
Vassilikos
Pavlos Pavlidis is a musician, singer and songwriter. From 1984
to 1988 he was member of the band Mora sti Fotia. In 1992,
he formed the band Xylina Spathia, where he acts as singer,
composer and songwriter. After the bandÕs breakup in 2003,
and following his first solo album ÒSince I am forgottenÓ in
2004, he created the B-Movies.
Pavlos Pavlidis will present a set enriched with songs that are
not often performed at his concerts, as their selection now
fits perfectly with the acoustic style of the gig. It will include
cherished melodies and lyrics from his entire discography, up to
his latest album, released in April 2016 ÒA fire in a matchboxÓ
(Μια πυρκαγιά σÔένα σπιρτόκουτο). He will be accompanied at
the piano by Orestis Benekas.
Vassilikos is one of the most talented Greek artists of his
generation. Both as a solo artist, but also as member of his band,
Raining Pleasure, he is successfully standing out since the early
Õ90s. Influenced by the European music scene, Vassilikos has
released 7 albums with Raining Pleasure, of which he was the
composer, singer, bassist/guitarist and lyricist. In his arsenal,
he already has counts some of the biggest hits of the last 20
years in Greece. Apart from his successful career with Raining
Pleasure, Vassilikos has collaborated with several important
musicians, such as the Dutch singer Traincha, Elli Paspala, Lena
Platonos, and Eleftheria Arvanitaki. He will be accompanied at
the piano and synthesizers by Vassilis Triantafyllopoulos.
Katherine Duska
Leon of Athens
Katherine Duska one of the most unique voices of the Greek
Anglophone music scene! Her voice takes us back to the
ÒblackÓ vocals of the past decades. Her lyrics and music
reveal her musical depth by combining Indie-Pop, Neo-Soul
and Soulful Pop, and her stage presence is breathtaking.
In her live performances, she presents stories that speak of
affection, hesitation, our defense mechanism against love, the
internal struggle caused by sociopolitical issues of our times,
new beginnings and long-distance relationships nostalgia, but
also the desire for life and making every minute count, as she
describes images of an ideal, perhaps utopian microcosm.
Katerine will perform some of her best hits, along with favorite
acoustic covers.
Leon of Athens (Timoleon Veremis), has already succeeded in
getting rave reviews from major international media such as the
Guardian, the New York Times and the BBC, while, he recently
completed a tour of several European cities. The colorfulness of
his sound, the visual essence of this lyrics, the authenticity of his
inspiration have established Leon as one of the main names in
music that Greece has been exporting in recent years. Shortly
before completing his highly anticipated new album, produced
by David Kosten (Bat for Lashes), Leon gives us an opportunity to
get a taste of his new songs and also enjoy some of his old ones,
along with favorite covers.

Park Your
Cinema
Series of movie screenings
under the moonlight
This summer, the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center
inaugurates a bond with the Athenian cinéfil culture, for a
series of weekly screenings of classical films. At the first Park
Your Cinema, the cinematic choices are based on vintage
works, which have helped establish an entertainment tradition
of reissues of classical films at Athenian outdoor movie
theaters. From the Ô30s to the early Õ70s, the films, screened
in a chronological order, apply to the mythology of global
filmography; movies which have been loved over and over
again, screened under the Athenian sky. The potential ÒlocationÓ
of these screenings is flexible, since the SNFCC offers various
alternatives for ÒparkingÓ an outdoor movie theater!

Anna Kalman is a popular actress living in London. Lucky in
terms of her career, but unlucky in her romantic life, she has
almost given up on love when she meets a handsome economist
and falls in love with him. Philip Adams, however, lies to her in a
most unusual manner: as opposed to a married man pretending
to be single, he pretends to be married even though he is
actually a bachelor!
A classy romantic comedy, full of misunderstandings, reuniting
the legendary (from Alfred HitchcockÕs ÒNotoriousÓ) couple
of Cary Grant and Ingrid Bergman on the big screen. It was
nominated for 3 Golden Globes and was one of the first films to
popularize the use of the technique of split screens in cinema.

Who else, but Barbarella, the queen of the galaxy! One of
the definitive cult films in the history of science fiction cinema,
based on Jean-Claude ForestÕs French Barbarella comics. The
film has had a huge impact in pop culture (think of name of the
band ÒDuran DuranÓ, Jean-Paul GaultierÕs designs in ÒThe Fifth
ElementÓ, the music video for Kylie MinogueÕs ÒPut Yourself in
My PlaceÓ and PrinceÕs references in ÒEndorphin MachineÓ).
Both Sophia Loren and Brigitte Bardot turned down the starring

A woman is pursued by her dead husbandÕs associates, who
want to retrieve the loot from a heist they pulled together, a
loot which the deceased never intended to share. One of
these associates is, perhaps, the husbandÕs killer. An excellent
combination of the suspense thriller, romance and comedy
genres, the movie is a perfect example of quality entertainment

the city of Paris playing a leading role in a plot, which truly
captivates the audience. For the movieÕs theme song, Henry

A lawyerÕs family is at the mercy of an ex-convict, who spent
eight years in prison for rape because of him. Now, Max Cady
(Robert Mitchum) will play a game of cat and mouse with the
family, with a violent ending. A psychological thriller -with an
almost b-movie quality- that gained a huge cult following with the
passage of time and was ÒrediscoveredÓ when the movie was
remade by Martin Scorsese in 1991. Naturally, Gregory Peck
plays the honest and law-abiding American family man, while
Robert Mitchum convincingly plays the role of the villain.
CharlieÕs favorite uncle returns to his hometown after a long time,
but his private life remains a great mystery that may be related
to the unknown identity of a man who marries rich widows,
only to murder them and escape with their fortunes. One of the
directorÕs most intense psychological thrillers, with macabre noir
undertones and a sardonic sense of humor, the movie comments
on the relationship between niece and uncle in a somewhat
erotic manner. Furthermore, the movie has a reputation of being
among the directorÕs personal favorites! It was nominated for an
Academy Award for Best Story.

A fire set by a saboteur at an aircraft factory results to the

country. A spy thriller with elements of a war film -and one of
the first movies Alfred Hitchcock shot at Hollywood- ÒSaboteurÓ
may not feature an all-star cast, but it is one of the most masterful
examples of the directorÔs filmography. It features incredible
anthology scenes, such as the legendary, climactic scene of the
symbolic conflict between tyranny and democracy.
