Singing Your Praises! Epiphany School 2015 Annual Report 44661.indd 45 10/12/15 1:47 PM And if you threw a party / Invited everyone you knew You would see, the biggest gift would be from me and the card attached would say, Thank you for being a friend Dear Friends, Epiphany School offers each of us the opportunity to lose ourselves into something real, something important. Here we can make a real difference and have a huge impact in the lives of the marvelous children who join our community. You, the friends listed in this report, have all given of yourselves in some way, shape, or form to both make this place possible and ensure its future—you are all Epiphany stars! In the pages that follow, I invite you to read about a handful of our in-house Epiphany stars. First, there is our chef, the amazing Sue Bielamowicz, whose kitchen is a place where parents, teachers, volunteers, and students come together to produce delicious and nutritious meals in a spirit of love and hospitality. Then there’s a story about the great Janice Pinola, one of our long time and critically important volunteers, whose intelligence and quiet persistence astound us on a daily basis. When it comes to volunteers, I always say that we prefer a ‘cactus over an orchid,’ and Janice is a great example of why that is. Certainly no one would describe her as prickly but, like a cactus, she survives with almost no help and even blossoms. We would all do well to follow her example. Next, you’ll see a piece that takes you through a day in the life of Juju, one of our sixth grade students. In her story, you’ll get a glimpse of the strength and resilience embodied by our children, the majority of whom spend long, twelve hour days with us. It’s these children who inspire everything we do here. You’ll also see a ‘good news’ update about Starting Younger, Growing Stronger, our capital campaign. The success of this campaign will allow us to start younger by establishing a ground breaking Early Learning Center for infants and toddlers (and, of course, their families). At the same time, we will be growing stronger by increasing our endowment which will allow us to double its contribution to the school’s annual operating expenses. We will also strengthen our graduate support program, expand our teacher training, and 2 | Epiphany 2015 44661.indd 2 10/12/15 1:48 PM create an Epiphany Institute to share best practices and support the many “Epiphany-inspired” schools that have been created all across America. Over the past seventeen years, men and women with vision and courage have rolled up their sleeves and given themselves over to this work, and our Starting Younger, Growing Stronger efforts extend that work in ways that will meaningfully change the trajectory of our common life. We need all hands on deck. We need you. Your loyal generosity, your commitment, and your love for others makes this place what it is, and I cannot thank you enough. Your GRATEFUL Fan, The Rev. John H. Finley IV Epiphany 2015 | 3 44661.indd 3 10/12/15 1:48 PM Come on-a my house, my house-a come on. Come on-a my house, my house, I’m-a gonna give you figs and dates and grapes and a cake, ah! We eat really well here at Epiphany, and we have Chef Sue to thank. Just before meal times, aromas of a happy kitchen broadcast that good things are happening, tastebuds involuntarily prepare to be delighted, and tummies start to rumble. Leading a diverse team of volunteers, parents, teachers, and students, Chef Sue serves over 35,000 delicious meals a year with varied, nutritious and popular menus. Sue buys locally whenever possible, teaches the students to cook, composts all organic material, and is responsible for Epiphany’s raised bed gardens. Sue says, “Introducing and encouraging kids to eat new, healthy foods is not a problem—it’s getting them to eat and like it that’s the challenge. That’s why my goal is to prepare meals that appear incredibly ordinary and familiar, yet taste incredibly delicious—that way they can’t help themselves. My approach to cooking and crafting a successful recipe is really quite simple. If I wouldn’t want to eat it, I’ll never serve it. In my kitchen, food will always be real and always be good. Processed foods are a no-no in my kitchen—where possible, I use only fresh ingredients, eliminating the majority of canned, bottled, and frozen foods as well as partially prepared and precut foods. Sauces and marinades are made from scratch. Chicken tenders start out as whole chickens. Snacks include fruit in the morning and some combination of yogurt, granola, cheese, and goldfish in the afternoon. You get the idea. I’m in love with the work I do at Epiphany. Every day, I have the opportunity to make changes to our food culture. Students who come 4 | Epiphany 2015 44661.indd 4 10/12/15 1:48 PM to school hungry are presented with healthy choices from breakfast straight through dinner. Students who arrive at Epiphany refusing to eat vegetables now consider my Harvest Chili to reign supreme in their list of food choices, and it’s nothing but vegetables! With nonstop exposure to new and different foods and recipes along with steadfast encouragement, our students are continually trying new things. We are creating a physically and emotionally nourishing environment in the kitchen at Epiphany. I put love and creativity into the food that I cook, and I reap the rewards in the smiling faces of the students and the teachers.” A Weekly Epiphany Menu monday: tuesday: Breakfast / Lunch / Dinner cereal with milk, fruit / turkey empanadas / spaghetti and meatballs, garlic bread, salad scrambled eggs, whole wheat English muffin, fruit / roast turkey sandwiches / tacos with rice, beans, salad fruit, milk / vegetable curry and rice / shepherd’s wednesday: waffles, pie, dinner rolls, salad thursday: friday: egg frittata with toast, fruit / garden pizza / parmesan + herb roasted chicken legs, ratatouille, cornbread, salad yogurt, homemade granola, fruit / cachupa with tuna / harvest chili, cornbread, salad Epiphany 2015 | 5 44661.indd 5 10/12/15 1:48 PM The struggles I’m facing / The chances I’m taking Sometimes might knock me down, but No I’m not breaking We believe deeply in caring for the ‘whole child’, not just his or her intellectual development, but all aspects of healthy development and growth. We provide three meals and two snacks daily to each student, fit students for glasses, offer hearing screenings, arrange for psychologists in private practice to meet with students, help families access support from social service agencies, assist parents looking for work or housing, and much, much more. As a ‘full service’ school, Epiphany combines a rigorous academic program with personal supports and the delivery of critically needed health, prevention, and social services for each student. Children do not develop and learn in isolation, but grow physically, socially, emotionally, ethically, and intellectually within networks of families, schools, neighborhoods, communities and our larger society Through collaborative programming with a large number of established community agencies, the School addresses pressing needs that would otherwise go unmet. 6 | Epiphany 2015 44661.indd 6 10/20/15 6:35 PM 32% 60% Have Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) MA Department of Children & Families (DCF) Are DCF referrals Received individual therapy 44% 80% 100% English as a second language Come from single parent homes Attend the four week summer intensive at Groton School in July Had access to health care Received 3 meals and 2 snacks daily 3.5 3.7 Seen by dentists for cleaning and sealants Full of promise and potential! With Epiphany’s intensive curriculum, these same students advanced, on average, two full grade levels within one academic year. Epiphany 2015 | 7 44661.indd 7 10/20/15 6:35 PM No matter how far / Just call my name I’ll be there in a hurry OnE that you can depend on and never worry Ask anyone at Epiphany and they’ll tell you that Janice Pinola is the consummate volunteer. She goes above and beyond what is expected on a daily basis and has yet to refuse a task of any kind. She proactively takes on responsibilities that many of us would consider to be less than glamorous, but says she loves these tasks. And best of all, our students, faculty, and staff know she genuinely means it. Through a simple and incredibly lucky twist of fate for us, Mrs. Pinola found her way to Epiphany seven years ago. As long time purchasing agent for Thayer Academy at the time, she stepped up to prepare and serve dinner for Epiphany students when a previous commitment was unable to be met, saving the school from a bit of an eleventh-hour firedrill. Janice was instantly hooked by the Epiphany students and the degree of gratitude expressed to her small volunteer group that night. She continued to help out with dinners but after retiring from her ‘real’ job, she upped her commitment to Epiphany in a big way. On any typical day, you might find Mrs. Pinola laundering items to be returned to their owners or added to the recycling pile; ordering student uniforms and tracking inventory; requesting and negotiating prices for goods and services; overseeing workmen, providing direction while monitoring progress and quality; orchestrating parking lot plowing and snow placement; coordinating rekeying of buildings and ‘new key’ distribution; assisting parents with financial aid applications for high school and beyond; vetting cleaning services; and much, much more. She has a keen eye for cost savings opportunities and finds a way to leverage those skills at Epiphany every day, returning significant dollars to the budget. When something is broken or something is needed, our minds are instantly put to ease once it’s been communicated to Janice. And she is all in—nothing is too small, too big, too simple, or too complicated for her to take on. And take it on she does, competently and quietly. Janice says, “While I never wanted to teach, being around the students and the faculty is interesting and quite enjoyable. When planning for retirement, I think it essential to have a plan—Epiphany was part of my plan. Fortunately, it has worked well for me keeping me involved and providing a sense of accomplishment.” 8 | Epiphany 2015 44661.indd 8 10/12/15 1:48 PM Janice’s Daily To-Do List ¨ Order sleeping bags for upcoming faculty & staff retreat in Maine. ¨ Weekly meeting with Director, Buildings & Grounds to review outstanding to-do list and project status. ¨ Track + record student uniform purchases. ¨ Meet with workmen at the Mather residence to assess what’s needed to improve soundproofing between apartments. ¨ Inventory, sort and organize uniform components (shirts, belts, sweatshirts, pants). ¨ Meet workmen at residences at 218 and 232 Centre Street to allow entry for maintenance work. ¨ Order fluorescent replacement lightbulbs. The $25M Starting Younger, Growing Stronger Capital Campaign is well underway! The 22,000 square-foot state of the art facility and the 7,000 square-feet of outdoor learning space (in the city no less!!) will serve 62 children aged birth to five in a full-service center (artist rendering p 11). In addition to offering a high-quality preschool education for the children, myriad support services for these economically disadvantaged families will also be provided, replicating the model we’ve seen work so well in our middle school. In addition, we will be broadening our educational reach into the community at large by providing training and support for in-home daycare providers serving Boston’s neighborhoods, of which there are 100+ in the immediate neighborhood alone. Our Graduate and Family Support team, a cornerstone of our full service program, will grow to ensure that our “young graduates” are placed in high-quality elementary schools and provided with ongoing support as they move through successive years of schooling and beyond, just as we do with our middle school graduates. A larger 10 | Epiphany 2015 44661.indd 10 10/12/15 1:48 PM team and additional space will allow for an increase in time, energy, and infrastructure dedicated to much needed counseling and targeted programming for all students, as well as focused mentoring and practical job training for our high school and college graduates. With the addition of the “younger” population to Epiphany’s fold, our best-in-class ‘Teaching Fellow’ program will naturally broaden its scope to accommodate early education teaching, necessitating a renovation of existing housing and construction of 10,000 square-feet of new space. Through the creation of the Epiphany Institute, we will broaden existing efforts to influence education reform on a national level, train more educators committed to working in economically disadvantaged urban communities, and offer greater assistance to our 20+ “Epiphanyinspired” sister schools throughout the country. Expanding Epiphany’s reach and full-service model to our youngest constituents is clearly core to our Starting Younger, Growing Stronger Campaign. However, increasing Epiphany’s endowment is equally important. The annual support realized as a result of a healthy and growing endowment will afford us the opportunity to continue to offer a high quality tuition-free education to our students along with full service family support. Epiphany 2015 | 11 44661.indd 11 10/12/15 1:48 PM School days, school days, / Dear old golden rule days. / ‘Readin’ and ‘ritin’ and ‘rithmetic, Taught to the tune of a hick’ry stick. Meet Juju and read about a typical day for a sixth grader at Epiphany School. 5:45 – 6:45 My alarm goes off. In fact, my alarm goes off four times before I actually get out of bed. 6:45 – 7:15 My mom drives me to school and we listen to music. 7:15 – 7:50 I arrive at school and head straight to the cafeteria for breakfast. Today, we have yogurt, homemade granola, and fruit. Yum! 7:50 – 7:55 Five minutes to line up quietly (and I mean quietly!) and make our way to homeroom. 7:55 – 8:15 In homeroom, Ms. Bennis checks my homework to make sure it’s complete (which it almost always is). I also get to hang out with my friends until first period. 8:15 – 9:00 Every Friday, we start the day with DEAR (Drop Everything and Read.) This is when all four grades sit in the assembly hall together and read for 45 minutes. Whether or not I enjoy it depends on if I like the book I’m reading—I Know What You Did Last Summer was a really good one! 9:00 – 9:45 In my combined reading and writing class, we are reading Maniac McGee and using its story to learn and practice how to write single paragraph essays using proper paragraph format: topic sentences, supporting details, and concluding sentences. 9:45 – 10:30 Today in science class, we talked about tornadoes —how they form very quickly when different temperatures and humidity meet. The best part was making 12 | Epiphany 2015 44661.indd 12 10/12/15 1:49 PM a vortex in a bottle which helped me to visualize and appreciate the power of a tornado’s motion! 10:30 – 11:15 Ms. Brice teaches us about all types of religions. Today we talked about Christianity and the many different forms it takes. 11:15 – 12:00 We have two lunch periods here—sixth grade eats during first lunch, which is more than ok with me. This week, I am assigned to be a waiter. I scrape dishes, wipe down tables, and sweep the floor. 12:00 – 12:45 45 minutes of math class, my favorite! We break into teams to play math operation games on the computer where you get points if you click on the right answer—it makes it so much more fun. I like that I have to really think about which of the different operations I have to use to solve a specific problem. 12:45 – 1:30 Eucharist takes place in the Assembly Hall. It’s an opportunity for the whole school to come together as one community, celebrate life, think about others who may need our prayers and sing great songs. 1:30 – 2:15 Speaking of singing, music class is all about that. We are already starting to learn the songs for the Christmas Pageant. 2:15 – 3:00 For Reading Enrichment, I read aloud to work on my pronunciation and learn new words. We talk about what I read to make sure I understand it. 3:00 – 3:30 In X block, you can do lots of different things. You can do homework, you can get one-on-one help, or you can meet with a teacher if you have something on your mind. Today, I met with Ms. Bennis to work on a homework assignment I didn’t quite understand. 3:30 – 3:45 Phew! 15 minutes to get myself organized for the rest of the day. 3:45 – 5:15 This is the time set aside for evening study for the 5th and 6th grades. As much as I don’t like doing homework (I mean, does anyone really?), I do like that I can get most of it, if not all, done before getting home. I also like that there is help right here if I get stuck on an assignment. 5:15 – 5:45 Dinnertime for all. Tonight’s is a winner: Shepherd’s Pie! 5:45 – 7:15 Physical Education closes out the day. Mr. Wilson says it’s important that 5th and 6th graders prepare for the competitive sports we’ll be playing in 7th and 8th grades, so we work on building the right body structure for such things. Tonight, we did our regular drills of stretching, calisthenics, and running; followed by the skill builder of dribbling a basketball. With extra time at the end, we played ‘Capture the Flag’; it’s my favorite game! 7:15 – 7:30 My aunt picks me up and drives me home. 7:30 – 8:00 Still a little bit of homework to do... 9:30 Zzzzzz... Epiphany 2015 | 13 44661.indd 13 10/12/15 1:49 PM But I see your true colors / Shining through I see your true colors /And that’s why I love you Many of the students who come to Epiphany are among the most vulnerable in the city with significant academic deficits and social-emotional needs, which could impact their future success, but ALL of them are full of promise and potential. To ensure their success, Epiphany stays with students for the long haul – a commitment that really sets us apart from other schools. Our generous “Last Dollar” Scholarship Fund helps fill in the financial gaps that may prohibit high school matriculation. Epiphany’s abiding support for graduates does not end at high school. From college counseling to help with essay writing and financial aid forms, we engage with our graduates as they embark on the next educational chapter. Finally, our Graduate Support team helps students find employment, internships, training programs, and more. 1997 - 2015 100% Every year, 100% of Epiphany’s graduates continue their educations at appropriate independent, parochial, charter, and city elite exam schools. 273 Epiphany Graduates $125K Last Dollar Scholarship The amount budgeted to help offset gaps for students to attend high school, (e.g. tuition, transportation costs, books, computers.) 90% vs. 52.8% The number of Epiphany students, from Class of 20012010, who have earned their High School diploma (compared to the three high schools closest to Epiphany.) 14 | Epiphany 2015 44661.indd 14 10/12/15 1:49 PM The following is a list of high schools and postsecondary schools/ programs Epiphany graduates from the classes of 2008-2015 are attending. Epiphany’s ambitious goals require sound financial management. The generous people who invest in this school must know that here resources are managed prudently. Our Trustees, therefore, approach our finances in a very conservative manner. Together with our experienced Business Office staff, they consistently ensure that this school can live up to to its commitment “to never give up on a child” without either wasting money or finding ourselves unprepared to meet our responsibilities. For example, Epiphany has a history of maintaining a balanced budget and currently has no debt. In addition, we fully fund our building reserve so that major capital expenses do not catch us by surprise. If the roof goes or the furnace quits, we have the resources on hand to repair them. We also keep a reasonable operating reserve for the lean summer months when donations traditionally slow down and we have even developed a modest endowment. All these financial matters and more are open for review. As with our academic results, Epiphany is transparent with its finances. Our annual audits are shared publicly, and the school is regularly assessed independently through services like Charity Navigator and Guidestar, where we consistently earn high ratings. We know that healthy accountability is good for our school and produces strong results. 16 | Epiphany 2015 44661.indd 16 10/12/15 1:49 PM Sources and Uses of Operating Funds July 1, 2014 - June 30, 2015 Operating Sources of Funds Annual Fund¹ Individuals (76%)$2,568,273 Foundations (13%)$439,310 Churches (1%)$33,793 Corporations (10%)$337,931 Annual Fund Subtotal$3,379,306 Other Income²$122,266 Endowment Draws for Operating Purposes $73,452 3 TOTAL SOURCES $3,575,024 Operating Uses of Funds4 Instruction + Student Activity (78%)$2,633,489 Development (12%)$400,410 General + Administrative (10%)$337,717 Subtotal Operating Expenses $3,371,616 Increase/Decrease in Net Assets TOTAL USES $203,408 $3,575,024 Cash Contributions to Starting Younger, Growing Stronger $6,157,498 13% 1% 10% 12% 76% Annual Fund ¹ Annual Fund excludes gifts for restricted programs (such as SYGS), rental and meal fund income, endowment, and in-kind donations. ² Includes but not limited to facility use, rental and meal reimbursement, donated services, and restricted gifts. ³ Includes total operating revenue including restricted gifts, but not SYGS. We admit children of diverse faiths, races, cultures, and cognitive profiles, believing in the Episcopal tradition that we find God in and through each other’s presence. Epiphany’s small classes, individualized curricula, and extended school days provide rigorous academic, moral, and social instruction. In close partnership with families, we are an innovative learning community that affords structured support to help students thrive. Together we are a school that never gives up on a child. Epiphany challenges students to discover and develop the fullness of their individual gifts. We seek to prepare graduates who will contribute intelligently, morally, and actively to the society they will inherit.
