SCOUTS
It was such a pleasure to be at the Volunteers Party organised by the Community Council to see our
“Akela” Kath Jackson being presented with the Citizen of the Year Award. Having been a Leader for 20
years, it was a fitting tribute to her hard work. James Atkinson was appointed Young Citizen of the Year,
but was unable to be present to receive his award in person. Our heartiest congratulations to both of
them
Just occasionally everything just
comes together smoothly. This was
certainly the case at our Ceilidh
Night. Not to say it was easy, far
from it, there was a lot of work put
in by parents, committee
and Leaders organising and promoting it, setting out the hall and
making the stovies. But it all paid
off handsomely We had the Town
Hall buzzing the entire night. There
were frantic calculations being
made in the afternoon about numbers and quantities and thanks to
Alyth Fish and Chip Bar not only
for pealing the potatoes, but donating another bag of spuds when
they realised we didn’t have enough. We were delighted with the popularity of the event and amazed at
the total of £1013. The proceeds are destined for our Germany Trip in July and will help enormously.
Our thanks to all involved for such a splendid effort.
I am sure you are all familiar with the expression “ Go West Young Man”. In Alyth Scouts we have a habit of turning things around to the
point of “West Goes Young” as Patrick West has been appointed as a Scottish Headquarters Commissioner for Youth Involvement. The role
of SHQ Commissioner (Youth Involvement) is principally focussed around providing adult support to the Regions and Districts across Scotland in promoting Youth Involvement, but will also include being a key part of the Youth Involvement Development Group at Scottish Headquarters to ensure that the overall strategy is achieved and supported. Not to be outdone, his father Norman has been appointed Scotland
Region Assessor - Mountain Biking. This will enable Norman to grant permits for Leaders to take Scouts on mountain biking activities. With
Norman’s vast experience in this field he will be a major contributor in promoting mountain biking throughout Scotland. Well done both of
you – you are keeping up the tradition of keeping Alyth on the Scouting map
If I were to mention the term battlefield, you might fall into the trap of thinking
this might be the scene in the Scout Hut of a Troop meeting. But on this particular occasion it was a visit to Battlefield Live in Dundee a laser tag activity
with the Troop doing battle against their contemporaries. The idea for this visit
came from the Scouts themselves as part of a programme idea activity session run by Cameron McCaig. Some of the ”combatants” had been there before are were quietly confident they could annihilate their mates, but as it
turned out the layout had been completely changed and their advantage
disappeared. After an hour’s activity the resultant journey home was much
quieter than the journey in. A great night for all.

Alyth Golf Club
Alyth Golf Club has appointed Paul Arthur as its new PGA
Head Professional and I would like to take this opportunity
to introduce myself and about upcoming events at the
Golf Club.
Having made the move north from Edinburgh, I started at
Alyth on 1st Feb. I took the opportunity in January to carry
out a full refit of the Proshop with the help from Graham
Blackadder at ‘Izon Projects’ and I definitely feel we really
achieved our goal of creating a feeling of space, light and
bright with a modern feel. The door is always open for
anyone to pay a visit!
The Proshop will be well stocked with all the latest brands
eg. Callaway, Taylormade, Ping, Wilson, Footjoy, Underarmour, Glenmuir, Motocaddy, Powakaddy to name a
few. I will also be offering a full club repair service, custom fitting and of course coaching. Alyth has an absolutely fantastic practice area which allows most people to hit
up to driver and also has a fantastic 6 hole ‘pee wee’
course for those just starting out in the game. This 6 hole
area is great for beginners and juniors to learn and develop their game. Anyone interested in lessons please contact me on 01828 632268 or at www.paularthurpro.co.uk
I write a weekly newsletters which allows me to bring you
all the latest news, gossip and goings on from in and
around the Professional Shop from Competition Results,
Course updates, Special Occasions, Achievements, Success Stories, New Product arrivals & testimonials, performance advice and instructional video tips. If you are interested in receiving this, then please go to
www.paularthurpro.co.uk and subscribe, you will then
automatically receive the newsletter.
Currently I have 3 demo days booked in; these are open
to anyone and give you the opportunity to try the products. These companies will send along their own Club
Technician to aid the process, there will be 30 min appointments available during the demo day, if interested,
contact the Proshop to book.
Sat 30th April – Wilson- 11am-3pm
Thursday 5th May- Lynx-12-4pm

Morsheda Urgently Needs You to Ring a
Few Doorbells …
during Christian Aid Week 15-21 May 2016.
This seems ages away, but as
we know time creeps up on us,
so I am asking you to consider
becoming part of the team that
takes part in the door-to-door
collection for the Big Red Envelope of Christian Aid. Many
hands make like work, and it is
great to know that so many people in Alyth are already part of this
team, but we could do with some more.
Notification of planned community event
on Alyth Community Woodland on
11th June 2016
I am writing to you, to inform you that Alyth Hill Users Group are
planning on holding the annual community cycling event called
‘Making Tracks’ this year on Saturday 11th June.
Who is Mordesha? Well, she is a mother of four young children,
and they live in a house by a river which floods, something people in
Alyth know all about. As a family they have very little; she has no
savings, getting by each day is a struggle. Mordesha says, ‘I feel
very scared of the river. When I look at it I keep thinking “it is coming”.’
The event will be taking place on the community woodland during
the day only, with evening activities taking place in Alyth Scout Hall.
There will be setting up, and dismantling, activity on the days and
evenings before the event and the days following. All vehicle access
to the site will be via the middle hill path and along the top of the
Community Woodland below Kirkland Bank.
For Morsheda’s family living on low-lying islands in the Brahmaputra
River, Bangladesh, floods are a terrifying part of everyday life.
Morsheda can’t even count on having a safe place to call home: the
single-room, corrugated-iron house she shares with her children has
been flooded four times.
Visitors will be parking in the field opposite the middle Den Car Park
and will be encouraged to use the access up from this field to the
site. Locals will choose to use the Trodlem access by foot or bicycle. Signs will be re-erected to encourage sensible shared use of
Trodlem by both pedestrians and cyclists.
Last year in Alyth we raised £2,807:54. If we raise the same
amount this year, that will mean 100 families like Mordesha’s will
get a Christian Aid Home Safety Package. This could flood-proof
Morsheda’s home, raising it eight foot on an earth plinth, so that she
has a safe place to rebuild, keep livestock and grow crops. It could
also buy a goat, seeds and a wormery to help produce compost –
all of which will give her a long-term income and a solid foundation
for a new life.
Activities on offer at the event will focus on cycling participation on
the purpose made tracks and on planned routes over Alyth Hill, as
well as providing a range of family activities for all ages. It is anticipated that a PA system will be used to announce activity locations
and start times etc, and that a small stage area will be erected to
enable some acoustic music entertainment to take place.
I hope you will attend this event and enjoy the facilities and entertainment on your doorstep and I thank you in advance for your patience if for any reason this event causes any inconvenience for
you.
Please consider becoming part of the Big Red Envelope collecting team.

churches:

Fancy winning a £700 new mountain bike, some outdoor clothing or

March Draw
On a more serious note, since the tracks were built in 2014, signs
have periodically gone missing from the bike park or access tracks
to the park. These signs are paid for by local fundraising and erected by volunteers, and are put there to promote responsible and safe
use of the park and access paths, and need to remain in place for
everyone's safety. This vandalism has now been reported to the
police, so if you see any suspicious activity regarding signs please
inform the police.

ALYTH YOUTH PARTNERSHIP
Alyth Youth Partnership
In last month's Voice I talked about my pride in being appointed the new manager of AYP, and I am happy to report that
it's a case of "so far so good". We have made a number of changes to the way we operate, and over the course of my
first few weeks we have tried a few things with varying degrees of success. I am really lucky to have the support of a
great committee, and the staff and volunteers have quickly formed
To continue with the cliches, "Rome wisnae built in a day", but we can see and feel real progress. For example, the Hub has been transformed
by the staff, volunteers and young people so that it has a fresh new look. All it needs now is for more young people in S3 or above to come
along and make it their own - and it's not about just sitting in here and blethering (although there is plenty time for that) - we are planning a
programme of events over the next few months which will hopefully culminate in a trip to Poland and an ongoing exchange programme.
We have started a Homework Club which is every Monday and Friday during term time, 3.15pm to 4.30pm, and is open to everyone in P5 - P7
to come and crack through their homework with support from staff. The kids have given us good feedback and say that it feels great just to get
it done and then go home and relax. If they don't have any homework, there is always something to do here - as long as they do something!
Youth Club 1, for young people in P5 - P7 has been well attended and we have had lots of fun. We have been up the den, and the park, playing games of hunt, messing about with torches and walkie talkies, and generally running around daft. We had a trip to Mills Observatory to do
some stargazing - a clear night which was perfect, but absolutely freezing! We have tried Geocaching which has been a hit, and we are now
leaving our own caches around the area for people from all over the world to come and find. If you'd like to know more about this, just get in
touch.
Youth Club 2, aimed at S1 and S2 has not had so many people coming along, so maybe we need to think of something more exciting for
them! Some of the young people have been making a video, and will join forces with YC1 to go in some trips in the Easter Holidays.
The Girls Group continue to meet every Friday, and amongst other things their focus has been the Fish and Chip Babies project where 'Auntie'
Kath has been teaching them to knit little baby outfits to send to needy families in Malawi. They have really enjoyed this so far, despite being
initially nervous with the knitting needles!
In the Easter holidays we will be heading off for a few trips - young people from the Hub have requested a trip to Ikea to accessorise our building, and we will also stop off to visit the statue of Wojtech the Bear who they have been interested to learn about. For the younger ones, we will
have trips to the cinema, ice skating, Glasgow or maybe the beach if we happen to get a heatwave! All the while, we'll be looking out for geocaches all over the country!
Looking further ahead, we are involved in the Story Box, an amazing idea! This will be a great opportunity for our young people to learn about
digital recording technology, engage with stories from the past and the future, and to contribute to a future Alyth landmark.

ALYTH DEVELOPMENT TRUST
Community Consultation
Alyth Development Trust and Perth & Kinross Council recently held a two day workshop: ‘Bridging the Gaps – Building the Future’. The consultations looked at the regeneration of the town centre and replacement of bridges and over 170 people gave their views and ideas about the future of Alyth. Planning Aid Scotland, who ran the workshops have collated a report which will help The Trust form an action plan. The report can
be found at: http://www.pkc.gov.uk/alythplacecheck, the link is also on the Alyth Development Trust’s Facebook page. You can also request a
copy from us.
Funding
We recently applied to the Sustrans Community Links fund to help with associated costs of the town centre regeneration and replacement of one
bridge. We were delighted to be invited through to the second stage of the application process. Early in March Marian Bruce, Director, Karen
Inkster, Project Manager and Delivery Officer and Diane Cassidy and Douglas Cook, both from Perth and Kinross Council presented our project
to a panel of 11 associates at Sustrans office in Edinburgh. We hope to hear in April if we have been successful in our application.
The Trust needs to continually raise money for running costs. If you have any ideas to help us fundraise we would be delighted to hear from you!
Table Sale
The Trust has run two successful fundraising table sales and are planning a further three sales this year. The sales have raised nearly £1000 for
the Trust, which will help fund the town centre regeneration. We would like to thank all the table sellers who kindly donated raffle prizes and
helped make the sale such a success. The sales will again be held in Alyth Town Hall on the following Sundays: 12 th June, 11th September and
4th December. Tables are still £10 and you are welcome to sell anything from arts, crafts, to food, to brick a brac and anything in between! Tables
are available on a first come, first served basis. If you wish to book a table please email: [email protected]
Membership
The Alyth Development Trust is keen to expand its membership. Membership is free and contact details will not be shared with third parties. You
will receive approximately 8 e-newsletters per year. The Trust works for and with the people of Alyth, with the existing Community Groups in
Alyth, Alyth Community Council and local and national government and to achieve the following objectives:
The advancement of community development including the advancement of rural regeneration
The advancement of citizenship
The advancement of education
The advancement of the arts, heritage, culture or science
The advancement of environmental protection or improvement
The provision of recreational facilities, or the organisation of recreational activities
If you wish to become a member please request a membership form from us. Forms are also available at the Losset Inn and Thrifty One in Alyth.
If you are already a member, but have not provided us with your email address and would like to receive the newsletter, please contact us at the
email address above.
AGM
Alyth Development Trust’s AGM is taking place on 8th June. Full details will be confirmed shortly, but we are hoping to have a talk prior to the
AGM. We are looking for more Directors to help lead and support the Trust throughout the coming months. As a Director you would help contribute to the development of Alyth and ensure the Trust is acting on behalf of the community.
If you need further information or would like to become a Director please contact us at: [email protected] We also have a Facebook page where you can remain up to date and request a membership f

…...
Birds
Later, walking on the path on our way to another hide I met my
informant and asked if the Iceland gull he saw had been a young
bird. He thought this was the case. ...
It was good to see this bird, but I was delighted to see the flocks of
peewits, and oyster catchers. There were plenty of teal about and
some pochards and tufted ducks. A few greylag geese grazed on
the banks or swam about quietly.
On our way back to my car we paused at a place where some bird
feeders had been set up. Two small boys and their father had bicycled to Kinnordy and were looking through their binoculars with
interest. A red squirrel had just appeared and was out of sight on
the other side of a tree trunk. The boys were waiting for it to come
back round and into view. Suddenly it returned to view, leaped
down to the ground and ran away through the undergrowth.
The red squirrels here at Bamff have feasted heavily on the Norway
spruce cones of the Tay Bridge Wood this winter. Nearly every tree
seems to have a small heap of scales and stripped cones. I hope
this year will bring a good season for coning.
It is the middle of March: squadrons of grey geese are heading
north to breed. First I hear the distant cries of flying geese. Then, as
they grow louder, I look up. There they are: great arrow-heads of
them.
Paul Ramsay
A couple of evenings ago I watched a group preparing to drop in to
land at Lintrathen Loch. This morning a flight was powering its way
on its journey to breeding grounds in Iceland: I wonder where they
will roost tonight. As the geese flew by we decided that they were
greylags rather than pink feet. A greater spotted woodpecker
drummed in the distance.
CHANGES TO THE ALYTH VOICE
TEAM
THANK YOU CATRIONA
The Alyth Voice team would like to thank Catriona
Ronald for her time and dedication over the last 3½
years. Unfortunately due to new commitments she
won’t be able to continue with her role on the team. We
would like to wish her all the best for the future and say thank you
again for your support to the Voice.
Fieldfares are on their way north too. I see them in the trees and
hear the 'tchak tchak' of their call. Jays screech from within a wood.
Spring always comes as a thrill. The drab colours of winter will be
with us for some time yet, but the land is waking. I came across a
splendid frog yesterday by the banks of the Burnished Burn. She
looked heavy with spawn. Thinking of the nearby otter spraints I
hoped she would make herself scarce before the otter came back.
NEW VOICE COMPOSITOR
With Catriona leaving the Voice, the team have managed to obtain
the services of Lynne McGowan. Lynne has lived in Alyth for the last
27 years but she’s originally from the west
coast.
She and her husband have 2 daughters
and a grand-daughter. She runs her own
Responsive Websites and Graphic Design
business from Alyth called Peapod Studios. Lynne hopes to continue the good work
of Catriona and hopefully add some new
ideas. You can contact Lynne via the usual
email address at [email protected]
Later, visiting the ponds, I saw a little grebe, teal, a drake goosander, several pairs of mallard and one mute swan. Will the swan’s
mate join us, or is she already sitting on some early eggs?
The silage, laced with barley, that the sheep are being fed is a great
draw to the birds. Flocks of chaffinches and bramblings, their brightly coloured cousins, descend on the fresh silage as it is spewed out
by the feeder. They search out the grains of barley and devour it.
With the little birds come the pigeons, the jackdaws, rooks and carrion crows, all to enjoy the bounty. After them come the raptors:
perhaps a merlin, or a sparrow hawk. A buzzard may drop on a
pigeon, or a peregrine may stoop on one in flight.
NEW VOICE TREASURER
Some days have passed since I wrote the earlier part of this piece:
days of haar, but today the sun is back and I drove over to Kinnordy. Grandson Adam came with me, a little grudgingly, but was
pleased when one of the occupants of a hide told us that he had
seen an Iceland gull. It was easily seen, our informant said. I wondered if I would find it and scanned the waters with their groups of
feeding black-headed and common gulls. There was one larger
bird, about the size of a herring gull. I scanned past it with my telescope, but found no other candidate. I remembered that my mobile
telephone has a guide to the birds of the British Isles and looked in
that. Perhaps the Iceland gull was a juvenile? I looked back through
the crowds of gulls and saw one that suited…..
After the sudden passing of Michael Kay the team needed to find
another new member of the team. Our new compositor recommended her sister-in-law, Mel McFadden. Mel originally from Worcester
moved to Alyth with her husband 13 years ago to raise her children.
She provides services to many local businesses through her own
company, The Flying PA. Mel hopes to continue the good work of
Michael and encourage the growth of the voice. Mel can be contacted using the usual email address at [email protected]

We have sourced a new collector for ink cartridges although not as yet for other items.
Please continue to bring your ink cartridges

7.30 The Lady in the Van 12A
A big screen adaptation of writer Alan Bennett’s iconic and celebrated memoir, directed Nicholas Hytner.
The film tells the true story of the relationship between Alan Bennett
and the singular Miss Shepherd, a woman of uncertain origins who
‘temporarily’ parked her van in Bennett’s London driveway and proceeded to live there for 15 years. Their unique story is funny, poignant and life-affirming.

Macnabs is delighted to announce the expansion of its Blairgowrie Office,
Courts and Private Client Departments.
Well respected local court practitioner Jamie Baxter formerly of
A & R Robertson & Black has joined the Macnabs Court Team. Based in
the Allan Street, Blairgowrie Office - many of you will already know Jamie,
who was brought up in Blairgowrie, from his local Blairgowrie connections.
Jamie practises in all areas of court work such as matrimonial, contact and
civil disputes with a focus on criminal matters such as road traffic matters.
This latest addition to the Macnabs Court Team means that Macnabs with 7
Court Solicitors has the largest team of litigation specialists in Perthshire.
Our solicitors are experienced in all areas of court work and can serve our
clients throughout Perthshire.
Jamie will be assisted in the Blairgowrie office by Hazel. Hazel McIntyre is
also a local Blair girl. She will be working in the main Blairgowrie front office
and is available to help you with any property related matters.
FAMILY OWNED - “WE REALLY CARE”

Thrifty One

What a relief to have some sunshine streaming in through the windows this last month. We have even dared
to leave the shop door open on some sunny days, though it could be argued that outside can sometimes be
warmer than inside the shop! Spring is definitely upon us at long last. We have a good selection of seasonal
clothing on our rails, some still with their labels on & never worn
At the beginning of March, Paul Ramsay (on behalf of Alyth Voice,) came into Thrifty One to receive a donation of £250 from money raised through the shop. We also donated prizes to the bingo tea recently held to
raise funds for a bench in memory of Michael Kay. These came from new items donated to Thrifty One. In
addition we were happy to display & sell tickets for the raffle to raise money for Cancer Research in memory
of Ann McFadden. A portion of the shop takings was also donated to the same cause on the day of their big
fund raiser at the Bowling Club.
Knowing how the Scouts and cubs can get wet & muddy on their wide games we have provided them with a
selection of good quality fleeces to keep handy for emergencies. Again these have come from donated stock.
We are currently selling raffle tickets on behalf of AHUG – Making Tracks who are raising funds
for the local bike park. First prize is a brand new Lapierre Raid 527 Mountain Bike from Alyth
Cycles, plus many more including two bottles of Malt whisky!
As the above shows there are differing ways in which Thrifty One can give to local groups &
organisations. But we do need to know who you are, so please do get in touch with ideas and
suggestions.
As part of our upcycling remit we are pleased to welcome Shirley McGregor from ‘Pop Up Art
Room Blairgowrie.’ From Tuesday 12 – Friday 15 April she will be running a decorated goblet
and recycled textile craft workshop from for 8 – 12 yr olds. Details are in the accompanying photo. It will be exciting to see how everyday objects can be transformed.
Its been great to see new faces becoming regulars in the shop. Many more of you have found us
on Facebook too. Many thanks to you all.
For those of you who use social media , you can find us as Thrifty One. Please like & share us
with your friends. The more folk who know about us, the more funds we can raise. Thanks!
CANCER RESEARCH FUNDRAISER IN MEMORY OF ANN McFADDEN
Ann’s family would like to say a huge THANK YOU to
everyone who donated items, Paintings, Sketches,
Cards, Crafts, Knitting, Flower Arrangements, chocolates, candles, booze and jewellery, who baked,
helped out, provided the venue, came and drank tea
or coffee and ate cakes and gave us so much money... and an even bigger thank you to those of you
who travelled many miles to share this day with us.
Support was received with great thanks from local
Tayside companies and Artists:
Frances Law, Graham Wands &
Cameron Murray.
Alyth Bowling & Tennis Club, Costcutters, Thrifty One, Graham Davidson Joiners, Skea Organics, Shaggy2Chic Dog Grooming, Local Jeweller
(Liz), Rachel Glen Designs, Piccolo’s Restaurant, Frankies Fish Shack, Jaconelli 57, Eco Chic hairdressing, Tropic Skincare, Grewars Farm
Shop, Premier Alyth.
We are all truly overwhelmed by your support and immense kindness. You helped make this a magical memorial and testament to my amazing
mum. We have raised an unbelievable amount of money which is still growing, £2200+
We salute you all.

Memories of Michael
A young Michael Kay and myself planting a tree at the burnside
( near Chas. Palmer's Garage ) I like to think it is the existing willow.
Several of the pupils, I think prize winners, were given the honour in
Coronation year. As you see Michael started early doing his bit for
Alyth ! From Fiona Stewart nee Walker.
Isla Parishes
Our quiz suppers are now a regular and well attended event in our
community. Our most recent one was held in Kilry Hall on Friday
18th March in a packed hall, where there was some serious competition to see who would be crowned the winning team. A special
thank you goes to our willing band of volunteers who provided a
lovely supper and to everyone else who helped make the evening
such a great success. A special thank you to Evelyn Hood, who
made up the quiz and to Ian Murray, our Quiz Master. The winners
were Alison and Ian MacKintosh and Ken and Yvonne Allen.
Our annual Plant Sale is planned for Saturday 7th May in Airlie Hall
between 10am and 12 noon. With spring around the corner, it’s an
ideal opportunity to buy locally grown plants and shrubs. We will
also have the usual stalls, including cake and candy, crafts, local
produce as well as a chance for a blether with a cuppie and some
delicious home baking!
Musical Notes
Families at war!
Mrs Blitztein, played by Glenda Kean and Mr Locke, played by Ron
Kirkpatrick certainly cannot see eye to eye.
Tickets for BLITZ! by Lionel Bart can be obtained from the Café in
the Square from Monday 4th April.
Mornings 10am till 12noon and Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and
Friday afternoons from 2pm till 4pm.
A sad farewell
After 3 ½ years as the compositor of the Alyth Voice,
this is my last one. I have enjoyed working with the
Voice and its great team however; my commitments
have led me to stand down in favour of some new blood. I know
Lynne McGowan is going to do a great job and I hope you all support her as you have supported me. Daniel Channon will continue
as a compositor with Lynne.
BLITZ! opens on Tuesday 19th April at 7.30 in Alyth Town Hall and
runs until Saturday 23rd April. It is a great family show filled with
swinging music, dancing and interesting characters; a lovely way to
spend an evening.
The Alyth Hotel can provide pre theatre High Teas for £8.99.
Please book in advance.
I’m not going anywhere, so will still see you all around Alyth . . . .
All the best, Catriona
